Some Preppers Will Make Surviving The Apocalypse Even Less Fun

Some Preppers Will Make Surviving The Apocalypse Even Less Fun

Being forced to endure and survive a catastrophic macro event like a monetary or social collapse is perhaps one of the worst experiences I could imagine. Such a crisis leads to just about every crime and inhuman action in existence, and the time required for a culture to right itself and rebuild is severely protracted. A hurricane, earthquake or tidal wave is a short-lived calamity that is easy in comparison. As survivalists who are preparing to make an economic endgame scenario as comfortable to live through as we can, it is incumbent upon us to consider the kind of company we keep during the gambit. Some allies will make that mad world bearable; others will bring the madness to your doorstep.

Many preppers are aware of the dangers inherent in our progressively deteriorating Nation. Unfortunately, some of them are completely unaware of the dangers inherent within themselves. Building a solid community of people to rely on during a collapse is absolutely essential, and the larger the group of liberty-minded neighbors the better. But if certain ground rules are not established from the very beginning, a rainbow of personal issues and character flaws could very well destroy years of effort. Care must be taken by all parties involved to ensure that internal conflicts remain at a minimum and that, when they do arise, each person is wise enough to resolve issues in an adult manner.

I hate to say it, but you will inevitably run into some folks who are beyond compromise and beyond hope. Working with them is like pulling teeth — shark’s teeth — from your jugular. Here are just a handful of powder-keg personalities who will make the apocalypse more than a living hell for you and your friends if they manage to latch onto or take leadership in your survival watch.

The Assumed Leader

The assumed leader is not actually a reliable or practical leader; he just thinks he is. And he loudly reminds everyone that he is whenever he can find occasion. He does not generally do this by screaming, “I am your leader!” Instead, he attempts to micromanage every aspect of the survival group and shows early signs of control issues. The assumed leader will first make forceful suggestions to test the waters, scoffing angrily whenever people do not strictly follow his advice. If he gains traction, his suggestions turn into orders, and he begins to act as though he is somehow in a superior position to the rest of the community.

He seems to have an answer to every question or concern, which would be nice if he actually knew what he was talking about half of the time. Usually, this is not the case. He may have expertise in a certain field, like farming, building, engineering or even defense; that expertise is indeed valuable. However, his mastery of one area of knowledge has inflated his ego to massive proportions and he now pretends as if he is some kind of hyper-educated elitist potentate. When approached with alternative options and methods, he will respond with ridicule as if you have no clue what you are talking about. When his ideas are criticized, he will react with fury and try to remove dissenters from the community entirely.

The best way to avoid these people is to discover them early in your prepping project, and to make certain that no one becomes a de facto dictator. Every person with particular expertise within the community should be deferred to in that particular field, but not given authority over all decisions. The experienced farmer should lead when it comes to farming, but step aside when it comes to defense and vice versa. Keep in mind that the best leaders always ask those around them for aid and advice before coming to any conclusion. The worst leaders assume they already know everything.

The Feudal Lord

The feudal lord is an assumed leader who has managed to lure other preppers into a commune rather than a community, and there is a considerable difference. He is often a well-off survivalist who has suddenly realized that he is basically defenseless to protect all his money, land and supplies and that he needs an organized group to protect his bounty. He entices other preppers into the fold with ideas that he is building a legitimate and fair community. Since he has land available, many take interest. The problem is that the feudal lord believes that since he owns the land the group is defending, he’s automatically the grand poobah. He sees the other preppers not as equals, but as servants and serfs.

The reality is, the feudal lord’s land and supplies are utterly meaningless without security and without aid. His survival riches can be taken in an instant by a mere handful of looters or even one experienced raider. Without other people, treated as equals in survival and ready to lay down their lives to protect each other and him, he has nothing. He is foolhardy to think otherwise.

This is not to say that all landowners who try to centralize a group on their property are seeking to become mini-kings of a mini-kingdom. If rules and agreements are made early on and everyone understands their role, then such an arrangement could work. But if the landowner purposely avoids set agreements, appoints roles to people without asking them and changes the plan regularly to suit himself, then it’s time to walk away before it’s too late. Eventually, he will use his position as landowner as a means to dominate and will threaten to cast out people who disagree with his methods.

The best way to avoid these characters and the commune situation altogether is to not centralize on a single piece of land, but to organize in a neighborhood fashion wherein everyone maintains sovereign control of what they do and all aid is voluntary.

The Moral Relativist

There is, sadly, a small subsection of survivalists out there who do not plan to live off their own preps; they plan to confiscate the preps of others by force and solve every problem at the barrel of a gun. In their mind, a crisis situation calls for the abandonment of conscience and the application of a “survival of the fittest” mentality. They believe that morals are all well and good when civilized society remains, but a source of weakness during catastrophe. Their philosophy is: Only the strongest of men will be able to set aside principle and “do what needs to be done.” That is to say, they believe you must become the monster to defeat the monster.

In fact, only men who are able to hold onto their principles during the worst moments are strong. Weak men run away from conscience, using the excuse that times are “different and difficult.” They are not survivalists; they are terrorists in every sense.

