School Board Accepts, Then Rejects, Reading List That Includes Books On Drug Use, Gay Sex

Early this year, discussions about editing Mark Twain classics to remove uncomfortable language in the literary staples made headlines across the country when editions of Twain’s period novels with some of the author’s racial language removed were released. The idea behind doing so was to create a more classroom-friendly version of the work for student-required reading. This begs the question from some: Who will edit the books listed on New Jersey’s Monroe Township school district’s required reading list?

Fox News reported on Tuesday that the school district had on its required reading list novels depicting graphic sexual scenes including homosexual orgies, one novel, entitled TWEAK (Growing up on Methamphetamines), was completely based on the everyday life of a drug addict.

“Some of the language is inappropriate,” said Chuck Earling, superintendent of Monroe Township Schools in Williamstown, N.J. to Fox News. “We were not trying to create controversy. We were just trying to get students to read.”

The following is an excerpt from Nic Sheff’s novel, TWEAK:

We shoot up and take a shower. We have sex in my old bed until my knees are rubbed raw. After that, I smoke cigarettes and look for stuff to steal.

The tone of the novel remains relatively constant as the storyline follows the author’s on-again off-again addiction to methamphetamine which leads him into sexual encounters, parties and distance from his family. Another book entitled Norwegian Wood was reportedly required for high school sophomores at the school. The students would read in that particular work at least one account of a lesbian encounter between a 13-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman, according to New Jersey-based Gloucester County Times.

Fox reports that a panel made up of teachers, librarians and school administrators created the summer reading list which was then approved by the area board of education. The summer reading curriculum has changed throughout the years at many schools, as classics are abandoned for newer, more cutting-edge books that districts hope will interest students more. But many are left wondering if abandoning Orwellian warnings and historical accounts for popular culture in the English classroom is of benefit to students at all.

Following backlash from parents, the Monroe Township school district elected to remove the risqué novels from its required reading list.

I think the educators at the Monroe Township school district are just trying to do their job. It seems the voters in this school district wanted this. But the fickled American voters just keep changing their minds. First they want their children to read more “open” (heh heh ! like that word ?) “literary works” and then later on they want “more wholesome” books .. These voters just can’t make up their minds !!!

Obama was elected President … there is an example of the intelligence of the American voter, I rest my case.

The same thing probably happened in Monroe. The Voters voted in a bunch of sexual deviants – because they were shamed into voting “politically correct”. Then “when their bed was made” or they “started reaping what they sowed” they had a change of mind …

Anyhow, if the parents were so moronic to vote these sexual deviants into office, how much smarter could the children be ? Doesn’t dumb biologically/socially produce dumber ?

    Hey, that’s my half-educated opinion – I’m a simian.

    • home boy

the article didn’t mention anything about the area voters. this was all thought up by our wonderful educators. if this is what the superintendent has to do to get kids to read , he needs to be fired along with other teachers and school board. kids need to have their mind developed by the right people who care more about the child’s well being than sex. where have people’s morals gone? this is not education. if you think this is okay for your child then may the school should offer porn movies then they would not have to read at all. they will learn by example. if parents weren’t so wrapped up in their jobs they should take their kids out of this school and let the state loose federal aid and then maybe something would be done. i would like to hear gov christy’s thoughts on this topic.

      • mj

        home boy, I totally agree!

  • Karolyn

Reading a book like “Tweak” just might help to stop some students from abusing drugs. Too much sheltering is harmful; however no one should be required in high school to read something that is truly offensive to them. As far as reading about homosexuality, it is a part of everyday life in the world; and as such, there is no reason kids shouldn’t be exposed to it. It might help to alleviate the bullying and hatred that goes on in school and beyond. No book will turn a kid gay! Actually, the more resistance parents might show against something, the more they will push their kids to be interested in that subject.

    • libertytrain

I’d rather they read unedited Mark Twain. And Karolyn, while I don’t always disagree with you. You don’t have kids, and I promise you what you think now and what you think when you have your children is two different things. I’ve yet to know anyone of any education level or profession that understands what it’s like to be a parent if they have never had and raised kids.

      • TML

How bout you attack the argument instead of the person, eh? Her not having children has no implications of not being able to make a sound moral judgement on the issue.

