Seeing The Light When The Grid Goes Down

Seeing The Light When The Grid Goes Down

Filipinos have found a new (and practically free) way to use an old source of light, and it’s something you can put into your survival playbook to provide light to a shelter if the electrical grid ever goes down. You can also use the method to provide light to an outbuilding that doesn’t have an electrical connection.

All it takes is a clear, one-liter soda bottle, some water, chlorine and little simple engineering. Fill the bottle with a mixture of water and chlorine, cut a hole in the roof and secure the bottle and you have 55 watts of free and simple solar lighting.

Watch the video to see how it’s done.

Neat idea but, cut a hole in the roof? Not so bad if you live in a cardboard shack with a tin roof in the Philippines. But quite a repair job if it rains or snows.

    • ONTIME

My first thought but if we don’t get rid of this uncredentialed moron in the WH this idea may become widely used.

      • jyrine

It might become widely used until the moron in the WH decides to implement a program that will cause the price of 1 liter soda bottles to “necessarily skyrocket”

Oh you guys have it totally wrong!!! The moron that WAS in the white house that created all the mess that you are blaming this HARVARD grad for has already left!! Thanks so much!!!

          • JimO

Only if his diploma from Harvard is more believable than his birth certificate from Hawaii!!

          • Bleh

Fascinating that your Harvard Grad kept all the policies of the previous Admin and sprinkled a few of his own doozies into the mix…

          • DaveH

Hey, but that’s okay because he’s on her team.

          • DennisCHP

Now Obama want to grant immunity to the illegal Salvadorians. Is this the change you really wanted. You can’t continue to blame Bush for Obama’s terrible agenda. You know Obama has lied, cheated, failed to follow your Constitution (mine also). This is how Hitler got his start by the German people not paying attention and willing to let him take control of the government. He now doesn’t even go through the proper legal channels but rules by caveat. Is this really the man you want to follow? Its ok to make a mistake and vote for someone totally unvetted but then to continue to follow is just plain stupid.

          • vanessa

The first moron went to Harvard business school

I can’t believe somebody thought this was a good enough idea to put on a website. I’m with Cliffystones. Cut a hole in the roof? Do houses in the Phillipines not have attics like probably 99.9% of the houses in the USA?

Actually, on second thought, this would be a great way to light up… my attic… in the daytime…

Now if I want some light, you know, in the NIGHT TIME, and in my living space, oh well. Just have to wait until somebody invents the candle.

    • Kenneth

Why not make these and set them outside in the sun during the day and then bring them in to the rooms they are needed in at night? Maybe I need to try this!

      • Christin

Yes, Kenneth, I believe that is what Bob was implying for us to do for portable light inside OR put this in an out building on your property that you don’t have electricity running to… in any case it is good info to have in a worst case scenario. Can’t hurt to know a few basic things about chemistry or survival should the need arise… and with what is going on with the crazies in charge hang on to all the wisdom you can get.

  • J c

What a wonderful idea. Yes, there are people living in shacks in the US, S America, etc. this will positively impact financially and improve their quality of life.

  • DJ

This will only work in a shack, in the south. It is a light tube, bringing sunlight through a sealed hole in the roof. The chlorine is to keep stuff from growing in the water. Maybe pure alcohol would work in the north, leave some air space for expansion.

    • ONTIME

My second thought…..Good product and can be used on any kind of roof without fear of weather intrusion. Developed by the private sector, free enterprise and capitalism.

This version costs more to do, but will serve well in your modern home, Though my shed may well get a pop bottle light soon.

  • http://Boblivingstonletter Gottaplenty

  • http://Boblivingstonletter Gottaplenty

Also watch the video , a fantastic boom to buisness. New (jobs created)which will go unoticed in the coming election…

  • Angie

Well it did say “probably for sheds and the like in the US.” why are people so cynical? It’s just an idea. Get over it.

  • jeff coleman

Great idea for sheds and shacks people take for granted in case of disaters this maybe a valuable tool for survial and cut relief cost.As for the Obama comments you guys can take your hoods off but you can’t change your mind you sit quietly while the real moron and vice prez i mean crook bankrupted this country and led us into war killing Saddam and look at Iraq they got more problems now than before we should have stayed out .This patrioted idealist properganda reminds me of the torchlite Nazi rallies look at things as they are and look at the mess we’ve had to clean up from the previous administration.

    • Joe H.

      jeff coleman,
yet the hero you worship has started three wars, spent three trillion dollars in three years, invested tax money in companies that then went bankrupt, screwed investors, has taken constitutional freedoms away, and tried to circumvent the constitution on gun ownership. YEAH BUDDY!! YOU SURE PICK WINNERS!!!
