Sheriffs For The Constitution

February 14, 2012 by

Sheriffs For The Constitution

Though there are increasing reports of law enforcement agencies acting in increasingly violent, militarized and evermore unConstitutional ways, many Americans hope that another trend is also emerging among some of the Nation’s law enforcement officers.

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association — sponsored by the John Birch Society, the Gun Owners of America and the Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, among others — aims to train sheriffs throughout the Nation to be protectors of the Constitution and their locales’ last hope against Federal tyranny.

Late last month, the organization hosted its inaugural convention in Las Vegas, with about 120 sheriffs in attendance. The conference was organized by former Graham County, Ariz., Sheriff Richard Mack, a Tea Party advocate who, along with six other sheriffs, challenged the Constitutionality of the gun-control measure commonly known as the Brady Bill that was introduced by the Clinton Administration in the 1990s. Mack’s challenge went all the way to the Supreme Court where it was deemed that local law enforcement could not be compelled to carry out Federally mandated background checks.

Materials on the Constitutional Sheriffs’ website states: “The sheriff’s position overrides any federal agents or even the arrogant FBI agents who attempt to assume jurisdiction in our cases.”

And some sheriffs throughout the Nation have spent their time standing up to Federal agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service; the Bureau of Land Management; the Internal Revenue Service; the FBI; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Environmental Protection Agency; and the Food and Drug Administration.

The Constitutional Sheriffs plan to meet again this summer.

Well, I am impressed. Finally…someone standing up to the BS that keeps getting thrown around. I sure hope MY sheriff is on their side, I am sure there are PLENTY in this country that are NOT. God Bless them and their struggle to ‘let freedom ring’!!! :)

The John Birch Society is an American political advocacy group that supports anti-communism, limited government, a Constitutional Republic and personal freedom. It has been described as radical right-wing. Founder Robert W. Welch Jr. (1899–1985) developed an elaborate organizational infrastructure in 1958 that enabled him to keep a very tight rein on the chapters. Originally based in Belmont, Massachusetts, it is now headquartered in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, with local chapters in all 50 states. The organization owns American Opinion Publishing, which publishes the journal The New American.

The society upholds an originalist interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, which it identifies with fundamentalist Christian principles, seeks to limit governmental powers, and opposes wealth redistribution, and economic interventionism. It not only opposes practices it terms collectivism, Totalitarianism, and communism, but socialism and fascism as well, which it asserts is infiltrating US governmental administration. In a 1983 edition of Crossfire, Congressman Larry McDonald (D-Georgia), then its newly appointed president, characterized the society as belonging to the Old Right rather than the New Right.
The society opposed aspects of the 1960s civil rights movement because it claimed the movement had communists in important positions. In the latter half of 1965, the JBS produced a flyer titled “What’s Wrong With Civil Rights?,” which was used as a newspaper advertisement. In the piece, one of the answers was: “For the civil rights movement in the United States, with all of its growing agitation and riots and bitterness, and insidious steps towards the appearance of a civil war, has not been infiltrated by the Communists, as you now frequently hear. It has been deliberately and almost wholly created by the Communists patiently building up to this present stage for more than forty years.” The society opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, claiming it violated the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and overstepped individual states’ rights to enact laws regarding civil rights. The society opposes “one world government”, and has an immigration reduction view on immigration reform. It opposes the United Nations, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and other free trade agreements. They argue the U.S. Constitution has been devalued to favor of political and economic globalization, and that such alleged trend is not accidental. It cites the existence of the Security and Prosperity Partnership as evidence of a push towards a North American Union. Stuart A. Wright has said that their political racism however was no different from both Republicans and Democratic politicians of the time.

It has been described as “ultraconservative”, “far right”, and “extremist”. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the society as a “‘Patriot’ Group”. Other sources consider the society as part of the patriot movement.

What a tremendous breakthrough for commonsense in the administration and execution of “law enforcement” to earn and gain the confidence and support from the people by whom they are paid and serve. The public profile of law enforcement has diminished over the decades for many reasons. Some of those reasons lay on the shoulders of law enforcement and their many supplemental units and supporters. How can you serve a community without being and feeling as an important component of that community. I was born into a family with many relatives in law enforcement and watched with amazement the widening chasm that evolved during the 1960′s. Fault on both sides of the badge was obvious. This is the most mature and logical attempt to narrow that gap. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

Remember Sheriff Richard Mack? Back in the 1990s, as an elected Sheriff of Graham County, Arizona, he took the Clinton administration to the Supreme Court over the Brady Bill. His case was not based on the Second Amendment, but on the Tenth Amendment. Why? His argument was that the federal government could not tell the highest elected official in the county what policy he was going to follow. It was unconstitutional. The outcome? He won.

