Salt, Fructose and Soft Drinks: The High Blood Pressure Axis Of Evil

Diet is a crucial component of any hypertension reduction and prevention strategy. For many patients, particularly those with diabetes or pre-diabetes, it needs to be the fundamental focus. Correcting poor food choices is the easiest way to get a handle on blood pressure and diabetes. Where food is concerned it is pretty clear which foods needs to be avoided and which foods should be center stage in your diet. Here are three of the worst food items. You should avoid them if you are at risk or have high blood pressure.

Reduce Your Salt Consumption
Salt is the archenemy of normal blood pressure. When we consume too much sodium our body retains too much water. This increase in water retention increases our overall circulatory volume, which is the load our blood vessels must handle when doing their job. Just like lifting a heavier object increases the load on our arms and strains our muscles, this fluid load increases the strain on our hearts and blood vessels. Increased strain and pressure cause hypertension.

While doing some additional research on this subject I looked into dozens of studies and articles, from the academic to the more popular. I was amazed at how many Internet writers dismissed the role of salt in raising blood pressure, given the abundance of clinical trials that clearly point to a direct connection between the two. While we know why salt causes blood pressure to rise, it is only from recent studies that scientists understand how salt adversely affects blood pressure.

Scientists from the United States and Japan have uncovered the physiological process that explains how salt raises blood pressure. According to the study, available on the University of Maryland website, it has something to do with a hormone known as ouabain that is secreted by the adrenal gland.[1]

Total sodium intake must be reduced to help reverse and prevent hypertension. The easiest way to begin reducing salt intake is to stop adding it as seasoning to foods after they have been prepared. In other words, some salt for cooking as usual but then no extra salt added at the table (or restaurant) once the food is served. Once you get used to that reduction, then you can reduce the amount of salt you use while cooking or preparing foods. What’s more, simply choosing “low salt” versions of your favorite snacks, like pretzels or chips, is another fast way to reduce salt consumption right away without completely changing your eating habits all at once… which is often the cause of failure of most diets.

Limit Your Intake Of Fructose
Fructose is a simple sugar, or monosaccharide, that is derived from fruits and vegetables. In doses that are naturally consumed while eating, unprocessed whole fruits and vegetables, fructose is safe for your body. However, in high doses like those found in processed foods and beverages, fructose has been linked to increased blood pressure. In fact, a new study finds that a diet high in fructose increases the risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure.

Over the last century processed food purveyors have begun adding more simple sugars to their products in an effort to add flavor. During this period the number of Americans suffering from high blood pressure has skyrocketed.

A study presented at the American Society of Nephrology’s 42nd Annual Meeting found that the rate of obesity has increased sharply since the development of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and that the prevalence of HFCS in processed foods may have something to do with it. It’s been reported that Americans now consume 30 percent more fructose than they did 20 years ago.

The study showed that a diet of more than 74 grams of fructose a day led to dramatic increases in risk of hypertension for those with slightly higher blood pressure. Participants who had a blood pressure level of 160/100 had an 87 percent higher risk of developing hypertension.

The adverse is also true. Wherein consuming more fructose can raise blood pressure, reducing its consumption has also been clinically proven to lower blood pressure. Results of a recent University of Colorado at Denver study suggest that hypertensive individuals may be able to naturally lower their blood pressure by consuming a diet low in added fructose.

For the current study, lead author Diana Jalal and her colleagues from the University’s Health Sciences Center recruited nearly 4,600 adults over the age of 18 and had them fill out dietary questionnaires regarding their average daily consumption of processed fruit juices, soft drinks, bakery products and candy.

After taking into account other risk factors the researchers found that individuals who consumed more than 72 grams of fructose each day were between 26 percent and 77 percent (depending upon the blood pressure threshold) more likely to be hypertensive than those who eat few foods containing added sugar.

As part of your program for reducing and preventing high blood pressure it is important to avoid consuming food high in fructose and high fructose corn syrup. While it is best to read the labels of foods before buying or consuming them, here is a list of foods that are generally found to be high in fructose:

  • Breakfast cereals.
  • Canned soups.
  • Processed cookies.
  • Processed baked goods.
  • Prepackaged sauces.
  • Many sweets.
  • Fruit snacks and juices.
  • Prepackaged gravies.
  • Diet beverages.

