School Officials, Parents Forced To Be Preppers

December 21, 2012 by

School Officials, Parents Forced To Be Preppers
While the Nation mourned, parents and school officials across the country began prepping to keep schoolchildren safe.

Schools throughout the Nation re-evaluated security policies in the days following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. And while media did what they could to portray the shooter’s mother, Nancy Lanza, as an off-the-rails “doomsday prepper,” many parents and school officials throughout the Nation have seemingly become preppers themselves.

School officials throughout the Nation have spent the past several days re-evaluating school security measures and asking themselves if lockdown drills conducted in the past sufficiently prepare school officials to deal with the terrifying possibility of an armed intruder on campus.

According to NBC, teachers at many schools throughout the Nation have been asked to answer a four-question safety survey to get a better overview of how safe America’s classrooms are: “Do you have only one entry way to your campus? Can you close your classroom curtains and completely cover your windows? Does your classroom door have an inside locking mechanism? When was the last time you practiced a lockdown drill?”

Some school districts, responding to outcry from local residents, are considering implementing new school safety measure involving local police and community involvement.

In the city of Cullman, Ala., — more than 1,000 miles from where the Connecticut massacre occurred — school Superintendent Jan Harris has spent the days following the tragedy answering phone calls and letters from concerned community members.

“One grandmother told me she would be willing to guard the doors, and she said she knew a lot of others who would be willing to do the same,” Harris told The Cullman Times. “When I thought about the offers from so many people, I came to the realization that perhaps we’ve been missing a great opportunity to involve retired people in our community with some of our needs in the schools.”

That school district, like others throughout the country, has also been working closely with its local police department to beef up patrols in school zones in the wake of the tragedy.

Officials of the Pasco school district in Florida ordered preparedness items before the events that unfolded last Friday. The items have become subject to National attention as talks continue of extended school lockdowns in response to school emergencies. That school district had used Federal grant money to purchase hundreds of emergency portable toilets and sanitation kits to be kept in every classroom. Officials said that the purchase was made due to hurricane lockdowns that could keep students bound in safe areas for hours on end. The harsh realization that an active shooter on campus could create lockdown or hostage situations offers new perspective for those who believed the toilets an unnecessary purchase.

Student services director Lizette Alexander said the purchase has helped the district improve its readiness.

“Try not to make it a joke,” Alexander said to a local newspaper covering the bucket toilets. “When it is needed, it is needed terribly. It is not a joke. It is preparedness.”

Other schools are looking to an option that may have once been considered a definite no-go: allowing teachers to train and arm themselves on school property.

There are a handful of schools throughout the Nation that already allow teachers and administrators to carry firearms to work; lawmakers throughout the country are looking to them to consider the possibility of broadening the policies. Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota and Oregon are considering policies in Texas, Arizona and six other States that allow teachers to carry guns to school pending written authorization of the school district.

In Harrold, Texas, where the nearest police department is 30 minutes away from the school and officials say it is financially impossible to hire an armed guard, a policy allowing teachers to be armed has been in place for nearly half a decade without incident.

“We don’t have money for a security guard, but this is a better solution,” Superintendent David Thweatt said. “A shooter could take out a guard or officer with a visible, holstered weapon, but our teachers have master’s degrees, are older and have had extensive training. And their guns are hidden. We can protect our children.”

Many parents throughout the country, shaken by the realization that their children could go to school never to return because of senseless violence, are also examining ways to ensure protection.

Companies that manufacture bulletproof armor for backpacks report an unprecedented uptick in sales over the course of the past week. Salt Lake City-based armor company Amendment II reported that it has more orders for the backpack armor than it is able to fill.

“This armor was designed for soldiers, and parents are ordering it for their kids,” said Richard Craig, president and CEO of Amendment II. “Before Friday, we were selling them to law enforcement and military. That changed in the blink of an eye.”

The backpacks, which retail for $300 apiece, were designed for and primarily sold to police and military prior to last Friday. But some companies that sell the bulletproof backpacks report a sales spike of less than one unit a month to order volume that is crashing websites.

