Rubio On The Defensive After Conservative Outcry On Immigration 180˚

Tea Party conservatives have been hammering Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) this week as the Senate hammers out its own version of the immigration bill he helped craft.

Amnesty and a path to citizenship have been points of outrage among conservatives who believe only immigrants who’ve legally entered the U.S. should have a shot at attaining to the rights and privileges of American citizenship. Rubio, after demonstrating he agreed with that view in 2010, has shifted his stance so dramatically that many conservatives lament he’s not the same candidate they voted for.

So, on Wednesday, Rubio stood before the Senate and directly addressed his critics, appealing to them to see his amity with the Senate’s Gang of Eight as the lesser of two evils. The Daily Caller summarized the pith of his remarks:

“I have received numerous emails and calls from conservatives and Tea Party activists. Their opinions and concerns really matter to me because they stood with me during my election. To hear the worry, anxiety and growing anger in the voices of so many people who helped me get elected to the Senate, who I agree with on virtually every other issue, has been a real trial for me,” he said.

But he said he told them that he would go to Washington to “fight to stop what is bad for America,” and that what we have now is, in fact, hurting America. ”I simply wasn’t going to leave it to Democrats alone to try to figure out how to fix it.”

“I got involved because I knew that if conservatives didn’t get involved in shaping this legislation, it would not have any border security reforms our nation desperately needs,” Rubio said.

Rubio asked tea party conservatives who are upset to understand that he honestly believes “it is the right thing for our country.”

And he assured them he would continue to fight alongside them for “real tax reform, lowering the debt, balancing our budget, reducing regulations, rolling back job-killing environmental policies and repealing the disaster of Obamacare,” and to defend “the sanctity of life and traditional marriage.”

If you’re interested in knowing how that played with nonplussed conservatives, head on over to the Daily Caller’s original story and browse the reader comments.

Reconciling the concept of individual sovereignty with conscientious participation in the modern American political process is a continuing preoccupation for staff writer Ben Bullard. A former community newspaper writer, Bullard has closely observed the manner in which well-meaning small-town politicians and policy makers often accept, unthinkingly, their increasingly marginal role in shaping the quality of their own lives, as well as those of the people whom they serve. He argues that American public policy is plagued by inscrutable and corrupt motives on a national scale, a fundamental problem which individuals, families and communities must strive to solve. This, he argues, can be achieved only as Americans rediscover the principal role each citizen plays in enriching the welfare of our Republic.

rubio is schumer’s lap puppy and that is something he cannot spin. He can lie through his teeth, after all he is an elected official, but conservatives know he cut some sort of deal and that will come to light when he runs for reelection. He wants to stay in Washington, so he has sold some of his soul for this and the rest will go when schumer beckons him. What bunch of turds we have running this country.

    • Guest

Right. And together they form a pile of crap!

      • real talk 1

And when his name come up just don’t forget we owe him .

  • jrr

Rubio has done exactly what I suspected he was going to do before he was elected.

Not sure what we are going to do about it, since nothing we do seems to have any effect on the career politicians any more.

    • Junkki

Agree, many are finding out about Obama as well and wish they had not. Pays to read and find out all you can about a candidate instead of listening to main stream media. Hopefully someday the American people will wake up.

      • real talk 1

It had better be today as the little doggy say ruff ruff

    • real talk 1

Stop voting for them and we will see what kind of career they have.

  • Doris C

I figured he was too good to be true. Its a shame. The only conservatives left are Cruz and young Paul.

    • Guest

And Paul told the illegal immigrants “we’ll find a place for you.” That leaves us with Cruz.

      • Pissed

And Mike Lee of Utah. He’s very good too. Also, I think his name is Gomer?

      • real talk 1

Oh well we go with him and let the other clown go.

    • real talk 1

Oh well we build will them let the other clowns go.

  • squeeze127

What’s with all these conservatives going liberal once they get elected? It even pertains to the SCOTUS. How many conservative judges went liberal?