These people should be avoided like the plague. They will make enemies wherever they go, ask you to do questionable things and push your community into annihilation. Eventually, somebody is going to put them out of their misery, and it’s best to not be around when that happens.

The Obsessive

The obsessive is a person whose drive is initially impressive but also ultimately destructive. His entire life revolves around survival prepping and impending doom. Certainly, it is better to be overly concerned about the economic crisis on the horizon than to be utterly oblivious. A smart man over-prepares. But there is such a thing as overkill, even in the world of survivalism.

No one can ever do enough fast enough in this person’s eyes. He will whine constantly about how he is the only one taking preparations seriously and how everyone else is a lazy bum. He will become frantic on a daily basis, admonishing the group or community on their lack of urgency. In a leadership position, this person is a nightmare, creating constant waves of tension and panic instead of calmly offering solutions or constructive criticism.

The obsessive’s motto is, “Let me tell you how you are wrong and why you are lazy,” instead of, “Tell me how I can help you fix this.”

We all need a break once in a while from the horrors we know are waiting for us. To step back and enjoy what we can of a beautiful day or good people is not the same as being a freeloader or a backslider within your prepper group. Survival is about more than sustaining the body; it is also about sustaining the heart and the mind. Otherwise, what is the point of living?

The Ulterior Motive Drama Queen

The drama queen is loosely interested in survivalism but wants to join your community for other reasons — and these reasons may cause many members dismay. The opposite of the obsessive, you’ll notice a strange non-involvement on his part or lack of interest as far as participating in survival discussion and decision making. He will often hand over all his survival preparation plans to others while hovering like a gnat around the community searching for that special something.

The drama queen may be looking for friends and social recognition. He may be afraid of collapse and simply trying to lock into any group regardless of whether he fits, becoming disenchanted later. He may enjoy the excitement of feeling like he is involved, and he is living vicariously through the accomplishments of others. He may just be looking for a date. Ultimately, his primary objective is not to build a working community, but to get something out of the community beyond safety.

If he does not get what he wants, he raises hell, using whatever excuse happens to be handy without ever admitting his real motivations. He will deliberately start unnecessary drama, attempt to create divisions, focus on one person as the cause of all his troubles or blame the whole group for the heartache in his life. He will attempt to draw everyone into his personal soap opera in the hopes of becoming the focal point, sharing strange and extremely private issues with anyone who accidentally offers to listen.

Eventually, he will be seen for what he is and will lose the ear of the other preppers, who obviously have better things to worry about, but only after wreaking some havoc in the process.

The Zealot

The zealot has a perfect picture in his mind of how his survival community is going to look — absolutely perfect. The problem is that all people are imperfect and all have different conceptions of life, and this disturbs and disrupts the zealot’s fantasy. It is one thing to be careful about whom you associate with when assembling a prepper organization, but it is entirely another to hold everyone to insane standards that even you cannot meet.

The zealot generally wants to be in charge so that he can vet and control each member of the group, but this is not always the case. Zealots are also sometimes highly antisocial, showing interest in a group for a short time and then suddenly walking away as if no one is up to par. He may base his zealotry on a misplaced religious fervor or philosophical inflexibility, but he will not be happy until everyone sees the world the way he does or until others meet his grandiose brand of moral flawlessness. For him, it is not enough that the community of preppers around him shares a love for liberty and a disdain for tyranny, the preppers must also be “spiritually pure” in his eyes.

One mistake or disagreement by a member of the group earns him a black mark on the zealot’s list which he never forgets. From then on, that member is the enemy, and the zealot will engineer conflict after conflict until the person gives up and goes away or until he can convince the group that the person is more trouble than he is worth.

The great dilemma for any survivalist is to balance personal freedom and a peaceful home life with the reality he will not last long without relying on a group. Other people bring talent, friendship and safety to our lives, but they also bring baggage. The key is to work with those who know how to manage as much of their own baggage as possible, who are aware of themselves and are willing to police their own quirks and who have not leapt off a cliff into extreme disturbia. No survival community can withstand the savage assault of national collapse otherwise.

Good article it makes me think of a story “Bendigo Shaftner” (sp?) by Louis L’Amour

    • GALT

Is that what makes it good……?

    • CJ

I believe ‘Catch 22′ is more applicable. Most who are preparing are exactly these types, but if they ARE in your group, who’s gonna step up and ‘out’ them?? Are they guilty of some of the same qualities they are trying to remove? Like I’ve commented about the 2nd Amendment, it’s there to protect us from an oppressive government, but who’s gonna be the first to step up and take the point as an ‘enforcing officer’? Tread very carefully!!

      • steve

you have not address trhe big issue , greed , that will always take control

      • CJ

Steve, I address the BIGGER issue… cowardice. They will bark ‘somebody ought to do something’ but are unwilling to step up themselves. It’s how a few will hold the masses hostage.

      • DaveH

Mr. Smith is offering us a personality study is some effort to be forewarned about the nature of men and women when they are comforted with demanding times as they attempt organize as a unit in hopes of increasing their odds of survival where there is no existing recognized power structure by the unit.

