Seniors, Are You Listening?

September 27, 2011 by

As we age, we assimilate less and less B12, leaving us vulnerable to increasingly higher levels of homocysteine and leading to sustained inflammation, heart disease and all the diseases of aging.

My study has shown that above age 65 there is very little stomach intrinsic factor. This means that B12 by tablet is practically ineffective.

B12 is very important, so we have to get prescription B12 liquid and small diabetic needles and take injections. I do the injections myself and I give them to my wife.

Dr. Jonathan Wright wrote in his October 2010 Nutrition and Healing that he recommends lowering homocysteine levels with 1,000 micrograms (mcg) daily of folate (as methylfolate or folinic acid) with regular vitamins B6, 50 milligrams (mg) daily. He also recommended 1,000 mcg daily of B12 as methylcobalamin.

It’s easy enough to get high potency folic acid, but it would take a lot of injections to come up to 1,000 mcg daily unless we can get a superior benefit from Solgar sublingual liquid B12 2,000 mcg. The label on the box says the liquid formula does not need to be broken down in the digestive tract.

This seems to bypass the need for intrinsic factor. If so, this would be great for much larger doses of B12 without injections.

Think what this would mean in terms of reducing homocysteines and deadly inflammation!

My best advice is to start taking a quality TMG supplement. TMG refers to trimethylglycine. It will help keep your homocysteine level(s) down. Do business with a reputable supplement store (or via the internet). Stay away from “bargain” supplements.
Protect your prostate, guys. Take zinc (but not too much). Consider taking testosterone, too. Find yourself a medical professional who puts more importance on the health of his or her patients. Good luck, and educate yourselves.

Bob. I just read part of your ad on the 7 lies that medicine is telling patients. As an internist who is conservative i would suggest you listen to this in detail and see if you agree with the demonization of organized medicine that this article suggests. It sows distrust and will lead to hopelessness and despair for the patient if the path of alternative care fails.

Elderly patients i believe need a healthy sense of competition among health care providers (large medical systems) so that they can get two or possibly three opinions regarding their diagnosis.

Your endorsement of this ad which Concentrates on one (alternative medical care) to the exclusion of others (organized medicine, chiropractic etc ) I believe does a disservice to your readers.

Dr. Mike, as a 52-yr. old electrical engineer, I can understand the defensive posture of your profession – I would defend mine as well. However, after observing and studying the medical industry for years, there does seem to be a preponderance of your fellow doctors in what can only be described as an unholy alliance with big-pharma to the financial benefit of both. (See any study of script. drug use in our country.)

Please excuse my cynicism but “my eyes do not lie.” When was the last time any disease was “cured.” And no, I’m not talking about vaccines which prevent diseases. After centuries of medical research and trillions of $$$s spent in just the last 3-4 decades, you’re telling me someone, somewhere hasn’t stumbled onto a “1-pill-cure” for something? Anything? NO! Big pharma only presents the “pill-a-day-for-life” pseudo-cure from which they make billions in profits every year.

Hey, I’m as much in favor of free-market capitalism as anyone but when you have blatant fed-gov. corporatism between the FDA and big-pharma, only innocent patients are left to suffer – physically, mentally and financially.

      Dear mike musty md

I have to say that I do agree.

The US healthcare system is in reality a sickcare system. It is a disease-oriented money system that is the greatest cause of sickness and death in the world. It is a system of conflict of interest, tainted research, greed for money, deceived and pretentious doctors and scientists, lying, cheating, invasion by the morally bankrupt marketing automatons of the drug industry, greedy and power-hungry politicians and state and federal regulators.

Conventional medicine treats symptoms while ignoring the cause of disease and covering up and suppressing alternative (real) cures and treatments of the actual causes of disease, while pushing dangerous and harmful vaccines on unsuspecting children and parents.

      Best wishes,
