According a new study published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, a person’s body receives the greatest benefit from a vitamin D supplement when it is taken with the largest meal of the day.
For the study, a research team from the Cleveland Foundation Bone Clinic recruited 17 patients who were being treated for a vitamin D deficiency, but who were not responding to conventional nutrient supplementation. Participants were then instructed to take their standard vitamin D tablets with their largest meal of the day.
After a median follow-up time of three months, the subjects increased their blood levels of the nutrient by an average of 56 percent.
"This is an important finding for patients being treated for vitamin D deficiency," said senior author Angelo Licata, quoted by Health Day News. "By doing something as simple as changing when you take your vitamin D supplement, you can improve the level in your blood by over 50 percent."
A vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets, low bone mass, osteoporosis and can contribute to heart disease.