Consume Fewer Soft Drinks
Individuals who are looking to lower their blood pressure without taking medication may be able to do so by moderately reducing their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, according to a new study.

For the 18-month study, which was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, a research team from the Louisiana State University Health Science Center recruited 810 adults with early stage hypertension who drank an average of 11 ounces of sugary beverages each day, well below the American average of 23 daily ounces.[2]

At the end of the study, participants who reduced their soft drink intake by at least half lowered their systolic blood pressure by an average of 1.8 points and their diastolic blood pressure by 1.1 points.

"We found a direct dose-response relationship," said study leader Liwei Chen. "Individually, it was not a big reduction. But population-wise, reducing total consumption could have a huge impact."

According to background information included in the report, a three-point reduction in blood pressure can lower heart disease mortality risk by as much as 5 percent.

The correlation between lower blood pressure and reduced soft drink intake remained after accounting for weight loss and other risk factors. If ever there were more reason to stop drinking soft drinks than weight loss and chemical toxins, the ability to lower blood pressure by avoiding them is it!

    I would not be soooo hasty as to say SALT is something to avoid in one’s diet. I agree, there comes a point where TOO MUCH can be dangerous. But, the human body still needs salt.

    It’s things like ASPARTAME (other names are used here, so watch out), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, etc., that you should avoid – only use real sugar. You can review the Documentary: Sweet Misery, to learn about ASPARTAME and what it does and how it works inside the human brain. Pay attention to what they say about the human body and its reaction(s).

    I always read the labels and avoid vending machines, period.
    Items like SIMPLY LEMONADE (only four ingredients) and NATURALLY MORE (peanut butter) and STEEL CUT OATS (oatmeal) are just a few things I lean towards.

      Fructose is real sugar and doesn’ require insulin to motabalize and is used slowly, it could be just the caffine and acids in these drinks that cause the blood pressure problem

        Fructose is a natural sugar BUT the molecular shape is much different than normal sucrose; because of this fructose converts to BODY FAT with much greater ease and frequency than regular sucrose (about a 45% increase)and we ALL know what excess fat does for us; so except for raw fruit sucrose (which should be limited to about 15 grams a day) fructose and HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP (HFC) should be avoided at all costs.

        Sea salt is a good alternative for a salt *substitute*.
        As for a good sugar alternative, try using Stevia, or Agava Nectar.
        Both have a low glycemic index.
        Agava Nectar pours like honey, but not quite as thick. Stevia should be used sparingly, becuase too much can make what-ever you put it in taste bitter. I’ve been using both for years. Both can be found on some but not all supermarket shelves.
        An additional note here about floride in drinking water . My town in the North-East added chlorine to the drinking water. When they first added it,my first shower after-ward — the chlorine was so strong it made me think I was taking a shower at gym instead of at home! Chlorine can ALSO aggrevate high blood pressure. We went out and bought a water filter container that we keep in our ‘fridge. Its a pain to keep having to refill it, but until I can afford to have a plumber come out and put in a whole house water filter, it will have to do for now.

      Anthony, well said. Salt is a vital nutrient (sea salt is best). I am very tired of this substance being vilified. They need to focus on the aspartame, sucralose, high fructose corn syrup, GMO “foods”, and the elephant in the room: fluoridated water. Pretty soon they’ll create more “laws”, regulations, and such to all but ban salt. There is no end to tyranny.

        The food police are already at it, determining what our kids can and cant have to eat at schools, and soon they will be after us. They can try, but they will have to pry my morton salt canister and my snickers bar from my cold dead fingers. I use salt, but I dont abuse it. Usually, only a little on vegetable and mashed potatoes, or on slice tomatoes or boiled eggs. Other than that, not much at all. I use real sugar, and Im 52, and every blood pressure check has been good at all my physicals. Last one was 117 over 72. I dont diet, I dont use artificial sweeteners, and Ive never ate a low fat anything in my life. They can keep those chemically treated things. Me, Ill take the natural stuff, and stay healthy. And a little salt and sugar are healthy, and I will debate any doctor on this, because Ive seen it over and over in my own family, and the families of my friends.

        Dr. Wiley: I believe any blanket statement about “dietary salt” is likely to be as imprecise as there are different kinds of “salt” on supermarket and your local co-op shelves.