Craig, however, told the Orlando Sentinel that parents purchasing the backpacks should explain to their children what situations they could be needed in and why they are purchasing them. The former Air Force veteran said that he and his business partners do not want to profit off of the terrible tragedy, and are currently trying to decide if they want to be a part of selling the items to parents who want them for child protection.

Boy oh boy, we sure have traveled a long way from “Little House on the Prairie”, haven’t we?

    • Deerinwater

Yea we have ~ but then The American Civil War was a blood as War can get and still call it War.

Little House on the Prairie , instills warms and fuzzed thoughts of childhood for most of us while it follow the end of a great war.

    • Nadzieja Batki

What is even more incongruous is the title preppers assigned to people who made fun of the real preppers. They spent tv time and newspapers and magazines mocking what they now have become.

    • texastwin827

Actually, Warrior, history teaches us that the era of “Little House on the Prairie” was rife with indian attacks and bandits roaming the prairies. Being able to hunt to supplement the food supply was not the only reason they had guns.

History shows us that was the “norm” from the time of the Colonial days, forward, which is why we had “militias”….armed, civilians who mustered anytime there was an attack of any kind.

      • Gordon

This is also why multiple families decided to live in small communities that became defendable positions from attackers. Even today, 2 people with fully auto AKs cannot defend themselves against an unarmed mob of 20-30 people who are intent on stealing all your food and supplies.. Think about it.

When people kick God out of school and the public square, satan is always in the wings ready to take His place. Ever wonder why these evil people pick a Gun Free Zone to do their evil damage? No, it must me mental or a bad live or some other crap, No it is evil replacing good, the U.S. better wake up and soon or this nation will be no more.

      • Reloader

Give me a break. What god?

        • dalek

When you meet him, you won’t get a “break” but you can still ask for one tho. Good luck with that.

      • Lobohunter

God or religious beliefs have nothing to do with how a crazy psycho chooses a “gun free zone” as a place to start killing. It is because it is a “GUN FREE ZONE”. That translates as a “free killing field”. When is the last time you saw one of these psychos shoot up a police station. He has to be the only one with a gun to make this mass murder work.

The anti gun lobby can take some credit for creating these killing fields. They are pretty quiet about their part in creating these killing fields with their over-emotional stupidly about keeping our children safe with a place that only a criminal with a gun would tread.

Keeping guns out of here. Keeping guns out of there. They created the groundwork for this crime and others like it. Preaching for stronger gun laws that don’t work to replace the strong gun laws that already don’t work.

It does not take a rocket scientist with an IQ off the charts to realize that the gun laws ONLY affect law abiding citizens. Their gun laws put all of us in mare danger.

It also does not require an IQ off the charts to realize that the only way to slow down and eventually stop this type of violent crime, any violent crime, is for the general public to be armed. If the criminal does not know who has a gun, that anybody around him might be armed, he can not safely ply his trade. In any case, if he tries, he won’t get far.

      • Gordon

Reloader= You atheists are so disrespectful and shameful as human beings that you cannot allow someone with different beliefs to express themselves. What is it that you atheists fear so greatly? Death, nothingness, or the possibility of hell?

  • Howlingmad

No matter “WHAT” might be done . . . there will AWAYS be “CRAZYS”, of one kind or another. Turning schools into PRISONS, is “NOT” the answer . . . Reasonable SECURITY for access, is the ONLY smart thing to do. Anything else, is just STUPID.

  • http://none Dale Boecker

For some reason, these shooters always, always, always pick targets that have RESTRICTIVE GUN LAWS!! I will never have the opportunity to encounter one of these “crazy” people because they KNOW they will die FIRST!

    • wandamurline

The State of Connecticut has very restrictive gun laws and Illinois, until a Circut Judge said you cannot do it, had banned permits for people to carry concealed weapons. So why is Chicago the most violent crime ridden city in the nation? And why did this happen in Connecticut? People were not prepared and they have been fed the bull that guns are dangerous and should not be allowed, but remember, the criminals and nut wads WILL find a gun when they need it and you will be the one that suffers. As Thomas Jefferson so plainly stated….”Those who pound their guns to plows….will plow for those who do not”. Can’t say it any better than our forefather.

