Record Number Of Americans Think Government Is Broken

September 27, 2011 by

Record Number Of Americans Think Government Is Broken

According to a new poll released by Gallup, 81 percent of Americans are displeased with government leadership.

In what Gallup attributes to shared leadership in failure among Republicans and Democrats in Washington, partisans on both sides are disgusted with their party. In addition, 65 percent of Democrats and 95 percent of Republicans disapprove of President Barack Obama and his counterparts.

According to the poll’s results: 82 percent of Americans think Congress is inept; 69 percent have little or no faith in the legislative branch — an all-time high; 57 percent believe that government cannot solve domestic issues; 43 percent believe government muddles international relations; and 53 percent say they lose trust in individuals who simply hold or seek office.

The survey also found that the majority of Americans believe the Federal government wastes an average of 51 cents of every tax dollar that it collects. About half (49 percent) of Americans believe that while wasting tax money, the Federal government has been allowed to grow so large that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens. Only 30 percent of Americans held this view seven years ago.

Gallup says the latest results of all-time lows in public trust of the government are a result of a decade-long slide in public faith in their leaders. The survey contends that the “bottom line” is:

“Americans’ various ratings of political leadership in Washington add up to a profoundly negative review of government — something that would seem unhealthy for the country to endure for an extended period. Nevertheless, with another budget showdown looking inevitable and a contentious presidential election year getting underway, it appears the ratings reviewed here could get worse before they improve.”

New numbers of American disgust come just about exactly one month after Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul said on national television that the Federal government’s practices are going to lead to widespread social unrest in America.

There is only one solution among the Republican presidential candidates — Ron Paul.

As far as Congress goes, even the majority of so-called Tea Party candidates failed us with the Debt Ceiling vote. We need to face the fact that the Republican Leaders have their hands in the till almost as much as the Democrat Leaders.
There is only one real choice if you want to get our country back. Vote Libertarian — For Freedom, For Peace, For Prosperity:

Ron Paul is not what America needs, anyone that believes that Iran should have Atomic bombs is a total FOOL!!!!!!!!

      • Bob Livingston

        Dear Bill Cook,

Ron Paul never said “Iran should have Atomic bombs.” You are either a neocon plant, a military-industrial complex stooge or a victim of mainstream media dumbing down. To learn what Ron Paul really believes in relation to foreign policy, go to If you continue to blather on with nonsense such as you have without checking the facts, then you will demonstrate that you are the fool.

        Best wishes,

Bob , I went to the link you provided and found no statement on Iran’s nukes either for or against them by Mr. Paul.
Your rant and name calling remind me of Obama’s socialist followers chants of racisms and Nazis against people
who have different views then their own. As far as I know Rep. Paul has not when into detail about what he would do
to stop them from getting them. Sanctions have not and will not work ,nor can the U.N. do anything to stop it.
Please inform us what he plans to do about Iran’s nukes.

          • Bob Livingston

            Dear joe1cr,

What Ron Paul has said is that it is not our business whether Iran obtains nuclear weapons, and that our presence in the Middle East only encourages Iran to pursue them. Plus, several of their neighbors have them, so it is only natural that they would want them. Iran has no delivery system for nuclear weapons, no air force or no navy sufficient to attack us and therefore poses no threat to us. Using the logic that we should attack a country because it is pursuing nuclear weapons, then we should attack Iran, Syria, Venezuela and many other countries. Currently, North Korea has nuclear weapons and is ruled by a homicidal dictator, so we should also attack them, using the logic of the neocons who want to make war on everyone around the globe. We can no longer afford to police the world. The link I provided details Paul’s philosophy on foreign policy. You can also go here:

It’s true that it not our business but it is sure Israel’s business and would rapidly become our business.

But that’s the cleverness of Ron Paul that many seen to over look. He has a non-pretentiousness manner about him. A thoughtful man that is not predisposed to knee-jerk response.

For the record, he would state openly that a sovereign nation can do as it pleases without holding a stick over their head. But that doesn’t mean that the stick is not there or there won’t be consequences for decisions made.

Ron Paul’s approach to matters seems to be in line with the “good husband” approach.

      • Steve

Ron Paul believes that Israel and their 30 nukes can defend themselves. Look at what they did against 3 other countries in the 1967 war. I think he has a point. People need to figure out what makes our country great. Here’s some multiple choice answers.

        A. God
        B. Our U.S. Constitution
        C. Obamacare
        D. Disneyland

        Personaly I think it’s B.

        • http://?? Joe H.

since you did not say choose one, I will chose A and B!!! If America is ever without either, she is lost!!