She a made acouple of points that are spot-on… “Too much sheltering is harmful; however no one should be required in high school to read something that is truly offensive to them. … … No book will turn a kid gay! Actually, the more resistance parents might show against something, the more they will push their kids to be interested in that subject.”

        • crystal

WRONG!!! You obviously don’t have children either. I have yet to meet an individual who could make a sound decision on anything when they have not had the experience of said topic.

Politically correct individuals have lowered the standards in our school system. Taking the education system and making it one big government department (DOE), was one of this nation’s largest mistakes. Curriculum should be based on educating kids not indoctrinating them into filth.

          • TML

“You obviously don’t have children either.”

I have 5 children. Want to make anymore ignorant assumptions?

          • crystal

TML, if you have 5 children, God help us.

          • TML

Wow… talk about trash… you are the worst sort.

        • libertytrain

I didn’t attack Karolyn. That you got an attack out of what I said is very sad.

          • TML

What I meant was that you ‘argued’ the idea that she doesn’t have children, rather than addressing what she had to say, as a way of trying to discredit her position. That is a logical fallacy called “Argumentum ad hominem” – the error of attacking the character or motives of a person who has stated an idea, rather than the idea itself.

          • libertytrain

you are creating something that didn’t exist – that’s called making much ado about nothing.

        • Greg

          How would you know, fool!

        • http://naver samurai

You talk about a book not turning kids gay and parental resistance, but if you have 5 kids, then you have already messed up. I have 4 kids (3 sons and 1 daughter) and they would never even think about reading such moronic trash. My kids would rather read science, history, or the Bible. The last one you can never go wrong with. Parental resistance doesn’t necessarily push children to do the opposite if you know how to use it properly. My children know where their mother and I stand on things and have never crossed any lines yet. If you ask them about today’s schools, gays, atheists, etc., you may be surprised at the answers you get. All my kids are level headed and have their feet planted firmly on the ground. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY! 하나님과 국가 대 한!

    • Dick

      Karolyn
Homosexuality is not part of ‘everyday’ life. The small percentage of those who practice homosexual acts and life styles have pushed the idea that it is normal. Adultery and fornication has become much more a part of everyday life.
Those who still believe and try to act in a traditional moral life styles find exposure to ‘immoral’ concepts inherently uncomfortable. Sort of a negative gut reaction. Especially to homosexuality.

      • crystal

You’re absolutely correct. Too bad the school district didn’t do it the Asian way. Study a math book before taking it in the next semester.

Wonder why American kids are behind. We no longer teach math, reading, and writing. Too busy socializing kids into filth.

        • Christin

          crystal,

          AMEN!

Kids are in school to LEARN SKILLS in:

          *Reading Comprehension,
          *Critical Thinking and Problem Solving,
          *Mathematics,
*History… to understand people, societies, governments, and know what has worked and failed
*Science… to understand nature’s laws, and
*English and Writing (spelling and handwriting) to be able to communicate proficiently on paper or a computer…

to get an occupation when they grow up…
(in the olden days the kids went to school to learn to read the Bible!)

… NOT teach our kids how to take drugs, be addicted or have a sexual relationship, especially one that is deviant from God’s.

This school’s reading list was nothing short of PATHETIC.
And there are many more school’s who have done the SAME, better check yours!

It is NOT the school’s job to teach those things, but the PARENTS, if they so wish…
I did NOT wish to, but because of our amoral society and biased TV, I have had to address some of those issues already… and they will learn My Moral Values that come from the Word of God, not our sinful society’s.

