Statist Thugs And The Rocks They Crawl Out From Under

A mass exodus from ignorance and organized opposition to tyranny is the dream of every freedom-loving person within the liberty movement today. We would like nothing better than to put an end to the expanding establishment police state in the most peaceful manner possible. We dream of a day when a transition back to the Constitutional values that once made America brilliantly unique in the world is possible, and when it can be accomplished without incredible pain or terrible bloodshed. We long for that once-in-a-century uprising, that great march, that spontaneous eruption of the citizenry demanding a more truthful government. At the same time, though, we realize that such events are rare and that few, if any, great changes in the history of man are made without sacrifice and without direct confrontation.

The reason why peaceful and popular activism almost never occurs successfully, the reason why good people are made to stand and suffer, falls not only to the establishment elites who seek out and abuse power; others share in the blame. Regardless of the age, the culture or the social conditions, there is always a percentage of the general populace that embraces the totalitarian dynamic. There is always someone in our neighborhood, workplace and within our family who finds vindication or advantage in supporting the state, even if the state has turned viciously criminal. They are not only useful idiots; they are conscious participants in the process of pacification and enslavement of their own society. They understand their role perfectly, and they enjoy what they do.

In his examination of the rise of violent fascism in Germany as well as the collectivist surveillance state in communist Russia, psychologist Carl Jung theorized that there is in fact a certain percentage of people in any given epoch that carry within them a latent ability to abandon conscience. That is to say, there is always hidden within a portion of the multitude an inborn potential for sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies. These tendencies remain dormant for many people under most circumstances. But, every once in a while, a society falters to the point where such diseases of the soul are encouraged, and the monsters are allowed to come out and play.

Is it possible that some men are more apt toward truth and freedom while others take more naturally to dominance and deceit? Perhaps. I find that under certain circumstances even the best human beings can make catastrophic errors in judgment. However, there is a difference between those who misstep in life and those who savor destruction. For these people I reserve the label of the “statist thug,” a ghoul in common man’s drag just waiting for the opportunity to scrape out a spoonful of petty authority and assert his will over others. These folks are the day’s damned. And, what’s worse, though they may have been born with a predisposition towards despotism, they still had a choice and they chose villainy. They deserve no special treatment from us.

As America faces down wave after wave of fiscal difficulties, a government gone rogue with false left/right politics and policies that disregard civil liberties for the sake of centralized authority, I believe the statist thugs of our time will soon flow out of the dark recesses and rotten sputtering gutters of our society like a river of septic putrescence. We all know them when we see them, but do we really understand what makes them tick? Here are some common psychological attributes of the overzealous statist, the failings and inadequacies that make him what he is.

Statist Thugs Thrive During Immoral Times

The worst statists are utter screw-ups and failures in normal or semi-normal environments. They barely have the ability to function without constant surrounding chaos and desperation, which they use to camouflage their spastic and childish characters. They are often seen as the dregs of a culture during peaceful years and climb to prominence only when crisis overtakes the nation. When a social environment turns tenuous or explosive, the statist excels. Corrupt governments require the aid of questionable individuals in order to tighten control at the local level, so anyone willing to set aside morality and principle automatically becomes a highly valued commodity. Statists will flock to government employment during national “emergencies” or unjust wars and use the inbred system to their advantage.

Statist Thugs Want Respect, Even If They Don’t Deserve It

Statists demand respect, and they will pursue authoritative positions just so they can remind people of the respect they are supposedly owed. Some of them realize that legitimate respect is earned through valuable works, knowledge, experience and generous creativity. They know it cannot be bought and that it cannot be conned through clever talk, boastful discussion and theatrical chest-beating. So instead of attempting real achievement or taking the risk of falsely playing a part and being exposed, they look for a title and a uniform to fill the void. They eventually attain respect derived by force through institutions within the system. This title will likely be a miniscule part of the overall government conglomerate, but the statist will act as if he is the emperor of Earth once you wander into his narrow jurisdiction. The slightest hint of defiance will send him into fits of rage.

Statist Thugs Understand Only Violence

Keep in mind that not every person in a uniform is a statist; identifying a statist is more a matter of examining behavior than outward appearance. There is no such thing as reason, logic or even law in the realm of the statist thug. You cannot discuss a matter of conflict with him. You cannot point out that the legal structure he claims to represent does not support his views. You cannot calm him using words and solid philosophy. The only thing he understands is power, and the only thing that he regards is strength. When faced with overwhelming reason, the statist will attack rather than think. This attack, unfortunately, will be silenced only by an equal or greater display of force.

Statist Thugs Savor Weakness In Others

Show any signs of fear or weakness, and you have given the statist exactly what he has always wanted. He does not desire an equal fight. In truth, he avoids situations in which his opponents are fairly matched. This is because, deep down, all statists and powermongers are cowards. Anyone who is so desperate to control every aspect of his environment even to the point of hurting and enslaving others is obviously afraid of a great many things. Attempting to be quietly diplomatic or grasping for mercy only encourages them to take their maliciousness to the next level. Statists seek easy prey to satiate their thirst for dominance. They will abuse women, children, the elderly and the disabled, anyone who cannot defend himself. As soon as the goon encounters a person willing and able to fight back, however, his smug façade disappears and the hidden coward emerges.

Statist Thugs Love Law For The Law’s Sake

Statists revel in bureaucracy and red tape. They love laws and regulations regardless of application. They feel safe within a highly structured and contained system because most of them are followers, not leaders. The idea that they may one day have to blaze their own path without the aid of a vast government machine cradling them like lost infants is terrifying to them. Statists are not able to survive without someone telling them what to do and when to do it. On the other side of the coin, they also enjoy the manner in which the modern legal framework can be twisted to fit whatever disturbed logic happens to strike them. The more a society is cluttered with overt legalities, the easier it is to misinterpret and exploit the distraction and confusion they create.

Anyone Can Be A Statist

Many people (myself included) have never found much solace in the establishment and its parade of self-importance. For me, most methodologies of government have always been a sick kind of joke. Elaborate buildings and ceremonies, nice suits and uniforms, the money and the celebrity, the news shows and talking heads: It’s all costume. It’s a parade of drunken clowns and carneys dipped in glamour, glitter and pomp.

The very concept of government is in itself an abstraction. It is an artificial social edifice that seems to give weaker men a sense of security (or false security), even when it is at bottom a threat to them. The assumption is that the establishment (meaning the power elite) must exist at all costs. The statist cannot imagine otherwise. He is at once a fan of the totalitarian game and an avid bouncing, giggling cheerleader. His greatest dream is to be a part of the beast, to share in the “glory” of the empire and live vicariously through its conquests.