            You are correct Joe H.

No that is your duty and not a nation. There is a huge difference.

Once that door is opened , this experiment in government will be soon over.

  • 4-just_us

Well said. I would like to see Ron Paul as President and Dennis Kucinich as VP.

    • BigBadJohn

Good one talk about a hamstrung government….

  • eddie47d

This article is right on the money or the lack of having any money. Congress has become even more inept so the changing of the guard in 2010 did little to change the landscape. The volume is up but the accomplishments are down. Congress is stagflation at it’s best.

    • Tim Orner

Just as GOD made the salvation of man so simple its scary, so, the solving of America’s problems are the same, simple. The problem is, is that man can not resist the power of money and the evil it creates. To solve America’s problems, could unfortunately only happen if I could be a temporary dictator. I say this because the changes that would have to be made, would be so foreign to too many that have become totally dependant on government handouts, and even “regular” people would not see the wisdom in the solution until everything were in place and seen to work.
Lets start with a question: You have 2 chidren that are playing and the object of their playing causes them to not be able to play without fighting with one another. What would most parents do? You take away the source of the problem and therefore both children suffer.
We have 2 parties in Washington that are chidren that can not get along with the responibilty of taxes, and constitutionally of EVERY program that our government has instituted. So what needs to be done? Relieve them all of their jobs and the constitution returned to its proper place in dictating how our forfathers envisioned our country.
There are 2 questions that every American needs to answer and understand. These 2 questions are intertwined, in that one can’t be understood without the other. Because America is broken, it might be nice to be able to go to source to fix it. We can, but who is the source? First question: Who created human government? The first known institution of human government was done by GOD with nation of Israel. Second question: For what purpose was human government created? GOD’s answer to this question was fully understood by our forfathers. That is why they created a constitution that was the best of what they could accomplish with the oposition of that day, create. Human Government was created to accomplish 2 things, and only these 2 things. The 2 things are: The federal government has the responsibily to keep us free. The only tax dollars that should go to Washington, should go to the military and all the agencies that keep us free. The second purpose for government is to keep us safe. State and local taxes should be spent on the police, firefighters, road maintainance, etc. So, what about the social ills of a society. Was GOD remiss in the responsibility of them. NO!!!! That responsibility is for the family and the church. Now what would I as a dictator for as little a time as posible, do!!!!!
We do not need to “CUT” spending, we need to ELIMINATE every program the government runs. The 2 kids can’t get along and make constitutionally right decisions, get rid of all of them.
Next, I would intitute a consumption tax that would be used to continue funding the military and all of the departments that keep us free, plus I would pay off our debt, I would continue to pay social security benefits to all peoples 50 and over, I would refund all social security payments made by those less than 50 so they can save, spend that money as they please. Since when does government have the right to tell anyone how much they can save.
I would eliminate all of the laws currently on the books, and replace them with the 10 commandments. IF enforced properly, society will experience a truly great place to live. We will for the first time have a replublic government, not a democracy, where the law is enforced and enforced equally to all.
All regulations on business and taxes on business would be eliminated. You can’t tax a business!!! They simply pass the costs on to the consumer anyway. If congress would just do this one thing TODAY, the business sector would create so many jobs, plus all those businesses that left because of regulation would come back home and we would need to make room for an influx of immigrants that would open up businesses. Regulation at the state level would also need to be eliminated. All property taxes are unconstitutional and need to be eliminated. All property regulation needs to go. Since when does government have the right to tell a property owner what they can and can’t do with it? Since when does the government have the right to tell you if you put a new roof on your home, or add an addition to it? NONE!!!!!
The education system would return to where education is best taught. The family and the church. Isn’t it currious that home and church educated chilren score the best!!!
I would fundementally change the banking system. No more FED, a return to a precious metals standard, so that our money has value, and would have no ties to any other currency. There would be no loans that will last longer than 7yrs. We must stop the insanity of enslaving ourselves for life. Mortgages are pure robbery, and the banking industry and failure of government to offer loans that people can afford is appauling and WRONG. It has driven the price of owning a home, building that home, the raw goods to make that home to ridiculous levels.
Insurance companies would be made to opporate as intended. The many paying for the few. Fraud and greed have infiltrated this industry to outragious levels. Do rates go “DOWN” as more people join as was the original intent, no!! Rates go up, the owners get outragious salaries. Please understand, I am a true free enterprise person, but if we just followed the commandment of not coveting, and really made the effort to care for one another, instead of only caring about self, this industry can do the good for people it was intended to do
Why did GOD come to this earth to live an exampled life of no sin, being tempted by Satan on every front, yet without sin, gave his life willingly for the human race, rose from the dead by his own power, defeating death and sin, thereby providing eternal life to anyone who would accept his free gift? Man rebelled against GOD and because sin entered the world, so did death. GOD never intended for man to die, so he provided a gift for him so man could be restored back to GOD. But because sin permiates this world, doing the right thing, is impossible for man to do on an ongoing basis. Hate is more powerful than good, which is why GOD had to make ten laws, not to control man, but to expose man’s hopeless ability to follow them. Laws need to be enforced. Enforcing just the ten commandments equally to everyone, would allow for a society that maybe could care about their neighbor as much as themselves. Just think how much better society would be if we just strived for this one attribute.
To solve America’s problems IS so simple, but it is within that simplicity, that it is probably to late for the majority to trust in it, to make it work. Sadly, the BIBLE does predict, that in the last days of this age, that ALL nations will go to war against Israel. It also predicts that the world would become so fianacially stressed, that a one world government would be formed and a single man [the Bible calls him Antichrist] would offer the solution, claim peace with Israel, and rule. Has there ever been a time in human history that the entire world is financially broke, and all of the solutions actually don’t bring any prosperity, but have made everything worse. Man is lost about returning any financial stability to this world, because of his utter refusal to do things GOD’s way. This antichrist will seemingly have that solution and most will believe that he does. If we want to prolong the life of this great nation, America needs to repent, and return to the Constitution that is truely a GOD inspired document.