          • http://naver samurai

Good posts Dick, Crystal, and Christin, fellow patriots. Keep up the good fight and good to hear from you all again. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

speaking of bullying. Two years ago a group of neighborhood teenagers who were proud of being homosexual and bisexual paraded up and down in front of my house ( I lived on a gravel road in a remote area), all because I didn’t want my teenage daughter to attend a Baptist church camp that they would be attending. These were not kids that normally attend the church, but who were looking for a free week of camping on the church members. I wouldn’t have minded them going except they were only wanting to go to push their gay agenda. My daughter was 14 and there was a 17 year old girl who was telling other people that she was in love with my daughter. I protested at church but to no avail. Of course my daughther shedded tons of tears because she wanted to go to camp. I gave in with assurance from one of the counselors that she would keep the girl away from my daughter. Outcome of the ordeal is that the gay kids wore their gay symbols at camp and many of the kids are now practicing homosexuals. Sad. Fortunately me standing my ground with my daughter saved her she is totally attracted toboys. It was a real struggle to keep your child from such strong peer pressure. She says many of her guy friends are gay or bisexual, there is just not many straight boys around anymore. Many of these boys seem very depressed and have even attempted suicide. Books about using drugs and experimenting with sex have no place in the school room or in our childrens hands it only glamorizes it. Books feed the brain do not feed it garbage.

      • crystal

Where do you live where a church has a homosexual agenda at summer camp. My son just came back from summer camp and he didn’t have any of that crap. Change churches. If your church doesn’t follow God’s laws, then it’s not a church. I also don’t know where there aren’t a lot of straight boys. Do you live in the Bay Area of San Francisco?

      • Christin

        Rose,

I am so sorry about what you had to go through with your daughter.
You are so right… peer pressure is rough for kids and glamorizing drugs or sex, even homosexual sex, especially when it comes from an authority figure like a Teacher in school who is requiring this book be read in class is just TOO MUCH for our youth… we need to be vigilant! Teach our kids the TRUTH and help them to Stand with Courage for that which is Right or to come to us, their parents, for help.

    • crystal

Karolyn, don’t have children. Do us all a favor and don’t have children.

      • TML

That is completely uncalled for. How bout you do us all a favor and STFU

        • crystal

You go to Hell. I can smell the stench of your opinions permeating all over this board. If we don’t want your type around our children, that’s exactly what we mean.

          • TML

            “Go to Hell”

LOL… grow up. Do us all a favor and don’t have anymore kids.

          • crystal

            TML, you’re trash.

          • eddie47d

You’re remarks against Karolyn are uncalled for Cyrstal.Be kind!

          • Robert Smith

Crystal says: “You go to Hell.”

            How christian of you, Crystal.

Rob the troll is at it again. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

        • Greg

Did you actually get involved in a fight that wasn’t directed at you?

        • http://naver samurai

Your language was uncalled for, moron. That is not the way a man speaks to a lady, even if he disagrees with what she has said. Crystal I think, from prior posts of hers, Karolyn is too old to have children and never wanted to have any during her lifetime. Edduh and Robert “Butthead” Smith, why did you guys jump into the frey that was none of your business? Robert, I’ve known people who have the worst mouths, but they were not Christian. Just take your troll arse on up off the site and be a good little boy and go play in the street. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY! 하나님과 국가 대 한!

      • Palin12

        chyrstal,
don’t worry….Karolyn is even older than Hillary. Unless she’s trying to make the Guiness Book.

        • TML

Yeah, people like you and crystal exhibit good morals, as we can see here.

          • libertytrain

good grief. Are you following people just to insult them?

          • crystal

            Pathetic!

          • TML

Usually I insult nobody… but in this case; just trying to give them what they dish out. Pathetic they can’t take their own medicine.

          • Greg

You need to quit man. You sound extremely foolish. Crystal is absolutely correct.

          • http://naver samurai

TML why don’t you take some of your own advise and go away. Your beginning to sound like a little lib troll to me and the smell of crap reaks from your posts. Remember, what ye sow so shall ye wreap. You have sown the seeds of hate and discontent and now you are wreaping what you have sown. I’ll make sure you wreap the full measure due you, understand? Let’s have debate and not what is currently going on, understand me boy? Hmmm? If you are a good and responsible parent, you won’t let your kids read these works of trash. If you let them, then that shows what kind of parent you really are. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY! 하나님 하고 나라를 위해서!

    • SmartAlice

All I want to say to you about your post is that you are an absolute IDIOT. It’s because of these pervasive ideas that our society has degenerated the way it has. Karolyn I can honestly say this time that you absolutely disgust me. I pity your children.

