Republican Moral Crusading Is Killing The Party

It isn’t the end of the world for conservatives and truly Libertarian-leaning Republicans no matter how dire the re-election of President Barack Obama seems; but it is time for the neocon, moral-crusading wing of the GOP to be put to pasture if the Party will survive.

Because he used her as a campaign prop and then backed away from her principles, Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan brought Ayn Rand, the mother of Objectivism, postmortem fame in headlines throughout the 2012 Presidential election season. So, it is befitting to revisit her ideas and understanding why the modern Republican Presidential ticket doesn’t embody the “conservative” spirit to which it always lays claim.

In the January 1962 edition of “The Objectivist Newsletter” Rand writes:

It is generally understood that those who support the “conservatives,” expect them to uphold the system which has been camouflaged by the loose term of “the American way of life.” The moral treason of the “conservative” leaders lies in the fact that they are hiding behind that camouflage: they do not have the courage to admit that the American way of life was capitalism, that that was the politico-economic system born and established in the United States, the system which, in one brief century, achieved a level of freedom, of progress, of prosperity, of human happiness, unmatched in all the other systems and centuries combined—and that that is the system which they are now allowing to perish by silent default.

Meaning, the President of the United States doesn’t create jobs, prevent abortions or un-Biblical marriages, issue opinions on any variety of moral social issues and certainly has no hand in “making America great.” The President serves to push the government out of the way in order for the American people to do these things, and they will. Government must get out of the way, and Republicans must first lay aside their moral ascriptions to allow for a candidate only interested in the “conservatism” of government as it relates to how it carries out its Constitutionally allowed activities if they ever expect to present to the American people a candidate who can win.

Barack Obama certainly isn’t going to get government out of the way. But, given the current political landscape and vitriol coming from fiscal conservatives in government, he may not have much of a chance to push socialistic financial agendas. That is where Republicans have the most chance of regaining power of the Nation’s highest office.

Regardless of moral views, imposition of religious moral standards across vast swaths of a society is a historically impossible idea. The moral pandering of fellow Republican politicians — here’s to you, Todd Akin and Richard Murdoch — likely cost Romney a valuable chunk of the electorate. Candidates who would otherwise have an easy case of pushing sound monetary policies to a populace already hurting from liberal financial initiatives and witnessing the European failures in long-term adherence to them lose elections because rather than talk about what government should not do to improve the economy they are discussing what it should do to prevent personal liberties.

No American is forced to have an abortion or be homosexual, just as no American is forced to attend church or believe in traditional family values. But we all (or, at least, the vast majority of us) are forced to pay taxes at some point. We all need the ability to provide for ourselves and (again, at least the majority) want the opportunity to do so.

So, Republicans, it is time to do what you are good at and push sound financial policy on the National scale. If there is a social battle to be won, it may be better fought on the community level.

The army of young Ron Paul supporters (largely extremely fiscally conservative and socially liberal) was shunned by the GOP this time around. And Paul has probably seen his last political crusade, but imagine the campaign they could help build to revive America’s “conservative” Party for similar candidates over the course of the next infuriating two and four years.

    As i stated in an article yesterday, it’s time for the GOP with conservatives as a whole, to reach out to others. Although i’m no fan of Haley Barbour, but he was right when he said, it’s time for addition not subtraction. The base has to grow and adapt. The demographics have change dramatically, lets go with the flow not fight back the tide. Thanks!!

        I agree. Social conservatives aren’t trying to force anything on anybody. They simply want to keep things as they have been, as the founding fathers intended. Social conservatism is as it has been. Liberalism seeds to change that.

        We are fighting for truth and human dignity. Abortion and the rest of what has been forced on us degrades the value of human life and I refuse to devalue humanity. All the money in the world….and Obama has spent it all, already, would not entice me to let down my guard against the evil that has taken over half the hearts of this country.

        Our Founding Fathers were for Real Freedom, not the kind “You’re Free to do things MY way”.
        If the Democrats want their Freedom, they need to respect the Freedom of others.
        If the Republicans want their Freedom, they need to respect the Freedom of others.
        Set an example for Freedom, rather than against it.
        People need to hold the Government to the same rigid standards that we expect individuals to be held to. We can’t kill our neighbors because we believe they are a threat to our future, and we shouldn’t allow Government people to behave that way. We can’t help ourselves to our neighbor’s assets because they have more than we do, and we shouldn’t allow Government people to behave that way.
        This country will continue trending downward until people wake to the reality that nobody is exempt from moral code, whether they call themselves “government” or not.

        Choosing to accept unrealistic and immoral behavior and actions is not in my soul. I will stand strongly to retain and enhance the morals that are defined by God. I will not fold just to increase the votes. This is what has happened in Greece, California, and now, our nation. Watch and cry as the nation I fought for and nearly died for has collapsed into progressivism on its way to communism. I will not hasten its demise!

Just this week I heard of a case in Utah where a retarded girl who lived in an institution, but whose parents were still legal guardians, had bueacrats trying to force her to have an abortion and be sterilized against the will of her and her parents. There were even 6 qualified families that had already volunteered to adopt the baby. I never heard the results of the court case, but if it can even be suggested, I don’t know what this country is coming to.

        The author states, ” No American is forced to … or be homosexual”, but those that believe that homosexuality is wrong are forced to support it.

        The author staes,” just as no American is forced to attend church or believe in traditional family values.”, but we are forced to live our lives in a way that supports non-family values. Businesses are forced to pay for abortions and birthcontroll even if that is totally against their values. Another example is a christian photographer and a christian baker forced to support homosexual marraige or have their business licneses taken away. In both cases there were other businesses that had the ability to meet the needs of the homosexual couples but they chose the christian ones to force them to act contrary to their beliefs.

        If conservatives are not allowed to stand up for their beliefs, then they will lose all of their rights to have their own beliefs.

        The author also speaks against fighting against abortion. It isn’t fighting against abortion; it is fighting to protect all life. If you don’t have life, you don’t have any other freedom or right, so defending the right to life is more important than any other right. It is the primary right.

        Founding fathers set up this government for mostly LOCAL rule….not a huge central government dictating social conservative principles.

        You guys don’t know much about the constitution if you think that’s the federal government’s role to get into marriage gay or otherwise. The president has very few duties but we wouldn’t know that anymore because the balance of powers is so corrupted now.

        The GOP is doomed….it has overstepped….it has decayed.

        What do you consider “everything of value”? Not too long ago, less than 250 years ago, “everything of value” was rule of nations by a King blessed by a national church, and supported by a hereditary nobility. The established order, ordaned by God. The idea that a people could rule themselves, via elected leaders, and citizens could rise and fall in society on their own merits, was very revolutionary.

        Good, the party NEEDS TO DIE!! Libertarianism is the true Spirit of America. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the true spirit of America. Abortion is completely morally unacceptable in ANY society of non-sociopaths. The MUSLIMS are better than us on this!! Choosing homosexuality is morally repugnant and also degrading to society, but actually IS a libertarian issue. To use the word “marriage”, a religious sacrament is unacceptable. There should be a provision for civil unions. States should decide these things. Republicans are equally sociopathic with their constant wars on non-agressors to the US, with iraq being the most glaring example recently and totally morally unacceptable!

        It’s just as horrible to force someone to end a pregnancy as it is to force them to remain pregnant.

        But a 6-year-old in a mature woman’s body sure makes for some tough decisions to be made. I fail to understand why it’s anyone’s business except her PARENTS. After all, the right wants the parents involved if it’s going to stop an abortion. Why the double standard?

      Its the moral issues that are the only ones I care about and that can really change the course this country is on. THat is eveident in the way people voted this election. No one, even evangelicals voted their conscience. THey voted their wallet. In a world economy the status of the US or any other country is negligable in light of our economic policies. And as that goes, Repubs are no different than the Dems. Career politicians only care for one thing, votes! And they will succumb to whatever wind is blowing to get them. Boehner talked tough before the 2008 election and has turned into a wimp as speaker of the house.
      We are on a slippery slope without our morals and I believe we will never recover from the regression we are in moraly. This country will fall within the next 15-20 years and become a third world country without a moral revival. The only way to protect us from this is a turnaround in our personal views on individual accountability (moraly and economicaly) and put term limits on every government worker from the President (which will probably become a constitutional amendment to remove term limits for the office this term) to the state and local levels. This is not what the founding fathers intended it to be and they served and went back to the private sector after a term.

        It is only my faith in God that keeps my spirits up. If I didn’t believe there was a larger purpose to life I would either join the plunder or die of dispair. But I believe there is a MUCH larger plan and I was just lucky enough to be born at one of the major turning points as I believe most of Israel believes as well.

