Spices Reduce Triglyceride Response

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Adding spices to a high-fat meal reduces triglyceride response by about 30 percent, compared to a similar meal with no added spices, U.S. researchers say.

Study leader Sheila West of Pennsylvania State University, says eating a diet rich in spices, such as turmeric and cinnamon, reduces the body’s negative responses to eating high-fat meals.

“Normally, when you eat a high-fat meal, you end up with high levels of triglycerides, a type of fat, in your blood,” West says in a statement. “If this happens too frequently, or if triglyceride levels are raised too much, your risk of heart disease is increased. We found that adding spices to a high-fat meal reduced triglyceride response by about 30 percent, compared to a similar meal with no spices added.”

West and colleagues prepared meals on two separate days for six men ages 30-65 who were overweight but otherwise healthy.

The researchers added two tablespoons of culinary spices — rosemary, oregano, cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, cloves, garlic powder and paprika — to each serving of the test meal, which consisted of chicken curry, Italian herb bread and a cinnamon biscuit. The control meal was identical, except it used no spices.

The findings, published in the Journal of Nutrition, indicate for those who ate the meal that contained a blend of antioxidant spices, antioxidant activity in the blood was increased by 13 percent and insulin response decreased by about 20 percent.

    Actually you added the spices to a HIGH CARBOHYDRATE meal. This upside down logic is common in a deluded nutritional world. Carbs are the problem. If you actually did research instead of promoting a belief system you’d know that carbohydrates at the current level promoted are the problem for everyone who is overweight.

    Cut out the carbs and triglycerides drop also. So spices reduce the carbohydrate affect in one area. I doubt they slow the rate at which carbohydrates are converted to fat.

    My diet is full of cinnamon, tumeric, garlic and ginger as well as other spices to make my meals and my digestion a comfortable experience and delight my taste buds…life is short, so try and enjoy as much of it as you can..

    Hurray!! My parents were right on teaching us about good health by using spices. All those mentioned above were part of our diet. fresh vegetables, fruits and nuts were always available.

    i am proud to say that I am very healthy and at my,”seasoned”, age I haven’t had to buy any prescription medications.

    I made up my mind that I would always maintain good health when I was 16 years old by following a good natural diet, exercise, maintain a normal weight because I never wanted to be overweight I now weigh only three more pounds than when I was in high school, which was 116.

    How did I do it? Keep active, don’t over eat,enjoy fruits and vegetables, be optimistic during difficult times, confess your sins to our loving,Jesus Christ,our Redeemer, He is the best Psychologist. The book of Psalms is very comforting to me. Avoid smoking and excessive drinking. And drink lots of water and include your daily vitamins as you get older.

    When you say insulin response dropped by 20% does this mean the glucose level did not lower as much as normal in response to the insulin present?