A statist thug can be anyone, from the overweight and overzealous Transportation Security Administration agent at the airport to the brutally nosy and vicious old woman next door. Some participate in tyranny directly by wearing the uniform and wielding the baton, while others participate behind closed doors and curtains by informing on their neighbors. Regardless of their demeanor, each statist has one thing in common: an obsession with the continuance of the system to the point of madness. There is absolutely nothing the state can do to make them second guess their love affair — no crime too shocking, no attack too unjust. During the blackest moments of mankind, they are the willing tools of oppression. They make revolution — physical revolution — necessary. With them, oligarchs take root. Without them, oligarchs take shelter or disappear altogether.

Only 50% of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention owned slaves and Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Franklin (yes, Ben owned slaves) are only minor players anyway. Easy to dismiss.

        The people you call “manipulators” are actually hard working producers. They are the people that make America strong. Who are your heroes? The people who accept welfare and unemployment checks? Or the people that represent the people who accept these checks (i.e. the democratic party).

        What I understand, Eddie, is that your comments are rarely factual. Anybody, who uses Force to take property from other people, is bad. If those companies use Government to protect them from competition and otherwise support them at other peoples’ expense (taxpayers, consumers, competitors, etc.) then they are Bad. Unionists are Bad for the same reason — Feathering their own nests at other peoples’ unwilling expense.
        But you don’t clarify what makes them bad, Eddie. It’s safer that way isn’t it?

      Christopher, yes many of the Founding Fathers owned slaves. However, they did agree that slavery was wrong and put into the original documents that slavery was to end. They also knew that there would be no way to get all 13 colonies to agree to a constitution that banned slavery and decided that they had to compromise on that issue, delaying it. It was later congressional acts that extended the date for the ending of slavery.

        A lot of people said it was their “personal choice” if they wanted to own slaves-a decision between them and their auctioneers.
        In addition slaveholders passed laws to force other people to hand over runaways and otherwise violate their consciences regarding this matter as well as laws which made it difficult if not impossible for others to mannumitt slaves they inherited or otherwise involuntarily acquired.
        Never mind that their “personal choices’ violated the rights of other people including free Whites!

        Patriot1776- I’m a patriot, too (born on July 4th) but, if they knew it was wrong, then why were they doing it? That actually is NOT good character, I hate to say it, because the truly moral man would refuse to “own” slaves even if it meant his standard of living would be much reduced. Jefferson has always been an enigma to me- such eloquent words on all men being created equal, etc, but at the same time a slaveholder and, apparently, even an abuser of his slaves (at least sexually). You could say that nobody’s perfect, but that’s a little extreme, don’t you think?!

        Chris, the founding fathers knew that the Constitution was not a perfect document, that is why they allowed for the addition of the ammendments and provided a method for the Constitution to be modified. The need to unite the colonies superceded the short term concesions to gain the consensus of all. It is unfortunate that a stand could not have been made at that point in time, but the reality of the human condition would not have allowed for the fight between the colonies and the revolution against the British.

      Also, get your facts straight. Washington DID free the slaves he owned and he predeceased Martha anyway.. Martha’s slaves were the ones that were never freed, not even after her death. She had inherited her slaves from her first husband and Washington had no control over what she did with them. “Negroes” should be upset with Martha, not George

        Martha’s NEVER were, even after her death. That caused much suffering as HIS slaves were freed and HER slaves were not—-families were torn asunder, etc.

        That’s the distinction I sought to make, and it’s a bit paranoid and undiscerning of you to think that I was trying to whitewash the truth and “increase the prestige” of the founding fathers. FIFTY PERCENT of the framers of the Constitution were slave-owners and wrote a document that kept human beings in bondage for another 75 years—and that is a BLOT on what this country is supposed to stand for.           One of the reasons conservatives are ambivalent at best about education is that students’ minds are often changed. In my era, many students entered college with their parents’ beliefs (conservative, Republican, pro-Viet Nam War, etc.) only to find they didn’t believe any of that stuff at all once they were exposed to actual ideas. I did a study in college correlating self-esteem levels with political party switching. Guess what? It was a highly positive correlation, but there were no students who switched from Democrat to Republican. This was the early to mid 70s.

          Ideas about people are not like sports allegiances. If you grow up a Red Sox fan, you’re never going to like the Yankees. The same is not true of racial attitudes. Many southern white kids who grew up in totally racist (that’s anti-Black, anti-Jewish, even anti-Catholic) environments completely change their attitudes once they get away from their upbringing and see the world. So, regardless of the mythologies you grew up believing about Jews, you went to school, you’ve studied history, and you’re now a big boy. If you still think Jews have horns, it’s on you – not your family, your neighborhood, or your friends.

        Although I’m not sure how the 17th Amendment usurps the original intent of the Constitution, or allows central government to grow ever-larger, simply by amending the election of senators to popular vote of the State residents, rather than by state legislatures… I agree that the 16th Amendment is a usurpation and thus not a core principle of the constitution. Just like alcohol prohibition, which was a usurpation as well; it too can be repealed.

        I think the point of the matter in saying a ‘return to the constitution’ is about adhering to what we have, as the law of the land, rather than ignoring it to pass such grotesque legislation like the NDAA, which for some reason causes the rights that it tramples to require reaffirmation by more legislation (like Rand Paul is trying to do). I think this is what is meant by “return to the Constitution”.

        Saying a ‘return to the constitution’ in this way, while still not agreeing with certain parts of it, isn’t a contradiction. Take the 18th Amendment for example. Mistakes can be made, and they can also be repealed.

        Btw… I don’t see a real problem with the commerce clause. I think it is often construed to mean something that it doesn’t and we can reference the debates at its inception to determine the true meaning and intent quite easily.

        The great debate on the Bill of Rights (generally the first 10-11 Amendments) took place over 200 years ago. But I’m sure the people of this site and of this country like the other 7 just as much – 3rd Amendment (quartering of soldiers), 5 (rights in criminal cases), 6 (right to a fair trial), 7 (rights in civil cases), 8 (bail, fines, punishment), 9 (rights retained by the people), 10 (state rights). I doubt any reasonable person would object to 13 & 14. I also don’t have a problem with the 22nd (presidential term limits) or 24th (abolition of poll taxes) etc. …. but I don’t have to agree with all of the Amendments.

        I see no contradiction.

        Elementary, my dear TML. The Founders knew that the law making branch of the Federal Government — The Congress — had the most potential for abuse. So they broke it into two branches — The House of Representatives and the Senate. Keep in mind that the Constitution was written as a pact between the States to create a National Government whose primary mission would be to deal with foreign countries. So, in their wisdom, they created the House to represent and be elected by the people, and the Senate to represent and be elected by the States. They also knew that the State Legislators would be more politically attuned than would be the ordinary citizens. If they had wanted the people to elect all Congressional Representatives they would have just created one body called Congress.

