Stranded In Snow, Missing Couple Wrote Goodbye Letters To Loved Ones

CODY, Wyo. (UPI) — A Wisconsin couple, stranded for six days in a Wyoming snowstorm, said they expected to die so they wrote farewell letters to loved ones before they were found.

Vacationers Mark and Kristine Wathke were stranded on Wyoming’s Beartooth Highway and down to eight pieces of bread, a half jar of jelly and a few bottles of water when a rancher located them Monday.

They told ABC News Tuesday they spent their moments before rescue writing goodbye notes.

“(I) had a little notebook in my purse and … took each family member and friend and I wrote to them what they meant to me, and just letting them know that I love them,” Kristine Wathke said.

The couple’s car was stalled by snowdrifts on a highway closed in the winter due to treacherous weather conditions.

“We never saw any road-closed sign, any barricades, anything indicating it was trouble,” she said.

Rancher Tony Barrett searched for the couple on his snowmobile after his wife read about their situation, ABC News said. He found them on their sixth day of frigid temperatures, snow and dwindling food supplies.