      • dalek

I have to remember that quote. That is well said. It also why we are citizens instead of subjects. Citizens are armed, subjects are not.

  • Granpa David

I was thinking, if teacher herds little students into the cloak room or corner of the classroom and the shooter walks in to a helpless unarmed teacher, we know the result. If she has a .40 Glock we may not see the same result, in fact it may deter the entire scene.

    • Joz

you are a teacher: Would you take a gun to school? Just because the teachers have a gun… does not mean that when confronted by a psychopath killer they will be able to get to the gun and actually use it against the shooter ! When a criminal points a gun at a teacher and yells FREEZE or HANDS UP or EVERYONE ON THE FLOOR no teacher will run for a gun…. s/he will be shot first ! then screeming/scared kids next . So what has been accomplished? quicker death of teachers and little kids ! I WISH SO WISH THAT SCHOOLS COULD ROLE PLAY THIS WITH TEACHERS. THE GUN IS LOCKED UP…SO LITTLE KIDS CAN’T GET INTO ONE !. TEACHER IS WRITING ON THE BOARD… A DOOR BURSTS OPEN….. A CRIMINAL YELLS. O.K. EVERYONE ON THE FLOOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then what? THE TEACHER HAS NO TIME TO MORE, TO GO TO HER LOCKED UP GUN, THEN (IS THE GUN LOADED? DURING SCHOOL?) LITTLE CURIOUS KIDS COULD ACCIDENTALLY GET TO ONE? IS S/HE GOING TO YELL BACK, I HAVE GUN, CAN I GO GET IT SO I CAN DEFEND MYSELF AND THE KIDS FROM YOU??? now this is ‘stupid’ law ! oh maybe? the teacher in the next room, hearing the commotion or gun shots, would be able to get to a gun and be ready ! So! what to do? what to do? BULLET PROOF VESTS? for kids in schools? What about gun shots to the head?

      • dalek

I bet this Adam kid didn’t tell anyone to freeze. He just went in and started shooting whoever he saw. Those teachers/staff were killed taking a bullet to protect those kids. You really think those same teachers would not have went for a gun? Really? Do you even see the problem with that logic?

The gun should not be in a locked drawer. It should be in a holster on his/her hip, where it belongs. Having a gun on their person is the best way to make sure it is secure. It should also be loaded. A unloaded gun is about as good as no gun at all.

      • Gordon

MOST people are trying to fit possible circumstances into their perception of reality that they have acheived from watching movies. Movies are not real life, and neither are the circumstances of violence, except that the perp is trying to portray his version of a movie. As a teacher, I would gladly carry a 45 in the school.

      • Dave

You are of course making some assumptions not based on reality, 1st, what makes you think the teacher(s) would have to “go” anywhere in order to present a defensive handgun? If they had to be locked up they won’t be of very much use in the real world, I agree with you as far as that goes, they MUST be carried and available for IMMEDIATE access to be effective; 2. You’re also assuming that our school teachers and administrators would be automatically LESS effective that the 2 million armed citizens who successfully use firearms (mainly handguns) to defend themselves and others each year, often without ever having to fire a shot! I could go on for a long time, but don’t really see the point. Cheers.

        • dalek

I have a friend that I talk to quite often. She has a son that is a teacher. He is also a instructor for the NRA. He has four kids. He has no criminal record at all. He is also a good shot and knows very well how to handle a gun plus, he knows how to handle kids when it comes to guns. He is in the process of asking for permission to carry his gun. He’s a good size guy, not fat just muscular, so having a gun that kids can not see should be easy for him. They also make holsters that hide very well now too.

The school where he teaches is small. It is a really good community. I would think a shooting at a school would never happen there BUT, what if I am wrong? I would much rather him be there to protect those kids given the years of training he already has than to not have him armed and ready and it happen and lots of kids get killed.

One other thing I notice about shootings where the shooter is stopped by a conceal carry gun. They rarely miss. Sometimes, the conceal carry person never even fires. Once the shooter sees resistance, they shoot themselves. From what I have read, this is what happened at Sandy Hook when the police got there. It is also the same as what happened in a mall in Oregon I think. Same thing in other places.