        Steve – I can only say AMEN. If the republican party chooses to accept the non-Godly views of the Democrats – why vote for either? Unfortuantely I believe the Republican party is doomed, primarily because it’s platform is DOES contain many of the Biblical views we hold firm. So, politically, where do we go from here? I really don’t know. I guess I will have to have faith in the God of the Bible – who laughs at the scheming of nations and kings.

        I agree in part with the comment that too much emphasis was put on the moral issues when we have an economically challenged nation. HOWEVER, if there had been more emphasis on restoration of the Consitutuional rights of every person, and a return to the principles of our founding fathers many of the moral issues would have taken care of themselves. The government does not belong in our bedrooms, is not responsible for supplying our entertainment, or ensuring that everyone enjoys ‘a piece of the pie’ they contributed nothing to make. It DOES have the responsiblity of ensuring that the entire Constitution is not violated (and not reinterpreted to satisfy personal agendas), and is upheld in every court in the land.

I believe the only way to save America is to start teaching “American History” & the fact that Whites,Blacks & Jews ALL worked together to save and make America great! I don’t think it is to late to teach all Americans about her history and the part GOD played in it. Did you know the first text book in school was the BIBLE! God had his hand on America,but sin & wrong thinking took over…It is time we ALL got back to the basics…with GOD in control

        Actually I do know that. Printing was expensive and books were relatively rare. The religious folks of the day made sure that if someone had any book it was the bible. So, it was ubiquitious and thus easy to teach reading from.

        BTW, those PUBLIC schools aren’t a “christian” notion. MOF most of the opposition to public schools comes from the right.

        Right Brain Thinker, to become the party of “no” because you always say “no” is not a difficult epithet to acquire if the requests are always ridiculous. “Hey, let’s raise taxes on the wealthy to 90%!” “Ummmm, no, we’re not going to do that. That’s too much.”

        But the difficulty in coming to resolutions is in the constituency, not the congress, and I think too many people are missing that truth. The people of my district say to my congressman, “we don’t want taxes raised. Period.” So he votes against any raise in taxes. But perhaps the people in your district tell their congressman, “you should fix the deficit by taxing the wealthy. They have plenty to spare.” So he votes to raise taxes on the wealthy. Generally speaking, the Republicans are against the tax increases (because they tend to be the ones who pay it) and the Democrats are for the tax increases (because they receive the benefits that come from them). Therefore, their congressmen vote accordingly.

        This creates a gridlock. If Trey Gowdy from my district voted to raise taxes on the wealthy, I’d make his ears burn with the phone call he’d get from me. He knows he can expect such a call from not only me, but from many others as well. So no matter how much bad press he gets in the media, he’s going to do as we say. That’s his job. He is our proxy and representative. That’s why legislation requiring the acquisition of funds has to originate in the House of Representatives. Because the people have to approve of it before anyone even considers it for law.

        Obamacare, for example, wasn’t even passed legally. The President had the bill drawn up by lawyers. But due to the funding required and the taxes it imposes, it needed to come from the House, not the president.

        But that’s an argument for another day.

      I am amazed that we are continuing to use the blame game to forward our own individual agendas. If Mitt Romney had won would you be pointing the finger of blame at the party for their moral stance? This country was founded on moral principles by those who asked God for assistance in creating this government. They prayed for guidance. They reviewed all of the laws and constitutions of previous governments including those of past cultures and they were enlightened by God so that this nation could come into existence. We see in this country now a trend to attack God and keep Him out of everything when we owe everything to Him. We find a trend in this country to believe that man is all-powerful and technology is our god. We find in this country a trend to believe that this is a perfect world and this is it when we all know in the very depth of our spirits ….this is not it and we all die. We find in this country a trend to believe that we can ignore God and everything will be alright, but we just have to look at history to know that is not so as nation after nation has fallen and disappeared or been subjugated by another. Without moral values and adherence to principles in conjunction with belief in God and alignment to His will, one is without character and exposes the spirit to negative influences that will slowly, but steadily corrupt his values on a downward spiral. This is still that classic battle of those who believe in God and his laws and moral principles and live in His light versus those who do not believe God and believe in the power of their own will and their own desires and their ownselves…but in the end they are only humans whose body is subject to disease and decay and dies.

      Blame serves no one and is truly divisive. .It is far better to ask God to protect you and this country and guide us all to know what to do. In this way we all get the same message and we all work for the same goal and we all honor and respect each other and we are all one,

        L. Banks — you couldn’t have expressed what is happening in the world any better! We have thrown GOD and all his basic principles out the door. For the Democratic National Convention to vote on whether or not GOD should be put back into the platform — spoke of volumes. Republicans are just as nieve. We have thrown morality (GOD) out the door by the basic ways we disrespect human life from conception (abortion) to natural death (assisted suicides, coming death panels from Obamacare whereby the government decides who lives/dies). These are ALL the beginning basic principles of the health of our society — all GODS values. Instead, we have made ourselves and our government our GOD by using freewill (given by GOD) to replace him we sin and evil — everything contrary to his teachings. GOD has not forced our current lifestyles on us — we have chosen our own path. One good thing about GOD is that he welcomes us back if we sincerely want him in our life (read about the Prodigal Son in the bible). Problem is, I believe we have a much greater path of personal destruction before that happens. One thing to remember is that we are only a grain of sand in the ocean in comparison to life eternal (forever). I plan on making it eternal with GODS help. Those who continue to lead us on the current path best enjoy the best for themselves in this current life — because the short period of pleasure and lack of GOD will be filled with eternal pain from then on. We live thank God alone, in a Limited federal govt under the Republic[would never know it though]. Banks, you are to blame along with me as for the destruction of Americas Moral just. We are to live in a holy and just house and raise and teach the same. We are to repel any evil in our town govt and county court, and keep our Holy Church true and Holy. Now, as far as the Neo Con party that stole the GOP party, We can,t force your morality platform on its voters, it will push them to the left of lenin party. The gop and dem party has united into one party with different angles as far as I see it. Forcing the Bible in politics on a national level was done on purpose to re-elect the left of lenin.

        I believe in God, and I believe in being moral and taking responsibility for my actions. HOWEVER – I have never believed that God is looking down and caring particularly about the United States – or who wins a football game, etc., etc. He created us with the ability to make choices – so far we’re not doing so well. It’s plain to see that the choices made by the majority of humans AROUND THE WORLD are very poor choices indeed, and there is not much morality left. You cannot legislate morality. You can exercise your faith in any way you wish, but you cannot impose it on people. I do not believe in abortion, but I also don’t believe that anyone will EVER be able to make it illegal again. You also cannot do anything about the homosexuals. Sure, it’s possible that you can keep them from being “legally married” to each other, but that won’t make them go away. Their sin is their sin, and they will be judged for it. We can encourage others to live morally and in accordance with religious teachings, but we cannot force them to. If your allegiance is to God first, then perhaps politics is not your calling. The system is broken. They are all crooks and thieves. If they’re not, they don’t make it in politics.

These attitudes you’ll are promoting of exclusion, alienation, along with claims of “reverse discrimination” are the very reasons the GOP is failing bigtime. I, re-emphasize for the upteenth time, please reading the warnings of the late William F. Buckley, Late Jack Kemp, plus recently retired talk show host,Tony Brown. It’s quite easy to google this info. They stated that these “moral” policies of exclusion/will be the reasons why conservatives will falter in the future. As a matter of fact, the Late Buckley in 1971, condemned the late President Nixon for the Southern Strategy appoach. The voters Nixon tried to take away from the late segregationist Democrat, George Wallace. Buckley said this policy will lead to an eventual major disaster. Lo and Behold, he was absolutely correct. Even on his deathbed , William Buckley reiterated this. Well, his prophecy has come to past. I hope everybody here reads, weeps, then absorb so our party can change course. If not, using a line from the 1971 Sci-fi movie classic, “The Omega Man”. The line the late Charlton Heston character said,” Build coffins, that’s all you going to need.” That’s will be conservatives future very,very soon. Think about that!!

      Ron is against abortion, natural for a baby doc. He says get the feds out of it, it’s a state by state issue. I would add that if abortion stands, then women should be given the chance to know ALL the facts. That would include ultra sound pics & warnings about the probability of permanent physical damage to the woman & the very great likelihood of serious psychological problems of self condemnation, guilt & remorse.

      Seems to me that there has to be a way to wake people up to the fact that the growing child in a Mom’s womb is actually a human being with rights, just like the rest of us. Just because the baby is not walking around hardly means it is not a viable life form. If life doesn’t start at conception, then when?