Sheriff Mack has spent much of his time since then writing and speaking of his experience. He understands the proper role of the sheriff and knows that there are many good sheriffs and chiefs of police out there that could use some help. With this in mind, he has founded the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. Their mission is to educate and equip sheriffs, peace officers, and public officials with the necessary information and public support to carry out their duties in accordance with their Oath of Office.

This new organization has its first annual convention coming up next week in Las Vegas. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Larry Pratt, Sheriff Bradley Rogers, Richard Mack and JBS National Director of Field Activities Jim Fitzgerald will give presentations. The convention runs two days: January 30-31. Monday will see a day-long event only for law enforcement, while the Tuesday evening meeting will be a public rally.

If you’re in the Las Vegas area, plan to attend the Tuesday event, “Learn the proper role of the county sheriff… serving the people and protecting their rights,” at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino from 6:00 – 10:00 PM. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. JBS is one of the sponsors.

Jim Fitzgerald is a former police officer from Newark, New Jersey. He draws from personal experience of how important it is to support your local police and keep them independent. Jim will be showing a special video produced by JBS about the Society’s “Support Your Local Police — And Keep Them Independent!” campaign as well as special information that exposes the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Jay, thanks for your post on the John Birch Society you are so correct.

This is the first time that I have heard of The Constitutional Sheriffs And Peace Officer Association. Glad it is there.
The constitution is our bulwark of protection. The wise enforce it, and protect it.
In the Word of God it is written in Ecc 10:2 NIV- The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.
    Thanks for this article,Denis

Here in Texas, it’s been standard SO policy since the 1800′s and nothing new. The SO has many square miles of county to cover and it’s never been a small task. From loose stock to meth labs and everything in between.

The SO and Texas Rangers work to together often here in Texas.

I always wonder what happen down in Waco with the baked davidian incident. Did the ATF and federals officers override the county sheriff on this occasion?

I think we’d all been mile ahead if the sheriff had just phone David Korish and asked him to drop in the next time he was in town and clear some things up before things got out of hand.

    • cawmun cents

      Amen to that Diw…..
But then the gubment wouldnt get to cowboy up,would they?

” Did the ATF and federals officers override the county sheriff on this occasion?”

      YES

  • Sirian

We all need to support and promote more members to this Association by all means!! Keep Sheriff Arpaio in mind folks, Holder and his thugs are after him. No telling who’s next.

  • 45caliber

I know of several sheriffs or ex-sheriffs who have proved their loyalty to the Constitution and to service of their people. It is too bad all of them won’t.

  • Americanfreedom70

We need all the alies inside the “machine” we can get!
    Nice Job!

  • steve in AZ

I say YAY!!! This may be our last line of defense against the increasing encroachment of Big Brother.

We’re stuck with Dumbnik here in Tucson, but those of you with American sheriffs in your counties should dig deep and give them the support they deserve when protecting you. Not even the POTUS can push a sheriff around in his own county, though his lackeys are still trying to roust sheriff Joe in Maricopa. Sheriff Joe probably is no saint, but as far as I can tell, he enforces the laws of this land, and his detractors always seem to appear in force when he does so.

I am so glad to hear that there are some left in our country. I am a full scale supporter of Sherif Joe , Lets support any more like him. This bunch of crap we have for sherifs where I live is an embarrassing joke. lst year I had A 40,000$ tractor stolen and sold for scrap. I was informed by a freind who did it and where it was. I went into the sherif’s office and made the formal complaint , and wanted them to get to the site before it was cut up and loaded for scrap..Their response was I needed to get a lawyer and make a statement to the county clerks office. The sherif just said that he couldnt do anything as he wasn’t a judge,. By this time the tractor was probably on its way to china to be made into arms (for our good).. That is the only thing I have heard any one say about the sherifs, they cant do any thing about your problems.

    • Peter Propwash

I understand. I had an airplane stolen when I lived in New Mexico. FAA would not take a report from me and aperantly neither State Police or SO bothered to make a report. result I lost an airplane.

Our law officers have a difficult and dangerous job for which they get very little respect or thanks . Often handcuffed by bleeding heart liberal regulations that protect the very individual element breaking the law .That a few “bad apples” and their actions cause the Washington Leftist to think that they should ride roughshod over America with their self serving rules that trample the rights of Americans needs to be addressed and I am pleased to see that there is an organization willing to stand up to those who would render our Constitution ineffective and meaningless . Perhaps through them and others like them Americans will realize just what is going on and boot all the liberal leftists out and take our country back and restore our Constitution .