That said, I think it was in either New York or D.C. where the cops shot over half a dozen people and never hit the person they were aiming at. That may not happen often as far as them missing so badly but those people that got shot, most likely would rather a citizen who can shoot did the shooting that day. lol

Let me attempt to answer some of your questions:

13 rules of gunfighting that everyone should know:

      1) Guns have only two enemies, rust and politicians.

      2) It’s always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

      3) Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.

      4) Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arm’s length.

      5) Never say,”I’ve got a gun.” The first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off.

      6) The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes; the response time of a .357 magnum is 1400 feet per second.

      7) The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win- cheat if necessary.

      8) Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets…you may get killed with your own gun, be he will have to beat you to death with it, because it will be empty.

      9) If you are in a gunfight; If you are not shooting, you should be loading. If you are not loading, you should be moving. If you aren’t shooting, moving or loading; you’re probably dead.

      10) In a life and death situation, do something…it may be wrong…but do…something!

      11) If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid…Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

      12) You can say ‘stop’ ‘alto’ or any other word, but a largebore muzzle pointed at
someone’s head is pretty much a universal language.

      13) You cannot save the world, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.

How to secure a loaded gun on campus: One touch Bio metric safes…gotta love technology. Only the teacher in a classroom or the principle can open it.

As for your scenario, as soon as the first shot is fired, you can bet that every other teacher on campus wil be armed…and the perp will never make it off campus alive..guaranteed. Guns on any premises…is a criminal deterrent. Would you attempt a robbery if you knew that everyone in a store is armed? The same goes anywhere else where firearms a known to be on premises. Several years ago, Kennesaw Ga. Made it mandatory for it’s residents to have at least one firearm in the home. Crime rates dropped by about 40% (overall)the first year. Home invasions dropped by almost 90% that same year…yes..guns known to be on premises…deter criminals.

Try using that thing on your shoulders…for something other than a hatrack.

“Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading”
      Thomas Jefferson

I kindly ask for permission to repost this. It is for one so true and secondly very well said.

I ask because I bet you have a gun close by. ROFL

      • Average Joe

I have no problems with re-postings…and yes, I do happen to have one within arms length..a 9mm Makarov…to be exact. ;)

      • dalek

I posted it on my facebook. Thanks. :-)

I have a question on this shooting. I have seen several different reports on what guns were used. First, there was a report of a “long gun” in the trunk of the car that the shooter drove to the school, and stole from his just murdered mother. They said it was handguns used in the shooting itself. Now there are reports that ALL shots were from a “long gun”. The story seems to be changing.

So, does anyone know which one is correct yet? There is a video of the cops taking a “long gun” out of a trunk. The gun seems to me to be a shotgun based on the way it was unloaded but the video isn’t that great. It could be a rifle since I have not seen each and every type of rifle out there.

Was a rifle used or handguns? If it was handguns, this changes things. They can not say a assault weapons ban would stop this since none were used.

        Thoughts? Concrete proof?

      • Average Joe

        dalek ,
Something is starting to look a bit fishy.
First off, what they keep calling a “long gun” is actually not a long gun, it is a carbine. Long guns have longer barrels for long range accuracy , up to a mile or more (think sniper rifle), cabines have a shorter barrel for maneuverability in close quarters…effective accuracy up to about 300 yards.

As for the rest of the story, I say something is fishy because
        1) The medical examiner has said that they were all shot by the :long gun” .223.
        2) the long gun (carbine) was shown comming from the vehicle and manhandled by the cop ( with no gloves on, BTW) destroying any evidence that may have been on the weapon.
        3) First, there were two handguns used inside…but not the Bushmaster .223…then there were two handguns and the Bushmaster used…Now there are 4 handguns used inside…but not the Bushmaster.
Yes the story keeps changing….and something is definitely rotten in Denmark….
        False flag? MK-Ultra?….I don’t care to speculate…but something isn’t right here…..

      • Gordon

Average Joe. That’s real cute, and often quoted. Unfortunately someone who has not carried a concealed weapon for decades wrote that mess based on his movie perceptions. Some of those things will get you killed. Better rethink each of those items.

