Senator Wants To Stop Aid To Israeli Army

TEL AVIV, Israel, Aug. 16 (UPI) — U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy has called for an end to U.S. assistance to three elite Israeli military units suspected of human rights violations, Haaretz said.

Leahy, D-Vt., wants Washington to stop sending assistance to the Israeli navy’s Shayetet 13, the ground forces’ special undercover Duvdevan and the air force’s Shaldag commandos, the Israeli daily said Tuesday.

The senator believes the Israeli military units operating in Gaza and the West Bank have committed human rights violations, the newspaper said.

Some months ago a group of pro-Palestinian protesters staged a demonstration near the senator’s office demanding he denounce the killing of nine Turkish activists aboard the Mavi Marmara by Israeli navy commandos last year.

Leahy, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s subcommittee on foreign operations, was one of the main backers of a 1997 bill barring the United States from providing military assistance or funding to foreign military units suspected of human rights violations or war crimes, Haaretz said.

Leahy wants the new bill to place restrictions on military assistance to Israel — specifically the three elite units — to become part of the U.S. foreign assistance legislation for 2012, the paper said.