  • foxxybey

RINO’s don’t care about the union, just their own riches while in office, all of them have to go.

Number one on our list John MCcain

      • foxxybey

I wish Viet Nam would have kept him.

  • wandamurline

Hope he enjoys the rest of his term. I live in Texas, but have to admit that I helped this bozo get into office, for which I apologize. Will not make the same mistake next time. He lied through his teeth when he was on the Sunday morning news three weeks ago…he said that these people would pay a fine, that they would have to learn to speak English, that they would be at the back of the line waiting as long as 15 years before citizenship and the BIGGEST LIE out of this guy’s mouth was that they WOULD NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR ANY KIND OF BENEFITS. Bull Crap….as soon as they get their green card, they will be on the tax payer’s tit. How in the hell can we afford to take care of another 11 million welfare recepients. America is broke …. and amnesty will not stop the rest of Mexico from coming to America….if these people get amnesty, the others coming illegally will want the same.

    • IsThisAmerica

it will never stop. Think we lost the south west already.

      • real talk 1

        So it seems.

I watched the Senate hearings this afternoon on the Immigrations Bill. It is the biggest mess with “pork” and “stimulus”, items that applied to agri workers were left out. ICE and the people that have to process the illegals have all asked them to vote against the bill. I had emailed about 4 senators to vote against it earlier and when I saw what was going on, I e-mailed about 10 more. It looked like the Demos where/had cut a deal and shutting discussions down. Janet N of DHS is telling border partol and Ice “not to arrest anyone, there is a Federal lawsuit against her for overstepping her power. She needs to be fired.

I don’t live in Florida, but I sent money to Rubio’s campaign. Florida, I APOLOGIZE, I’m very sorry.

I don’t believe a word the man says anymore.

When you agree with Schumer, McCain and Graham, good grief, he should have known it’s not good for America!

    • Debbie Hogan Tate

Maybe all those who contributed can ask for a refund!! I know that will not happen but if everyone sent a request it might make him start thinking! Think of the look on his face when he would get 1000 request for refunds! “No money next term” printed on the bottom of the request! Actually we should do this for all donations! Not just to Rubio!

      • wavesofgrain

        Good idea!!

  • wavesofgrain

I was at a meeting with a sheriff against the immigration bill. He was with Chris Crane (ICE Union President) in DC last week. When Rubio was taking questions with media, Chris Crane raised his hand. Rubio stated he would not take any questions from Chris OR the Sheriff’s Association. Rubio was downright arrogant and impudent. Everyone should scratch Rubio off their list. He is “one of them, the left progressives”, and only cares about erasing our sovereignity to get his masses from Puerto Rico in the US

What is creepy is, it is almost like the SciFi movie, the Stepford Wives. One by one, each wife became a puppet to her husband. It’s as if there is some sort of bribery taking place (probably cash) too good for them to refuse. That is why Justice Roberts has betrayed his party. It is rumored that he, Boehner, Obamas, many other Justices and Congress members have fat growing bank accounts in the Vatican bank (which is under investigation for money laundering). One by one the Repubs/Conservatives have joined the ranks of the left. They are bailing quickly, saying to He$$ with this country.

  • Junkki

Thought he was going to be a viable candidate for conservatives, but now I think he would be a detriment. He did this to himself by not listening to the American people.

    • Debbie Hogan Tate

He gets what he deserves, NOTHING!
On Univision, the Spanish language TV network, Rubio said “First comes the legalization, then come the measures to secure the border, and then comes the process of permanent residence.”.

This shocking statement contradicts what Rubio said in other interviews when he claimed that border security would be improved before amnesty.
“Gang of 8″ should be renamed “Gang of liars and thieves”!

      • real talk 1

        That’s putting it mildly

  • Junkki

I still say Mexico needs to take part in this and clean up their country so their citizens will want to stay.

    • real talk 1

It’s not just Mexico it’s every body after the new votes , why don’t they just give all the illegals 20,000 apiece and send them back we are giving it to them any and all the entitlement that go with it but first secure the border with a double tier fence and patrol then give them that loot and send them on their way and it will help Mexico’s economy as well/.

