Researcher: Arrogance Derails Careers

AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 5 (UPI) — An Ohio researcher said he and his team found workplace arrogance is often used to mask inadequacies and will likely derail a worker’s career.

Stanley Silverman, an organizational and industrial psychologist and a dean at the University of Akron, said the team interviewed hundreds of people over four years in an attempt to quantify workplace arrogance, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Monday.

“If you’re being arrogant, you’re going to derail your own career,” Silverman said. “It’s just a matter of when. Nobody is irreplaceable.”

He said his team created an arrogance scale based in part on 26 measures of performance, including a worker believing in his or her superiority to other workers and making decisions affecting others without listening to their opinions.

Silverman said the research indicates people who display arrogance in the workplace are often attempting to conceal shortcomings such as incompetence or low self-esteem.

“Here’s what happens,” Silverman said. “I’m worried that other people are going to realize that I’m not very competent at my job, so I’m going to put other people down, criticize others and belittle my employees because somehow I think I’m going to look better that way. If I put down everybody around me, it makes my candle shine a little brighter.”

I don’t want to criticize this topic’s author, but he is, after all, right and wrong. If you extend the author’s main thrust to truly ‘special people,’ then major roadblocks are encountered.
You see, it’s one thing to act like you’re better (via justified arrogance), but when you’re arrogant and it’s easy to prove you’re anything but special, smart or whatever the key measure is, then you’re just another hypocrite posing as a human. In the matter of The Anointed One, there is no doubt that his arrogance is world-class. He is giving Bubba Clinton a run for claiming to be the darling of the ‘elites.’
What Bubba won’t acknowledge is the fact that he’s no longer in the W H. The Anointed One, on the other hand, is.
The Anointed One’s chief problem in life IS his arrogance. His appearance in Kansas before a crowd of adolescents makes a strong case that his arrogance demands that he willingly confuse teens with adults. Adults can vote. Teens can’t – not yet. Adults can recognize the difference between a talking mule muffin and someone who has leadership potential.
The Anointed One, it seems, can’t find his way to that school in Kansas. At last report, The Anointed One is 45 minutes late getting to that school. To some, being late is a bad habit. Maybe he has confused Kansas with one of those phantom seven ‘extra’ states that he’s talked about.
To me, if he can’t find his way to a small state with help from the Secret Service (no offense, guys), then perhaps The Anointed One should stay in DC, where you don’t have to know much at all, let alone find your way to this place or that. Maybe he should take a voluntary cut in pay until or unless he has at least a 1st grade knowledge of American geography. Just a thought, folks.