        1. Bleached white table salt aluminumized to prevent clumping, with iodine added. This is actually not a food, but rather a toxic chemical mixture. No surprise it raises blood pressure.

        2. Varicolored (assorted shades of brown) unrefined sea salt, mined from ancient buried sea beds, which contains iodine and dozens of trace minerals in pretty much the same ratios as contained in human blood (the subject was blood, right?). During emergency medical procedures at sea, patient blood loss has been successfully replaced with seawater. Maybe not as good as plasma, but people have survived where they probably would not.

        3. A lot of processed junk in between numbers 1 & 2, above, which food companies call “sea salt,” “kosher,” “natural,” and any other name they can dream up to make you think it’s better for you. Perhaps some of it marginally is. Distilled salt from the oceans used be a good alternative till we began filling up our seas with mercury, raw sewage, chemical run-off, and oil sludge. This is why mined sea salt, unprocessed, is your best bet.

        Real sea salt (#2) is not harmful in the quantities most people typically use salt in. There are reports that simply switching entirely to mined salt has completely normalized blood pressure within days or weeks, other things being equal (i.e., lacking unusual stress, drug or alcohol consumption, etc.).

        As for sweeteners, use organic: honey, stevia, agave nectar, maple syrup, or other unprocessed or slightly processed products of nature.

        Sodas are not a “food” either, no matter what they are sweetened with. Drink organic fruit juices for awhile and you’ll likely never go back. Many are so sweet you’ll want to dilute them.

        Follow these three dietary rules, and while you’re at it get off your ass every so often and move around. It’s a virtual guarantee your blood pressure will normalize.

      One needs to make a distinction about salt…yes, any amount of the artificially table salt is probably too much, Sea Salt is better, but has a few problems although it does have all 17 minerals, compared to table salt’s 3… We need iodine..and salt is a por way to get it, but to then cut salt, makes your iodine situation even worse!! Kelp pills are the best source of natural iodine!! for those sold into the meddical system, and are cutting out salt!! Doctors forget to tell them to do something about iodine, to the loss of their thyroid health!!!

      Nicholas when you have a problem it is best to understand the problem. Google on the internet diabetes, natural remedies, alternative remedies, and things of that nature. You have to take enough interest in diabetes and your own health to spend some time understanding the problem. Most people prefer others to solve their problems for them or simply to ignore them until it is too late. When I have a problem I always handle it by fully understanding the problem. Once you do the answers will come. It is always best to take an interest in any problem at its earliest stage. Wait too long and you get yourself into something you cannot get out of. I would say the key to problem solving is taking an interest in that problem. Most problems endure because people mostly try to ignore their problems. As with all sickness vitamins and minerals from food and poisons in varying forms play a huge role in sickness and in health. I am sorry I cannot give you the direct answer you are looking for as I have never had diabeties.

      One of the things you MUST do is to get off processed foods and get onto whole, raw foods. The answer to diabetes is NOT drugs of any sort; it’s a scam and will vastly shorten your life and destroy your health. Do not drink fluoridated water… a Berkey filter and buy the fluoride filters. The medical mafia has NO answers to what ails us and actually contributes greatly to our ills. Read, research, but stay away from the medical lies.

If anyone has gone thru and experience of HELL with the doctors that are nothing but LEGALIZED PILL PUSHERS, as I did 35 years ago, you start to look at your health in a completely different way. Each person is the only one responsible for their own health, and when you turn this over to doctors and the medical profession, you are in trouble and a life long addiction of HARMFULL DRUGS AND MEDICINE. I have seen so many people, that have done this. A neighbor lady that is younger than I am, takes massive numbers of pills, and has had so many operation, that her life is HELL. I had one doctor tell me that he HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MY HEALTH. My answer to him was to walk out of his office, and the clinic, and NEVER TO RETURN. I have gone the natural route and direction, do not take any pills. Have gone back to eating base natural foods, do not buy nor eat any processed foods. If God wanted us to put all the drugs, chemicals and foreign substances in our bodies, he would have made our bodies to accomadate those things.

