Seaweed Fibers May Help Combat Obesity

Seaweed fibers may help combat obesityResults of a recent UK study suggest that seaweed fibers may one day be capable of helping people fight obesity.

In the study, a team of Newcastle University researchers used an artificial gut to test the effectiveness of more than 60 different natural fibers by measuring the amount of fat that was digested and absorbed with each alternative treatment.

Lead investigators Iain Brownlee and Jeff Pearson found that alginate—a natural fiber found in sea kelp—was able to reduce fat intake by approximately 75 percent, which is more competitive than the majority of over-the-counter anti-obesity treatments.

"This suggests that if we can add the natural fiber to products commonly eaten daily—such as bread, biscuits and yogurts—up to three quarters of the fat contained in that meal could simply pass through the body," said Brownlee.

The next step for the research team is to conduct clinical trials to see how effective alginate is when eaten as part of a normal diet. In addition to weight management, adding seaweed to food has been proven to boost fiber content and overall digestive health.

    If you are concerned with your weight you must do all you can to avoid fructose unless it is in whole fruit. The number one source of calories in the US is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)and it is much less healthy than sugar, regardless of what you have been told. All American jams and jellies are now made with high fructose corn syrup made from genetically modified (GMO)corn that did not exist in nature until a few decades ago. HFCS is believed to be one of the major causes of our soon-to-end obesity epidemic (someone smarter than I has said that in five years, after Congress destroys the value of the dollar by their incessant spending that no one will be able to afford to be fat). Some GMO foods that are common in our foods are outlawed in Europe but the lobbyists are promoting them and there is much pressure on American farmers to use GMO grains and seeds and the artificial bovine hormones. I only use cane sugar or natural Demerara sugar (from Wal-Mart and a few other places). Sugar Beets are now genetically altered so I avoid sugar unless it is the above. Some say crystalline fructose is worse than HFCS, containing lead, mercury, and cadmium. I have found that in vitamin-waters hidden behind sugar. Learn to like hot tea in it’s myriad forms and you will be way ahead of the game. Hot tea will help food digest and add to your overall health. There are many dozens of different plants from which tea can be made. I have gathered some in New England myself and the tea is quite good. I do like a Coca-Cola once in a while but get Jones soda from Canada on occasion and Coca-Cola from Mexico where they still use sugar. Bought a case of that in or near Gaithersburg a week ago. I avoid all fat-free and sugar free products because there is always something worse substituted for them. You can learn to grow Stevia which is used daily in Japan for nearly a century and South America for over a thousand years but our sugar industry got Congress to outlaw it being added to food about 75 years ago. You an buy it too but I was given some seeds last week and will soon be growing my own, like oregano. It’s a tropical plant so it must be taken in when the weather dips below the 50′s. Also do all you can to avoid milk, cheese and ice cream made from milk containing artificial bovine hormones. If the milk comes from farms that don’t use it they proudly say so on the label (where they are allowed to do so). Our increasingly socialist government says it’s OK but ask yourself, why is it outlawed in most other advanced countries in the world? Cheese from Canada is safe as well as any of the major countries in the western world from Australia to Europe. I’ve inquired of major cheesemakers and some are very coy in their answers. Let the buyer beware! Like wise butter needs to be organic or at least from cows not exposed to this horrible artificial hormone that was made illegal in Canada, not because of what it does to humans, but what it does to the cows! I get my natural grass fed cow butter in cans from New Zealand (shop around, prices vary greatly on the Internet)and it will even last a few years without refrigeration. I occasionally buy a pound of organic in the super market. As for seaweed, it can be purchased form some health food stores and there is a trace of kelp in my ALIVE whole food vitamin and mineral supplement that I take daily as well as the capsule of kelp I take (only twice a week), both reasonably purchased from http://www.vitacost.com in Florida where some 20,000 products are available at very reasonable cost. I also take Yaeyama Chlorella from Japan and while not a seaweed it is an extremely beneficial fresh water algae and at the rate of two per day a ten month supply costs about $14. Organic eggs are very healthy if they are free range and not the bug-a-boo on Choleresterol that some believe. Of course six a day would not be healthy. Much to learn but it is well worth it. I’ve never written a book on nutrition but mention nutrition in each of my books. Having your own garden is a blessing too and I’m working on that one. Learn to make your own bread from whole grains and soups from whole vegetables if you can and you will be doubly blessed when you see what the next few years are like regarding not only the cost but the availability of all the foods we take for granted.