      The cell division that takes place in a fertilized egg is driven by a life force. That HAS to be the same life force present that makes the child alive from conception to death. So why is is OK to kill that life force in the womb but not later, after the child has grown more?

      The R’s need to ask, “Why did so many R voters stay home this year? Why did we lose the woman’s vote, the Indie vote & that of most minorities?”

      Part of the R half of the Big Govt Party problem is that they keep giving us crap candidates like John McManchurian, who along with another traitor to the Constitution sneaked indefinite detention into the NDAA bill. This time the r’s gave us Romney & Ryan. These 2 clowns were easy to dissect. When I investigated them it was revealed that both are CINO-RINO to the core.

      The R half of the BGP is so corrupt I am not certain it can be reclaimed. What we need is to gather around one true Constitution based party… true conservative & freedom lovers have a problem of our own: to many ’3rd’ parties.

      I am a Christian since 1969. To many Christians think we need laws in areas that God should be taking care of. I have enough faith that He can deal with what the Bible calls sin in other people’s lives with out getting govt involved. Putting govt ahead of Nature’s God is not a good idea!

      As I said, Jesus ‘fixed’ me, He can fix ay one. No govt was required.

      Fast eddie, the problem with America is the fact that to many already are compromising with evil. When we turn away from God and the morals and honesty begin to be degraded that’s when we start to lose ground. We have to remember that we are ALL sinner’s and fall short of the glory of God, but NO compromise with satan EVER. If you would look at this world and our lives and understand that it is nothing more than a fight of good verses evil and has always been a battle for your very soul then you would begin to understand, hopefully.

        I am against homosexuality. I don’t think that life style deserves any special treatment. It should not be legitimatized by law.         I don’t need to rethink what I know. I have already done that many times in many diff circumstances. I know Him in whom I have believed & know He will watch for my life.

        We can argue about God & His existence, but the fruit of the R & D parties is the decline of the USA, even if God does not exist. Against the fact we are in decline there can be no argument. What we need to understand is WHY that decline is taking place. I have a difficult time thinking that our decline is not caused by & a parallel to, our departure from our Creator & the moral principals HE established in the Bible, as found in the New Testament. Sure is a weird coincidence, eh?

        If there was no God/Creator, then why should there be any person who is to say there is any right or wrong? Good or evil? If there is no power or force that ‘invented’ morality, causing it to be, because we make it up as we go, then there is no basis for much of anything regarding morality. That thinking seems to be the basis for why God is being eradicated from public display.

      Realistically, eddie, the problem isn’t extremism on the conservative side of the fence. The problem is the extremism on the liberal side of the fence. Republicans have not been fighting for the last two hundred years to keep marriage between a man and a woman. Liberals have been fighting for the last decade or two to force people with long-held beliefs and religious objections to acknowledge homosexuals as spouses when they don’t agree with the idea in any way. The Republicans didn’t fight to illegalize abortion over the course of two hundred years. Such a thing was always illegal until the Democrats fought for the right to kill unborn children amidst a moral climate that still considered the unborn child a “child.” From the founding of our republic, citizens have always had the right to keep and bear arms. It is the liberals trying to take that right away, acting as though America is the land of warm fuzzies where atrocities could never possibly be committed on the citizenry by its own government (even though it has happened not only here, but in every country around the globe throughout the entire history of man).

      As a conservative, I just want to be left alone. I want to live where I live, do as I do, believe as I believe, etc. I don’t want to be told who I have to hire, how much I have to pay them, who I must or must not rent a house to, where I have to keep my gun, whether or not I can keep it loaded, in sight, in the trunk, etc. If I harm my neighbor, I expect the law to set me straight. When my neighbor harms me, I expect the law to set them straight. But I don’t otherwise want the law interfering in my life.

      If I think that a marriage is between a man and a woman, then that’s what I think. No law will ever make it otherwise. I have a first amendment right to believe that way. I have a first amendment right to state that belief. And I have a first amendment right to tell my government that it would displease me if they tried to force me to acknowledge that couple as married, since it would directly violate my freedom of religion. But the aggressive extremism of the liberals is trying to force through that sort of legislation. They are trying to teach my children that homosexuality is the new normal. They are trying to teach my children tolerance for homosexuality when it goes against my Constitutionally protected right to free religion.

      Liberals are the problem. They are the ones making each and every new fight. The conservatives are merely fighting back in the hopes of preserving a moral way of life that has existed for centuries. I’m not a nutjob or a religious fanatic because I feel this way. I have every bit the same right to embrace my religion as someone else has to boo God on public television. My religious adherence or “fanaticism” as some might deem it may irritate some. But no more so than I get disgusted by an entire party platform that boos God not once, not twice, but three times. You folks are trying to make it a shameful thing to believe in morals, in God, in personal responsibility.

      I’m proud to be a Christian. I’m proud to be a conservative. And I will defend against every attack you liberals bring to my doorstep, even if I’m criticized for it.

        Alex you are right on. The Constitution was forged in the fires of compromise by men of faith. It is being shredded by people of NO faith who will accept NO compromise. It is impossible in my mind to be a Christian and NOT be a Conservative (real, not RINO) and to stand in firm opposition to legislation and governmental action that I believe is immoral.

        That’s a well thought out rationalization for depriving others of their freedom, even if that freedom is to sin. Is it really the liberals who are forcing religious people to acknowledge a homosexual marriage? Or is it fighting for the equal right for their non-traditional marriage to be acknowledged by the government? As I understand it, it’s been the religious conservatives whom have passed legislation to deprive this personal freedom to those who choose it.

        Unless it is something that physically or financially harms someone else, or deprives them of their equal liberty, it should not be imposed on the massed just because YOU think it’s wrong.

        That makes your arguments concerning abortion a little more understandable than homosexual marriage in which there is no victim to what you would have labeled as a crime. It is the woman’s body, not yours. Making abortion illegal might have consequences in which pregnancy endangers the life of the mother. Should a mother have no right to abort a pregnancy resulting from rape? Etc. etc. Abortion is a very controversial subject because of this, and requires everyone to draw a subjective line in the sand. Mine would be based on a definition of when such life becomes a human being with rights (3 to 4 weeks maximum unless having the baby would threaten the life of the mother).

        Yet despite most religious conservative stance on abortion, most of them hypocritically support an American Empire abroad responsible for many more deaths than there are abortions. They would support Israel in preemptive aggression, and have our nation fight a religious war against Muslims for the sake of fighting ‘evil’, or simply supporting Israel because they think the bible tells them so. Completely ignoring the doctrine of a ‘just war’.

        You label people whatever you want, but it is the concentration of legislating morality that neither physically nor financially harms others, that is the wrong of the religious conservative, and causes them to be hypocrites in their own standard while they not only ignore, but support, the injustices abroad.

The Republican Party of today is the direct descendant of the Democrats who tried to keep the slaves enslaved for decades through various Jim Crow tactics—remember Nixon’s “southern strategy”? The Republican Party of today is not Lincoln’s party, and it isn’t even Reagan’s party all that much—Reagan couldn’t and wouldn’t be nominated by today’s party.

    Perhaps what is killing the Republican party is the lack of willingness to truly stand for anything. They stand for social conservatism, as long as it doesn’t offend some groups. They stand for the traditional family, unless it is unpopular with some demographics. They stand against the murder of children in the womb, unless some people think it’s unfair. They stand against illegal imigration, unless it angers some potential voters. They stand for a balanced budget, unless that means cutting entitlement programs that will hurt their chance to be re-elected. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” WIthout a clear direction, defining their position, how can you tell the difference in the players.

    While I personnally don’t agree with the Democrat’s platform, at least it is clear what they stand for.

      No, several Repulicans stood clearly on “moral” issues. Murdock and Aikan stated forthrightly that a woman who becomes pregnant through rape must bring her baby to term. They were both defeated by their Democrate opponents McCaskill and Donnelly. In 2010 Sharon Angle in Nevada and Christine O’Donnell in Delaware both took strong anti-abortion and other moral stands. They were also defeated. I just hope that the Tea Party and Christian Evangelicals take over the entire Republic Party and push their strong moral and social agendas – with zero compromises. That way the Democrats will have around 80 seats in the Senate, 350 in the House, and a lock on the presidency for the rest of this century. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus.

        If Homosexuals want to practice sodomy, it is their right. If they expect me to sanction it, they are sorely mistaken. And, again, the government has no authority to force me to.

        If a woman wants to MURDER (thou shalt not kill) her baby, she has that right. If she expects me to support and or sanction it, she is wrong. And, again, the government has no authority to force me to.

        GOD gives you the RIGHT to CHOOSE whether you do right or wrong, good or evil. GOD will judge you on your actions and either reward you or punish you.