The desire to unite and offer a unified front is strong for obvious reasons yet the process of recognizing and accepting who will and has the ability to accept the leadership role is not, while it should be ~ but fear and ego interferes with this process.

Myself, I’d rather be alone then be a part of some self destructing power struggle in a group of meatheads as my world is trying to fall apart all around me.
You need to know something about these people and their personality and what they can bring to the table before the $hit hits the fan. Without the knowledge forehand, you can be assured of wasting time and resources.

If we was to pick a leadership role from the people here on this forum for example, people that we have learned to know just a little bit about, who would you select for key leadership position?

I have some ideals who I would select and why.

Let’s play a game. ~ Civil unrest is rampant though out the nation as far as we know, we are off grid, no power ,looting. killing, rape, pillage and plunder has became common place. Communication with the outside is nonexistent. ~ Fresh water supply is getting dangerously low, friend or foe is no longer clear and we are 13 souls trapped in a city of 175, 000 people.

Which posters here in these forums would you elect for the three key leadership roles?

      and why?

You tell us yours and I’ll tell you mine.

I will offer you my second in command, ~ just to get thing started ~ it would be 45.

      • Deerinwater

No one willing to jump out and say something? ~ My choice for Command leader would be Vicky. ~ ~ because ~ she sees what is missing, what is not there and has the ability to be objective. ~ Coupled with a strong right hand that has the respect of the others and knows how to implement policy makes for a strong leadership.

        Now for the Lieutenant ?

Myself, ~ I’m just an old pirate, ~ allow me to hand pick three men and give us a job to do. I do not run a democracy.

      • Marty S.

Old Henry and Kate 8 get my vote.

      • Mario

Did you bother to read carefully the part ” The assumed leader”?…
Well, anyway doesn’t matter. Actually what amazes me is how sheeple and illogic could be even the prepps. You just survived through a catastrophe, mainly triggered by a bad leadership, and now when you are finally free, what a Hell are you doing?!…LOOKING FOR ANOTHER IDIOT TO LEAD YOU?!!!!!…..Unbelievable!…

      • Deerinwater

It’s just a hypothetical exercise Mario, ~ don’t get your nose out of joint. ~ Clearly you are an Army of one. I would wish no less for you.

I suddenly realized after watching a few of those “prepper” shows on cable TV, what preppers really want to do is to kill a starving American. And, in their eyes, someone they consider “undesirable.”

Albert Einstein was famous for “thinking” about things and making connections that were only possible in the imagination. After going through a “prepper” phase myself, and after watching The Omega Man, I came to the conclusion that “prepping” has to be the STUPIDEST THING TO DO. Unless you want to do the basic things, like preparing for a storm or other short term disaster.

Everybody loves Camping for a few days, but the real joy comes in the return to “civilization.” When you come back and take a hot shower and sit in your air-conditioned home, you realize the value of our modern lives.

Let’ face it. Most of you so-called Preppers probably couldn’t go without a shower for just a few days, let alone a few months or years. Get off your “Rambo” fantasy and join in your community.

Just remember – there will ALWAYS be more humans than bullets.

    • Ranchman

And what happens to those like you after a few days when the power doesn’t come back on? Who will you turn to? With that kind of attitude, nobody would want you around them. We prep not only for ourselves but for others as well. It’s called “charity.” You should try it sometime.

      • CJ

‘Charity’ is for those who CAN’T do for themself, not those who REFUSE TO, especially when they are physically capable. There is a point of ‘deserving’ charity.

      • Nadzieja Batki

CJ, I always questioned as to who are those persons who can’t do for themselves. Even the most debilitated person can do something even if it is to pray or praise God. Even young children can to things even if you ask them to pick up sticks and bring them to you. I believe people had this perverse perception that people are these helpless victims that must be helped whether they need it or not.

      • 45caliber

When they started bringing Katrina people into Houston, they put them up at the Astrodome for temporary shelter. A lot of food and bedding was brought in. One doctor went to do what he could for those “poor” people who needed help.

He witnessed two elderly ladies trying to move a heavy mattress by themselves – while five young men from NO stood by talking. He walked over and asked the men if they could help the women. One of the men said, basically, “We lost all our stuff in NO. Now you want us to work??”

He said he’d never attempt to help people like that again.

      • Deerinwater

45 say “He said he’d never attempt to help people like that again.”

i say, ” Understandable” you and I both know 45, drawn into the throws of human struggle, we will witness such events that will turn your stomach and make your blood burn hot. This is “RAGE” , rage is a scary thing to “feel” . You and I have felt it, this doctor felt it. This feeling of wanting take people apart frighten good men and women.

    • TIME

      Dear KG,

      You bring up many very valid points indeed. But the first fact that everyone has to keep in mind is that when all this unfolds, { the “FUN” will stop.}

There is nothing FUN about basic survial, nor an advanced level, as in
{a total break down} of all of what you once knew. What you have to do is ask yourself is this the person I would trust with my life, my childs life, only “YOU” can answer that question. The last thing you need is a Jim Jones or John Holdren, Cass Sunstein mind set.

No one person has all the answers, learn how the Native American Indians worked out issues, ~ keep in mind that the Original Constitution was based on many of the methods used by these folks who lived in harmony with not only nature but with each other.