        As an avid advocate for state rights, that’s very difficult to argue against…. the elementary simplicity had not occurred to me. I guess if there is any argument (or defense) to be made, it’s in (as you pointed out) the general assumption of ignorance by the “ordinary citizen” in the face of an actively informed citizenry promoted by the 1st Amendment. Even the state legislature may be made up of “ordinary citizens” such as Suzanna Hupp of Texas, but I suppose once placed in such a position, being ‘politically attuned’ is kind of a job. “Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights.” – Thomas Jefferson.

        It’s not just Negro males who would depend on their lawyer… anyone faced with legal proceedings would be wise to seek out a lawyer. That is their job to zealously represent their client within the bounds of the law. Self-incrimination (the fifth) is a big deal as what they say is true “anything you say can and will be used against you”. Anyone… white, black, red, purple… doesn’t matter – anyone who found themselves in a criminal legal proceeding would want the same kind of protection. If, out of their own prejudice, one felt others should not have this, then yes, it would be a colossal hypocrisy, or contradiction, and I could think of a few other ‘labels’ better suited for them than ‘personal libertarian’, lol.

      There is a quiet, but obvious war raging against white people in America. LaRaza, an openly racist organization, wants to pack up whitey and send him back to Europe. Whites, particularly white men, are denied entrance into US medical schools, while everyone else, particularly foreign students, of color, are admitted in droves. They didn’t choose to go there, but, instead, were forced there by invaders from the south. What did this create? Well, pretty tough people, the Vikings, the Visogoths, the Gauls, the Franks, etc. They were pushed north by peoples of color. Who’s the real minority on the face of the earth? White people.       The numbers reveal the deadening effects of inequality in our country, and confirm that tax avoidance, rather than a lack of middle-class initiative, is the cause.
      1. Only THREE PERCENT of the very rich are entrepreneurs.
      According to both Marketwatch and economist Edward Wolff, over 90 percent of the assets owned by millionaires are held in a combination of low-risk investments (bonds and cash), personal business accounts, the stock market, and real estate. Only 3.6 percent of taxpayers in the top .1% were classified as entrepreneurs based on 2004 tax returns. A 2009 Kauffman Foundation study found that the great majority of entrepreneurs come from middle-class backgrounds, with less than 1 percent of all entrepreneurs coming from very rich or very poor backgrounds.
      2. Only FOUR OUT OF 150 countries have more wealth inequality than us.
      In a world listing compiled by a reputable research team (which nevertheless prompted double-checking), the U.S. has greater wealth inequality than every measured country in the world except for Namibia, Zimbabwe, Denmark, and Switzerland.
      3. An amount equal to ONE-HALF the GDP is held untaxed overseas by rich Americans.
      The Tax Justice Network estimated that between $21 and $32 trillion is hidden offshore, untaxed. With Americans making up 40% of the world’s Ultra High Net Worth Individuals, that’s $8 to $12 trillion in U.S. money stashed in far-off hiding places.
      Based on a historical stock market return of 6%, up to $750 billion of income is lost to the U.S. every year, resulting in a tax loss of about $260 billion.
      4. Corporations stopped paying HALF OF THEIR TAXES after the recession.
      After paying an average of 22.5% from 1987 to 2008, corporations have paid an annual rate of 10% since. This represents a sudden $250 billion annual loss in taxes.
      U.S. corporations have shown a pattern of tax reluctance for more than 50 years, despite building their businesses with American research and infrastructure. They’ve passed the responsibility on to their workers. For every dollar of workers’ payroll tax paid in the 1950s, corporations paid three dollars. Now it’s 22 cents.
      5. Just TEN Americans made a total of FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS in one year.
      That’s enough to pay the salaries of over a million nurses or teachers or emergency responders.
      That’s enough, according to 2008 estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the UN’s World Food Program, to feed the 870 million people in the world who are lacking sufficient food.
      For the free-market advocates who say “they’ve earned it”: Point #1 above makes it clear how the wealthy make their money.
      6. Tax deductions for the rich could pay off 100 PERCENT of the deficit.
      Another stat that required a double-check. Based on research by the Tax Policy Center, tax deferrals and deductions and other forms of tax expenditures (tax subsidies from special deductions, exemptions, exclusions, credits, capital gains, and loopholes), which largely benefit the rich, are worth about 7.4% of the GDP, or about $1.1 trillion.
      Other sources have estimated that about two-thirds of the annual $850 billion in tax expenditures goes to the top quintile of taxpayers.
      7. The average single black or Hispanic woman has about $100 IN NET WORTH.
      The Insight Center for Community Economic Development reported that median wealth for black and Hispanic women is a little over $100. That’s much less than one percent of the median wealth for single white women ($41,500).
      Other studies confirm the racially-charged economic inequality in our country. For every dollar of NON-HOME wealth owned by white families, people of color have only one cent.
      8. Elderly and disabled food stamp recipients get $4.30 A DAY FOR FOOD.
      Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) has dropped significantly over the past 15 years, serving only about a quarter of the families in poverty, and paying less than $400 per month for a family of three for housing and other necessities. Ninety percent of the available benefits go to the elderly, the disabled, or working households.
      Food stamp recipients get $4.30 a day.
      9. Young adults have lost TWO-THIRDS OF THEIR NET WORTH since 1984.
      21- to 35-year-olds: Your median net worth has dropped 68% since 1984. It’s now less than $4,000.
      That $4,000 has to pay for student loans that average $27,200. Or, if you’re still in school, for $12,700 in credit card debt.
      With an unemployment rate for 16- to 24-year-olds of almost 50%, two out of every five recent college graduates are living with their parents. But your favorite company may be hiring. Apple, which makes a profit of $420,000 per employee, can pay you about $12 per hour.
      10. The American public paid about FOUR TRILLION DOLLARS to bail out the banks.
      That’s about the same amount of money made by America’s richest 10% in one year. But we all paid for the bailout. And because of it, we lost the opportunity for jobs, mortgage relief, and educational funding.
      Bonus for the super-rich: A QUADRILLION DOLLARS in securities trading nets ZERO sales tax revenue for the U.S.
      The world derivatives market is estimated to be worth over a quadrillion dollars (a thousand trillion). At least $200 trillion of that is in the United States. In 2011 the Chicago Mercantile Exchange reported a trading volume of over $1 quadrillion on 3.4 billion annual contracts.
      A quadrillion dollars. A sales tax of ONE-TENTH OF A PENNY on a quadrillion dollars could pay off the deficit. But the total sales tax was ZERO.
      It’s not surprising that the very rich would like to fudge the numbers, as they have the nation.

        Obviously, neither you, nor the sources you claim (if they even said that), know what you’re talking about. There is nothing “low-risk” about bonds or cash. Bonds go down in value when interest rates go up, and dollars go down in value when the Federal Reserve creates more of them. To mitigate that risk, you have to understand the current Economic Environment and the resultant effects of specific investment vehicles.
        And most of those instruments mentioned (bonds, stock, and real estate) do indeed support entrepreneurial activity in various ways, if not directly then indirectly.
        Most importantly, it’s NONE of YOUR BUSINESS, Rhonda, what people do with their OWN legally acquired money. Regardless of their investment choices, Rhonda, you do not have a right to steal their money to spend on the items of YOUR choice.