        The rights GOD gives you are the same as your freedoms and liberties. If you exercise your rights (freedom and liberties) in accordance with the law, you are good to go. If you dont then you have to suffer the consequences.

        I will not suffer the consequences of another persons decision to break the law of GOD.

Dem’s subsequent and predictable pandering to buy votes with other people’s money just won them another election. The American way is “carry your own weight and behave yourself and the government will leave you alone.” Obviously more than half the voters don’t share that philosophy. A new party will not change the people. Only massive, Darwinian conditions will separate the patriots from the takers. It is coming. The dollar daily loses value. Gas, heat, bread are on the rise. The party in power can’t endlessly print fiat currency without inflation.

      You are correct. The Monday morning quarterbacking in the GOP is trying to appoint self blame when the real issue, as you point out, is the growth of the “dependency class”. Add to that the special interest groups – LGBT, environmentalists, racists, etc. – and you have a majority coalition. Now who among those groups should the GOP pursue? ….. Learn to stand up for yourselves and fully defend your position. People will always choose a lower standard because it’s easier. It’s human nature. The quality is better on the higher ground because it’s worth the fight. It’s the compromise that makes us weaker. Standing without compromise for what is right is what gives us integrity. Conservatives need to learn how to respond to the manipulative talk by the left and stand their ground. That integrity will go farther than trying to apease an opponent.

    I have been saying the very same thing for months (if not years). If the Republican Party is to be relevant (or even survive), it must reconnect with “average” Americans and shed its current image as a bunch of rich, white, intolerant Christians. In my opinion, this was the Republicans election to lose or lose and they did it magnificently. Obama is probably one of the worst Presidents ever and still managed to pull victory from defeat with help from the Republican Party. Mitt Romney had to be one of the most divisive candidates in recent history and there were even Republicans that weren’t going to vote for him because of his religious beliefs, stands on certain topics, and of course, the fact that he seemed “above it all”. There are approximately 55 million registered Republicans, 72 million registered Democrats, and 41 million registered Independents in this country. See the pattern here ? Without getting the vote of the middle (Indepedents), the republicans are fighting a losing battle. I can’t believe their “experts” can’t see this and couldn’t come up with a platform that appealed to more Americans and a candidate that more Americans could connect with.

Truth be told, the top democrats have much, much more money than the Republicans, they just have somehow convince the so called poor that they are on their side, because they like to take from us that work and have, and give it to the lazy sob’s that dont want to work. And yes, that is a fact. A stone cold hard fact. Over 90 percent of the so called poor, are that way by their choice, to smoke, drink and be merry and not work for a living. Sorry, those are not poor to me, and they are not deserving to have my money taken from me and given to them. I give away over 10 percent of my money every week, every year, and I am the one that needs to be the judge of where that goes and who the poor are, not the governement dictatating to me where they are going to spend it and give it to.     and nn my opinion. the only reason the USA is not in recession like in Europe is because of the Federal Reserve pumping money/credit into the USA economy but unless the hard headed Republicans dont play ball by lifting the debt ceiling and allow tax increases without program cuts, then I’m afraid the unemployment rate will head to spanish levels if not similar to Greek levels.

    Mitt Romney [not a bad guy really,] said he could do better to reduce unemployment…he was delusional in my opinion because in my opinion Obama had done a stirling job with the Federal Reserve to keep it at those current levels, but it wont last if the Republicans continue and want to destroy the USA credit rating. It was irresponsible in the extreme what they did last year and I’m affraid the ego of that guy John Boehner who made America look like a bunch of kindegarten kids….a totally irresponsible act to gain political brownie points…..and i bet the smirk on his face yesterday says we going to get more of the same.

    The reality is that we with money and assets always end up being responsible to pay for deficits sooner or later as the poor cant pay which afterall they get their income from government handouts paid through taxes or borrowings.     The Republicans wanted to have more ships than the USA had 70 years ago, when technology has since taken over warfare needing less ships and more aircraft carriers and drones, more satelittes etc and the Republicans wanted Obama to beat his chest more and threaten more people instead of using more diplomatic methods.

    These are some of the reasons why the Republicans lost, not because anyone thought Obama was perfect…just better for the times we are in these days. So I implore the Republicans to think of your country first. not your silly egos and agree to lifting the debt ceiling without trying to blackmail the Democrats to get what you want in lower taxes and programs as it will only lead to grief of the world economic system while trying to beat the President…it will cost us all dearly..

      How is borrowing more money we cannot repay going to save America’s credit rating? Answer: it won’t, it will only hasten the crash. But that is exactly what the Democrats will do. The crash is coming, the only question is whether we step on the gas or step on the brakes to reduce the damage. The Republicans want to use the brakes, while the Democrats want to use the accelerator because they deny there is a real problem.

      I don’t care how great your military technology is, if you need global coverage by your navy, you need more than a handful of ships. As big as an aircraft carrier is, it doesn’t have room for a large rack of surface to air or anti-ship missiles, and it cannot protect itself from enemy submarines 24/7 in all weather. A carrier does not travel by itself; it needs a combat escort group for defense. This would be several missile cruisers and anti-submarine ships (you can’t get by with one of each; it’s too easy to saturate one ship with multiple attacks). Sometimes cruise missiles are the most economical means to attack a target, so you need a ship for that also. But cruise missiles are still a million bucks a pop, while large artillery shells are only about 10-30 grand, so naval artillery is the cheapest means of delivering ordnance to shore-based or sea targets under 30 miles range. That function again needs a specialized ship design; it’s not practical for a carrier.

      All of this cannot stay at sea for long without supplies. It’s not practical to ship all of a fleet’s aircraft fuel, ammunition, food, spare parts, etc. by air (very expensive), so you need transport ships. These may also need a defensive escort to and from the carrier group. All of this works out to at least 15-20 ships per carrier.

      Besides all that, we have amphibious landing groups (you can’t center these around a single ship), helicopter carrier groups, submarines and littoral combat vessels. Ships need maintenance in port from time to time, and combat losses are a part of war, so we should have some spares. A figure of 311 ships is not unreasonably large for a global naval power; in World War II we had more than that number participating in the Okinawa landing.

      If you want to debate how much global coverage we need, go ahead. But don’t put our sailors and ships at unnecessary risk by sending them out without adequate resources to do the job and come back alive.

    The conservatives need to have a Alternative way of Life that can be defined beyond just saying they will give you a Job , like Romney said over and Over without any meat on that bone describing what that Job would entail .         I am against abortion as birth control, which it mostly is. But, with counseling & education as part of an assessment program, I would allow for the mother to choose in the case of rape or incest. BUT, the Mom needs to have ALL the info in those cases before she decides.

        I even have the gall to say that if abortion is gonna stand, then informed consent & ultra sound pictures should be added to the grisly program.         Women who abort their babies that don’t feel any of the above…God help them.

        Also women should be informed that post abortion they may also suffer physical trauma, like bareness. They should be told that sometimes women die as well.

Do I think there should be programs in place for people who truly want to change their lives or who had something bad happen and they need a little help for awhile yes but the problem is too many people today think that they should just sit back and not do anything to change their lives and expect everyone else to pay for it.

        Obama is a President who thinks that we should work and pay for people who just want to sit on their butts and do nothing. I am not for that. I worked for the government. I hated it and got out. Everyone thought it was such a good job. Well I saw way too many people who think they are entitled in the government. They worked just hard enough to get their paycheck. The wouldn’t learn anything new, they treated the people they were supposed to be working for like trash. They came and went as they liked and when they got themselves in trouble then they went to the Union and the Union fought for their job. I got tired of seeing people do little and expect alot.

        I would work in the private sector any day than work for the government. I am tired of people crying about not getting a job. There are jobs out there but people don’t want to do them. They feel they are too good for them.

        We need a President who will stand up and make the hard decisions. The problem is we have so many bleeding hearts that think we should save every one. WE can help people by teaching them what they can do for themselves not just give them whatever they want.

        All I can do now is pray for the country, The President, the people in government. If we do not change our ways we definitely are on a road of destruction.

          Yes, Jesus did teach tolerance, but He also taught justice. When he was in the temple on the Sabbath,and the merchants were selling their wares, Jesus began turning over the tables and disrupting their sales. Tolerance only goes so far when you are flaunting God’s commandments.

