Recall Issued For U.S. Salmon Product

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) — A Chicago company has recalled 8,088 packages of smoked salmon sold at major supermarkets due to potential bacterial contamination, U.S. regulators said.

The Food and Drug Administration said the fish was supplied by Vita Food Products and may have listeria bacteria in it, which could cause fever, nausea and diarrhea and potentially worse problems in the elderly and very young or people with weakened immune systems.

The salmon came in 4 ounce packages branded Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Nova Salmon. It was sold at Publix, Winn-Dixie, Safeway and other grocery stores nationwide, the FDA said in a written statement.

Vita asked consumers who bought the suspect salmon to seal the package in a plastic bag and return it to the store.