        I think this item is referring to income inequality rather than wealth inequality.
        World wealth inequality is much harder to pin down since the wealthy hide their $$$.
        You CAN find data on wealth inequality for the US alone and it appalling.

        The CIA study that most world income studies rely on as a source uses 136 countries
        The US ranked 45th. in the latest report.
        That means only 44 out of 136 have more wealth inequality than us.

        Namibia and Zimbabwe do rank lower than the US but Denmark and Switzerland DO NOT.
        Denmark in fact ranks 133 out of 136—only three countries do better.
        This item may not have been “double-checked” and may misinform.

        And that last statement IS a shame, because the truth about how the US stacks up in world income inequality and income/wealth inequality within the country is a story that needs to be told. I couldn’t find a source for this item—-do you have one besides the Buzzflash article?

        Here is a SIMPLE plan that can work for all of us:
        The fed should get money directly from the federal reserve…there is NO legtimate need to tax the people. Never was. Money does not need to flow out of MY pockets first, then flow into the coffers of the federal government, that method is antiquated and outdated, but POPULAR, as it imposes a BURDEN on the least wealthy, and strengthens the wealthy by penalizing the poorest people and stripping what little they have as to overburden them with the most debt. You can easily enslave a people of a nation that operates and idolizes wealth, but despises poor. This is EXACTLY what taxation does…taxes the poorest people the most, and keeps the wealthiest people even wealthier by doing so.
        This feeding of a monster known as the federal(or feral) government was created long ago, before anybody actualy THOUGHt about the routing of monies through the nation and goernment. It has always been this way, and will always remain so, if we chosse to do nothing. There is NO legitimate requirement for there to be ANY poor people, it is HOW the money is taken, and by whom, that is the crux of the issue.
        Our very tax code states this point blank! Tax the poorest peope the heaviest and leave the cream of the money in the hands of the richest. provide tax shelters for the rich, but create more tax penalties for the poor. How else can one explain HOW a person can claim travel expenses to go to his high rise office, yet a poor person can not claim travel expenses to go to his place of employment, even though they both do EXACTLY the same thing? Taxation CREATES POOR PEOPLE! ELIMINATE TAXES and you create WEALTH FOR ALL…That’s fair, considering that ALL people have the same ability to grow, but TAXES keeps certain people from EVER getting ahead, while others just keep getting richer off the work of others! This taxation machine has always been UNJUST and UNFAIR to 99% of the workers. Why is it okay fr a pencil pushing IDIOT to make MILLIONS while the person doing the work makes chicken feed that MAKES the miilionaire his riches? Is it okay to toil under the feet of another simply because they are now rich,means it is just to stomp them into the ground? With the poor, the more you make, the MORE TAXES YOU PAY, but the rich, it is just the opposite…the MORE you make, the LESS TAXES you pay!

        Charles – Did you research the chemo before starting on poison? I was diagnosed with hcv 11 years ago and did my own research before following the wishes of my own Dr. God gastro. After hearing the horror stories from people who had permanent physical problems from the chemo, I chose to just take better care of my body by taking good supplements and eating right. Two years later my 2nd biopsy was better than the first, although the gasto poo-poohed it. Had I chosen chemo I would have had to close my business. It is 11 years later, and I am in excellent health.

        I do understand that some regulation is necessary, and to further the aims of free commerce, that is definitely an area where they are needed. But, case in point: Obamacare has forced a lot of small employers to lay people off, or drastically reduce other benefits just to satisfy the costs/regulations that come with that particular legislation. Another “benefit” of Obamacare is, doctors THEMSELVES are required to join ACO’s where their health care determinations will be monitored by an oversight board. To that end, a physician friend of mine says that HE and HE ALONE is allowed to enter the records into the computer. He now sees less patients a day, and has had to let 2 other workers in the office go. This is just one example, if you look out there, the examples are legion. I’m sorry, this is big government just going off the rails!

          If you define taxation as theft, then it is theft, but only a moron or a CB would so define it. People band together to do certain things (wage war, police, fire, etc., etc.) and they cost money. Taxes are imposed to do those things and some CB says I’m not paying.       Sandy WAS a “monster” in it’s IMPACT, which is the true measure of a storm. Do you not recall that it reached as far as MN and into Canada? That it was one of the geographically broadest storms we have seen? That it was called a “frankenstorm” because of it’s uniqueness? FEMA is doing as much as it can under truly difficult circumstances, and much better than in its “Heckuva Job, Brownie” days.

      (and don’t forget which party wants to do away with FEMA, EPA, FDA, SEC and any other agency that stands in the way of the greedy 1% as they accumulate more weakth at the expense of the 99%)

      Action on Sandy’s destruction was as fast as possible under the circumstances. Are you really not aware of the size of that storm? In recorded weather history, there has never been another one like it. As far as I’m concerned, the only thing they might have done would have been to call in the military to help, although they did use the National Guard and Coast Guard.

        Our corporate tax is set at 35%, true, but the exemptions, write-offs, credits, and subsidies available to our “multinationals” to offset the expense of setting up shop offshore, when combined accrue to the tune of $30-40 BILLION in tax dollars per year… Plus, our corporatists have been parking their vast wealth (some “multinationals” pull down $40 BILLION in profits, but thanks to all these loopholes, pay only around 17% in taxes) in offshore accounts to avoid paying in to their nation of origin from whom they garnish their largest profits.

        If you look into the regulations that have been pumped out, for example during this administration, compared to past 18 years, they have been on an even par.

The only difference now is that there are more people, and we hear about every little thing that happens. There are more promoting spirituality now then ever before; and more and more people are coming into the fold.           What old days are you talking about and how old can you be anyway? The Securities Laws have criminalized insider trading since 1933. In the 1920s and before, the Stock Market was fixed by insiders. I got a taste of what it was like when I invested a bit in penny stocks in the early 80s. I had a friend who worked as a broker for one of the penny stock operations in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas firms were bad, but the real crooks were in Denver. I found out that if your broker was one of the big guys in the firm, you could make some money, but if you had one of the little guys, you had no chance. The firm often made the market and when you were buying it was the firm’s big shots who were selling.

          I was a young guy and didn’t lose that much money, but it’s easy to see how people got swindled out of their life savings that way. It’s easy to say “caveat emptor” in the abstract, but when you see real people get ripped off, there’s a tendency to want to stop the practice. That usually involves government.

    Nothing on God’s green earth will advance the subjugation of the USA and its citizens or threaten our sovereignty more than this steady move toward Plutocracy. The insidious use of BIG $$$ by the Plutocrats for influence in our legislature for policies that have benefitted their bottom line has opened the floodgates for our magnificent industrial base to be flung to the four winds, our working class to be kicked to the curb, and our financial industry to become dependent of the derivatives from slave labor abroad, while the middle class languishes and more and more of our citizens slip into poverty.