          By the way, Jesus also said an interesting quote that very few people know. It is in L uke Chapter 23 verses 28 through 31 when Jesus was carrying the cross on the road to His death. He stopped to speak to the women by the side of the road and said “Daughters of Jerusalem;, weep not over me,; but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

    Are you serious? I think the marriage of church and state is always a bad idea. Look at England or Europe over the last 5-6 centuries. I also think Christians should not confuse conservatism with biblical Christianity. However, if you think for one minute that liberals don’t impose their their moral and religious worldview at the ballot box, in the education system, in the media, in our family life, in the scientific community, across “vast swaths of society” you are delusional. And don’t tell me that secular humanists aren’t inherently religious. Humans are inescapably religious. They may create their own gods, but they will worship something.

    Most conservatives that I know oppose abortion because they know it is murder, and believe it is the State’s, God mandated authority to protect life. Rampant, promiscuous homosexuality is usually associated with collapsing empires and while we don’t seek to persecute homosexuals we see state sponsored approbation of it as being detrimental to society. Of course that automatically makes us racist, sexist, homophobic, neanderthals in some people’s small minds.

    The problem with the Republican party is that is has patronized moral people for decades and then flipped them off once they achieved power. On the other hand, Libertarians are knowingly or unknowingly sitting at the alter of Aleister Crowley. “Do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law” was his mantra. Of course they will add, “as longs as it does no harm to anyone” but then, who gets to define what “harm” is? So, “libertarian-izing” the Republican party will just corrupt it more than it already is.

    I guess what it all comes down to is this. The political system in America is broken because it is full of corrupt, self serving sociopaths. Divorcing all moral imperatives from the party will just get you a more corrupt and dangerous party. Is there any hope? Yes, for those who have ears to hear…

    The facts are that the demographics in this country are changing so fast that it may not be possible for a real Conservative to win a national election from here on out. With Blacks and Hispanics solidly in the Democratic corner, and Whites dividing their votes among the candidates, each election cycle means that there is going to be less conservatives around to vote. Lastly, as far as reaching out to Blacks and other minority groups, with Blacks again voting almost 95% for the brother, one can obviously see that it was more than anything else about skin color. How else can you explain any group of people voting for one candidate? It obviously wasn’t his record.

      Your right Bill….I was a life long working class Democrat, before the Obama era. I voted for Mitt for economic change. I see the country I love, that my family has fought for generations going down the toilet, too many young people are unemployed or working for minimun wage. While illegal and legal immigrants are now getting good jobs. Obama’s policies have failed, this election should have been a slam dunk, the focus should have been on economic issues.

    I agree with this article. I only voted for mitt because he was not Obama. The traditional republican party is dead. People are not buying the moral compass that they project. It is time for all working, productive people to rally around third party candidates such as Gary Johnson.

    What will happen in the future is that job opportunities will be far less, unless you get a public sector job or are an illegal immigrant, and anyone with any assets will be targeted as the rich and will have to work to protect those assets from the government thieves who will to give them to the unproductive.

    Maybe people will wake up before it is too late but I doubt it

    I am a fiscal and social conservative and I somewhat agree with this article. However, athough no one is being forced to have an abortion, I as a taxpayer, am being forced to pay for them. That is where I have to draw the line and where social and fiscal issues cannot be separated.

    Unfortunately, two people are involved, Mother and Child. The Child is indeed forced to undergo an abortion against his/her will.

    As a Christian first, and then libertarian where it fits, I can give you gay marriage, marijuana use, smoking, drinking, adultery as so-called “harmless” vices, but the murder of an innocent is just as repulsive whether in or out of a womb. The “rights of the mother to her own body” must of be respected, but when they take the life of another, it has gone beyond a mere preference or inconvenience.

    This has all been debated for decades. It still boils down to whether the child IS or IS NOT a living human. I claim that what we believe has no effect on 1) what actually IS, or 2) what the Creator knows and enforces.

    Both sides can’t be RIGHT.

    The title of this article reveals a faulty premise. It was George Washington who said that “religion and morality are indispensable” to the liberty of a nation. The Republican Party will no longer be the party of the moral people of this country if it sides with the communist democrat party that half of its citizens do not prize morality as necessary principles of freedom. The Republican Party may sell out its constituents if it so desires, but it will be left without supporters. Forsaking morality is siding with the godless communists who think that they are “progressives’. This is very bad advice. If becoming amoral is necessary to winning an election, then let it go the way of communism.

      It was a close election. This nation is deeply divided. I see a lot of claims that the two parties are the same, but they are not. Their moral positions are vastly different.

      Indeed, the very issues the author of this article says we should have focussed on are moral issues. Chief among those is the national debt. Borrowing money with no clear plan to repay is equivalent to stealing from the lender. Entailing the debt onto the next generation is stealing from the children. Buying votes with welfare programs is bribery (“I want my ObamaPHONE!” – who can listen to that without disgust?). Taking tax money to buy the votes is robbery. Targeting the wealthy for higher tax rates is based on covetousness.

      No, the Republican Party may be nearly powerless for the next two years, but it is hardly irrelevant.

    I have been saying the same thing in every gop poll I have gotten for years, get the moral issues out of the party objectives.Even God doesn’t legislate morality, he gave free will. Morality comes from each person and God will judge then for their choices, it is not man’s job to legislate it, only to carry the message. The only way for that to be done effectively is through a limited government which does not intrude on personal choices and free speech. That means a conservative government, as the left only believes in free speech if it agrees with them.while I whole heartedly believe in spreading God’s word as an individual, government has no place in doing so, therefore the gop and conservatives as a whole have no business making these issues a part of their plank each year. Morality is not morality if it is legislated, then it is simply law morality must come from the heart to hold value with God.

    I hate to disagree with the posting of this article. Like right I will disagree all the way. A person does not have to push their moral or religious views on others. However, there is the question of what does one use for a moral compass?
    In todays’ society legality and morality have become alomost mutually exclusive of each other. Just because something is legal does not make it moral. Situational ethics is how we run business and politics nowdays. You can have no trust in people or systems that employ those methods. That is just a part of the reasons that we as a nation have lost trust in our “leaders” and idols. Our ability to make sound decisions rests not on the legality of anything. It rests on our morals to guide us as to whether something isright or wrong. I am a Christian and I use the Bible as a guiding force in my life. I am not perfect so sometimes I really need a lot of help. Humanism offers no hope or gidance as to the morality of anything. It does not allow for trust and confidence that one must have to grow relationships.
    No now more than ever we need a moral compass and I hope a Biblical worldview would be the one that wins. Nevertheless legality without morality will only end up with a bigger mess than we are in now.

      That’s exactly right, daniel! Capitalism cannot exist without morality. The Soviet system collapsed because its people could not trust each other, and the Russian economy lags far behind its potential because the people still do not trust each other. Trust is an essential ingredient for efficient trade. If you cannot buy gold without reasonable assurance you aren’t getting a plated block of tungsten instead, you would be reluctant to hand over your resources to the gold seller without a lot of expensive testing.

      But property is not the only subject of morality. Sexual immorality distorts the market. It spreads costly diseases and forces the diversion of resources to the medical sector. It causes psychological and relational problems that hamper the social interactions so necessary to a thriving economy. (For example, the whole issue of workplace sexual harassment, real or imagined, is a distraction and diversion of resources stemming from sexual permissiveness.) Sexual immorality creates most of the market for contraceptives – consumables which provide no positive value. Moreover, the pharmaceutical types are destructive beyond their function, for the metabolites cause reproductive problems for fish in the rivers downstream of metropolitan sewage treatment plants.

      A pattern of sexual immorality distorts the demographics of the nation in a very negative way. Society is at its best when children are raised in a family bound by marriage of the parents, but children raised in single-parent homes do more poorly in school, are more likely to abuse drugs and engage in criminal activity, are less productive as adults and far more likely to be welfare dependents. Many women try to avoid the problem by killing their children in abortion mills, and wound themselves psychologically and spiritually (aside from the medical risks).

      The abandonment of marriage and consequent reduction in the number of children being raised to be productive members of society has a long-term economic consequence for this generation. Social Security and Medicare are inherently pyramid schemes. One of the primary reasons they are so laden with unfunded liabilities is that there are not enough workers in their prime earnings years; one-third of them were killed in the first decade following the Roe v. Wade decision. Consequently, we are top-heavy with retirees. Too many of them spent their live partying instead of providing for their retirement either through savings or the next generation. It is difficult to maintain a prosperous economy in this situation.

      The notion that we can have a decent economic and political system without morality is simply absurd. Immorality has unhappy consequences in the here and now as well as the hereafter.

    Well, Sam, here is the problem with your viewpoint. Fiscal conservatism (which is all that would differentiate Republicans from Democrats in your ideal view) is itself at heart a moral issue. Why not spend money you don’t have. Why not take money from those who have and redistribute it to those who don’t? The reasons for doing or not doing these things are moral arguments. There are no pure fiscal arguments used by either side, which is fortunate because pure fiscal arguments lead to a lot of things like infanticide, euthanasia, and genocide.

