It was 48 years ago this week that a very disgruntled politician told a California press conference that "you won’t have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore." Nixon had just failed in his bid to become Governor of California. He announced that he was retiring from politics.
Not quite. Exactly 10 years later, on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 1972, Richard Nixon was re-elected to a second term as President of the U.S. He won a landslide victory over George McGovern, carrying every state in the union, except Massachusetts.
Nixon’s life of dramatic ups and downs continued, as two years later he became the first person in history to resign the presidency. Remember Watergate?
