Suffrage

August 16, 2012 by

On Aug. 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which stated, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex,” was ratified by Tennessee, giving it 36 States and the two-thirds majority required to make it law.

Even though women in Texas (Miriam Amanda Wallace “Ma” Ferguson) and Wyoming (Nellie Tayloe Ross) succeeded their deceased husbands as Governors in the mid- to late 1920s, most women took to politics slowly. Many women did not vote (some because of threats by their husbands) for many years.

By the mid-1990s the term “soccer mom” had entered the political lexicon, with Republican Presidential candidate Bob Dole’s senior media adviser telling The Wall Street Journal: “She’s the key swing consumer in the marketplace, and the key swing voter who will decide the election.”

Women will play a key role in the upcoming Presidential election as they did in 2008 when President Barack Obama carried the women’s vote by 56 percent to 43 percent. Most polls show Obama again leading among women.

In a May article, POLITICO proclaimed that women will determine the outcome of the Presidential election for the first time.
