Study Says Depression Treatment Can Help Women Lose Weight

December 29, 2010 by

Study says depression treatment can help women lose weightDepression is an emotional disorder that prevents millions of Americans from enjoying life's greatest pleasures. Individuals who suffer from depression typically have low self-esteem and struggle to perform tasks that most people consider routine.

According to a new study, women who receive treatment for depression are more likely to lose weight. Researchers in Seattle examined 203 women between the ages of 40 and 65 who had an average body mass index (BMI) of 38.3. An individual with a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese.

Each woman in the study underwent baseline tests to measure their weight, level of depression, physical activity and diet. The group received treatment for their depression over a 12-month period, which included up to 26 group sessions. Among the women who saw their depression levels decrease, approximately 38 percent lost at least 5 percent of their body weight over six months.

"This study further underscores the importance of screening for depression in such programs that can potentially lead to both physical and psychological well-being," said Babak Roshanaei-Moghaddam, of the psychiatry and behavioral sciences department at the University of Washington.

The study's lead author, Gregory Simon of the Group Health Research Institute, said that the relationship between depression and physical activity goes in both directions. Increased activity can lead to a better mood, and an improvement in depression can lead to more activity, he said. Although both are linked, Simon said that his team was unable to decipher which factor is more likely to cause the other to improve or worsen.

So What? Women now are supposed to take Psych Drugs to loose weight? Psychs were the FIRST to eliminate Right and Wrong and send our country down the tubes. Mental Disorders are normalized and mainstreamed. This country is being drugged from both ends: Legal Psych and Illegal Street Drugs without any controls,Why? Duh!
Why is this article on this site without any further followup?

If you read the print-out from the pharmacist who fills the anti-depressant prescription, you will find a list of side effects including:
    1. suicide
    2. severe depression
    3. psychosis
    4. violent aggression

Is this worth it just to lose weight?

Virginia Smith , don’t forget the “experts and media” belief of everyone has a problem and a victum. A prime example is all the little kids that are diagonised with AAHD and other alphabet soup letters. If I was going to country school, my teachers would send me out and do 5 laps around the 2 acre school yard if i get to fidgeting or wouldn’t sit still and study. It solved the problem and didn’t need a bunch of b–l siit trained “experts” and studies. We have a nation of poor me suckers in every facet of the nation, including the 2 marxist muslim moron who think they need to always be spending everyone elses money and no stop vacationing. Over the years and a couple of gereations of thinking they are just so stressed at the world, we have a nation of pusified idoits.

What I get from this article is that there may be a correlation between the treatment of depression and weight loss. i41 why do you feel you need to resort to name calling and obscenity to express your opinion? At age 60 it has been my experience that people will listen to someone’s opinion more when it is expressed in a courteous and civil manner, which means you do not call people things like moron, and use obscenity. I have been diagnosed with clinical depression that is resistant to the usual depression medications. I have had some college level classes in anatomy and beginning psychology. There has been medical studies that show that many people do not make enough of certain chemicals in the brain that control mood. As someone who has lived with a spouse who also suffers from depression I know first hand that the treatment of depression with medication does help when it is the right medication. With my medical related classes, and personal experience I also know that many clinically depressed people also benefit greatly from behavioral therapy along with the use of medication.

I’m trying to start up a small blog, primarily to hold a few short stories I’ve written and get feedback, but also for various other blog-type activities. This won’t do me any good if I can’t get my words where people can read them.. . Blogspot is preferred, but anything allowing advertising would be fine. I might want to monetise eventually, and wordpress seems to discourage that, as I understand their terms of use..