    • http://gunner689 gunner689

The more something is portrayed as socially acceptable the easier it is for impresionable people, like children, to become involved in.
Since Social Progressives, whose goal is to destroy America’s morals and traditional values, and will never stop; what is their next agenda. Will it be promoting pedophilia, beastiality, incest, or some other abhorant deviant behavior ?

      • Sonja

You are so RIGHT, it is disgusting & outrageous that this sexual perversion is being pushed onto our younger generation, they are trying their best to turn America into a “Sodom & Gomarrah” I thank God everyday that my children are grown & know if they have children, their children WOULD NOT be in a public school. I pray everyday that God will protect our younger generation from this evil works of SATAN & Obama.

    • Dale on the left coast

The Heterophobes are busy “Recruiting” in the public schools . . . since No One is born that way . . . it is a Learned Phenom . . . so get them young.
Remember in the late 70′s the same sex community in San Fran was giving Bath house/gym Memberships to High School boys . . . I guess they just wanted them to be healthy. Local Govt banned this when the Aids epidemic broke out in the early 80′s.

    • Bob from SoCal

Going to Hell in a dumbed down hand basket.

    • http://gunner689 gunner689

Homos may be an everyday part of your life but most of the rest of us try to avoid them. while tolerant, we also recognize them as sexual deviants and don’t want our children exposed to their deviancy. No matter how loud or how long you shout it, being a homo is not normal and is unacceptable, especially in school.

    • TML

Apparently, what everyone has a problem with are your comments on homosexuality. These homophobic personalities utterly cringe at any mention of such action in schools, and would rather err on the side of sheltering their children from the world, rather than teaching them to question everything they read, everything they hear, everything they see…and how to decipher right from wrong, and trust their own judgments. Children are NOT impressionable to become involved in something just because it is portrayed as socially acceptable, if you teach them how not to be. This lack of ability, or negligence, of parental teaching to their children is what truly destroys the morals and values of this country.

To those I would ask… Should we also censor classroom versions of Alexander the Great, simply because you think him being bisexual was wrong, or might make you child susceptible to becoming the same? It’s ridiculous.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that everything is appropriate, since some things are better taught by parents than by schools… or, example, a book that is specifically targeted at ‘teaching’ homosexuality, I don’t feel is appropriate.

The book on methamphetamine, in my opinion, is merely an attempt at a fear based deterrent. It could be no better than any other falsified propaganda such as “meth mouth”… designed to scare people… when in fact, it only fills their head full of falshoods. Knowing the truth about the drug actually helps people who are on it, to give it up… not by fear, but by knowledge. I believe the same to be true about all aspect of life.

      • libertytrain

Apparently TML really, really needs to create a fictional novelette in order to satisfy some odd craving for a unique reality – unique unto itself – odd.

        • TML

Really? How so? You didn’t actually point out anything specifically that you disagree with, so… Don’t just make some wild claim that doesn’t even seem remotely connected to what I said… tell me what makes you think that and lets converse about it without insult. Can you do that?

          • libertytrain

            read your first paragraph above.

          • TML

            I didn’t only read it… I wrote it.

Telling me to read it doesn’t really explain much.

          • libertytrain

sorry, you are beyond any help if you don’t understand what you wrote – wild claims and accusations toward “everyone” —- go back to writing your novelette

          • TML

LoL… I understand what I wrote perectly. And I am prepared to argue my case that I am correct… I have plenty more experience in this area, than most people, if you would like to divulge what you don’t agree with. Otherwise, continue with your meaningless comments.

          • http://naver samurai

You are right Libertytrain and TML is wrong. He says he has 5 kids and says that they are not impressionable by what is called acceptable is a moronic assumption. It’s all part of peer pressure, being immature, and parents not taking a stand for what is moral, ethical, and acceptable in our society. I can tell you the God and Jesus doesn’t approve of this trash and neither should you. 5 kids my arse. Novel? You don’t sound competant enough to write one to me. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

      • Greg

You’re right. Your homosexual lifestyle is disgusting to the board. You act like a little whiney sissy. Homosexuality is completely disgusting. Forcing it on school kids takes it to a whole new level. Let’s legislate what people don’t want.