      • Gordon

Dalek= really serious people who teach gun conduct (like GunSite. com) realize that that list of cute sayings is truely a way for you to have your gun removed from your “cold dead hands.”

2-4-8-10-12……….. as for #12, FACT= Many many many actual situations have been reported that pointing your gun at “his privates” is far more a deterrent than his head or chest. Men have been protective of the “little man” since they were 2 years old, and fear that more than death.

      • dalek

@Gordon. The biggest rules are this. Do NOT let him with 15 feet of you. Further if you use a long gun, rifle or shotgun. Shoot to kill not wound. Win, no matter what. If you are in your home and someone is there and up to no good, you are in the right. Period.

Should a person follow those no matter the circumstance, maybe not. Thing is, some have no idea and never give it a thought until they hear the glass break or the door being kicked in. You don’t have time to make a list of what to do at that point. A person may read that and think about it a bit. Having some sort of plan is better than no plan at all.

First off, the politicians must be removed from the equation. Damnedocrats grasp on this as a way to eliminate the Bill of Rights of the Constitution, as such they must be removed from the equation. The States should be in charge of any actions and gun free zones must be exchanged for rights of instructed carry for the adults involved, again politicians need not apply. The politicians have created the gun free zones which are death traps for our citizens and children. Muzzle the damnedocrats and any Republicans who are in favor of removal of the Constitution as law must be priority number one. Allowing the damnedocrats to make an issue of this which the usurper in the White House can run with will see an even more rapid end to the freedoms our nation was founded on. Trading freedom for political promise of security is a lose lose deal for all except criminal damnedocrat politicians as they will have their own militia, which they will need to protect themselves from the wrath of the people if the people ever wake up. Damnedocrats are never going to wake up.

  • COTom

Attacking the 2nd Amendment will not solve the problem as, it isn’t the issue. There are many qualfied seniors to stand guard over their g’kids, just as there are many vets who would do it to keep their kids safe.

Take GOD out of the equation and this is what we got. The politicians are for taking GOD and country out of everything they can. Politicians are not for and nor do they speak for the citizens that elected them.

  • 357Mag

American citizen gunowners stop 6500 crimes everyday in America. They only have to shoot 8% of the time. Thats 2.4 million crimes that are stopped, just like the oregon mall shooter

  • gman

So true and sad to say politicians that know this is 100%. Politicians that will voice it practically zero. Even dumbo MCCain the pow does not and he should be shouting it.

  • gman

Absolutely amazing how government offices are protected by gun totting paid employees but yet make it illegal to have guns for protection in schools. Do as I say not as I do. Ok, I get it now?

  • Wayne Leach

Teachers, principals, custodians in schools should be trained in, and carry weapons; they are 1st responders, on site, and can immediately eliminate the menace. It is not necessary, and it is too costly, to go to the expense of hiring more armed guards, law enforcement personnel..Provide the teachers and other 1st responders with proper compensation for their training, and I believe that most of them will gladly provide the needed protection for the students. If not, hire some that will.

    • dalek

I agree. Think about it this way. One teacher on each hallway. One person in the office. If anything happens, someone is literally seconds away and additional help is just a few more seconds away. My old school had 5 hallways. The 5th hallway had classes like shop and such so it only had like 2 or 3 rooms since they were large. For my old school, 6 people could protect that school from top to bottom. It also had intercoms, even back in the 80′s when I was there. If someone starts something, any teacher could go to another hallway if needed. They could use the intercoms to communicate with each other.

While I mostly agree with the NRA statement today, it would not take much to make these schools safe. My old school had something like 50 or so teachers plus the office staff. It would only require just over 10% to volunteer to get this done. If 20% did this, nobody would dare go to a school and start trouble.

Some schools may not allow this but of they don’t, then they get to deal with the aftermath. We can already see that not allowing anyone to have a gun in “gun free zones” is not working. It just leaves everyone defenseless.

    • afdbghq

There is a simple solution to this problem. How many vets are there in this country that are already well trained and physically (but more importantly) mentally qualified to carry that could be made teachers. This would also solve the problem of the punks in the classroom. The punks would be facing a well trained professional and not some brain washed liberal with no concept of how to defend themselves let alone their students.