    The real reason Republicans are losing political battles is that the people they wish to govern no longer hold to Judeo-Christian values as they did in the past. The answer to that is to change people, not the party. Todd Friel gives a good summary in less than 6 minutes here:

    I understand the sentiment, but you are looking only at one side of the coin. Certainly the “Moral Crusading”, as you call it, is turning off voters that would otherwise support the GOP. But it is just as certainly attricting voters who would otherwise support Democrats. Many opponents of abortion and same-sex marriage are also supporters of government enforced social justice.

    The GOP needs to change their ways if they ever want to win the Presidency again. They did Ron Paul wrong, and then they wouldn’t even “allow” any of the 3rd party candidates to debate with them. That ticked some of us off. Romney wasn’t a strong enough person to go up against O-bummer. Plus voter fraud was allowed to happen too. People were voting for Romney but the machines defaulted to Obama, some people were allowed to vote more than once if they were going to be voting for Obama. Our Presidential elections are far from being fair. I’m not even sure if I want to vote again the next time around, or maybe I will switch my registry to one of the 3rd parties for next time.

    It is my humble opinion, which happens to fly in the face of this author, that it is not prudent to set aside ANY moral standards just to win an election. The problem lies in the fact that not enough people have the courage of their moral convictions; the problem lies in the fact that not enough religious leaders bring biblical principles to their people soon enough and often enough. The problem lies in the fact that we have allowed immorality to exist without challenging it. Gov. Romney exuded moral principles – this is not a failure but an asset. The reality is that we have allowed God to be taken out of the equation and we will never recover until we restore Him.

      Hatred, self-righteousness, etc. work very well for Democrats – you don’t have to listen very long to hear Barack Obama and his friends vilify “the millionaires and billionaires” and Republicans in general. The “Throwing Granny Over the Cliff” television advertisement was the very essence of self-righteous lying about the opposition to generate hatred.     I am an example of the GOP’s problem. Registered and raised a Republican (about 65 yrs ago) this WASP is still fiscally conservative, but I’m socially moderate like most of my friends.

    We continue to be repelled by the holier-than-thou baloney being espoused by the “modern GOP” and thus we voted for the party which does not try to control our moral beliefs. We will continue to do so.

You seem to think that you can separate the faith of Christians from the faith in the US Constitution…good luck with that. In any case, Republicans wouldn’t be in the situation they are, as good as it is, without the evangelic vote and the Tea Party. Why don’t we just withdraw all that support and watch the REAL RINOs flounder in their own feces? BTW…you can’t ask people of faith to put that faith aside for politics because their allegiances are to God and Jesus first, not the Republican Party, and the sooner the party gets THAT through their head, the better.

While most Americans do identify themselves as religious or spiritual, Fundamentalist Christians make up a relatively small percentage of them. Otherwise, wouldn’t Aiken and Mourdock have won easily on Tuesday instead of being trounced by their opponents? Claire McCaskill was as weak and vulnerable as should could possibly have been, and Aiken couldn’t beat her. Obviously his hard-core Christian supporters don’t have the electoral clout they think they have.

    Of course you are 100% correct Mr. Rolly. Government is not about religion. It is about protecting the God-given right to the pursuit of happiness. The founding fathers may have been very religious men, but they were very careful to be Libertarian in the founding documents of this great nation. I don’t know what percentage of Americans are Christian, but I do know that using government to impose Christian values on non-Christians is no more justified than redistributing wealth through taxation. We are a nation of laws and Christians who want to ensure that other Americans live by Christian values can accomplish that by enacting laws that reflect those values and having government enforce those laws. Period. Religion belongs nowhere else in government. And as long as Republicans continue to think that they can dictate their religious values outside of established law, this country has NO chance to stop its financial destruction by the Democrats with their socialist values.

    I don’t disagree on the importance of morality, BUT I do disagree that it is the job of government to impose or enforce a code of morality. True Conservatism stands for the priniciple of minimal intrusion of Government into the lives of its citizens. Period.

    In historical context, Conservatives were the “strict constructionists”, who believed that the power of the federal government was limited to the strict letter of the dlegated powers spelled out in the Constitution. No more; no less.

    In historical context, Liberals were the “loose constructionists”, who believed that, while the power of the federal government originated with the delegated powers spelled out in the Constitution, that those delegated powers were merely “guidelines” subject to “interpretation” with changing times.

    Teaching morality is the job of parents and their freely chosen religious institutions. If you as parents can’t raise your children with a strong moral center, respect for the person, property, and beliefs of others, etc., then no amount of laws or government regulation will be able to “fix” the problem. If you as parents abdicate your sacred responsibility to raise your children to be moral, upstanding citizens, you shouldn’t expect someone else (least of all a meddlesome and intrusive government) to do it for you.

What some people out there fail to realize is that the people of this country do not want the government telling them what to think, and while I consider myself a moral person, I do not want the government telling me that either.

      How did you manage to live this long without realizing that the imposition of morality is the very essence of government? “… all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men …” This was a part of American governing philosophy from its beginning; the quote is from the Declaration of Independence.

      Who is responsible for setting trade standards to prevent people from stealing through dishonest measures? Government. Who is responsible for punishing thieves, kidnappers, murderers etc. so others will be deterred from preying on their fellows? Government. Who is responsible for prohibiting the irresponsible disposal of waste so we can all enjoy clean air, water and soil? Government. All of these are impositions of a moral code.

      The question is not whether government should impose morality, but at which level it is best to do so. Under the legal construction of our government, states would have the responsibility for laws against murder, including against abortion on demand, and the Federal government would only have the power to see that the laws are in place and enforced equitably (as per the 14th Amendment). However, the Federal government is actually blocking laws against abortion, and many federal politicians, including Mr. Obama, promote abortion with their insistence that it be made available at the expense of other people. Thus we have a far more serious problem – the Federal imposition of immorality upon the people.

        The problem with giving government the power to legislate morality is the very slippery slope it creates. For example, in the extreme it would provide a valid legal basis for a community within the US to impose Shariah Law on its populace if they could get enough Muslims or sympathizers elected to the town council.

        One of the prime motivations for the original settlers in this land was to escape religious persecution in the Old World. Such persecution was usually carried out in the name of an official state religion, such as the Church of England, or the Spanish Inquisition conducted by the Catholic Church. Anyone deemed a “heretic” or dissident would be imprisoned and tortured until they died or renounced their faith. THAT is what you get when you mix religion and government. Kinda like most of the Middle East is today. And quite frankly, I don’t hear a whole lot of difference between the intolerant rantings of Fundamentalist Christians and those of Fundamentalist Muslims like the ruling Mullahs in Iran. They both seem to be on the same page on many social issues.

        The whole point of the “Freedom of Religion” provision in the First Amendment was to give people the right to worship as they pleased, without government imposing any kind of religious standard upon them. Morality is a spiritual issue and a character issue, NOT a legal issue. Yes, our Founding Fathers were Christians, and based many of our original laws on Christian principals, BUT they also very clearly established a separation of Church and State for the path to the future. Government should not meddle in religion, and likewise religion should not meddle in government. Both have valid places in peoples lives, but should never mix.

        As stated in my previous post, it is the job, in fact the OBLIGATION, of parents to ingrain a sense of morality and decency on their children when raising them, NOT the government’s. To instill in them a respect for others, including those who be exercising their Constitutional right to believe differently.

        And to many of the posters here…ever heard the old saying about “preaching to the choir”? The only people battling alongside you are already believers in your cause. You will not win any converts on a political blog by quoting scripture. If you can’t make your case in secular terms, you are truly only “preaching to the choir” as everyone else tunes you out. And THAT is the point that Sam Rolley was attempting to make with this article. For the party to survive and thrive, Republicans MUST be welcoming and inclusive, NOT judgmental and divisive. Morality can be used effectively to SHAPE policy, but it should not BE policy.

We have been and should continue to be the stalwart of morality in this country, just like in the founding of this country. Our founding fathers were Christians, don’t think so then do yourself a favor and research it you will be very surprised at how strongly they pointed to their Christian faith in developing the United States. Remove the morality plank from the republicans and you will immediately create a third party, the non-moral thinking of the new republican party will vanish from existence or struggle to be something without any chance in the world to be elected to anything.

      Steve; I am sincerely of the opinion that if the Romney/Ryan team had softened their stance on Abortion and on Same Sex marriage,if they had proclaimed that ALL PEOPLE, MEN, WOMEN, GAY OR STRAIGHT were created EQUAL and that they should all be treated the same and have the same rights, whether it be in payroll or in their private lives, most likely we would have a REPUBLICAN in the White House.

