Study: Individuals May Lose More Weight With Green Tea

Antioxidants found in green tea may positively affect the metabolism of overweight individuals, supporting their weight loss efforts, according to a new study from researchers at Oklahoma State University.
The report, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, states that individuals who drank green tea or took nutritional supplements containing an extract from the leaves lost significantly more weight than those who were given a placebo.
Researchers divided the participants up into three groups. They assigned each group to either drink four cups of water each day, drink four cups of green tea, or take nutritional supplements.
The study revealed that those who drank tea lost an average of 5.5 pounds more than the water group, while those who were given supplements lost 4.9 additional pounds.
Arpita Basu, who led the investigation, told The Los Angeles Times that green tea contains high levels of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant which, in addition to supporting weight loss, may also contribute to a healthy heart.
She added that adding green tea or nutritional supplements could benefit an individual’s weight loss plan.