They can get you back under control without taking the big pharm meds that will keep you on them for the rest of your life. The natural stuff will cure you.       I have cut back on a lot of my diabetic meds by taking 1000 units of vitamin E every night. The highest level I have had in the last month is 122. That was my own fault from eating a couple pieces of cake and a small bit of icecream at my coin club. Also get as much exercise as you can, I mean get your heart beating. don’t just count sugars in your diet, count carbs as well. I was originally given 4 glucophage a day, I now take two, I was given two glucotrol a day, I now take none. I take one actos and 20 units of lantus as well. I’m 60 years old, and my last blood pressure was 119/76. I must be doing something right. I do give a lot of credit to the vitamin E and exercise.

    There’s a huge difference in “salts”. Your body requires it but only in its natural form–unrefined sea salt. The chemical concoction in the grocery store (think Morton’s) is not balanced and is mostly sodium. In fact, by using Celtic sea salt, Himalayan salt, or something similar, you can LOWER blood pressure! Just another good reason to cook at home so you can use GOOD HEALTHY salt on your food.

      I absolutely agree. I personally use Himalayan salt. Don’t forget all of the fillers they put in commercial salt. There’s a reason it lasts forever in your cupboard!

        I’ve heard of the Himalayan “pink” sea salt, but never encountered it. I’ve used Redmond RealSalt for several years now, mined from under Jurassic volcano ash in Utah. It doesn’t just taste salty (which is almost more of an “impact sensation” than a “taste,” if that makes sense…well, to you I’m sure it does) it actually has a lighter, more delicately pleasing flavor.

        I don’t believe processing salt is for the purpose of preserving its shelf life, since the stuff I’m using is pre-human. It’s to make it “prettier” and to prevent clumping in humid weather. As in: “When it rains, it poisons.”

    Read the labels on processed foods and prepackaged items. Avoid excess consumption of anything (especially sweets and cookies)
    and your body will tell you if your eating habits are right or wrong soon enough. If you feel lousy after eating, check on what you ate and avoid it next time around.

    Simple rule:if you feel overfull or bloated don’t eat, drink a little water instaed.

    Not mentioned here is the dangerous mercury content of much of the high fructose corn syrup used in processed food & beverages. Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin which is retained by the body. Dangerous Aspartame is also being added to many processed foods & should be avoided like the plague. Also, read labels for MSG and related “natural flavors” which cause cancer. As Joyce Riley has said: Eat God’s natural foods and enjoy God’s health; eat man’s artificial chemicals & suffer from man-made diseases (like cancer, heart disease & diabetes).

    There are many studies out in the web that backs up this article. Check out this report online from the Daily Mail: “This Cynical Five-a-Day Myth: Nutrition Expert Claims We’ve All Been Duped.”
    I laugh every time I see the new commercial from the corn sugar producers trying to convince us that high fructose corn syrup is no different from cane sugar. What they conveniently forget to say is that corn SUGAR and cane sugar are chemically the same. HFCS is chemically changed to achieve the extra sweet taste and is not the same as sugar. I don’t have any horrible diseases but I do sympathize with those who do. In my opinion, the best food is the one you cook at home with fresh ingredients. I cook enough food for the week and freeze what I am not ready to serve. That way I can have a nice lunch every day. We can’t avoid all the poisons our government mandates for us to consume but, we can try to avoid as much as possible.

    Nicholas, as a type 1 diabetic for 42 years, I can tell you ever time a artifical sweetner comes out, they only work for diet controlled diabetics. When I used cyclamates in 1970 I had no problem, but experts and morons decided by testing rats, if you drank 10,000 gallons of water sweetned with it per day, you would die of kidney failure. Any artifical sweetner gives me a u[set stomack or is really hard to regulate blood sugars. I use regular sugar, it only has 4 carbs per tea heaping spoon. When i drove truck I tried furtose sweetned drinks and started to put on weigh. When I went back to regular pop I lost weight. Biggest way to stay healthy is keep moving and do something, wjeather diabetic or not. Definitely don’t listen to the wonder cures like chirorpatic cures, or all natural herb cures, massive vitamin intakes, or other voodoo cures. You are the one who knows what is going on with your health. I was told that by my family doctor when I was diagonisted as a freshman in high school. I have been in everal research studieswith my other family members at diiferent rsearch labs over the years. There are different strains of diabetic treatments in Type 1 alone. My brothers and sisters are all different grade or strains than I am. Also got diagonised at different ages. When I and my siblings and parents are long gone the tissuer samples will sill be beign replecated to study them. I still have low blood pressure and eat few vegs and fruits because my potassium and magnesum levels get to high and I can not take vitinums. Nickolas finfd a good endro and nephro doctor you trust and feel confortable with and they will keep you going good. This Year I must get a new eye exam and get some reading glasses after 9 years of no change. Just remember you are a member of the sweet blood tribe.