This would also be a great help in providing a good job for the vets.

      • dalek

That would work but so could this. When cops, military and maybe even some federal agents retire, ask them to volunteer to patrol the schools in the town where they live. Yea, some may not but I bet a lot of them will. Most towns/cities have 4 to 5 school buildings since they splits the grades up. Just a half dozen people could at least put the fear into a potential shooter. If only a few volunteer, have it to where a shooter will never know which school those people are at. If enough people volunteer, there could be people at all the schools from the time they open till they close.

There are a lot of ways to deal with this situation. None of them have to involve more guns laws either. Well, may have to get of the “gun free zone” laws.

      • Gordon

Our local high school has ONE officer on duty. In this building, he can’t be more than 3 minutes away when the shooting starts.

  • Lobohunter

As it has been said: The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun. Sorry if that bothers some people but the days of going on vacation and leaving your house unlocked “are over”. In our society you are not guaranteed safety with the doors and windows barred and the drawbridge up. It is up to the individual to protect him(her)self. Until a lot more people start carrying guns, the crime rate is not going to drop. Teachers should be trained in the use of firearms and carry in school. It is the only logical alternative. THE ONLY WAY TO BE RELATIVELY SAFE IS IF THE BAD GUY DOES NOT KNOW WHO IS ARMED.

    Subject: Gun School For Teachers

Las Vegas, Nevada: In the wake of the yet another senseless school massacre, I ask all our politicians, law enforcement officials, and school administrators one simply question:

How many more children have to die before we will find the testicular fortitude, as a nation, to put in place REAL policies that will stop a deranged gunman in his tracks, before he can commit mass murder on innocent and defenseless children?

How many times do I have to offer the nation THE solution?

What the hell is wrong with the leaders of our country? Find a pair, and make the RIGHT decision to protect our children, not more of the wrong decisions that create the opportunity for the next lunatic to murder at will with zero resistance!

Once again, Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, arguably the world leader in providing intensified courses in the defensive use of firearms for private citizens, has the answer to stopping further attacks on school children. Front Sight will once again offer free firearms training to any school administrator, teachers, or full time staff members designated as school Safety Monitors.

Front Sight will accept for training up to three staff members from each school, college or university.

Applicants must submit a letter requesting training on school letterhead signed by the top school district official and designating the applicant as the school’s Safety Monitor.

Please forward this e-mail to your state and federal legislators, local law enforcement departments and your child’s school administrator, as well as your friends and family, asking them to do the same.

    Guns and Teachers

As Front Sight’s Founder and Director, I understand my offer to train armed school teachers may offend some school administrators and parents who do not see arming and training selected school staff members as a positive solution to violent attacks. However, historically, my approach has worked while gun control has actually increased violent crime by shifting the balance of power to favor the criminals and lunatics.

My offer is not a new idea. In the early 70′s, Israel was faced with much greater problems of armed terrorist attacks on schools. The cry for more gun control was heard then too, but Israel very carefully analyzed all possible options before adopting the proactive position of arming and training their teachers. School shootings stopped and terrorists looked for easier targets. Gun control never has and never will stop criminals and madmen from carrying out acts of gun violence.

In our country, every time a misguided individual on psychiatric drugs goes on a killing spree, anti self-defense legislators, watch the polls and exploit the dead victims in order to fool the public into accepting more gun control. It is time our country finds some resolve and the will to tackle the real problem, which is rooting out the actual influences in the lives people hat predispose them to commit atrocities. The problem is not guns. Guns don’t cause these incidents to occur any more than cameras cause child pornography or automobiles cause traffic fatalities.

Israel had the right answer. Society is safer when we train and arm our law abiding citizens. As the defensive training leader in the USA, Front Sight is willing and able to set the example for the rest of the country to follow.