  • http://personallibertydigest Gottaplenty

When I lived And Operated an airport in N M we had 2 or three air planes stolen at our air port . This was back in the 50s and 60s. The net work of pilots that stayed on the watch for the airplanes was much more affective than the FFA or any sherif . We recovered rather quickly. That would probably be more difficult today though.

  • Ben

As a former Deputy I know the Sheriff is the last line not the local cops they have to follow what the city say to do I back all the Sheriff’s that will stand up for us. Go for it y’all

  • Tim Schreck

This is the best, encouraging news I’ve heard in weeks. I’m a citizen of S.D. I’m also for gun owners rights.

  • Buck

Be carefull people , I too share the enthusiasm for these constitutional sheriffs , but some of them can be corrupted just like the elected officials we send to Washington . We HAVE to start properly vetting people we elect for every office like they are going to marry our son or daughter . With any vetting at all Obamass would never been allowed to run without providing a whole lot more information about himself , even with the MSM covering for him like they did .

  • ranger hall

154 Wonder how many Counties there is in the USA.
I even understand that the group would pay for any Sheriff that could not afford the trip.

  • Wayne

Hurray, It’s about time, If the fat cats in congress won’t do there job, let’s back the ones that will, we can still be the greatest without being the worlds police, arm everyone, then this one side win all will stop, keep power in the people, not the ones who think we all can get along,we are all platarins space cadets, we live in space on a rock, and our neighbors have visited, they left radioactive land India. I hope the sheriffs do some good. Good day and keepen oiled

Sheriffs nationwide could publicly enlist the people in their counties who can and will stand in defense against the fed. It will take more than a handful of Peace Officers, not “LE”, to change anything… this beast is big, powerful, and has all the money behind it. Sheriffs need localized support, and enough of it to stand.

  • ranger hall

    LETS see GOVT Grants.
County Commissioners, Most want to be Politicians. They control the MONEY.
The main Problem with a Lot of Sheriffs is they LIKE the POWER,And some times this leads to Corruption and ETC. And People have lost Control of their Govt.
NOW most all Policemen Belong to the Brotherhood, SELF PROTECTION.
YES and in WACO, The Sheriff Had no Control. HIS FAULT.
YES and in Texas with The VP in that shooting. THE Sheriffs FAULT that no proper investigation was carried out.

  • ranger hall

EACH and Every Police Officer has the right to DEPUTIZE local Citizens…BUT the Powers to be says NO NO. When i was a Young man You covered 50-100 sq miles with no Backup, Only thing you could depend on was the CITIZENS when you needed it. If more Police were allowed to use this Law of the People, YES this was the Peoples law designed to Protect The Policemen we Employ. BUT the system needs Crime to JUSTIFY their BEING,
When i was a young Man I had all the Protection and Help i needed and it did not cost the Taxpayer an arm and a Leg, The People were my Deputys.Protecting their Lives and their Property and their policemans Star or Badge.
When you can feel the Pride and the Trust Men, women and kids have in you and the way you do your Job, THEN you know what it means to Be Proud of yourself.

I was taught that RIGHT and WRONG makes choices for you, Right is Right and wrong is always WRONG.

  • Ridge Runner

I am not too happy with the law inforcement here when i tried to talk to the sheriff about this law that the feds tacked onto the just passed defence bill he didn’t seem to want to talk to me.I told him in no uncertain terms that i was not counting on doing any rhing wrong and had not done any thing wrong and if these sobs came for me i wasn’t going peacefuly.I keep reading the arrest report in the paper and it is just a revolving door policy to take in money. In the last report i read where the judge fined at least three people for having drugs ,dealing drugs,3 or 4 had guns and they were fined put on probation and if they gave up their guns the gun charges were droped.I have read where several guns were taken but not seen any reports of the guns being offered for sale so that should tell you what is going on.

  • Bill

It is about time that the law stood up for the citizens and not some self righteous motive – I thank you for
for standing up for the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

  • Susan C

I live in Elkhart county Indiana…..we have a Constitutional Sheriff Rogers here. He stopped the FDA from continuing its illegal and unconstitutional harassment of an Amish farmer who was selling legal raw milk …..to its owner. Sheriff Rogers received the National Award for Interposition at that convention. We had been honored to have Sheriff Mack at our tea party meeting earlier that month (January 2012) and were able to raise some significant donations to sheriff Mack’s Las Vegas scholarship for more sheriffs to attend. I heartliy suggest that all of you support these constitutional sheriffs….and look for more of them as your elections place them on the ballot. The Constitution, English Law all the way back to the Magna Carta rightly put them in control of their domain. Let’s help them…..let’s elect Constitutional sheriffs…..and remove those who are not.
