Slow Sales Slash Gaming Device Price

REDMOND, Wash., July 28 (UPI) — Nintendo officials said they are cutting the price of the handheld 3DS gaming device from $249.99 to $169.99 in the United States.

The move possibly indicates the company, of Kyoto, Japan, is disappointed with the device’s slow sales, CNN reported Thursday.

The 3DS’s price is scheduled to be slashed Aug. 12 in the United States, CNN said.

“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now. We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime in Redmond, Wash.

The gaming device hit the market in February in Japan and in March in the United States amid much hype about its glasses-free 3-D video display, CNN said.

But Nintendo has dealt with sales losses due to growing competition from the games available on smartphones and the tsunami that hit Japan in March, right after the device was released, CNN said.

Nintendo is 39 million units behind in projected sales for the fiscal year ending March 31 and has reduced financial projections for the year by 82 percent, CNN reported.

In an attempt to recoup sales, Nintendo will launch “Star Fox 64 3D” Sept. 9 and “Super Mario 3D Land,” “Mario Kart 7″ and “Kid Icarus Uprising” in time for the holiday season.