        • http://naver samurai

He does sound like a 69 rump ranger. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • s c

K and s, you are exactly why we have to abort the Department of Non-Education. You are typical of those who did little or nothing while you were in the classroom(s). You put very little effort into your non-education, and man, does it show.
You belong to that most peculiar group of wannabe dingbats who will try anything once, you see no reason to think about things before they’re implemented, and then you dare to complain about the rest of society when they finally see through the crap you call ‘progress.’ Both of you should be living in Russia. I don’t say that to be vindictive. You need to be there so you can take notes, and tell us (via letters) why you can finally understand the difference between theory and FACT.
Way to go, New Jersey. I didn’t think you were that smart.

    • crystal

I’m glad the parents stood up on this one. So many times people just throw their collective hands in the air and let liberals destroy their children.

  • eddie47d

No explicit sexual acts whether written or in pictures should be in any classroom. Sex Education should be encouraged in learning about the human body and it’s functions. This should be done from at least 4th grade until high school graduation. Beyond that leave the kinky stuff to the voyageurs in college. Sex/drug education should teach respect for the human body and not something to be exploited by normalizing orgies or making it seem like you need drugs to get a sex high. The effects of Meth should certainly be discussed but not with a book like Tweak. There are plenty of authors and movies makers out there ready to shock and downgrade every aspect of life but that doesn’t mean we have to accept their version.

    • crystal

Also, a lot of parents make the mistake of letting outsiders teach their children these topics. Parents really need to get involved in the education of their kids. Don’t leave it up to someone else. Volunteer in the classrooms. It is legal to go to a school without notice to check up on things. I’ve done this a few times and caught a few teachers doing the wrong things. We definitely need more parent involvement. I’ve had many conversations with my son and purchased books on these topics for those discussions. “Tweak” wasn’t one of them.

    • Jay

I can totally except your statement eddie, just plain common sense. It also reveals you have a heart for children. Well said!

    • http://naver samurai

OMG! I actually agree with you on this one! Good post! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • TML

“Who will edit the books listed on New Jersey’s Monroe Township school district’s required reading list?”

Indeed… who gets to decide what is “class-room friendly” and what is not. Honestly, if you feel like you have to remove language from a book, censoring the message, don’t include the book in your list of reading material. Kids are smart, they can handle it… stop dumbing them down.

    • http://naver samurai

I got an idea. How about we remove this trash and improve our kids intelligence and morals by having the Bible in our school libraries? That would be a great idea. No one would disapprove of the Bible, except some wack job. FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • http://personalliberty.com fedup

I have to agree with the simian. When we become so “politically correct” that we feel we must vote in sexual deviants and crooks and the like, then this is exactly what we get.
Am I completely against schools ‘banning’ these books? Tough question, because what I believe may not be what everyone believes. The article didn’t state what age kids would be reading these books, but with that kind of content, it should definitely be high school age material.
With that being said, if these books are allowed, how can editing Mark Twain be justified?

    • crystal

      Exactly.

    • libertytrain

I think even Sam Clemens would be flipping in his grave at the stupidity of it all.

Good post! FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

  • JDH

I would rather see the works of Samuel Clements,Caucer, and William Shakerspear taught in the schoos than this garbage. The only argument against Clements is that he made a lot of the use of the “n” word, while Shakespear and Chaucer are considered too difficult and too boring for the little darlings to understand(translation: they are not politically correctand the teacher isn’t smart enough to understand them) Seems like teachers today would rather tintilate than educate, and their unions don’t seem to want teachers to actually do something to earn their pay-just keep those union dues coming in. Before I get lynched. let me say I support and salute those few real teachers that are still out there truly trying to do the job they were hired to do.

    • independant thinker

“The only argument against Clements is that he made a lot of the use of the “n” word,…”

True but he was using the vernacular of the times. If you want to really hear that word used spitefully you need to hear a black talking about another black they consider trash.

  • duped again

The whole situation with radical homosexual’s attacks on Christianity and democracy makes me think of situation when a rapist kidnaps a woman or a child. To give in the rapist the woman or child does not save herself since the rapists usually murder their victims but by screaming and fighting they may get of the grip and save themselves. We all should be screaming the truth to save our democracy and maybe we will have a chance to save ourselves. That is how we all should fight – speak the truth and vote. You can vote for people running for local school boards and make them represent the will of people.

