San Francisco Bans Toys With Fast Foods

November 25, 2010 by

San Francisco Bans Toys With Fast FoodsHamburger meals won’t be so “Happy” for kids in San Francisco after the city’s Board of Supervisors voted to override Mayor Gavin Newsom’s veto of a city ban on toys being included in fast-food children’s meals that fail to meet health standards.

The Board overrode Newsom’s veto by a vote of 8-3, the same vote that passed the ban in the first place, according to the Silicon Valley Mercury News.

The legislation, sponsored by Supervisor Eric Mar, will prevent toys from being included in children’s meals that exceed 600 calories and lack fruit or vegetables, the Mercury News reported. It will go into effect in December 2011.

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said he is proud of the board for "pushing the envelope" with the legislation, which he said has spurred discussion nationwide on the issue of healthy fast-food options and what role local governments should have. But Newsom disagreed. When he vetoed the bill in early November he called it an "unwise and unprecedented government intrusion into parental responsibilities and private choices," according to the news source.

Not a surprise at all. The same city that can take credit for keeping the Three Stooges in office, Pelosi, Boxer and Feindyck, certainly knows what’s best for little Bobby and Pollyanna. No surprise kiddies…we’ll just take a trip across the Golden Gate to get Bobby his Transformers and a cute Hello Kitty for Pollyanna and screw San Francisco.

    • JeffH

When Mayor and Lt. Governor elect Gavin Newsom saying it is an “unwise and unprecedented government intrusion into parental responsibilities and private choices” , don’t trust him for a second as that was purely political doublespeak and posturing. He’s got his eyes on the prize, to be the next governor of California if there still is a California left to govern.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      JeffH,
Wasn’t this the self same city that wouldn’t allow returning middle eastern vets dock at their worthless city??? Far as I’m concerned, the whole city can go to hell in a hand basket!!!

    • Steve

OMG I was born in this circus freak show city…..1 have a business here or else my a– would of been gone a long time ago…keep an eye on what these socialist communist I know better then you do ultra left politicians do because if the left in this country is not pushed back this type of “San Francisco control” could happen in your cities….they preach to Arizona but they can’t balance their buget…. they are always trying to impose new taxes and fees on all of us and tell us how to live our lives…they ban cigarettes in stores like walmart but they allow marijuana “stores” to be free to sell to anyone all through out the city….they should not be allowed to control pets like dogs and cats let alone humans…..

  • Mick

Hell, pretty soon the San-Francisco loons will be requesting for you to get a permit to take a piss.
California seem to breed nuts and getting worse………

You don’t have to refer to a dictionary to find out how to spell “stupid,” San Francisco does it for you. If this law is so great, why doesn’t it go into effect right now, why wait until December, 2011? At the rate the Progressives are destroying everything, we may not be around in December, 2011, to care who eats what and why.

Clifton ,,,The leftists are determine to mold this society into their image, they have managed in the course of the past few decades to educate our kids to be uneducated so they could easier control their minds , the problem is: its been working…
You Liberals better grow a pair and start realizing that the population paying for all of the hand out programs will soon be gone, they’re not getting any younger, who will pay for your crap then? or will you have to kill each other in order to survive….?

      • Bob Wire

“The leftists are determine to mold this society into their image,”

I don’t see that as being unique to the left but to the right as well.

It as if many of you worry about “who’s boot is own your neck.

I don’t like anyone’s boot on my neck.

The right as been just a guilt of personal intrusions.

“Terri Schiavo collapsed in her St. Petersburg, Florida home in full cardiac arrest on February 25, 1990. She suffered massive brain damage due to lack of oxygen and, after two and a half months in a coma, her diagnosis was elevated to vegetative state. For the next few years doctors attempted physical therapy and other experimental therapy, hoping to return Terri to a state of awareness.

In 1998 Terri’s husband, Michael, petitioned the Sixth Circuit Court of Florida (Pinellas County), to remove her feeding tube pursuant to Florida Statutes Section 765.401(3).[1] He was opposed by Terri’s parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, who argued that Terri was conscious. The court determined that Terri would not wish to continue life-prolonging measures,[2] and on April 24, 2001 Terri’s feeding tube was removed for the first time, only to be reinserted several days later.

On February 25, 2005, a Pinellas County judge ordered the removal of Terri’s feeding tube. Several appeals and federal government intervention followed, which included U.S. President George W. Bush returning to Washington D.C. from a vacation to sign legislation designed to keep Terri alive. After all attempts at appeals through the federal court system were unsuccessful, Terri’s feeding tube was disconnected on March 18, 2005. Terri died at a Pinellas Park hospice on March 31.

In all, the Schiavo case involved 14 appeals and numerous motions, petitions, and hearings in the Florida courts; five suits in federal district court; Florida legislation struck down by the Supreme Court of Florida; a subpoena by a congressional committee to qualify Terri for witness protection; federal legislation (the Palm Sunday Compromise); and four denials of certiorari from the Supreme Court of the United States.[3] The case also spurred highly visible activism from the pro-life movement and disability rights groups.”

would you like another example of the “right” overstepping their bounds?

and there you were getting all excited about a “Happy Meal” lost to the left.