They further propagate the feeling that paying taxes to the beautiful USA is for chumps, and would have us believe, through some kind of reverse psychology, that the USA Government is the enemy. Diabolically twisted!

    My attempt to discern the intent of these types of opinion pieces has me thinking back to the Third Reich when the propaganda machine whipped up this type of fear and loathing, preying on the worst instincts of human nature to hoodwink the masses to the real motives of the Nazis. The Great Sellout of the USA, perpetrated by the elite against the middle class and poor to consolidate wealth and power at the top as they pit us, one against another, needs deceptive cover like the articles I’ve been reading in these propaganda pieces to fool the masses, while we march steadily toward a Plutocracy with its victims in strenuous, full-throated approval.

        Your reference to “The Big Ripoff” practically endorsed the premise of my rant about The Great Sellout, in that it points to how corporations and BIG $$$ use their influence to monopolize and steer the market through Govt. regulations that create impediments to the free market for lesser “well-heeled” enterprizes. Aside from the inflationary results and additional cost incurred in these regulations to corner markets through favorable legislation, lobbied incessantly for by major corporations, the difference in my thrust is the treasonous nature of our offshoring corporations GIVING our trade secrets, technological know-how, yankee ingenuity, manufacturing methods, you name it, to our competitors to turn a larger profit at the expense of their nation of origin.

      Not impossible, but I think it’s more the way the reply thing is set up. Things get very disjointed rather quickly as more people comment and replies get separated from the comments they address. Bob should take some of his “gold and silver coins” and pay someone to improve that aspect of the site. If you look hard enough, you will likely find the comments by EDDIE47 have been pushed far away from where you remembered them to be.

I saw it and responded it was totally racist, but then the offending words were removed, leaving my post looking kind of silly. Perhaps when words are removed, some indication of their nature could be left. (e.g. racist diatribe, sexual innuendo, etc.)

        In defense of the comments policy, I think it works pretty well and is actually applied quite liberally.

        It states in part “….but we will not tolerate racism, profanity or slanderous comments toward the author(s) or comment participants. Make your case passionately, but civilly. Please don’t stoop to name calling…..”. I have seen many comments that are racist and others that are at least borderline slanderous, as well as a lot of what looks like name calling to me—-all have been allowed to stand. I think the First Amendment is pretty much alive and well here (even if rationality is often not).

        The spam filters will catch some of the words, like the word beginning with S and ending with T and with HI in the middle if you say it straight out but won’t catch what I just wrote.. Anyone whose vocabulary is not broad enough to use words that convey their meaning without being “moderated” doesn’t belong on the site.

        I got caught once and the “bad” word was deleted/moderated. It WAS replaced by some comment to that effect in parens.

        I think what we really need on this site is a stupidity-ignorance-mindlessness filter so that certain folks like “he-who-is-ignored-by-more-and-more of-us” could be kept from cl;uttering up the threads. I would also like to see a filter that catches all the idiotic, disrespectful, and childish things that President O’Bama is called. The “Obummer” stuff just gets in the way.

Even Obama’s half brother has written a book where he states that Africa would have been better off if the whites had been allowed to fully develop its potential. Then, they could have run the white men off. No, they ran the whites off too early and now, it’s a diseased up toilet with hundreds of millions of starving people. As a person of Cherokee decent, I and my family hate to look at a $20 bill, because it has Andrew Jackson on it. It reminds us of the trail of tears and the fact that we tried to get along with the white man and he stabbed us in the back by stealing our land and shipping us out to Oklahoma. That being said, Native Americans failed themselves by ignoring Tecumseh’s ideal to consolidate and organize the tribes against the white invasion. However, had that sad chapter in history not happened, others, probably yellow invaders, would have come to our shores and might have been worse. I don’t think the Japanese would have been anykinder, looking back on the rape of NanKing and Shanghi. It is what it is, and at least, as minorities, we have advantages and our reservations, as well as our heritage, which is honored by the white man, today. We are part of a powerful nation, which is going down the toilet. Regardless of America’s past sins, against a multitude of peoples, it’s still the best show on the face of the earth. I would liked to see it get better, and continue to evolve into something greater than it is, today. But, I don’t see it happening.

It’s about not letting tyrants keep the people divided by labeling each of us as Red/Blue state, rich/poor or the color or religion. We have our difference & always will, but we must find the common ground to be successful.

    What this article is really talking about is a new order of brownshirts, or the TSA. I love the Southpark episode, which turned them into the Toilet Safety Agency. People had to wear seat belts to sit on their toilets. TSA agents were on hand at ever bathroom in America to check peoples butt holes before they sat down on the toilet. Cameras were in every bathroom, just to make sure you didn’t fall in. The fact is that scum will always be available for dictators. Think about it; an army of drooling Barney Fifes, except they won’t have a gun and one bullet. They’ll be carrying 40 cals with hollow points. In fact, they’ve purchased 1.2 billion 40 caliber hollow point round over the last year. Who are those hollow points for?

    I have been reminded that I just saw the movie Lincoln. I recommend it to all. Daniel Day-Lewis is a sure Oscar winner, as is the screenplay/script, and others like Sally Field may win supporting nominations. The movie is moving to the point of bringing on tears at several points, especially in the very beginning and near the very end, where Lincoln delivers his second inaugural address, quoted below in its entirety. Moving words then and now, especially the last ten lines.

    My Fellow-Countrymen:

    At this second appearing to take the oath of the Presidential office there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. Then a statement somewhat in detail of a course to be pursued seemed fitting and proper. Now, at the expiration of four years, during which public declarations have been constantly called forth on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention and engrosses the energies of the nation, little that is new could be presented. The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself, and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union even by war, while the Government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it. Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it has already attained. Slaves were all the local chieftans had to trade for goods, they sold their own people into slavery over two centuries ago, and they are still doing it today, by this I don’t mean any one race, more specifically, they are selling ALL of us and future generations yet unborn into slavery to foreign creditors, all our assets, all our possible incomes, are owed to someone else. Politicians lie, cheat and steal … and so does most of the rest of humanity. Good luck changing it by wasting energy here.       I share your sentiments. I don’t know why you came on this site but I have been a subscriber for a year now. I subscribed mainly to have access to yet another viewpoint. I check out dozens of sites all across the spectrum and have found many that would evoke the same feelings in you as this one does. This one, however, is one of the most “blood in the water” of all the right-leaning sites, and that’s saying something.

      I haven’t commented very often during the last year but have been doing so more often over the past few weeks, mainly because I have more time on my hands now that the right side has won the election. It’s also a good anti-Alzheimers exercise—one’s brain does get a workout trying to convince the majority of the folks on this site of anything but what they want to believe. Open-mindedness, rationality, and intellectual honesty is in short supply on this site. My right brain thinking does tell me that I’m mostly tilting at windmills here but that is a failing of progressive-liberal folks. We can’t believe some people can be so irrational.