      {Yes, these folks also made war with each other, please don’t even go down that road, as I “stipulate” to that. }

The point is to work together for a “common good” ~ keep in mind that you will lose family & friends perhaps even your own mind.
To survive is a state of mind, not a state of living, the state of living is quite differant.

A “fair leader” will understand this thus they will have sub leaders who are also balanced in thinking about the welfare of everyone’s well being.
Will you have dead wood on your hands, {with out question } so you do need to learn how to “motiovate” them, note I did not say > “manipulate.”

Camping as KG noted is fun for a few days, so you really do have to think very LONG TREM, { as in the rest of your life.} What will be is what YOU will make of it.
None the less ~ You should be prepared for any event no matter what it may be or when it may come your way, afterall thats what life is a “Learning Curb.” How will YOU react?

      Peace and Love Merry Christmas.

      • Wumingren

I got a chuckle out of your statement saying life is a “Learning Curb.” Did you intend to say it that way instead of life is a “Learning Curve”? For some people it sure seems to be a curb, a curb that keeps them from learning much of anything at all.

      • TIME

        Dear W,

        You got it! ;-)

        Peace and Love Merry Christmas.

      • KG

What does Jim Jones have in common with John Holdren or Cass Sunstein?
How about Charles Manson? or even David Koresh? …or how about Applegate?

      • TIME

        Dear KG,

Ok so you have no clue, I understand that saddly most don’t ; but rather than even try and get out from the blind ~ you would rather try and deflect or obfuscate my post based soley on your lacking of intel.

So on that note. Jim Jones was a “Malthusian” as well as a narcissistic, self centered person of what by the way so to are, Cass Sunstien & John Holdren, of what all three are for sure not persons whom anyone would want leading them, yet we have two of them now writting laws for all of us to follow.

I hope this has been of some help to your learning “CURB” or would you rather have a curve? Its afterall your call.

We as a nation have failed to vet our leaders, and as this is what this blog is based on finding a leader when the grid fails ~ I felt it quite pertinent to add these persons names within the noted “NEED NOT APPLY” text for the job of a leader.

        Peace and Love Merry Christmas

      • Deerinwater

Time , I tend to believe that KG is just wishing to tone it down a notch, not that he has his head stuck in the sand.

Omega Man with C. Heston (aka Moses) and the remake with Will Smith were both inspiring. The Deadest Prey was a must see as well. Solent Green was an eye opener, ~ Blade Runner. The Matrix both monsters. ~

There was an old black and white movie that Robert Culp played in many years ago, ~ I attempted to locate the tile but to no avail. Mr. Culp was very prolific and left us with a huge body of work, there was just too much to go through. ~ But in this “Survival” of mankind movies ~ he played the part of a lone man attempting stay alive as the world was being destroyed by epidemic and social collapse. ~ It was not until end of the movie that it was made known, ~ that he had a artificial finger and in this finger the bulk of humanity was being stored to be regenerated after the mayhem and danger had passed.

A little tongue and cheek perhaps, ~ but a mind blower in 1957. ~ before mico-electronics and DNA. ~ but hey, ~ if you can get your mind around the notion that the brightest star in the east offering great news that a boy child was born unto a virgin it helps set the stage of probability.

We need to accept the fact that it “US” that is our worst enemy and just because you might prepare , work and study for such a collapse ~ most will not be prepared and they will have to be address. ~ Some, you might be able to make allies of, some will demand to be neutralized.

Power, concealment and containment are the things anyone that plans to survive must have at their command. These three items contains all the other things one must have, like food, water, air, space, defense to buy the TIME to live passed it.

      • America Rules

Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year to you and yours!

KG says — “what preppers really want to do is to kill a starving American”.
Ahh, you gotta love these Liberal Progressive mind-readers.

What Liberal Progressives want to do (apparently, as evidenced by their actions) is to Create a Starving American. Why else would they adopt an ideology (Socialism) that has been proven throughout history to result in poverty for the masses?

      • KG

Yea…I want “starving” Americans. I want citizens to have the right to collectively bargain for better wages, better working conditions and a better life. I want ALL citizens to be able to enjoy a piece of our collective prosperity that WE ALL have helped build.
I guess you would just keep everything to yourself and to he(( with everyone else. Oh, that’s right. In your Ayn Rand/ Von Misies world that’s what you have – a selfish, self centered “society” trying to escape the responsibilities that Citizens have for the society they live in.

“…you mean I gotta spend all night in this foxhole- with this dude?”
        Junior from Platoon

      • DaveH

Let’s simplify the obfuscation, KG. You want to Steal other peoples’ money.
And in your lust for other peoples’ money, you are willing to ignore the inevitable outcome — More Poverty, like the citizens suffer in the countries who practice your policies at the bottom of the list:

      • 45caliber

        Question, KG:

You stated that we have ALL helped build a prosperous place. Tell me, exactly what have those who are welfare, refusing to do any work at all, done to build? How about the drug dealers? What have they done to help build? I’d really like to know since, as far as I can see, they have done exactly nothing to help at all.