        • http://marcum@wildblue.net coal miner

          Bob Wire,

I think San Frncisco Ban sucks. Its crap.Parents don’t have to stop at these places. You got to remember these people are in business for themselves.
Are we so stupid, that we have to be led arond by the hand?We can make our own choices. Most people eat at the fast foods places maybe once a week or once a month.Let parents decide, not big brother.

Except the big problem with this law is that:

          1) 99% of “children’s meals” at fast food chains already meet the standards set out by the law… so it would be a useless law. It would ban double cheese burger happy meals, but all other types of happy meals are under 600 calories.

2)The banning of the toy would result in MORE obesity, as you pay $0.99 for the toy, where as you can get an ADULT value meal for $1 less, and it has A LOT more food (almost double the calories)

This law does nothing at all at best, and at worse it exasterbates the problem… where kids will get McDouble value meals(1,200 calories) rather than cheeseburger happy meals(700 calories).

        • Vigilant

I figured some liberal would come in and actually support the decision, and Bob Wire did it with his egregiously poor example that was no example at all.

Apples and oranges, my friend. The Schiavo case was one (1) isolated example of an attempt, on religious grounds, to stop euthanasia. I’m sure you could find other isolated examples, but multiple attempts (all successful, as far as I can see) at state level to tell us how to live and regulate our lives are a different animal.

What I eat, smoke, drink, or otherwise do with my body is my own business and nobody else’s, least of all the government’s, as long as it does no harm to anyone else. Can you imagine the government of 1789, or 1889, or 1999 trying to pull this sh*t?

“The right as been just as guilty of personal intrusions.”

Not by a LONG shot. And I challenge you to provide ONE example of how governments, state, local and Federal, have done anything along these lines that could possibly be conceived as applicarion of conservative principles. And don’t hand me that hatred-of-the-rich crap, or the faux argument of “corporate welfare” (which curtails my freedoms in no way), just take a look at the Federal Budget and see who’s REALLY getting the welfare in this country.

And I don’t believe for a minute that the fine councilmen of SF give a damn about kids. They merely want to tweak the tail of a corporate giant.

          • libertytrain

I have to agree with you – Poor Terri had a sleazy husband — shacked up with another woman, fathered a kid or so, he had to do the right thing, kill Terry so he could make a decent woman of the other broad. I don’t see this one as a right vs. left at all. From my point of view – Terri’s husband should have been the one put to sleep.

          • Bob Wire

No it’s not apples and oranges ! It’s apples and watermelons!

Whiles holding little claim to being a liberal ~ I see government intrusion in whomsoever court yard it might land.

The Christian Right unnecessary prolong this poor woman suffering in an attempt to make a point. Willing to go far beyond interfering with peoples eating preferences.

Both are completely absurd intrusion but one actually sets government up as a “GOD”. Government MADE poor Terri lie on her death bed FOUR years. Was this for Terri’s sake? if so, please explain how?

Thanks for the banter Vigilant, but you have failed to make a case or paint me as a liberal. You are so easy to bait and bring out your extreme views.

Clifton, I plan to be around in Dec. 2011, I’m not letting these a$$ holes push me around, I’m taking a few with me.

Bob Wire,,,If you, A liberal can see three mistakes reinforces the facts that I must be right ,,,,,,,,,
Where did you see the word “stupid ” in my post ??

      • Bob Wire

one ;Clifton was not expressing a liberal bias,

two ;Liberals have a yard of D1ck and a bucket full of balls, can ride and rope and shoot with the best of them

three; the “Right” is equal guilty of attempting to mold society to their liking if not more so in matter of greater importance then just “Happy Meals” ~ The “Right” has lead the way in “Welfare for the Wealthy”, public giveaways to the affluent and strapping every tax payer with the burden.

and you are correct , you never called anyone stupid, and I never said you did.

I said , stupid is where you find it.

        • Bob Wire

sorry, I’m feeling frisky ~ and trying to work up a good appetite this morning.

I hate sweeping statements and labels and looking for a good fight.

          Barb Wire,
“Stupid is where you find it”. True, It’s just that we find an inordinate amount of stupid connected to liberal progressives!! And I assure you that just as many if not MORE conservatives have a bucket full of ba!!s!!! We can shoot em’ up with the best of them as well!!

  • THIRDPARTY

IT’S funny how the liberals are like socialist, controlling in the name of kids, what a false reality they live in.Maybe they should ban taking it the poop shoot first, that’s a much more harmful activity then eating a burger, and playing with some toys.

    • Bob Wire

don’t make good sense does it?

I wonder what the “grounds” were for this,~ this nonsense ?

how was it argued and justified?

        JimH,
And you do the same, friend!!!

  • da norseman

Don’t forget that San Francisco is its own country now. It’s a tiny Marxist country – 231.92 square miles of it – called the “Land of Fruits and Nuts” and you are already outside the United States of America. It’s closest sister city? Sombertown! That old drab town on the old Christmas animated special “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” where toys are hereby banned and the common people in both cities act the same! Surprisingly you still don’t need a passport to go there. All McDonald’s outlets there will be offering children the “Unhappy Meal” filled with celery sticks, broccoli, carrots and brussel sprouts – no hamburger or fries, LOL!!!