    ALAS! THANK YOU! A well documented report on the ‘true’ reasons behind the problem of “high blood pressure” as well as many other physical problems partly based upon the use of processed foods with all of the additives (read the labels).
    I’m not a chemist but I have used ‘iodized’ sea salt for over 30 years, and years ago I heard a presentation by one authority that one tablespoon of ‘concentrated refined’ sugar is equal to ‘one foot’ of natural sugarcane. Is it any wonder one’s body is actively rebelling!
    Having been on a lacto-vegetarian fresh food diet for over 30 years definitely affected a change in my entire physical system, but I can only verify it by the way I feel and the good results about blood pressure and overall good health during an annual physical. The medical profession is somewhat skeptical about launching a patient on a vegetarian, fresh food diet and one can tell by using common sense logic and simple research to know the reasons why. (By the way, now when I pass a meat counter in the grocery store, it smells like rotten blood! Maybe it is!)

    PEH, glad you are a vegan, leaves more beef and pork for me. I have worked in road construction with vegan and wild hickory nuts eaters. When going got physical and tough long hours, their muscle strength went out the window as well as have not any reserve back up reserve. If you are a desk jockey or a have a sedintary non physcial ob or work, limited intake of second class protein and hand fulls of supplements or vitimins will keep you going.

    I would appreciate yuo getting back to me, especially on the Dr. Gerson topic. I would also advise, as many here already are aware of – I used to be a Republican. I have since seen the light and converted to be a Libertarian. In Beautiful Truth you will find that Dr. Gerson cured Albert Schweitzer…… of diabetes. Make sure to write down specifically what decade it was that he accomplished that feat.

    I actually found the workbook for the Dr. Gerson Method… right on EBAY about two years ago. I recommend all of you open your minds to alternative thinking…. starting RIGHT NOW.

    Why? There’s a reason that 88 year old David Rockefeller is still up and kickin it large, like George Burns…. it’s because he has access to the truths inside these videos I recommend …. most 88 year olds I know are either dead, or damn near it. What say you?

    And, yes – like ELLEN says…. (or meant to say) … get a water filter for the kitchen faucet and make sure it removes FLOURIDE from the water you drink, and use for cooking, at home.

    The next time you see a TV ad that says the human body can’t tell the difference between one sweetener or another, either understand what those Nazis are trying to tell you, or surrender and learn to love your chains.

        Anthony, one of the first lessons a teacher learns is the sad fact that some people can’t be educated. Some people refuse to be educated. Some people rainwash themselves into believing that politicians will ‘save them from themselves.’

        Some people will monitor this website, and get smarter in the process. Some won’t live long enough to realize that we have to sift and sort daily. Any American who thinks Uncle Scam is any kind of a savior (spiritual, political, economic, etc.) willingly belongs to that class of people who REFUSE to learn. They are content being useful idiots.
        I am content to let them live in their fantasy world – as long as they don’t try to force their self-enforced insanity on me, my family or my friends.

    As a healthcare provider, I find it frustrating to have to write prescriptions for pills which may do more harm than good. I prefer nutrition based answers. I searched for a few years for some decent supplements, and when I found them got a distributorship for them. Please check out OPC-3…it has the only isotonic delivery of pycnogenol available. Of course I prefer you checking out my website, but you can just google it if you like. I obviously can’t say that the isotonix supplements are best for everyone, but I simply prefer no filler, binders and plain junk in my vitamins and supplements. The OPC-3 has helped so many people, I wish more health care providers would get educated about this stuff. Of course, avoiding processed foods, fluoridated water, bottled water and other nasty stuff is the basis for good health.

    Every time i see Hussein Obama and his czars my blood pressure shoots straight up. Im sure there are millions of other americans whose blood pressure has rose sky-high ever since ACORN and other criminals voted this THUG Hussein Obama into office.