      • Old Henry

Well, to quote Little Barry Soetoro the communist foreign national Kenay – WE DIDN’T BUILD THAT….

        • Deerinwater

Who is served by taking words and phrases out of context? ~ We could easily apply this tactic to any and everyone.

          “Bring it on”

” It depends on what the meaning of “is” is”

I’m not speaking for anyone else, but I apologize. I do not want to live in a county where anytime a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong, [it is] subject to some sort of political pressure that, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown.”

—Rep. When something belongs to everybody, everybody expects somebody else to take care of that stuff. You and myself included. And, Hell why not?. Does belong to everybody, why should be ME the first who should spend my effort on it?… Let somebody else do it first!
If you don’t have a clue what I’m talking about, let me tip you: it’s socialism! And I saw it work in full speed in my chidhood in Eastern Europe.Believe me, is devastating…The thing to cheer up? It didn’t work, so it was abandonned. The sad thing? It took 70 years to collapse.

KG, are you kidding? “what preppers really want to do is to kill a starving American”? So, because you believe in thrill killing, you assume that all preppers do as well?
Some of us believe that our collapsing government won’t be there should our society collapse. We want to insure that our loved ones can survive until order is re-established. Many of us stockpile enough items so that we can help out our neighbors in time of need as well.
I don’t know of anybody who wants to kill another human being, but if a crazed criminal comes at me or my family, you’re damn straight I’ll protect myself or them….preferably without having to kill. Killing is always a last alternative.
It sounds like since you’ve envisioned this desire to kill, that it’s probably a good thing you are no longer a prepper.

    • Paul Wells

Sadly, KG will turn into the “Moral Relativist”, when he realizes the power isn’t coming back on, and he better get with the program. Avoid people like KG like the bubonic plague, when push comes to shove!

      • Nadzieja Batki

Unfortunately there will always be people like KG standing on the sidelines expecting people to do for them while they make no effort to work.I would say let them stand and work around them, they will get to work if they see that nobody takes false pity on them or they starve. When that happens bury them.

    • JC

      KG says:

      December 4, 2012 at 4:01 am

I suddenly realized after watching a few of those “prepper” shows on cable TV, what preppers really want to do is to kill a starving American. And, in their eyes, someone they consider “undesirable.”

As far as I’m concerned that statement is ignorant garbage.
Moral people don’t “want to kill”, but they will defend themselves, their families and their property from theives and murderers.

      • Deerinwater

Well, hmm? ~ Galt is most correct in asking the question ” What is Mr. Smith selling?”

My first year in English Comp, I had composed this drivel of a essay, some 6 pages long and when the Professor returned it to me all marked up with red ink, ~ at the top it read “Who are you writing to?” “Select your audience and write to them”

So like Galt is saying, ~ What is Mr. Smith selling, for as we both well know to whom he writes.

Mr. Smith writes to the easy to “offend one”, to people that have a hyper sensitivity to being a “victim” and will go to extended lengths to avoid it. This victims mentality exist in all of us to various degrees, while some of us “feed it”

People that would pay $2,500.00 for a state of the arts bicycle that weighs only 4 1/2 pounds and then carry around a 9 pound lock and chain to keep people for sealing it.

Let’s face it ~~ we are all funny.

        • Wumingren

Yes, “What are they selling?” is a good question to ask the Leftmedia, too.

I am reminded of a war movie I watched years ago. There was one short scene in which a slightly built, youngish Allied soldier fighting hand to hand, room by room, in a European town. He encountered a giant of an Aryan soldier, who easily manhandled the young soldier. The fight too quickly came to the point where the young soldier was desperately trying to keep the German’s blade from plunging into his chest. It was only a matter of time. The young man’s grip was waning, and the blade would was moments from doing the awful deed. The German soldier then said, “Stop fighting. Relax and accept it. Just let death come.” The camera had a close up of the imploring eyes, first of the young soldier, begging with his eyes to live, and then of the German, wishing the young soldier a quiet, easy death. A tear streaked down the young man’s face as his eyes finally closed.

What the Leftmedia is selling is a woeful tale, the struggle of a young patriot trying to keep his freedom in the face of an overwhelming force. It’s trying to convince me to stop fighting, to relax and accept it, and just let socialism come. It brings a tear to my eyes as well.

You seem smart enough to realize the ends of your dreams are gone.

Your dream of world dominance, in your own mind, is still alive and well.

You will be the first of many “Reverends” eliminated.

Your willful ignorance, your megalomaniac, narcissistic, sociopathic, afro—American ignorance will be your quick demise in a world where you never belonged!

You have been a victim your entire life, even though everything you own has been given to you.

You have no friends or family that cares for you because who needs friends and family?

You survive through hatred that has been piped into your shriveling veins by anti-God, anti-American, anti-human maggots of our society and follow all that is negative in the world.

You my poor fool are legion.

      • Deerinwater

This notion of “desire for world dominance” alludes me, I don’t believe that Galt or myself harbor such lofty ambitions while of course he might only speak for himself.

By nature it is Greed that can never be satisfied, never be filled ~ that seeks world domination. Men that corner markets like Rockefeller and PJ Morgan, do we label such men as liberal progressives or conservatives?