    Armed Teachers

Dave Clark, who recently retired after teaching for the last 25 years at Junction Junior High School in Livermore, California agrees with Front Sight’s philosophy. In fact, Mr. Clark has previously attended a Four Day Defensive Handgun course at Front Sight at his own expense and found the course to be exactly what is needed to train fellow teachers to stop an attack similar to Columbine school and Virginia Tech. “Front Sight provides safe and responsible training to a level that exceeds law enforcement standards.” Says Mr. Clark. “Among the many lessons taught, I learned universally accepted rules in justifiable use of deadly force. More importantly, I learned when not to shoot and how to be more mentally prepared to see a lethal confrontation coming before it happens in order to avoid it. The firearms training is second to none and clearly gives the graduates the skill needed to save the lives of those in their charge if ever attacked. If my school district chose to adopt a policy of sending selected teachers to Front Sight for concealed handgun training, I would wholeheartedly support it and volunteer as a Safety Monitor. There is no reason for our children to continue to be victimized when free, professional training is available to stop school attacks.”

    Guns in Schools

There is evidence that a gun in the hand of a teacher will stop an armed attacker. The vice-principal of a school in Pearl, Mississippi used his handgun to stop and detain an armed killer until the police arrived. It seems obvious that armed and trained staff members inside the school are in a better position to identify the attackers and do something immediately to resolve the situation. It is much harder for police, who arrive on the scene too late to stop the killing.

Lawmakers With Blood on Their Hands

An obstacle to training and arming teachers is the current law in many states prohibiting the possession of firearms on school grounds even when the possessor is qualified and has a concealed weapons license.

Understand that those laws did not prevent or stop the gun violence at numerous schools over the last ten years. The brazen attacks in school after school during the last decade indicate criminals have concluded that ‘Gun-Free-School-Zone’ actually means ‘Government Certified, Helpless and Unarmed Victim Zone.’

Schools Can’t Afford to Pass on No Cost Security

Most school districts cannot afford to have even one full time police officer in every school, but they can easily afford to train three or more of their selected staff members to a higher level of firearms training than offered in police academies because Front Sight will provide the training at no cost.

Retired law enforcement firearms instructor, Mike Waidelich from Bakersfield, California strongly supports the Front Sight concept of arming and training teachers. “Nearly every tragedy on or off school grounds in the entire 30 years of my law enforcement career could have been prevented or the damage done considerably limited, by the presence of an armed and trained individual.”

    Concealed Guns

The training provided in Front Sight’s basic training classes easily exceeds the training provided in most police basic training academies.

Front Sight proved it on their nationally televised reality series Front Sight Challenge. 80 Seasoned law enforcement officers from around the country went head-to-head in tests of marksmanship, speed and tactics against 80 private citizens– including teachers– who had not received any training other than Front Sight’s firearms courses. Remarkably, the Front Sight trained, private citizens won over half of every contest.

Teachers will be trained to carry a concealed weapon, so potential attackers will not know which teachers are armed and which are not. In states that have adopted concealed weapon laws for private citizens, violent crime has dropped. School attacks will drop as well once it is known that any of the teachers and staff members on school grounds have the ability and training to stop a violent attack immediately.

There is also scientific research that supports Front Sight’s stance on concealed weapon training from John Lott, Jr. at University of Chicago School of Law who published Crime, Deterrence and Right-to-Carry Concealed Handguns in July 1996. Mr. Lott’s research of cross-sectional time-series data from all 3054 U.S. counties from 1977 to 1992 found that allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons deters violent crime and appears to produce no increase in accidental deaths. If those states which did not have right-to-carry concealed handgun provisions had adopted them in 1992, approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, and over 60,000 aggravated assaults would have been avoided yearly.

    Gun Control Increases Violent Crime

How many times must we experience another Littleton, Colorado or Virginia Tech or Newtown Connecticut massacre before we wake up, study the research and adopt policies which actually reduce crime and begin saving our children instead of leaving them helpless victims when the next psych drug user snaps?

Gun control increases violent crime yet some politicians continue to tout disarming law abiding citizens as a solution. Front Sight has a better solution.

Arm and train school teachers to carry a concealed weapon. And post a DIFFERENT sign outside of ever school!

Look for the RIGHT sign all over America. They are in front of the homes of armed and trained Front Sight students. If you were a deranged murderer, which house would you invade? One with an armed and trained occupant with a Front Sight sign or one who had a “Gun Free Zone” sign in his yard? The answer is simply to any rational person.