  • Debbie Hogan Tate

The Dems emailed me the other day for a donation! I wrote back and told them to get it off Obama and his $200 million dollar vacation! Also told them I would write in a vote for my dog before I would support a bunch of liars, thieves and Muslims!

    • real talk 1

Let them get it from these illegals after all they get hefty tax refunds

  • IsThisAmerica

I’m so tired of faxing, and calling every day and still McCain and Flake are gung ho on amnesty. I read a small part of that bill and nearly puked. Any crime those rotten illegals commited or commit is waived and citizinship is handed to them on a silver platter and a big smile. No not from we the people, but the communist, socialist hate mongering people in D.C. They hate us, peorid. We are no bodies. Why is Obama always out of the country? Is he expecting something to happen so he can have an alibi that I wasn’t even in the country when that happened? He wants to RULE over everyone. I don’t like to think about our future. it scares me because I like most everyone else have never lived under a ruler, king, or dictator. Look at the abortions going on and how late stage they are. Obamacare, and what is going on with the IRS? Nothing? Why is our military spread out all over the world guarding other countries and not their own? What is going on? The liberals are attacking constantly and nothing happens to them. Don’t believe in God. Don’t believe in doma, our marriage sanctuary because it pisses the gays off. Sorry my country must have turned somewhere and I didn’t see the turn. Now I’m going to be forced to believe in things that I do not agree with. What say you?

    • wavesofgrain

I know how you feel, IsThisAmerica. The government has shown us it cares more about hoardes of Immigrants than its own citizens who fund their paychecks. And I can see a reason for this. The Immigrants are fleeing a more oppressive govt, one that keeps them destitute. In America, they are being ‘wined and dined’, never having to work again if they wish. They will obey their American Master and not question the American Master’s rule. These Immigrants will procreate at a much faster rate than the responsible citizens, as they have nothing else to do but have children…thus being rewarded by the government for each child. That is the purpose of the Dictator. Eventually the population will be replaced with a naive, compliant populace so the Dictator/Government/Conspirators can rule without opposition.

NO more begging no more jobs come 2014

  • Robbie

Rubio turns out to be nothing more than a left leaning pinko. Clearly he would lead this once great nation down the path of socialism and you know where that ends up: in a pit of firey destruction. What is needed are leaders who would be true to the Founders’ intentions as found in the Constitution of the United States of America. And preferably that leader would also wear one of those neat, white wigs with the pony tail that the Founders were so fond of. Britches would be nice too. And it was not for no reason that only men could vote originally. We have lost our way in this great nation and we must get back to first principles. A lot of free labor would be a good idea too. That’s what the Founders had – why not us true Americans?

  • real talk 1

Rubio you like all others are not listening you think you have the answer but you are not listening we said it time and time again we want the border fixed first no other plan will do then we can talk to the dems. about what to do with these people, you and your colleagues are the ones that made it this way . Border First OR NO DEAL why should America have to wait let them wait , if you can’t do that then GO HOME.

  • chochowming

The lesser of two evils. I’m so damned sick of choosing between the lesser of two evils I can’t tell you. Rubio, you’ve cooked your goose. Once again one of our politicians tells us what we want to hear and then backs away from the commitment. Is it really that hard to be straight with us. You spew a common sense, conservative, responsible line and then you walk away from it. Rubio is just like the rest of them. Is there anyone that can be trusted? You know he’s doing this to be with the establishment and secure his political position with them. Vote him out. Get a real conservative to run and to introduce term limits. These guys shouldn’t even be able to think of politics as a career. If they do you know they are crooked.

  • chochowming

So many people say that the fence won’t work. A fence sure worked for The East Germans for several decades. We’re not trying to keep people in against their will , we’re trying to keep them out to protect ourselves.

  • US Army (retired)

“However, political parties may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion. — George Washington, Farewell Address, Sep. 17, 1796
