Reform ‘crucial’ For Cairo, London Says

CAIRO, July 28 (UPI) — It is “crucial” that fundamental political reform continues in Egypt, though those reforms are expected to take time, a visiting British official said.

Egyptian military authorities who took control of the country following the Egyptian revolution early this year are preparing for elections and constitutional reforms.

Protesters have reoccupied the central square in Cairo to express frustration with the pace of the reforms.

British Middle East and North African Minister Alistair Burt in a statement marking his arrival in Cairo said the Egyptian people have ushered in an extraordinary opportunity for reform.

“It is crucial that this is seized and there is fundamental reform,” he said. “But this will take time and there are significant obstacles to overcome, not least those posed by Egypt’s economy.”

He added that London was ready to support Egypt during the transition.

Protesters have expressed frustration over justice for members of the former regime of Hosni Mubarak, who was ousted after serving nearly three decades in power.

Egyptian officials said Thursday that Mubarak would stand trial in Cairo. He’s been hospitalized in Sharm el-Sheik since he was forced to step down in February. He and members of his inner circle are accused of having a role in the killing of unarmed protesters during the revolution.
