September 29, 2009 by

Use of alternative medicine on the rise, survey says According to new research, people across America are turning to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) more often in an effort to cure and prevent illness as well as preserve their well-being.

CAM involves such practices as acupuncture, biofeedback and neurofeedback, herbal and nutritional supplements, meditation as well as other therapies that are not considered to be part of conventional medicine.

The National Health Interview Survey found that expenditures on CAM accounted for 11.2 percent of total out-of-pocket healthcare spending in 2007. That year, Americans spent nearly $34 billion dollars on natural health resources, while conventional medicine expenditures amounted to $286.6 billion.

The poll furthermore found that each year around 38 percent of adults use some form of CAM at the cost of $12 billion. This represents an increase compared to the last time the survey was conducted in 2002.

According to the study, the most popular therapies included biofeedback, deep breathing exercises, meditation and yoga, while tai chi, progressive muscle relaxation and energy healing therapies were found to be less common.