      Instead they had to push their agenda of THEIR view of MORALITY on everyone else, and that will never work in an educated society.     I have spent several hours reading through all of the comments. and trying to get some idea what you all think about the issues. I am the enemy because I am not conservative, libertarian, neo-con, Republican and generally would be called a liberal. I do not believe the Old Testament but have tried to figure out how it got such a grasp over peoples’ thinking. Since it was written down by an ancient people from whom most of us are not biologically closely related, it is rather odd to find Western Europeans, Australian aborigines, Asian Thais and many other diverse peoples from wherever under the spell of the rather muddled, barbaric and illogical stories these obviously ethnocentric and despised tribes wrote down and labeled the word of God.. Today we would call them Middle Eastern Judeo-Christian myths. I have been exposed to other religions but the main influences has been Christian and Buddhist.
    I consider myself to be a pantheist and my morality generally could be boiled down to the Golden Rule. I like Christ’s philosophy and in particular that expressed in the Lord’s Prayer.
    To me the whole hangup about abortion and homosexuality is what has gradually been isolating conservative thinkers from the mainstream society. They used to be mainstream when I was up to my thirties in the late ’70s to 1980′s but things changed at different rates and in different places.
    I believe in birth control and the morning after pill because there is no evidence of any form of abortion at that stage. Although I am in favor of the woman’s right to choose up through the first trimester I think woman have a responsibility to do so as early as possible in order to not offend the sensibilities of others. To me all life is not inviolate or I would have to never consume plants and animals from single cell size through whales and elephants and algae to redwoods as well as other mammals and humans. I believe we should try to preserve some environments where we try not to interfere, in general, so nature can interact without our dominion. We have to control some populations to allow for a good and healthy diversity.
    As a pantheist, I see myself as trapped in this finite body but in theory at least I am you and you are me and we are the Walrus, er, I mean we are everything else. Why do I feel I need a sense of morality then? I was watching a NOVA science show and it confirmed what I suspected. They showed different animals sharing with and releasing other animals in captivity with who they were unrelated. Some were of the same species and others were even of a different species. In other words, empathy may be instinctive and predate our own species’ evolution. Well, why then don’t I believe every fertilized ovum should be nurtured to the end of its natural days? Because our earth cannot sustain all conceptions in a manner that dignifies the potential of that particular creature. We can look at a hoarding type analogy here. The sterotypical cat lady for example who allows her cats to reproduce until their health and sanity are endangered by urea and feces and overcrowding. Nature’s way is to produce in great abundance but the other side of the coin, is that the vast majority reach an early death. To avoid killing each other when life is complex and difficult to give up we need to restrict conception and thus avoid these inhumanely horrible conditions. In my almost 70 years I have seen places of pristine beauty destroyed by our numbers and by our technology which depletes the environment much more quickly that natural humanity would.
    Later, I want to write about my political ideas and it will be based on the belief we need to define our terms and figure out if all these labels are really meaningful or do they even accurately stand for the same thing between different people. Let me say, however, I do agree with the author’s point of view that we need to keep separate our church and state as the founding fathers wrote into the Constitution and also also as the wrote, we need to respect each other’s right to their point of view as long as it does not harm others. I thought 3says made a great point when he wrote: “We should not have to pay for abortions. That’s where I draw the line.”

    Rolley needs to make up his mind! If he wants “to seek truth” as stated in his bio, he must start with the only One who is Truth (Jn 14:6). This is our yardstick by which we measure all truth. To suggest we need a new ‘truth’ to guide us or a different truth will only bring more disasters into our future. The “Moral Crusading” that you detest is not the problem. Our substituting fake morals and destroying of real values for personal gain, has given us a culture that breeds greed, power and prestige. No, we do not need a “new truth”. We do need the “old truth”, as found in the Bible, applied in our living in this day.

    To continue to ignore the source of ALL truth, is to cheat ourselves out of joy, out of peace, and any hope in the future. Real personal LIBERTY is found in Jesus Christ and it has been working for many for 2000 years! Try it, you will be glad you did!

      OH Really! I tried it and I found it to be full of ambiguity. I found the Bible to be full of contradictions.I also found that the Bible that all of you people are so fond of calling God’s word, was written by a bunch of desert dwellers that were both uneducated and illiterate. Yes , some of them may have seen Christ and some of them may have remembered some of the words which Jesus Christ spoke, but to tell me that the Bible is the word of God is pure fallacy.
      Most of the Bible was written long after Jesus Christ was crucified.
      Any organized religion that I have ever been associated with was more about how much money they could get in the collection plate than it was about helping people in need.

      So Please don’t tell me that truth is in your religion.

    There is a very strong association between American governing philosophy and Christianity; the non-Christian conservatives and libertarians notwithstanding. The concept that “all men are created equal” comes from the Bible. As St. Paul put it when preaching to the democrats in Athens, “[God} has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth.” He also wrote, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Here he was referring to the church, but our founding fathers wanted this equality to carry over into society in general.) Likewise, St. James admonished the church not to discriminate against the poor in favor of the rich, for both are equal in the sight of God. The Old Testament moral law prohibited favoring either the rich or the poor in legal matters.

    It is a mistake to rely solely upon the government in moral matters. People must have an understanding of the moral basis of a law, or they will hold it in contempt, and they must have a reason for obeying a law beyond the mere threat of force, otherwise the only way to maintain order is through a police state. Therefore the Church is essential to society. But the Church cannot be an arm of the government, otherwise it is not an independent voice of morality. The Church must be free to speak strong admonitions when the government is lax in its duty, or when the government wrongly imposes laws without a moral basis. This is the reason for the separation of church and state. The church must be independent of the state, but the state must not demand freedom to operate without the influence of the church.

    It is also a mistake to assume that the church can establish morality in society without the government. There will always be people who reject the teachings of the church, particularly in moral matters. It is they who must be held in check by the terror of the state.

    It is no coincidence that the vast majority of American conservatives are also conservative Christians, for traditional, non-”Progressive” American political thought is derived from Christian teachings. It is also no coincidence that most members of liberal churches are politically liberal, for they have watered down both the Law and the Gospel in favor of a feel-good religion of collective works (“social gospel” and “social justice”), and their liberal politics is an imposition of their morality on society. But conservatives must not expect to aid society solely through political action. As I stated earlier, the Church is a key component of a free society. Evangelism is therefore necessary for the widespread acceptance of the principles of conservatism. (That is why most dictatorships impose tight controls on the activities of churches.)

    For an excellent biographical treatise on this issue, read Reaching the Left from the Right: Talking about Social Issues with People Who Don’t Think like You by Barbara Curtis (Beacon Hill Press). Barbara Curtis was in her earlier years a hippie, with all that entailed. After being brought to personal ruin by her behavior, she became a Christian, and with that realized the impracticality of her political liberalism. She explains why many former liberals and communist sympathizers have become our staunchest conservatives.

        I see a lot of comments here about morals and moral judgments. By definition, morals are unchanging – they are a set of standards established in the Bible that help people lead meaningful lives and have safe and trusting relationships. The last 6 of the 10 Commandments are an example of this and you cannot have a meaningful relationship with someone whom you cannot trust to follow those rules. Claiming that morals change is missing the whole point and claiming that those morals don’t apply to society in general is destructive, whether people believe in the Bible or not. You don’t have to accept what I am saying, but be assured that I will not trust you, if you don’t. The other issue is, that none of us is perfect and that we all transgress these moral codes at times. However, that does not make the morals wrong, that makes me wrong, and, if you are a Christian, then there is a way to repent and get our sins forgiven. And, as a Christian, I can tell you that the moral law is valid and unchanging, but I have no right to tell an unbeliever that they must obey the moral law. However, as I said before, I do have the right to not trust someone who is an immoral person, one who thinks that lying or stealing or envying others is OK, rather than a sin that needs to be repented of.

    I read a few comments and am amazed, awed and truely frightened by the great degree of hate and anger from people who claim to be god-abiding and moral. These same affirmed believers in the Lord; Jesus Christ; Christians tauting passages from the Bible are at the same time saying and doing things that are very un-Christian. I am sure I am not alone in my angst about the growing malcontent among these groups of peoples. It is frightening to read such blood-lust in these comments towards those of differing opinions. I read comments written by Republican conservatives who avow their religious piety while at the same instant declare all should be of the same beliefs otherwise they should beware. It is a very sad thing that religious zeal should turn individuals into violence seeking individuals in the name of God. Such behavior is un-Godly and is a sin. It matters not that the objects of non-conformity are of liberal viewpoints who believe that it is wrong to not care about those that are poor and truely need help. The idea of me; mine; is transitory because in the end everyone is judged by their actions, deeds and even thoughts and the selfishness and greed these folks prioritize along with their anger toward others not of their mindset is not right as well and not Christian; but is frightening. Freeloading is not right but neither is hostility. This polarization will only bring about ruin and loss of ones eternal soul. Perhaps divine intervention is coming in the form of climatic disasters with massive loss of life and properties.

