Slain Aid Worker’s Money Goes To Afghans

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 6 (UPI) — The life savings of a Scottish woman killed in Afghanistan last year has been donated to a foundation created in her memory to help women and children there.

Linda Norgrove, 36, had saved 91,000 pounds ($150,000) while earning a doctorate and working on sustainable agriculture projects, The Scotsman reported. Her parents have included that money in a total donation of 100,000 pounds ($164,000) to the Linda Norgrove Foundation, a contribution matched by the Scottish government.

Norgrove was working in Kumar province for Development Alternatives Inc. when she was kidnapped in September 2010. She was killed during an attempt by U.S. special forces to free her, apparently hit by a grenade thrown by one of her would-be rescuers.

The foundation has spent money modestly on items like toys and furniture for a Kabul orphanage and bread ovens for a hostel for widows in Jalalabad.

Norgrove’s parents, John and Lorna, said they believe the foundation is doing what their daughter would have wished with her money.

“Linda always lived a very frugal lifestyle,” John Norgrove said. “She was the only student I ever came across who left university with money saved.”

Norgrove was from Lewis in the Western Isles. She did research in Uganda and went to Afghanistan in 2005, working there almost continuously until her death.