    • crystal

One big problem is that a lot of people who are voting for school boards don’t research who they’re voting for. They do the same thing with judges. People have to get REAL serious about who they are voting for. It seems they only really pay attention to the Presidential, Governor, and maybe the Mayoral elections. It’s the detailed elections we are finding that matter to our everyday lives also.

      • duped again

You are right – I am myself guilty of what you say. Only about 3-4 years ago I had my “enough is enough” moment. One problem I see is that as we raise our children and take care of families we do not have much time for political activism (as oposed to those who do not have children). One solution is to find good independent source of information (individuals or institutions) which provides information on candidates and where they stand.

Incidently, did you see that a group of psychologists are trying to get the pediphiles off the “insane” list now? “They are doing just what is natural.”

      • eddie47d

Because they shouldn’t be on any “insane” list. There is a guy who lives in a group home less than a mile from my house who killed 2 priests because God told him to. He claimed insanity and only served 5 years and is now on 2 years probation. Save the insane defense for the truly insane.

A persistent mental disorder or derangement, disease, defect of reason as a result of mental illness, or condition of the mind that renders one unable to understand the nature of a criminal act or the fact that it is wrong.

Pedophiles know that what they are doing is wrong… they are capable of understanding the same as a rapist understands what he is doing.

Removing them from such a list isn’t asserting that they are “doing just what is natural”… quite the opposite really.

          • TML

That first paragraph is a definition of insanity.

To answer directly… pedophilia is the rape of a minor, not insanity, as I tried to describe above.

          • Jay

I wonder if the minor would consider the pedophile insane?

“Pedophiles know that what they are doing is wrong…”

If that is true then why do we have to have treatment programs that attempt getting them to recognize the unacceptability of their actions and why do they have to register as sex offenders?

          • TML

I suppose such treatment programs could be a result of believing they are actually “insane”. I know where peoples ideas of calling them insane comes from, trust me on that, and it is purely an emotional conviction to say such. But make no mistake, pedophiles know exactly what they are doing, why they are doing it, and try desperately not to get caught… sometimes even threatening the child if they were to tell. That is a cold and calculated act, to say the least… and while you can have any emotional conviction you want… allowing these dogs to plea insanity for a lighter sentence is counter productive to the justice we all want to be given to these monsters.

As for as why we have them register as sexual offenders… well, because they are sexual offenders.

Why are we turning every thing over to the gov.? Most of this stuff
is for the parents to control….not the gov. or the schools. Pretty soon all our children will be sent to state schools and we will visit them on weekends…..like in Russia!

Read the books schools want your kids to read, you will be shocked by the anti-american spin in many of them. My little cousin was given a history book to read (not a textbook)that I read and found to be anti-american and anti-white people. The whole book kept harping on how evil americans killed indians, slavery and even mexican separatist propaganda regarding the southwest in it. I have no problem with history books telling the facts whether they be good or bad but the amount of spin in this book with it’s amount of anti-american propaganda in it was baffling.

Our kids are being brainwashed by propaganda you might not agree with, homeschooling is the way to go.

I agree that we all should read the books given the children. I learned, for example, that the military lost the war in Vietnam but the “heroic” Senators under H.H.Humphrey managed to save them by forming a truce to pull them out before they were overrun and slaughtered by the North Vietnamese. I didn’t realize just how close to dying while there that I was! (NOT!)

THere are some books that just shouldn’t be allowed on school campuses. Anything that encourages sex, drug use, or crime should be forbidden. They can study that on their own time.

    • 45caliber

And I absolutely LOVE books! I have over 30,000 of them at home and I’ve read nearly all of them.

Schools need to get back to what they are suppose to be doing which is teaching reading, writing and arithmetic taught to the tune of a hickory stick! The schools are to enthralled with socializing and teaching our children that its OK to not be able to read or do math we will let you graduate high school anyway. Our children must be taught that they must be held accountable for their own actions. Its not mommy or daddy or whomevers fault if they don’t do the work and learn the materials needed to get a job in the future. The schools have no right to instruct a child to read anything that is morally wrong or politically or religiously controversial! PERIOD! I stood up when schools tried that with my kids and it is ever parents duty to protect their children from this kind of crap!