      • Deerinwater

To say someones dreams have been taken is a bit of a stretch. For death is the only thing that takes a man dreams. Why not let us keep the rubber on the road and speak of things we hold a grasp on and can speak about with some authority. even if it’s just one on personal opinion.

It’s not like most of us haven’t thought of this. Post shtf, things are going to be drastically different. Our original Constitution is a good place to start. I agree whole heartedly in live and let live, the golden rule, the ten commandments, religious tolerance, privacy, and sovereignty of ones property. Communities will have to band together on a local level for strength against the hordes of outsiders with no ties to the community. Local elections will be quite important for all the reasons and character traits you mentioned in your article. However, it is often concealed what is in a persons heart and mind until they are in a position of power. Also it probably be that Federal oversight will be absent for an extended period. The clock will be turned back quite a bit, 100 to 200 years might be a pretty good estimate, as to how things are handled on a local level. Banishment from th community or total shunning as is practiced in some religious groups may be neccessary for nonconformists to community laws and harmony. Serious law breakers will have to be dealt with on a local level, and will probably be harsher than some are willing to accept. It will be interesting times indeed. I don’t want to go down this road, but I fear it is what lays ahead for all of us. Good Luck to all and may God Bless you and yours.

At this point a wise family at least has 2 weeks extra food/water…more cash at home and a very serious weapon with 1,000 rounds…generators and other measures are the next level…sort of the “hurricane level”….to each his own…look at broke Greece, the takers riot when the freebies are cut way back…loot stores then go to private homes next…that seems obvious if nothing else does, especially if you live very near large cities…may sanity appear first so all this talk is not needed…but the arrogant apostles of utopian socialism are bent upon Cubanizing our nation.

Mr. Smith, Your Zealot is the modern day American conservative. My way or the highway! Everything else is progressive. Problem is that we have never had a true conservative as President and yet we “progressives” have created the number one nation on earth and we remain so. Therefore it is a concept not needed nor missed!

    • CJ

Somebody has to tell the liberals they’ve been irresponsible in their behavior, spending more than they have, mounting debt beyond the ability to repay. Attacking the responsible position after repeated ‘compromises’ have left us way left of ‘center’ only shows conceite. It’s past time the ‘grown-up’ decision is made and they have to put their foot down and hold the irresponsible ones accountable.

      • TIME

        Dear CJ,

nc, is a “progressive” ~ { not a Liberal } a TRUE Liberal enjoys freedom, {a Progressive } wants to bring us all back to the stone age, thus until the American people learn the differance we are all in a SH58 load of trouble.

        Look in to the Progressive leaders thinking, here are two who’s works are out there to explore; {John Holdren, the Science czar, ~ Cass Sunstine regulatory czar,}
After you all read what they think then you will understand what a Progressive really is they are really “Malthusian” thinking creatures.

      • CJ

Time, I stand corrected. You are correct, but I chose the generally (mis)used term over the proper one so those who are easily dissuaded might get the point. I often try to phrase so the unenlighted (try being key) might understand by (mis)speaking their words.

  • Jon

Good article. I consider myself a prepper in many ways but am concerned about many of the things you write about. Part of the problem is not knowing what kind of disaster scenario to prepare for. And we also have to prepare for no catastrophe. I’d feel pretty foolish putting my life savings into a bomb shelter, only to wake up on 22 December, finding that the Mayans miscalculated. God bless.

    • CJ

Myans didn’t miscalculate, it’s a physical event they are marking. The problem lies in the naive interpretation. It’s a cycle, and on Dec. 22 it starts all over again.

I’m not sure your point. I think the gist of the article is legal terms. What will govern your prepper community, men or laws? Laws govern and armed men enforce.

I vote we don’t blow ourselves up.

    • TIME

      Dear Rich,

I don’t think we need to blow ourselves, up Rich thats a tad extreem don’t you think.

We do need laws to have a platform to go forth from, the good news is that we have a strong set of laws given to us all by GOD.

Good men must have a strong Moral Compass so they can not only govern with Benevolence; but also be strong enough to fight for what is good within all of us, to make us all more than we appear to be, to elevate us to a higher level of being.

Peace and Love be with you, Merry Christmas

All your preparations will be for nothing unless you are willing to surrender th the will of God and follow his teachings the rule of law is based on the Bible and its 10 commandments 627 if you follow all the law in the Torah, but the 10 commandments formed the base of a stable government and the US constitution was a document that implemented the tennants of the commanments in government a government that recognized God as the creator and human rights are a gift from God and not the government. If you embrace your own morality, where do you draw the line between morality, immorality and amorality?

      • JC

I can use natural law as a guide line, with or without theology…I get the same results.

      • DaveH

I follow the moral rules passed down by generations which are consistent and make sense, including many in the Bible (which was written by men, not gods).

      • 45caliber

“Practicing morality does not require a belief in God.”

Perhaps, but it certainly helps. To be honest, morals are a set of behaviors established by someone (God or not) that you live by. To the American Indians, murdering a stranger was moral. To others, robbery and rape are moral. Muslims, for instance, rape girls who venture out without a male for “moral” reasons. I prefer those set by God since they fit more in what I believe should be done.