One would now have to take the short trip to a McDonald’s in Daly City to make their children happy!!!

  • Bob Wire

LOL! California, where the women are women and the men are too!

? Hmm? I take their word for it.

Kids love Mc Donald’s ! I’ve accept it.

It the toys and the playground ~ surely not the food! the stuff taste like cardboard.

If you want to make the tiny ones happy ~that’s the place to go.

    You can’t fight the river.

To tell you straight up ~ I despise local government much more then the FED as they are constantly in your face about something.

hell ! they come up and knock on your door! demand you comply! fine you if you don’t. ~ Take your property, take your liberty, take your freedom, take your life , all though “due process” if for no other reason then “Contempt” or “Willful Disobedience” and you will find few to offer you help with your defense.

I’ve learned to fly under the radar, cast no shadow, show no wealth. If you cast an image of being successful, they want a piece or they will figure a ways to make what you do cost more.

That’s just the way things have grow to be.

    • da norseman

“LOL! California, where the women are women and the men are too!”

THAT one REALLY got me floored!!! Thanks!! LOL!

  • RAPTOR- California

LMAO They ban kids toys in Happy Meals but they allow open sex by gays in public. Typical of the “Granola City,” fruits, nuts & flakes. Ya think their priorities are a little messed up?!

    • http://?? Joe H.

      Raptor,
you mean you think they actually HAVE priorities???

  • GREY WOLF

I’m happy to have grown up in the 1950′s when you couldn’t wait to finish that box of Cracker Jacks & find the prize. Or getting that first pack of the season baseball cards, 5 total plus gum for a whole nickel! Personally, I think if these people ever get their way, children will become nothing more than state property.

  • circle8

Maybe San Fran should pass a law that would help society. How about a law that would outlaw people doing oral sex on public streets, in parades or other public places in front of citizens including children. SFO used to be a nice city but now it is just another california toilet.

  • home boy

maybe , if parents were more responsible and really cared about their children, this kind of crap would never be considered.

    • http://?? Joe H.

      home boy,
even if we all raised super kids they would still do this as they have a NEED to “rule”!!

      • home boy

        how true

  • smithington

Check out a documentary called, “Terrorstorm: A History of Government Sponsored Terrorism”, on Netflix

  • Earl, QUEENS, NY

Then again, what can you expect from a city which re-elects America’s most despised woman (Nancy Pelousy) with 80% of the districts vote?? Even higher than the 73% Pelousy got in 2008!! …..First it was the tobacco industry. Now they’ve added the fast food industry. And as always, they pretend to care about children. LOL!! Ask yourself – although fast food or tobacco products may cause illness later in their adult years, how many kids under the age of 20 die of these products?? If these liberal statists/control freaks really care about kids, why don’t they lash out at the abortion industry?? Last figure I saw, abortions (among unborn children) outnumber tobacco deaths (among adults) 2 to 1. And what about the millions of kids who die worldwide of malaria?? Most of these deaths could be prevented if our leaders would stop catering to the environmentalist wacko fascists and lift the ban on DDT!!

  • da norseman

San Francisco was the place to go for our military servicemen back during the Second World War awaiting deployment. G.I.s were treated with respect and dignity. The people in the City were friendly and made our servicemen feel right at home. That was back then! The City was beautiful and the nightlife was lively.

San Francisco today if you are in the military: dishonest disrespectful people who hate our military or seeing anyone in uniform; they spit on you and make rude comments by calling you a “baby killer”. The City has become a virtual cesspool filled with an ever-increasing homeless population, aggressive panhandlers, militant homosexual and trans-sexual activities and parades, and drug abusers. It has become the melting pot and the cradle of the radical progressive movement. It is a pigsty!!!

What was once a beauty has certainly turned into a toilet today with the filth and garbage that’s there now. Only very few pockets in the city remain untouched by all this filth. I have noticed the constant changes during the last forty years of my many visits there, especially over the last twenty years, which has made this city one of the most undesirable places due to the neglect of corrupt city officials who have no plans to clean it up and they don’t even want to be bothered with it.

The way it is continuing with the re-election of corrupt city officials that make San Francisco the way it is. There is no turning back to the granduer that it once was more than sixty years ago! It has already reached and passed the point of no return.

  • CJM

As an adult and a parent, I do not need the food police and their appointed nannies to tell me how to feed my children. Other products include freebies for the small-frye; do they wish to ban all cereals that include the toys and trinkets in the box—how would we get along without the crackerjax? NYC now bans any food sold in restaurants that is not fat free; do they not understand that the natural flavor of many foods comes from the fat content? Eating fat free foods is like eating cardboard; while it may look pretty on the plate, its bland taste leaves the appetite wanting and it is nauseus as well. Mayor Newsome has it right. And by the way, just how healthy are those cocktails that Pelosi and company indulge in? Anyone see these jokers do away with their fanciful foods? This intrusion by the government at all levels is unconstitutional and is in violation of one’s personal rights. No where does the Constitution give any government the right to do business, let alone tell the people how they must live. Our laws are to protect society, not to destroy it.
