Research probes the benefits of zinc

September 4, 2009 by

Research probes the benefits of zinc A new study has sought to explain the exact mechanism behind the long known role of zinc in fighting infections and boosting the immune system.

The work done at the Center for Nutritional Sciences at the University of Florida focused on testing healthy volunteers who were divided into two groups – one which took nutritional supplements containing zinc and the other which was given placebo.

The investigators then analyzed T cells from the participants’ blood samples and simulated infection in laboratory conditions. They found that T cells from the zinc-supplemented group had a higher activation rate than those from the control group.

T cells are responsible for destroying viruses and bacteria and are at the forefront of the body’s immune system response.

Dr. John Wherry, deputy editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology which published the results, says that "studies like this help shed light on how zinc may enhance the ability of our immune systems to fight off foreign invaders."

He adds that the value of the research lies in the fact that it may lead to new treatments for infections, many of which are becoming increasingly resistant to traditional antibiotics.

To those who want to keep our country a Democracy, the answer to liberty for all is EDUCATION.
It’s up to the parents and school boards to examine the text books. It’s my understanding that History and Gov’t have become dinosaurs in some of our schools. I’ve been appalled in the past to see that people are not able to recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor sing the Nat’l Anthem. Even in suppressed societies, the children can do this.
Maybe this period of history will awaken our nation. I’m so happy to see the creation of the 9/12 Project,of the Tea Parties, the Tea Party Express and the march on Washington. People are speaking out. They are articulate and knowledgable. Kudos to all of them.

Our education of our children will continue to suffer, as the liberal think tank runs our school systems, and indoctrinates them into the liberal think tank. Its a shame, but thats what it is, and so sad to say the family isnt doing the job it should raising its kids.

    • DaveH

The workable solution for this problem is:
      1) pass voucher bills so that parents can have ‘choice’ in their children’s education.
      2) get the government out of the private schools education choices.

Has anyone noticed that as government gets more involved in our lives and choices, the level of discontent in our society has grown not decreased? This is inevitable with Big Government because by necessity when government controls the choice they have to pick a side. Whichever side doesn’t get picked is going to be unhappy.

If we get them out of our educational choices, that will eliminate a lot of the discontent in our society. Of course, that would also eliminate a large captive audience from government propaganda.

I am so sad that there are so many selfish, arrogant, smug, uncompassionate, ignorant, uneducated people in the United States.
Unlike our previous president, our current one was elected by the majority, and not appointed by the Supreme Court. I believe that the Democratic party in in the majority, and not he far right loonies.
So get over it!! The right wing believes what it wants to and is not willing to accept the facts.

    • s c

Let’s try it this way, Connie. What facts are you talking about?
Do you really believe that a majority is the same as being right? If life was that simple, then some of your role models must be Bolshevik Russia, Mao’s China and Hitler’s WWII Germany.
Being in power means nothing, unless you can back it up with common sense, integrity and at least one foot in the real world. If this administration isn’t on drugs, it’s a first-rate imitation (it may not be a fact, but it sure seems that way).
So far, some of the FACTS include 1) we’re expected to endure a prez who has a miserable vocabulary 2) czars who are not accountable to the American people 3) a prez who promised to get us out of Iraq/Afghanistan, and 4) a Congress full of two-legged skunks who refuse to read legislation they plan to ram down our throats.
And you want to talk about FACTS? Please tell us that you don’t share the same dictionary that comrade obama uses.

    • JeanM

I am glad that I am “uneducated”, because what I am reading and hearing from the “educated” is closed-minded, elitist, and totally bereft of real facts. The rumor-mongering and false witness always seems to come from those who support the current president and his socialist/marxist views.
It’s like all the hippies have grown up and are now trying to stifle the views of the real majority — those who believe that God and Capitalism are best for our country!
It’s true that Barack Obama received more votes in the presidential election, but the elists want to say it was by a “huge majority”, which simply isn’t true. 7 million votes do not constitute a “huge majority”, and there are those of us who even question whether those votes were all legitimate.
Talk show host: “White people need to get over the 200-yr-old guilt of slavery, and open their eyes to the policies and positions of the president.” (Guess what? This talk show host is a black man!!)
What do you have to say for yourself now?

So Connie You think all is fine in America? Do you believe both the Democratic and Republican parties are truly concerned about you or your family? Does everything look good to you? Because if it does (allow me to try and put this to you in a polite way) You stated and I agree “there are so many ignorant, uneducated people in the United States.
It would appear to me that you fall into this category.

    • eyeswideopen

Jim, I think you fall in the smug, arrogant category. This woman was merely stating that she is sad that the rt wingers are upset that they no longer have the power and are denying that they had any hand in what has happened to this country. She is correct a majority did elect this President, and gave him a mandate. She never stated everything was fine in America!! You made that assumption. For an educated man, your interpretation skills are lacking. Let me put this in a polite way, your condescending attitude is obvious.

      • DaveH

Eyes, how come you didn’t attack Connie also for her unsupported, fallacious accusations, name-calling, and ridicule?

      • DaveH

And please reread his statement, Eyes. He didn’t say she made that statement. He asked a question. You stated his interpretation skills are lacking; I am stating that your reading skills are lacking. You are behaving like a rabid attack dog. If you don’t get a grip on yourself, you are going to become irrelevant on this blog.

  • DaveH

Good for you Andres, good to see someone standing tall against the government supported multi-national corporations.

  • DaveH

This is unbelievable stuff. From the Massachusetts Liberals who fight vigorously for the right to take a baby’s life, but turn around and force people to take risky vaccinations for their own good. It is all about power, nothing more. We need to ‘Quarantine’ Massachusetts:

    • s c

DaveH, Massachusetts has become the east coast version of California’s fruits, nuts and flakes. Any state that can produce people like Ted Kennedy and Baaaney Fwanck (and can’t see what is so wrong with that) needs to do some SERIOUS soul-searching.
Did you say you have chronic fatigue syndrome? If this is so, you might consider taking quality enzymes. Take care of your health – comrade obama and his concentration camp chippies won’t.

      • DaveH

I do take several supplements. You’re right, there are groups right now that are trying to take away our supplement choices.

  • Mirko

There is one comment – Connie Harmon, Sept. 5 – 09, which I have found very interesting, most of it is corect except arrogant, selfish end other thinks. I disagre and this pearson is very wrong saying that all our presidents wre elected by majority, which is not through our presidents were selected long time befor election. The problem is not just staitment of this pearson but majority of the American people are misinformed.

  • JoeO

Connie, This President was elected by those ignorant, uneducated,,,,,and mainly UNINFORMED idiots, many who have never voted before.

  • Matt

That’s what people voted for in the last election – change. We want a vision and a leader who can evolve a national consensus. What we’ve gotten instead is a continuation of George Bush’s bankrupt policies. Come November that’s the measure I will be judging candidates by – Do they have a vision and an articulated action plan. Not just the ability to twist a verb into a noun and think that’s good enough for Americans.
It’s not. And Americans are above anything else, an impatient lot. We don’t long stand for waiting for anything. We need more, not less deficit spending, but we need to spend on projects that will benefit the whole of society, not some financial pleasure monkeys on Long Island. It sometimes helps to have a plan.
On the backside of a holiday, the thing that I find myself most wanting is the abolition of a noun and a return to a verb.

I reeally don’t understand this. I thought I was going to read something about the benefits of Zink. In the 17 responses I read a lot about various political views, but NOT EVEN ONCE did I come across the word zink or anything related to the study. Did I misunderstand what this lot was supposed to be about or did the 17 people who submitted the above replies miss what the discussion was supposed to be about?