There will be no arguments only group decisions based on the generals opinion. I am the general lol I know engineering was my trade can build anything with my hands from your trash. I know everything that’s edible and poisonous here and how to prepair it. I have no electricity except what I produce here myself already. • Deerinwater

We need to do some seriously work on #9

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17 NKJV)

1 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.
2 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My Commandments.
3 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
4 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
5 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
        6 “You shall not murder.
7 “You shall not commit adultery.
        8 “You shall not steal.
9 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

    • Marty S.

The U.S Constitution was the moral compass for the country and I believe it was a divinely inspired document. The founders would be horrified if they came back from the past in a time machine into our present and saw with their own eyes what has happened to the country. It was this very tyranny they were trying to avoid.

Brandon: Some Preppers Will Make Surviving The Apocalypse Even Less Fun.

No doubt, as some sociopaths make surviving the present rather difficult, if not impossible. Will some of these sociopaths be present in the possible scenario you described?…you bet! But i think the one’s you’ll have to worry about are the one’s who’ll have engineered, as you say, “the Apocalypse”!

  • Rogue Elephant

    • RichE

LOL, who will be the migrant in your elite group?

  • By George

The survival thinking is now, apparently, underway. America died on Nov 6th, 2012, and they (The Progressives) will start picking us off one by one.

The psycho leadership types, the main subject of this article, is accurate enough for a group of like minded thinkers to consider when deciding to select a group leader.

There is another element, however, that does not fit into the leadership category, but that all groups must consider and that is, the implanted mid-schoolers and high schoolers who have already been brainwashed by government schools to become community snitches (spies) exactly in the fashion of Hitler Youth’s of long, long ago. Call them Obama-yutes (thanks Joe Peschi) or whatever. We see them now clinging to global warming theories and sticking their fingers in their ears while hollering “LaLaLaLaLa” so they don’t have to listen to reason. They’re out there folks and pose a clear and present danger to any organized attempt for self-defense. Just put it on you ‘good to know’ survival list.

    • Mikey

Very good George. And these types you mentioned are exactly the types that are bringing the demise of our society in the first place. We need to spot them before they can collapse any surviving communities.

    • JC

And if things get bad enough…they might comprise the street gangs you should be most wary of, with their built in sense of entitlement.

      • By George

JC, I take your point. We removed ourselves from the urban environment 15 years ago and now reside in a rural Georgia county. Except for a few indian natives from Mexico and Guatemala, we have no such problems as those that infect the inner-cities.

I was shocked, however, when I encountered this level of brainwashing from a caucasian boy scout directing traffic onto a parking area at a local fair. He is a product of our local schools and I reckoned that all the teachers here think like I do. I must be wrong. I live in the most conservative congressional district in the US, but apparently, not conservative enough, so we must be on our guard against fuzzy thinking encroachment of this sort. Thanks

      • 45caliber

And one reason these street gang members are so dangerous is because they feel “entitled” to everything you have. They have been told this since their birth by the government and many times their family and friends. And they aren’t afraid to take what you have as a result. After all, they are “entitled” to it and therefore you should have given it to them without their asking. Since you didn’t, you deserve to die.

There is a man in prison now in Texas for killing a school teacher for her car. His excuse? “I asked her for the keys and she wouldn’t give them to me so I had to kill her.” Unfortunately he was 17 at the time and the SCOTUS won’t let us execute him.

      • JC

Those are good examples of what I mean.
Civility will be lost in a general sense…more so in those who didn’t have any to begin with.

  • The Christian American

The bible prophecy’s the apocalypse times and what better prediction do we need. What would the doomsday preppers done with New Orleans, Sandy or all the other “natural” disasters? This world has a timetable that only God knows. Not being one to catch people by surprise, people do, God gives us passages like Matthew 23&24. Every human being has a day of reckoning before their Creator. That’s when all this will really matter because that’s when humans answers will matter. His decisions will determine his future for all of eternity. If people search the bible for answers, what some people call news will be yesterday’s news. They’ll know where the red lights are and the green lights are. The best doomsday preperation is reading and believing John 3:16 and other verses. These doomsday preppers cannot beat God’s timetable and by His timetable, Christ will be paying a visit to this earth real soon.

Good article, and as I was reading it, I was struck by how much Congressmen/women seem to fit “The Assumed Leader” role, and they will attempt to do the same in the context of post apocalyptic survivalism. This will of course fail, because in reality, they never were leaders of any sort to begin with. Bottom line is this, it will be tough when you discover for the most part, that you cannot trust anyone. This will be some tough sledding, but some will survive!

“The key is to work with those who know how to manage as much of their own baggage as possible, who are aware of themselves and are willing to police their own quirks and who have not leapt off a cliff into extreme disturbia. No survival community can withstand the savage assault of national collapse otherwise.”

    I would add:

Themore people that manage to prepare for a national collapse or other disaster, the more people the survival community can support, fewer die and the faster the disaster will end.

If you find one of your “survival” buddies is a Homosexual, or a Atheist, are you prepared to make an example and execute with a firing squad?

