Secession Petitions Crop Up With Obama Win

WASHINGTON, (UPI) — Online petitions in 16 states have cropped up in the wake of President Barack Obama’s re-election, seeking to secede from the union, government officials said.

Using the Obama administration’s own We the People website allowing Internet petitions to be lodged with the White House, people in 17 states have asked for permission to leave the union. Most cite the Declaration of Independence — which isn’t a legal document — as their grounds.

None of the petitions cite Obama’s re-election explicitly as the reason for seeking secession, though none of the petitions existed before Tuesday when he was re-elected, the website Politico.com reported Monday.

The two largest petitions are from Texas and Louisiana. Both have more than 10,000 signatures. The Texas petition only needs 7,000 more before it would force an official White House response, as per the rules the Obama administration set forth for petitions on the site.

Other states where petitions have originated include: Kentucky, Oregon, Montana, North Dakota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Arkansas, South Carolina and Missouri.

    I’m surprised that Texas is not on your list. Four years ago, after Obama won his first term, they were talking about seceding. As I recall, one of the conditions for becoming a state was that if it did not work out for them, Texas was free to leave the union and become an independent state. If any states do successfully secede, I’m seriously considering moving to one of them.

      Oops! It looks as though I skimmed over the article too fast. Texas IS on the list. I spent my last year in the army at Fort Sam Houston and liked it in San Antonio. It reminded me a bit of Seattle, where I now live, without the hills.

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness[3]

We need to bring back teaching the factual history of the former United States.

    This reminds me of when Michelle Bachman wanted to follow the lead of Rick Perry and have Minnesota secede from the United States.She wanted all fifty states to follow her lead and join up as one.She is just too precious.

    WOW! Now here’s a story that you can really dig in to. I was surprised to see California on the list of states petitioning to secede from the union, until I went to the sight. Yes, a petition was there and there are about 5,000 signatures, but well over half are from residents of other states. This made me wonder about other “blue” states on the list. Delaware is among those with a petition, but a quick scan of about 500 names (out of 4,260) reveals that around 85% are from out of state. Not only were the numbers the same in New York, but a guy from North Dakota started the petition for them! In fact, he started petitions for his home state and Nebraska as well.

    this raises some real questions about these petitions. I grabbed a name off the list of signatories on Alaska’s petition, Michael P from San Antonio. I then began to scan a few of the petitions and guess what? It appears that he spent some time this morning signing one petition after another. And he’s not the only one. Michele K of Spring Texas, and Michelle K of Dayton Ohio also turned up again and again. And how about Monsieur C from Nouvelle France?

    It’s clear that this is anything but a genuine ground swell of opposition to the re-election of President Obama. I’ll grant you that there are some states like Texas, Alabama and Louisiana that might genuinely have enough signatures, but do you really expect the Federal Government to agree to a request for secession when the majority of the signatures don’t even come from the state? In many of these cases I can’t decide if the petition is,
    1) a genuine request from the citizens to break free.
    2) a cheap attempt to further erode the President’s ability to govern.
    3) an attempt by some to get other states tossed out of the union (I can think of a few I wouldn’t miss.)
