Supreme Court Announces Five New Cases

WASHINGTON (UPI) — The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday it has agreed to hear five new cases in its upcoming term.

The Court will hear Holt vs. Hobbs, a religious challenge to the Arkansas’ penal system’s ban on the wearing of beards by inmates. It was brought by inmate Gregory Holt, who also uses a Muslim name.

It will also hear Integrity Staffing vs. Busk, a claim for overtime pay by workers for after-hours anti-theft screening; Omnicare, Inc. vs. Laborers District Council, regarding an investor’s claim a registration statement filed with the Securities and exchange Commission was untrue; Warger vs. Shauers, involving alleged dishonesty by a juror prior to a Federal trial; and North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners vs. Federal Trade Commission, which seeks a definition of a State agency’s right to share in government’s immunity in anti-trust claims.

Among the cases the Court chose not to hear are two from governments in Farmers Branch, Texas, and Hazelton, Pa., seeking to clarify the authority of governments to limit what undocumented workers can do for a living in the United States.