One problem___ when does a “temporary dictator” leave? Absolute power corrupts absolutely

        • Everyday Politics

Sorry, Bob, but we have a would-be dictator right now in the person of Obama. Your supposed problem is ALREADY a problem. Strong medicine is needed NOW. So, wake up and do a bit of thinking, please.

          • joe1cr

Best thing we could do is defeat all incumbent Congressmen and women
that are lawyers ,teachers and doctors. That have screwed up our country with their support of their own personal agendas that only
help out their peers. They have abandoned the American citizens they
pretend to represent for they are all powerful and only need us for their tax cows.

  • Al Sieber

I’m glad people are waking up, and I hope more will wake up before it’s too late. we need a congress that represents us, not special interests.

    • bob wire

I doubt if few would disagree with that statement Al Sieber

The problems seem to arise after promising that they will , they get to the hill and find it more difficult to do then they expected.

We did seen a Tennessee GOP Senator give up his leadership position this week, claiming he could not be effective in a leadership position that requires walking in lock step and speaking a single message.

What we need is a few more examples like this courageous Senator to break ranks and be what the people sent them to the hill to be! Their elected representatives and not simple gears in a single minded machine with one function, to dominate the political process.

Forgive my optimism, but this is current news and one step in the right direction. Small as it may seem, very noteworthy.

  • Tom Burleson

There are clear signs that we are going to be in serious trouble. There are no other derivatives that can be drawn other than we are going to have problems as a country. The administration lies about even the most unimportant facts and they have proven that they cannot be trusted. There is so many “special interests” that it is bad that we cannot trust nor know who can be trusted. Ron Paul has many problems and is such a steeped congressman that we don’t dare listen to all of his points. We need a president that is not afraid of the “machine” and will follow the constitution to get back on solid footing. Pray for guidance!

    • http://?? Joe H.

That congressman is steeped in the constitution!!! check out his voting record!

  • AUMom

Would that I could support Ron Paul. The trouble is I am pro life and he is not. What good are the very best reforms if ALL, from conception until death, are not able to benefit from them.

    • Commonsense

Here you are chanting government diatribe. It shouldn’t be the Federal Goverments job to OK or NOT OK abortion. You are counting on the fed to stop it. People like you complain about the Government only when it doesn’t suit you! The government shouldn’t have a say in it at aaaaaaallllll!!!!!!!!!!! Just like Ron Paul has said time and time and time again, his personal stand on many issues doesn’t matter, it isn’t the governments job to choose, accept or pay for anything related to abortion!!!!! Strong military, strong borders, and mind our own damn business!!! If you don’t like what your neighbor is doing, ignore him or her as long as they are doing it on their own property. It’s time for people to learn to STICK TO YOUR OWN KNITTIN’!As far as the moron up further complaining about Iran having nukes. They will get them whether we fight em or not. More than likely, they already have some stashed somewhere. They are pretty much the only country left that DOESN’T have one. You stand here and bitch about Iran and calmly accept the fact that N. Korea has them….this just puts you, Billy Cook, in the “My common sense just fell out my ass.” catergory. Its like you people have taken an overdose of stupid pills. Honestly, think about what you are saying and just try, try I say, to use common sense and reason. You are the same people who have an 8 year old kid program you t.v., phone, dvd player ect. because you can’t think in a rational manner or use basic common sense.

