Report: Donald Rumsfeld Lies About Saddam Hussein, Al-Qaida And 9/11 In Errol Morris Documentary

Filmmaker Errol Morris caught former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld telling lies about some very serious subject matter in his documentary In “The Unknown Known.”

In the movie, Morris reportedly shows Rumsfeld lying about Saddam Hussein, al-Qaida and 9/11.

The title of the film is taken from Rumsfeld’s response when he was asked about the merit of Bush Administration reports that Iraq was supplying weapons of mass destruction to terrorists.

“There are (known) knowns, things you know you know,” Rumsfeld said at the time. “There are known unknowns, the things you know you don’t know. But then there’s that third category, and those are the unknown unknowns.”

In a clip from the documentary, Rumsfeld is questioned about why the Bush Administration tried to implicate Saddam Hussein in the 9/11 attacks.

“Oh, I don’t think so,” Rumsfeld said. “It was very clear that the direct planning for 9/11 was done by Osama bin Laden’s people, al-Qaida, and in Afghanistan. I don’t think the American people were confused about that.”

A review in the Star-Ledger provides more detail about that portion of the documentary:

“Rumsfeld’s insistence that he never suggested Saddam Hussein had links to Al-Qaeda is followed by a press-conference clip proving that to be a lie; his assertion that no one ever suggested that Gitmo tactics were exported to other facilities is upended by an official report saying the precise opposite.”

The film is currently playing in New York.