      The response you received from Ted is typical, although far milder than what you can expect from those I call the “junk yard dogs”. They will likely appear to say their usual “blood in the water” things to me. I throw some blood at times, too. Hey DaveH, I’m talking about you! .

      Michael, there’s much to be said for civil discourse and the sharing of ideas as a means to the ends of educating/becoming educated, and being informed. Clearing up deceptions are valuable in arriving at the truth, and there is no monopoly on truth. One’s perspective, however, may avail different truths, e.g. conservative vs. liberal ideologues.

      Both conservatives and liberals, for example, believe that they have a commonality in that they are both concerned with what’s the best path for the health and vitality of the USA. That both sides have excesses and faults that need to be addressed, and strengths and virtues that should be sought, is, quite simplistically, the truth.

      It seems that we’ve arrived at a place where ideologues would shove their agenda front and foremost to the point where compromise has become a dirty word, or connotes capitulation, a notion that has its origin in the deadly sins, especially, pride and avarice, but also, greed and sloth.

      I will try my hand at a basic commonality; how about national security. What say ye? Can we agree on that? If so, now, how best to arrive at a blended means of achieving that end? There may be some things to adrere to as well as some sacrifices that come to mind for both sides.

      It is not productive to condemn, convict, and demonize the other side, yet out of frustration that is exactly what is done. The trick is to, with a steady eye, fix oufr gaze at our problems, and unflinchingly strive to avoid the, “yea but…” rejoinders that begin the whole process of justification, and defensiveness that breaks down and erases communication.

I agree with all that you said but am not as optimistic as you—not after watching what has gone on in this country over the past four years and particularly during the election. In fact the difference between the “D’s” and the “R’s” is more about who is in charge than it is about substance. Both think the all controlling State is OK. As long as it is THEM in charge of it.             In writing his books on LBJ, Robert Caro has come to the conclusion that power reveals. You could say the same thing for actions in a crisis. What did W do in response to the 911 Crisis? He used it cynically to invade Iraq. The Neocons who ran his Administration wanted to invade Iraq from the minute they took office, but they couldn’t have sold it to Congress without 911. The crisis revealed who they really were.

            Obama, in response to the economic crisis he faced in 2009, kept his cool and did what had to be done to prevent another Depression. He did it with zero help from the Republicans, personal insults from his opponents, and accusations of all sorts of plans to enslave the country. Well, he’s been re-elected and we’ll see that all the fear-mongering from the right has been an exercise in paranoia, partially fueled by good old fashioned racism. In the Confederate States, Obama’s share of the White vote was as low as 10-15%. Does that tell you more about Obama or the real base of the Republican Confederate Party?

            Obumma signed NDAA, re-authorized the Patriot Act, killed Americans without trial in drone strikes, killed thousands as “collateral damage” in other drone strikes, spent over 5 trillion dollars which we do not have, appointed dozens of unauthorized “czars”, supported massive amounts of crony capitalism (Jeff Immelt as “Jobs czar” is only one example of both), illegal use of force in Libya, supported the “Arab Spring” (and look how well that is working out for us). I could go on a long time with examples, why are the things GW did OK when done by Obumma? At least I’m consistent in my condemnation of both and do not sip the kool-aid..

            I have a problem with the drone strikes, not necessarily in concept as I think they’re superior to invasions, but when their numbers increase, the potential is there for abuse. I would like to see a real effort to rein them in and to set up a mechanism to insure they are used only when absolutely necessary.

            I think the “czar” stuff is silly. Czar is a newspaper title given to someone with authority in a particular area. Jeffrey Immelt as a crony capitalist? He may be one, but he was already quite wealthy when appointed by Obama. Who would you have advise Obama on job creation – an unemployed person? I’m not totally comfortable with Obama’s coziness with big business, but since he’s been accused of being Lenin, I don’t think the coziness will ever go beyond second base. If you’re afraid of crony capitalism, I don’t see how you could ever vote for a Republican as they are not cozy with Wall Street and big business; they’re totally bought and paid for.

            The bottom line is the Democrats are far less beholden (although still too much for my taste) to big business than are the Republicans. If big business is running the government, then the government is superfluous.

        I attended a lot of wrestling matches in my days in the schools and know what you mean. Yes, there are many similarities, and a good wrestler makes a good Marine. And a good wrestling coach is akin to a Drill Instructor (if not quite so God-like).

        This Marine played football—line-backing was smash-mouth fun and you got a break between plays in football. The thing that really amazed me about wrestling was how they could do it with such intensity for so long—wore me out just watching.

        A little story for you about a wrestler and his coach. Back in the mid-80′s a wrestler was brought to my office for getting in a fight in the cafeteria the day before the team was going off to states. He was a great wrestler, a senior who had won his weight class at states as a junior and was expected to do so again. The team had other good wrestlers and had a good shot at the state team title. Fighting was a five-day suspension level offense. Didn’t even call his parents, instead I called the wrestling coach down to sit in with me and the kid. He nearly had a heart attack when he heard why I had asked him to join us and that the kid was going to be suspended. The kid’s excuse? He was “tense” because of states, and when somebody gave him a hard time about some little thing, he let it out and belted him. The coach nearly cried at that. So, I said to the kid, “You are a XXXX who has let down the team, your coach, your parents, and the whole school, to say nothing of yourself—you worked this hard for this long and you’ve blown it for yourself and everyone else”. At which his lip quivered mightily, his eyes got moist, and he looked at the floor. I then said, “Well guess what, just because you’re an XXXX doesn’t mean I’m going to let you get away with screwing it up for everyone else. Your 5-days off will begin on the day the team returns to school. You will go to states and redeem yourself by winning.” I then told the coach to explain it all to the kid’s parents, that I would send them an official letter, and that they could call if they had any questions—-the look on the coach’s face when he heard all that is one of my fondest memories from my 20+ years in school administration. I then told him to get the kid out of my sight and keep him with him for the rest of the day. They did go off to states and did win big—the kid won his class and the team took the state title. I don’t know if my “involvement” helped motivate the kid—he was so good he likely would have won anyway, but it sure didn’t hurt. It must have given the coach and the kid’s parents a lot to work with anyway. The only kicker came at the readmittance conference with him and his parents. I congratulated him on his win and asked him if he “enjoyed” his five day “vacation”. He said “Yeah, but I missed the Pep Rally” with a pouty look on his face. We had a welcome back pep rally for our state champ team. His father looked like he was going to smack him and jumped his case, saying he had a lot of nerve whining, reminding him that he had not yet thanked me etc etc, I just sat there and let Dad say it all—kids are kids until they grow up and I dealt with thousands—this one obviously still had a way to go. I DO think the whole thing had a Semper Fi side to it, though. That’s the moral.