    • Bob Livingston

      Dear AUMom,

Where do get this nonsense that Ron Paul is not pro-life? Here is what he has to say on the issue: “After being forced to witness an abortion being performed during his time in medical school, he knew from that moment on that his practice would focus on protecting life. And during his years in medicine, never once did he find an abortion necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman.

As a physician, Ron Paul consistently put his beliefs into practice and saved lives by helping women seek options other than abortion, including adoption. And as President, Ron Paul will continue to fight for the same pro-life solutions he has upheld in Congress, including:

      * Immediately saving lives by effectively repealing Roe v. Wade and preventing activist judges from interfering with state decisions on life by removing abortion from federal court jurisdiction through legislation modeled after his “We the People Act.”

      * Defining life as beginning at conception by passing a “Sanctity of Life Act.”

Go here to see what else he has to say about it, and all the other issues in this campaign.

And please, get you facts straight before spouting off and quit listening to the Republican apparatchik and the mainstream media, which are working in concert to defeat Congressman Paul.

      Best wishes,

      • bob wire

How does such talk ever get started?

And to ignore it acts as some kind of validation, going along way to explaining my presence here on your forum.

    Hey Tom,

    Did you play pro-basketball?

Our government is broken. Maybe it is time to think way outside the box. Why not locate and build a NEW capitol at maybe the geographic or population center of the US. Start small, plan and design well, elect AMERICANS, and gradually shift power from Washington. It has become irrelevant and a drag on a free America. Obama has his own billionaire in Soros, plus some other rich libs. Do we have any of our own billionaires who would help start this?? Start NEW political alliances/parties. Maybe stop voting at all for Washingtonians. Run our own slate of candidates. Elect our own PRESIDENT!! One small step at a time. We can use some old document as our basis, like the “Declaration of Independence” and that much ignored document, “the US Constitution”. Maybe our motto could be something like “Don’t Tread on me”. It worked once before.

    • bob wire

I’ve offered to give up everything west of the Rocky for your experiment in government. Prime real-estate and I consider it most generous Bill.

Allow freedom of choice and results to be the judge.

  • Everyday Politics

You are wrong, Sam, to tie the disaffection of the people to Ron Paul. You come off as sounding like a spokesperson for the establishment. Is that what you are? I think the disgusted majority are disgusted with politics as usual and they are likely to show their anger at the polls in 2012.

  • nw

The government wastes a lot and what they don’t waste, they steal! They’ve stolen our retirements, our homes, and jobs but not only this generation but all future generations.

  • Patty McLeod

You cannot trust anyone who is currently in office because by now they have learned to “play the game” to get along. Just don’t RE-ELECT anyone (especially lawyers). We can enforce tern limits at the polls. We just have to DO IT! Elect people who are willing to live with the laws they pass the same as the non-elected citizens. Simplify so everyone can understand (ever try to read the tax code, or Obamacare for that matter). No one should expect to spend his/her life in Washington, serve, serve well, and get out. Also, let’s get rid of Hispanic-American, Black-American, Chinese-American and all the other -Americans. We are all Americans, start acting like it.

  • 45caliber

It isn’t just broken; as my grandfather used to say, “It is busticated!”

When we speak of our Government, we are in essence speaking of the Federal Reserve that controls our Government through a fictitious debt our Government agreed to pay back. Through this debt, the Federal Reserve, which is owned, and controlled by the trans-national, privately owned, banking elites, dictates American policies! Unfortunately, our Government, is no longer a transcendent entity, autonomous, unshackled, and free to represent the people! The fact is, the opposite is true. Presently, our Government is controlled by foreign powers, and these foreign powers do not care a fig for the American people. The wealth of America was confiscated through the application of “fiat money”. Fiat money is the process by which money that doesn’t exist is created out of thin air, and backed by nothing, by the Federal Reserve. It is then loaned out to congress on a promise that the American tax-payers will pay this fictitious loan, plus interest, through taxes.

