Restaurants Foil San Francisco Scrooges

Are you McSerious? The nagging nannies who govern San Francisco don’t like restaurants like McDonald’s using free toys to entice purchases of kids’ meals. So they passed the Healthy Meal Incentives Ordinance, making it illegal to include free toys with food that fails to meet certain nutritional standards. McDonald’s and Burger King responded by charging 10 cents for the coveted trinkets. McDonald’s will use its proceeds to build a Ronald McDonald House at the new University of California-San Francisco Medical Center at Mission Bay.

Boeing has it both ways. Sooner after Boeing Co. approved a new contract with its machinists union, promising to build the 737 in Washington State, the National Labor Relations Board dropped its lawsuit against the company. The NLRB had sued to bar Boeing from building its 787 at a billion-dollar, union-free plant it built in South Carolina. The NLRB is supposed to be a fair-minded referee of disputes between management and labor. But of course, with its membership packed with President Barack Obama appointees, it is anything but.

That pipeline would create a lot of jobs. Obama has refused to support the Keystone XL pipeline project because he doesn’t want to incur the wrath of the environmentalists who oppose it. The pipeline would transport crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Port Arthur, Texas. Building it would create thousands of new jobs and secure vital energy resources. On Tuesday, the House voted 234-193 to pass the payroll tax credit bill with the stipulation that the permitting decision for the pipeline be accelerated. Ten Democrats and 224 Republicans voted in favor of the bill, which immediately stalled in the Senate.

Farewell to the Year of the Rabbit. In the Chinese Zodiac, 2011 was the Year of the Rabbit. According to Chinese tradition, it was supposed to be a year when you could catch your breath and calm your nerves. It sure didn’t work out that way, did it? The coming year, which begins on Jan. 23 and ends on Feb. 9, 2013, will be the Year of the Dragon, supposedly a time of success and happiness. Let’s see if that comes true.