        I will check out those sites. Do you look at Political Irony? Excellent site—lots of good editorial cartoons, Jon Stewart clips, and synopses and links to intelligent articles. I check it every morning.

        I would disagree that the right is “smart”, however. They’re maybe not dumb, but if they were truly smart, they’d have beaten O’Bama. Let’s hope they never catch on.

        I cannot count the number of times I’ve said exactly that—probably approaches triple digits.

        Was away for a family get-together. Really enjoyed the wrestling story. That you acknowledged and rewarded the hard work, but called the kid out on the underlying petty [expletive deleted] that undermined his character was a life lesson I’ll bet he’ll look back on frequently as he ages. As a mentor of young men, you hope that your input becomes a defining moment for them. It doesn’t always sink in right away. You hope that eventually, they “get it.” A lot of dealing with youngsters boils down to a “readiness” thing, where seeds planted don’t always sprout right away, but the seeds are there, and in time, help shape them when the piece to the puzzle come together for them. Totally enjoyed and agree with your intuitive perspectives and observations on things, Right Brain.

      Yes, we all know about blacks enslaving blacks. Actually they were just being good “free enterprisers” and greedily accumulating wealth at the expense of others as they made a buck selling fellow blacks to the white slave traders. (There are many on this site that would applaud them for upholding the principles of the free market). And the slave traders made a buck selling the slaves to the plutocrats who owned the cotton farms. And the plutocrats who owned the cotton farms made HUGE bucks off the backs of the slaves. And those plutocrats also brought the country into civil war. And the plutocracy of today would take the country back to a more benign form of slavery—corporate feudalism. Maybe we will have yet another civil war over that.

      Is that the point you were trying to make?

            I find that people often attempt to justify or minimize the impact of slavery by pointing to the Bible or to Africa or other traditional societies. It is true that after a war, it was common for one tribe to become the slaves of another for some period of time. What made slavery in the Western World (and we’re concerned primarily with the U.S.) particularly insidious was that it was justified by the myth of African inferiority.       We all saw your 0h-So-Clever LinCON the first time, Jay. although I do understand that you had to wag your tail and put it in a second time (in CAPS) because you are such a clever person and want us all to be sure to see that (or was it because many on this site don’t understand subtlety and need to be bludgeoned in order to understand? Like you, for instance?).

      Nice cherry-picking on the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which, as you may not know, went on for many hours and can provide much fodder for many arguments. If you read them more closely, rather than cherry-pick, you will find that LinCON was indeed playing the game that all politicians play—doing some pandering. Read a transcript of the debate that includes the parenthetical notes for (laughter) and (applause) and you may understand that better. That LinCON was playing to the local crowd in a campaign for a Senate seat and was mocking Douglas in places.

      Try to understand too that LinCON’s era was a far different time, one that is almost unimaginable to us modern folk. Go see the movie—-it is perhaps more about the country as shown through the behaviors of the members of the House as it is about LinCON. LinCON may really have had some ideas about race that seem “unprogressive” today, but he was way ahead of his time back then, and certainly so by the time he was elected president, then signed the Emancipation Proclamation, and then pushed for the 13th. Amendment. Did you not notice the last line of what you quoted?—”I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied every thing”. Perhaps it was too subtly stated for you?

      So, we have erected a beautiful Memorial to LinCON in a position of honor on the national mall, as prominent as that of Washington, the father of the country (along with monuments to Jefferson, FDR, and MARTIN LUTHER KING off to the side). I visit them all often. Lincoln’s is particularly meaningful.

      I see no monuments to people like you Jay, or to he-who-is-ignored. Unless the Blue Plains Sewage Treatment Plant that empties into the Potomac is your monument?. They can make it so by installing a plaque stating “In recognition of the inanities that flow out of the dark recesses and rotten sputtering gutters of WTS(Jay)’s brain like a river of septic putrescence” (and again, Thank you, Brandon)

      I disagree with your assessment of the situation. It could easily be said that an overwhelming number of GOP supporters are, likewise, “misinformed” because of the sheer number of whoppers being circulated by the propaganda machine on the right; the Limbaughs, O’Reilleys, Hannity’s, Heritage Foundation, Americans for Prosperity, etc.

      We commoners were minding our business as long as we had jobs with a decent pay and could pump available disposable income back into the economy, boosting retail sales to gigantic proportions. Then the rug was pulled out from under us when jobs were shipped to the four winds, kicking us to the curb for a higher profit margin for the top, and we began to look around at what was happening.

      During the BOOM years of the Eisenhower and Kennedy era, marginal tax rates were set at 90% to prevent the massive accumulation of wealth at the top like today, and prohibit the gigantic wage disparirty that has taken place over the past 30 years. Winner takes all, every man for himself, paying taxes is for chumps, dog eat dog.

      Maybe you think that there’s something wrong with a USA that promoted all of its citizens’ prosperity, like the America I grew up in. Things have changed, not for the better, and the changes have been perpetrated by the right in favor of the top because, in my view, that’s who they take their marching orders from. Example: During the past 30 years real output in the business sector grew by 140%. Real compensation per hour (includes wages, benefits, pensions, and health insurance) increased by only 38% for the middle class worker. The lion’s share went to the top, and never trickled down.

      Post WWII, 1947-1979 America shared equally in the increase in output. During those years the increase that the bottom 20% received was 116%, the top 20% got an increase of 99%, and the middle quintiles increased somewhere within that range.

      Then the world flipped! From 1980 to 2007 the rich took practically all the increase in income. Over those decades, the poor received only a 15% increase and the middle three quintiles got a 25% increase, while the top 20% got an income increase of 95% and the top 1% took in a 261% increase.

      We commoners didn’t realize that Class Warfare had been declared, so for 30 years, we didn’t even know to show up… But we’re here now!

        Exactly. The demise of the middle class in favor of the very wealthy may have begun before the early 80s, but it really took off starting then. Before that, the wealthy did very well, CEOs earning maybe 30 times what a regular worker made. Now, it’s probably 300 to one. You can’t tell me this is due to the market alone. Political decisions were made to create this “new world order” where only super-capitalists survive. I don’t expect we can have exactly the same economy as in the 50s and 60s when a blue collar, union worker could comfortably support a family of four, take vacations, and send his kids to college. We no longer have more than half the world’s manufacturing capacity the way we did post-WWII.

        Globalization may be a “natural” economic process, but that doesn’t mean we have to help it along politically, greasing the skids for our own manufacturing economy. The longer we can hold off such “inevitable” trends, the more time we have to develop new industries to occupy the old factories. And the more we cut taxes at the top and decrease services to the middle (Look at college tuition), the more we promote class warfare from the top. But to the right, that’s just business.

        Agreed; you say it well. I would add; that even in Europe, where nations are on the verge of default, there is one that has fared better than others.