First, let’s determine what the Federal Reserve System isn’t. It isn’t a government entity as most believe. While the name was carefully crafted to deceive, it isn’t a Federal institution nor does it have any reserve. The fact of the matter is, it’s an international banking cartel made of the largest banking and financial personalities in the world. Now if that doesn’t at least raise an eyebrow, this should. The federal income taxes you pay don’t go to run the government, this ceased years ago. The federal taxes you pay go to the Federal Reserve to be loaned to the USA and other countries. Just imagine; we pay all our taxes to the fed who in turns lends that and more back to us with interest.

All tax dollars go to the Federal Reserve. For every $1 the Federal Reserve receives, it loans $10. Where does this $10 come from? It’s simply created from absolutely nothing. But the real kicker, the Fed charges interest on the entire $10, so in essence they’re collecting high interest on nothing from the American people. Then to make matters worse, they artificially induce inflation to increase interest payments on that nothing. Quite a productive scam if I might say so myself. Some might even classify this as criminal.

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 concocted legislation, to be foisted upon the People’s Congress of the United States, that empowered and commissioned this secret cabal of World-dominant bankers to PRINT UNITED STATES CURRENCY, a usurpation of our Constitution’s explicit edict empowering ONLY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT to print and coin currency.

This monumental, yet secret fraud had swindled untold billions of REAL dollars from the hands of the American citizenry, from the moment of the birth of the Federal Reserve Act (sneaked through Congress on Christmas Eve, 1913) until the day when one courageous President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, determined that he shall return the United States Treasury to its rightful task of printing UNITED STATES SILVER CERTIFICATES, notes that represent REAL money, silver held in reserve by the United States Government — silver which the U.S. Government promises to pay, upon demand, to the bearer of that certificate.

This sterling deed of rescue of America’s financial self-determination so angered the supremely powerful Rothschild, Rockefeller, Morgan, and other ensconced banking families, that they ordered the execution of this courageous President John Kennedy who dared serve the interests of his people, the People of the United States of America.

The above post should clearly demonstrate who runs our country, and who determines it’s policies. Sadly, it is not our Government. I would recommend to all of the posters here, wether left, or right, to direct your criticism and anger at the true oppressor(s) of the American people. And that is, the supremely powerful banking elites that control, and oppress our country, through the Federal Reserve System!

  • bob wire

Hmm, ~ if the GOP is going to continue setting records for filibustering in the Senate. Some changes will be required in the use of it, if we expect any resemblance of functional government.

Senate GOP held 44′s administration to short yardage that really has hurt the DNC and the nations for any hopes of any timely economic recovery.

Now you might be of a mind to think that is some kind of wonderful but it is not too difficult to see the shoe on the other foot and that is something you might not like so well.

You can only harvest what you plant and I’m looking at large field of weeds, grass burs, bull needles, goat heads and “wait-a-minute” vines.

  • bob wire

Strange that the OP (original poster) fails to speak of the Senate directly and only speaks of dissatisfaction with “government” and “congress”.

I wonder if this Gallup Poll omitted mention of the Senate as well? The term “Government” is certainty all encompassing and not very focused.

“I’ve been dissatisfied with the weather of late.” Such a statement offers uncertainty and questions. I would think any “poll” would offer a more concise picture.

There is no greater power in the world today than that wielded by the manipulators of public opinion in America. No king or pope of old, no conquering general or high priest ever disposed of a power even remotely approaching that of the few dozen men who control America’s mass news and entertainment media.

Their power is not distant and impersonal; it reaches into every home in America, and it works its will during nearly every waking hour. It is the power that shapes and molds the mind of virtually every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, simple or sophisticated.

The mass media form for us our image of the world and then tell us what to think about that image. Essentially everything we know — or think we know — about events outside of our own neighborhood or circle of acquaintances comes to us via our daily newspaper, our weekly news magazine, our radio, or our television. It is not just the heavy-handed suppression of certain news stories from our newspapers or the blatant propagandizing of history-distorting TV ‘docudramas’ that characterizes the opinion-manipulating techniques of the media masters. They exercise both subtlety and thoroughness in their management of the news and the entertainment that they present to us.

For example, the way in which the news is covered: which items are emphasized and which are played down, the reporter’s choice of words, tone of voice, and facial expressions; the wording of headlines; the choice of illustrations — all of these things subliminally and yet profoundly affect the way in which we interpret what we see or hear.

On top of this, of course, the columnists and editors remove any remaining doubt from our minds as to just what we are to think about it all. Employing carefully developed psychological techniques, they guide our thought and opinion so that we can be in tune with the “in” crowd, the “beautiful people”, the “smart money”. They let us know exactly what our attitudes should be toward various types of people and behavior by placing those people or that behavior in the context of a TV drama or situation comedy and having the other TV characters react to them in the Politically Correct way.