That being said, I agree that the Republican party and Mitt Romney did not address the issues that are center stage at this time and that is the economic morass that has been created in the last 4 years.

      What is unfortunately turning more and more people off to the Republican Party is the overtly religious context that Conservative commentary and rhetoric has taken over the past several years. As soon as the conversation begins, a large segment of those listening zone out, dismissing the Conservative speaker as “just another religious wacko”, and thus don’t even hear what valid ideas may be contained in the presentation. While the vast majority of the US population describes themselves as believers, most don’t adhere to the extreme Fundamentalist interpretation of faith. And interpretation is ALL it is, unless and until God Himself comes down and personally clarifies the situation. It is up to each individual to make peace with his/her perception of God and, according to the First Amendment, NO ONE (not government, institution, or individual) has the right to force their beliefs on others.

      Morality and religion are two separate (though overlapping) concepts. It is entirely possible to advocate for a stronger moral center in politics and policy without having the 80% of the population in the center ignore you and your ideas because you are perceived as an intolerant, judgmental religious extremist. Forcing candidates and issues to pass a religious litmus test is self-defeating and counter-productive. Seeking a compassionate non-denominational MORAL component, however, is not. The unpleasant truth is, that for the Republican Party to survive and for true Conservatism to remain viable, they must divorce themselves from the small but very vocal Fundamentalist minority that dictates policy through the “squeaky wheel” principle.

      Our Founding Fathers may have been Christians themselves, but they wisely did not play favorites when embedding freedom of religion in the First Amendment. Look at the fate of all strongly religion-centric governments. How’s “The Holy Roman Empire” doing these days? The only ones remaining are controlled by Islamic extremists, and all are destroying themselves from within (some faster than others) with the inflexibility and intolerance of their doctrine.

    What seems to be missing from the logic behind becoming less moral and more pragmatic is: the two are inexorably tied together One of the great drains on the tax paying members of this society, this “nation” called the United States is that 40% of babies are born to unwed mothers who have no way to support the children except to rely on the gov. There are many, many men running around planting their seed, spawning children they have no intention of supporting. Some men I have known have been responsible for the births of six children, never supporting one. All these “statistics” add up to massive taxes. No, what we need is not abandoning morals, but preaching them much harder,much earlier, and without let up,and making sure candidates who receive support are in agreement. We have to begin in the home, the school, the church and the government. It is not doctrine that is the enemy, it is the wrong doctrine and the immorality that is destroying the world like a growing cancer. Deny it all you want, it is a carved in stone fact. Immorality destroys; peace, prosperity and everything worthwhile in the world.

Women and minorities determine who is elected in this country–not whites, who by the way did not turn out; and did not believe that Hispanics, Blacks, and Women would turn out in far greater numbers, as they will in every election. Whites and conservatives got complacent and did not coalesce around Romney. However, Romney could have won despite the odds, if he had done the following: Never said he did not care about the 47%; never said he was against family planning; never told illegals to self deport; never told Ohio that he did not support the auto bailout; never selected Ryan as a running mate; hammered Aiken and other far-right idiots for their” killing” comments about women and rape–Romeny let his far-right base do him. Liberals delighted in watching Republicans eat their own. Libs are lapping up Rep tears with glee. Romney should have laid out a definite plan for creating jobs. He lost because he did not fight like hell against the Dems charge that “he (Romney) looks like the guy who fired you.” He also lost because he did not fight light a tiger against Obama in the last debate by going after him about Bengzhi, etc; and by jumping around about foreign policy and not being more knowledgeable about foreign policy. Romney lost because he could not aggressively sell America that we would be the better choice and would create jobs and grow the economy and help all Americans. He should have waited 4 more years to run,because beating a very popular, well-liked incumbent is nearly impossible no matter how great your campaign. Bad judgement on Romney’s part. So bad, that it seems that he intentionally wanted to lose.
    Although, Romney had class and looked wonderfully presidential, he did not deserve election because he showed poor judgement by his actions and decisions and timidity against Obama in the debates. Obama is a very smart, very tough guy and Romney was not prepared for him and his dirty, street-smart and ruthless political machine. Obama does not play nice and is the nastiest politician when necessary. Romney should have counter punched much more effectively. He underestimated Obama who played weak in the first debate. If Republicans ever hope to win, they must develop a way to reach out to others who are not like them. They must work out a fair and humane immigration policy while enacting border control. For example, a immigrants must serve in the military; go to college, develop needed skills, not commit felonies, and live here and be good citizens for 12 years or leave; that will narrow the field. Sadly, Obama will grant blanket amnesty. Sadly, that is why more conservative Replicans should have been intelligent enough to side with Romney even if he was too moderate because they could have pushed him to the right later on. We must control the numbers who come into this country if we are to have enough jobs for everyone; especially in this economy.

I was furious, and back then the news commentators exhorted moral crusaders to understand that morality could not be legislated. However, here we are over 30 years later, and true to what they were told in the late 1970s, they have made no headway whatsoever. They haven’t even gotten Planned Parenthood defunded. I finally realized that the Christian movement was infiltrated with Communists, and that is why they keep doing these crazy things. The Christians have no idea they are being lied to and lead in the wrong direction. Poor dears! The Evangelical Christian Leaders uphold Socialism, and that is what kills the Christian churches. The Evengelical church membership needs to educate themselves because they are being lied to. The Evangelicals need to overthrow their leadership, and start off o a clean new course to State’s Rights. All they have to do is to push for State’s Rights to get what they want, but I fear they are such control freaks that giving other people freedom cannot be abided. I am an Evangelical Christian, but I find the political views of my fellow church members difficult to swallow.

    Morality is very important. However, not as part of the national agenda where it will cause the party to lose. The moral majority has become the moral minority due to a cultural shift. What we need is to pay down the deficit, create good-paying jobs, border control, a rational immigration policy where the number of those allowed to stay is equal to the available jobs. Problem enters when illegals are educated they do not want to work the jobs no one else wants. So we do need to control the numbers and entitlements to non ciitzens and make it less desirable to come here: 2 child limit; no birth naturalization, no felony or assault record; no DWI records, etc.; military service required, English proficiency required, etc. Republicans must focus on the economy, jobs, earned benefits like Medicare and Medicaid that are Not entitlements because they are paid into by employees that are US citizens; funding Social Security and Medicaid; if Republicans say vouchers they are doomed, especially in this very tough economy where inflation and taxes are givens and senior salaries are most impacted. Republicans must focus on empowering middle-class U.S. citizens who want to work, and doing what they can within reason for the poor and immigrants. We must not put our own citizens last in line and we must shout down and refuse false charges of racism and inhumanity that prevent us from protecting our citizens. It is inhumane to flood another country and take what their citizens have. Mexico must be empowered to employ its own people so they will stop sending their population up here. Remember, this is a population that breeds geometrically and we alredy have more immigrants than we can support without adding substanially to the massive debt of of the US. We have let eggheads and pencil pushers from elite dictate what we will do and this must stop. The GOP must redefine itself in relevant conservative terms. It must also rid itself of progressives and Democrats in disguise and right-wing extremists like Aiken who will bring it down for their own selfish reasons.

      Morality issues are PEOPLE issues, both at the state and the federal level. The federal and state level are so integrated today that if you relegate moral issues to the state level, the immoral will beat you at the federal level.

    Seriously, I do not believe you understand the Republican Party. They do not want conservatives. They do not want the grassroots tea party-minded people. They do not stand for anything but advancing Obama’s agenda. Do you want them to leave God out of the platform? Well, they eliminated the grassroots out of the last one and the grassroots is basically the conservative wing. The Republican Party needs to go conservative but social issues need not change but be defined better. This go around, as every one in recent memory, was defined by the birth control..women’s issues, medicare..blah blah.

    I submit to you that the only way to change this party is to leave it. They want our money, they want our hard work for their candidates, they want our votes, but they don’t want us. Leave them! Starve the Pig! Perhaps if enough leave and they start to have a financial struggle, they will wake up. The next 4 years for the GOP will be led by 4 RINO leaders who will not lead but cave. LEAVE THIS PARTY!!! SEND THEM A MESSAGE!!