      • TIME

        Dear KG,

I don’t see anything within the text of FF post that implys nor reflects any form of Hate toward anyone.

Its only common sense to anyone who has lived near a massive body of water to be ready for what ever may occur. I have lived on the Alantic and the Pacific Oceans as well even the Gulf of Mexico, all have differant issues with weather, so you have preperations on hand to aid others who may not.

Just as we have in our car bottled water, medical supplys, flashlite’s, blankets, and even an extrat jacket and gloves ~ even dry food just in case the car breaks down somewhere and we don’t have cell phone signal.

On our sail boat I use to have a Shotgun a 45 Cal a really BIG knife, plus extra food and water, life jackets, and such when we went out for a trip. It’s just be aware of what can go wrong ~ thats also called being a PREPPER.
Now just apply it to everything in your life. We all have insurance policy on our homes, our cars and even our life, thats also being a PREPPER, having a retirement account fits the profile.

So would you like to now try and spin what I just posted in to some bent platform ~ that I hate someone for being ready for a problem that may arise?

look we all have to take responsibility for ourself, as well look out for others too. thats called being Human. Give it a try some time.

        Peace and Love Merry Christmas

      • momo

        another brilliant remark by KG—not.

      • JC

You have some very disturbing thinking going on there KG.
Maybe you should keep your personal problems to yourself.

      • 45caliber

Why would you WANT to set and example and form a firing squad to execute them? What has that got to do with survival?

      • Charlie

What does The King’s “Orders” say??? See John 8 for a perfect law case by King Jesus…

There is some talk here about defending yourself or being a murderer who wants to kill a “starving American”. Well, here are a few things for all of you to think about when push comes to shove.

    1. If someone comes to you and tells you he has no food and cannot get any, are you willing to share the food that you have saved back … even if it means that your own family may starve later if no food can be found?

    2. If you catch someone stealing and there is no authority who can lock such a person up, what are you going to do with him? Are you going to build a place to lock up such people and thereby feed and care for them as we do prisoners today?

    3. Would you free a person who commits a criminal act because you refuse to kill except to defend yourself? Are you going to be willing to be the responsible person if the person you release kills your best friend/spouse the next day?

    4. If someone comes to you and insists that he/she will defend you if you give them half of what you have, will you do it?

    5. If someone comes up to your home (whether house or tent) after a disaster and tells you that he is now the ruler/authority in your area and that you MUST immediately pack up and move to where he tells you to go, will you go?

If you can’t answer all these questions because you haven’t thought through the reasons, then you aren’t ready for any problems and probably won’t survive.

    • Charlie

The answer to all your questions are in The Bible… Is King Jesus your Commmander???

  • charles

And he knows all these personality types, HOW?

    • 45caliber

The same way you and I do. Why?

    • Nadzieja Batki

Because the personality types exist within family, churches, schools, military, police, government agencies, businesses, offices, etc., and any situation that has two or more people. I seriously doubt that you have not run into these types of people.

      • Charlie

What are the 4 basic personality types ?

        • tacmotusn

Charlie, did you not read the original article? The 4 types are quite clearly spelled out.

      • Charlie

I say again the 4 basic personality types ARE NOT titled ,,,but,,,since most don’t know,,,they are , Sanguine ,Phlegmatic ,Melancholy ,Choleric … Meanwhile………

Ever heard of “Spontaneous Order’? Its a libertarian term.

    • Nadzieja Batki

I would call this establishing the pecking order.

    • Bimbam

      What is spotaneous order?

That’s when somebody from the looney-Left shows up and says “I’m in charge here”!

      ***K Y** puke!!! LOL!

  • Bimbam

The article forgot the biggest threat of all – THE TRAITOR!!! There will always be one in EVERY group, known as the JUDAS.

Christ had one in his hand-picked group.

    • Deerinwater

Well, ~ it’s true any chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link, while Judas Iscariot was a willing and active player in history and served a vital purpose. I would not have wanted for such a task. Judas has gotten nothing but bad press ever since that faithful day.

The thing that must be address is to know your weakest link and learn to use it as Jesus did.

  • Deerinwater

My experience on selecting leadership, ~ it to pick the one that is quite, known to be capable and is refusing to take the job.

  • Deerinwater

And why , I believe that Criss Cristie will be the GOP’s future Presidential candidate. I would vote for him.

  • Tony

Very interesting. The responses are as good as the article itself, in terms of allowing one to gauge sentiment. For example, it’s pretty obvious that KG is lost in space or has bought into the socialist clap-trap without the faintest understanding of the implications of his/her beliefs in the real world. It’s always interesting when these “I want to distribute YOUR wealth” types, who credit themselves with “building” progress, although no one can seem to find or see their “contribution”, and who use the “we” word only in the context of “WE want a piece of YOUR pie”… just “because”, bray about things they do not understand. It is best to simply set them aside as an example of why our society is crumbling.
I think it all boils down to that last comment. The more people that REALLY prepare, the more people will survive an economic or physical calamity.

Very good blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring
writers? I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a
paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any tips? Thanks a lot!
