Study: Pork Products Infected With MRSA More Often Than Thought

A recent study by the University of Iowa College of Public Health finds retail pork products in the United States have a higher prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (MRSA) than previously identified.

MRSA occurs in the environment and in raw meat products, and causes an estimated 185,000 cases of food poisoning each year. The bacteria can cause serious, life-threatening infections of the bloodstream, skin, lungs and other organs and is resistant to a number of antibiotics.

The study, published in the online science journal PLoS ONE, represents the largest sampling of raw meat products for MRSA contamination to date in the United States. The researchers collected 395 raw pork samples from 36 stores in Iowa, Minnesota and New Jersey. About 7 percent were contaminated with MRSA.

“This study shows that the meat we buy in our grocery stores has a higher prevalence of staph than we originally thought,” says lead study author Tara Smith, Ph.D. “With this knowledge, we can start to recommend safer ways to handle raw meat products to make it safer for the consumer.”

The researchers say the deadly bacteria likely contaminates the meat in processing plants and found no difference between conventional pork products and those raised without antibiotics or drugs and hormones that promote growth.

    Why don’t we just do away with the F D A and save all the money we waste on them! Even when they do a half a*s job they can still be bought off by the producers!

      Actually that isn’t the problem. The FDA doesn’t have enough employees to cover all the territory to inspect all produce and meat processing plants. Inspecting the thousands of grocery store would also be a daunting task. The burden should fall on the private stores or factories who deliver the product. We had the melon scare in Colorado which cause 23 deaths in the nation. Who inspected this melon farm and said it was safe;it was a private company not the government (FDA). Those farms in Colorado that WERE inspected by the FDA came out clean and safe. We found out that the government does a much more thorough inspection and if something is wrong they reinspect to assure it has been complied with. When these private companies inspect they miss things and then don’t come back until the following year. So the problems that cause the tainted product are still there and infest the crop (such as with our melons).

    Perhaps the meat inspectors should start doing their job and make sure the processing plants mantain a clean enviorment…..and…..
    HAVE EMPLOYEES WASH THEIR HANDS!

    Thus saith the Lord (De. 14:7-8): “These ye shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the cloven hoof; as the camel, and the hare, and the coney; for they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you. And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, het cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.”
    Since there was no penalty for violating those laws, it was generally understood that these laws were for good-health purposes. Violate the law and pay the price.

      I’ve allways had a problem with this verse as it contradicts itself. and by the way,,,, what the heck is a coney?

        It just says ‘clean’ animals are those that have cloven hoofs and chew the cud, they must have both features. Animals that have only one of those features, such as swine and camels, are unclean. With fish, they must both fins and scales. Thus the shark is unclean.

    I agree with James above. According to the Bible Pork is not supposed to be eaten by humans anyway. According to a report I read a few years ago it still relevant. The report stated that pork does not digest well in humans. It causes too much heat for the human body to use correctly. Another report stated that the blood of someone that consumes pork was exactly like someone with Cancer.
    My wife used to tell me that it was in the Old Testament and did not apply. I told her that God I am saved because that is where the 10 Commandments are too.

      Hogs are the carbage disposals on earth. What they eat becomes flesh on their bodies in about twelve hours – they have only one stomach.
      As to Old Testament law, Jesus said (Mt. 5:17-19): “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
      A ‘jot’ is the smallest letter, and a ‘tittle’ is the smallest part of a letter. And, if memory serves, ‘heaven and earth’ have not passed.

    The FDA is more concerned with limiting our access to inexpensive health supplements to please the big Pharm companies than with keeping our food safe from such unimportant matters as mercury , organ arsenic and of coures things like mersa .

    We need the FDA,EPA and all the other protective agencies because of the Greedy Corporations and individuals who refuse to do the right thing. Self discipline and policing is not in their vocabulary. You have to have some control over these people or we will all die. Enforcement of our laws are a must if we want to survive. Regulation is the only way to accomplish this. The penalties are small compared to the amount of money made so they choose to break the law. Tougher laws and the ability to go after the personal assets of the law breakers are a must.

      The FDA and EPA give the illusion they are protecting us, but don’t really do so. Our greatest protection is lawsuits. Remember the salmonella in peanut butter 2 years ago. It turns out no one inspected the factory. Ultimately, the company (not the govt agency that failed to do their job) got sued. An inspection is just a snapshot in time and not what the factory looks like daily anyway. Also, if the EPA did their job correctly, they’d prohibit adding flouride to our water and require all water treatment plants to use technology that removes pharmaceuticals and chemicals from the water they clean and release to rivers/lakes.

      You have a point, but the problem arises when the regulations keep being added and get to the point where they prohibit everything. A person has to use his mind when doing any transaction and all that the regulations do is make a person think that everything is OK. The regulations almost always help the mega institutions and hurt the people and/or the smaller businesses.

    Although the end of the article tries to convince us that even pork grown without antibiotics, drugs, and growth hormones are contaminated and there is no difference. It was still the unregulated overuse of these drugs that were responsible for the evolution of these resistant strains. Of course it’s going to contaminate everything else!!

    I can remember many years ago in health class there was a picture of a piece of raw ham. It was magnitized (I think a thousand times) It showed little worms in the meat. They are trichinoses. They are in all pork and that is why all cook books will tell you to cook pork hotter than other meat, to kill these worms. The bible is 100% right in telling us not to eat pork, and many other things like cat fish and shell fish.

    Dr.Ted Broer in his newsletters has recommended avoiding pork. He cited an incidence where a neurologist had to do brain surgery on a patient who was a pork-eater and found a live worm in the brain from the pork. Also, he cited a study where a tracer was applied to the pork to discover that after it is consumed, from wherever the pork product originated from the pig’s body, it ended up in the same place in the human. Ok, so if that’s not enough of a scare, after this Iowa study, more companies will be jumping on the bandwagon of irradiating our meat supply.

    I’ve not eaten pork/pork products for over 50 years. While studying nutrition back THEN, I learned of similar information Dr. Ted Broer shares in his newsletter. I guess the Kosher or Kashruth Dietary Laws handed down out of the first five books of the Old Testament really knew what it was all about. Now, who wants a ham and cheese sandwich? For those who know about food combining, I just committed a HUGE no-no.

    All, Cook your Pork thoroughly and that kills the Bacteria. The Old Testament rules were for that time B.R.(before Refrigeration), some animals carry bacteria that cause problems for man if not properly handled or cooked.Same goes for Chicken,Eggs,Fish, Rabbit and Hamburger. As for Religion, Christ fulfilled the Old Testament Rules and Laws for all who accept Him.

      Even in an age of refrigeration, pork and other unclean foods remain a health problem on a wider scale than most realize, and all too often, it manifests itself in the form of degenerative diseases caused by more than just parasites, but also the actual composition of the meat, which cannot be properly digested by the human body. You paint with to broad a brush and mistake what Christ really did. With His crusifiction, sacrifices and other rituals of the law were ended, but not the judgements, statutes and commandments, which by His own words, we were to keep. Yes, the law should be written upon your heart, but violate it and pay the price. Millions of good Christians who make this mistake are paying the price, and because of this mistake, most of them don’t even know it even after it’s too late.

    When I lived in Alaska about 25 yrs ago,, butcher shop owner gave me a tour through the university lab. where they were studying different types of game and domestic meats. The pig and bear showed that every test showed trichnossis in those two . Needless to say i never ate bear or pork again …but there was many other reasons ,,

      I agree, if pigs were allowed to graze like cows, they would eat everything and anybody, and die in short order. That’s why they are raised in pens where their diet can be controlled.