        Consider Germany, a nation with its economic house in relative order. They impose a 19% tariff on imports (with the exception of some ag and raw materials) to protect their industrial base from being offshored by their Corporate heavy hitters, and keep their largely union workforce wages high so they have ample disposable income to pump into their economy. Plus they level a VAT (value assessed tax), a graduated tax on imports depending how much was manufactured/assembled outside Germany, and how much inside. You won’t see the Germans’ ruling class striking a deal with their Plutocrats to screw over their middle class workers.

        Plus, I was listening to a capitalist on a PBS station riling against China for their trade practices and the way they hack into our patents as soon as they are put online. Before our entreprerneures can procure the investments to put their idea to production, the Chinese have stolen the idea, dedicated a task force to the job of setting up production, and have it shipped to our shores at a fraction of the cost before we get the idea to production…

        Getting serios about protecting our national interest may sound the alarm of protectionism for some, but Germany does it without so much as a slap on the wrist, and it would seem to be better that bleeding this slow death that another decade of this trend will surely bring to pass.

        We’ve got to get the plutocrats to realoze that they have an interest in preserving the advantages a USA address provides, and press them to chip in, even if it means they’ll have to take a small hit on their profit margin…

    Chris, You black folks who keep screaming racism and slavery need to get over it. We are all in this thing together, and slavery was abolished , and now we need to join forces to save our collective freedoms and embrace the Constitution in the spirit in which it was written. I hate slavery- it is disgusting. I may have some distant ancestors who owned slaves-I dont really know-but I was not there-neither were you-and I do not feel guilty.And the Constitution now covers you and other American minorities(and seemingly even non-Americans as well).It, if followed, gives us all freedom and rights not found in many places.
    We gave civil rights to African-Americans-all too late probably-and all anyone seems to do is cry racist at anything any conservative group says.
    I grew up in the deep south-I was around when integration took hold. I has no problems with it, and many of the black kids became my friends-and so it is today. Being a musician,I have worked with many black players and singers, as wll as folks from a lot of different religions.The music seems to transcend all those differences.
    I feel the mistake that was made, is when the slaves were freed, the country did not incorporate and educate them as equal citizens.
    But for arguments sake, Chris, let us say the situation were reversed and white folks were in the minority. Do you think it would be any different? In the world you see in the future with the aforementioned in place, I can see us “whities” being ostracized instead of being given an equal place in society. The Constitution gives us all that place, whether it works or not perfectly-nothing goes just as set out, because of human nature and certain psychopaths which have come to power. (Thats the rub for me-we and the states are supposed to have most of the power-not them).But the idea and the dream is still there if we choose it.
    It could be argued that no one who is not a minority can understand. That may be-but we can try-and empathize!But to tear down the law that made us a great people, and a prosperous one-with help from great resources and some would say a diety, and condem all white folks because of a disgusting and sad human tragedy-a mar on our history(remember it is our history, too), throw away a great document just because you are pissed about slavery miss the boat, and is very sad, as well as being non-constructive.
    Walking around with a chip on your shoulder will not help.I have my own chips about thing sas well-and they dont help-and are just burdens. I need to get over them and move on, too.
    But if you are concerned about slavery(and we are all under an economic one) just wait a few years-you will see a slavery you will not believe-and all of us little folk will be on the whipping end-trust me it will happen if we all do not open our eyes
    Those states talking about sucession are doing so because of the wandering away from our laws. If they do they will probably adopt a similar set of laws and follow them. Which ever ones do, I am moving to one of them. Sincerely, DC.

What would you think of someone, despite all the evidence to the contrary, denying the Slave Trade ever happened and arguing that “Negroes” volunteered to work as slaves because they knew they needed to be taken care of by white people.     Very insightful Mr. Smith and you look so young! How is it possible that you could see things that most older people can’t? Anyway, I agree with everything you said. I have relatives like you described and I know other people like this too. Although I would add that I think that about 1/3 of our American population is like those thugs, another 1/3 are indifference(more like lazy, mediocre, and selfish/don’t care about anything), then there is the last 1/3 who cares for the truth, humanity, and have self-respect. Those 1/3 are trying to take our country back.

    If the present regime attempts to go after individual’s IRAs, that could be straw to break the camel’s back. Starting January 20. 2013, things could get real dicey real quick (more so than the last four years). The justification for the second amendment. Your essay is excellent.

      Unfortunately, I’m cynic enough to believe that the 2/3 described above would happily look at the confiscation of more private wealth (IRA’s etc.) and simply say “Cool, more free stuff for me, screw those rich people”.

Other than something on a right wing blog, what evidence do you have that Obama is coming for your 401-K? It’s like the nonsense about guns. Totally made up and spread amongst the ignorant for political purposes. Guess what? It’s not working.

    Another small item that the “slavery is white man’s racism’ folk deny is that the tribes in Africa sold their slaves to the white slavers on the ships – these folks were taken as slaves long before they ever saw a white man. Still another item that they deny is that, in America, many blacks owned slaves – and most whites did not. One black man in particular, William Ellison, between 1822 and the mid-1840s, gradually built a small empire, acquiring slaves in increasing numbers. He became one of South Carolina’s major cotton gin manufacturers, selling his machines as far away as Mississippi. From February 1817 until the War Between the States commenced, his business advertisements appeared regularly in newspapers across the state. These included the Camden Gazette, the Sumter Southern Whig and the Black River Watchman.

    Ellison was so successful, due to his utilization of cheap slave labor, that many white competitors went out of business. Such situations discredit impressions that whites dealt only with other whites. Where money was involved, it was apparent that neither Ellison’s race or former status were considerations. But of course the racially-motivated deniers don’t want to believe it, so therefore these facts do not exist for them.

    Since both sides of my family came over from Ireland long after the Civil War, none of us ever owned slaves, and I feel no “racial guilt” for any such acts, nor do I feel the need to pay reparations or any other sort of remuneration for the historic (and woefully, purposefully misinformed) descendants of “slaves”. The black entitlement attitude of “You Owe Me!” simply doesn’t register on my Richter scale. The only people I owe are those with whom I have willingly entered into contractual debt agreements.

      Abraham had an Egptian slave. Later his descendants had Egyptian masters.
      Throughout History slaves and slaveowners have come in all colors.

    There seem to be two basic myths about Africa permiating this website-and to a certain extent our society as a whole:
    Myth A.Childlike Africans being inherently inferior were “Natural slaves”,
    Myth B.The “Noble Savages” of “Mother Africa” were true children of Nature who lived in idylic equality in their tropical paradise before the serpentlike Whites slithered in and turned it into Hell on Earth by introducing slavery and colonialism-unheard of inovations.
    Fact:Africa like Europe had its’ class system of kings and slaves-and some of the slaves were European captives. Certain African Kingdoms eg Mooraco colonised Europe for more than half a millenium.
    Replacing one myth with another will not end inequality.
    Only the Truth can set us free.
