Rangel Claims ‘Millions Of Kids Dying’ From Assault Weapons

March 23, 2013 by

Representative Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) toed the company line in admirable fashion in an interview on MSNBC this week, spicing up his gun control rhetoric with a helping of hyperbole so big it might get him banned for excess in his home State’s largest city.

Asked his thoughts on Democratic Senators’ failure at preserving a proposed ban on assault weapons, Rangel offered this:

We’re talking about millions of kids dying – being shot down by assault weapons, were talking about handguns easier in the inner cities, to get these guns in the inner cities, than to get computers. This is not just a political issue, it’s a moral issue and so when we condemn the NRA we should not ignore the fact that a lot of people that have taken moral positions have been solid on this big one.

Don’t bother searching MSNBC’s site for a pullout quote on this one. It took other news outlets to point out Rangel’s exaggeration.

By the way, here’s some info on what’s being used to kill people in domestic murders, and in what quantity. And here’s a pretty well-done analysis of some of those numbers.

Even if you combine all types of murder methods (strangling, slashing, shooting, beating, poison, getting pushed off cliffs and all the rest), the number of weapons involved in all U.S. murders over the past is a couple of orders of magnitude beneath Rangel’s “millions” — try a high of 14,916 in 2007 (a figure that’s reliably gone down every year since).

Ben Bullard

Reconciling the concept of individual sovereignty with conscientious participation in the modern American political process is a continuing preoccupation for staff writer Ben Bullard. A former community newspaper writer, Bullard has closely observed the manner in which well-meaning small-town politicians and policy makers often accept, unthinkingly, their increasingly marginal role in shaping the quality of their own lives, as well as those of the people whom they serve. He argues that American public policy is plagued by inscrutable and corrupt motives on a national scale, a fundamental problem which individuals, families and communities must strive to solve. This, he argues, can be achieved only as Americans rediscover the principal role each citizen plays in enriching the welfare of our Republic.

Charlie, if I’ve told you once I’ve told you a million times,”quit exaggerating.”

Hmm… never heard of Planned Parenthoods called a “assault weapon” but must be, because they are the only ones killing millions of kids.

When any elected official makes such an outrages lie as what Rangel has concerning assault weapons, they should be charged with fraud, misrepresentation of facts, perjury, or slander and forced to resign. When a Congressperson makes a statement many Americans accept it as fact based on their Stature, therefore accuracy MUST be a requirement. If someone gets confused or misstates something, it’s easy to catch but an out right lie is in defensable. This is common fodder of the Democrats, most of what pours from their mouths are lies. “Millions of Kids dying” from assault weapons in inner cities. What an old fool.

As stated above there were 14,916 murders by gun in 2007, however there were over 30,000 gun deaths in total for that year. That’s a lot of body bags and ammo.Time to move a little stock.

  • FreedomFighter

70-80 percent were gang related around 15% police shootings, suicides, and a very tiny percent on innocents far more are killed by baseball bats/knives/hammers-outlaw those.

over 30,000 human deaths where tool=gun. No guns died that year. They are inanimate objects.

Oh and in that same year 2007 the US population went over 300 Million.

    ………30,000 deaths
300,000,000 Americans. Less than 0.01% of the population committed those acts. And this is presuming one shooter for each death. The number is actually a lot less.

~300 MILLION Americans didn’t kill anyone where tool=gun.

STOP PUNISHING THE INNOCENT for the acts of a few.

    STOP IT
    STOP IT NOW.

jopa obviously recieved his/her math skills from the same source as Charlie Rangel…the classified section of the National Enquirer.

According to the FBI UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS the total number of murders in 2007 was 14,916 of which 10,129 involved firearms.

According to the FBI UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS there were 12,664 murders in 2011 of which 8,583 involved firearms…a significant decline from the 2007 numbers stated above.

Note that violent firearm murder rates have been steadily declining since the expiration of the Clinton “Assault Weapons Ban”.

I agree fully with Vicki…~300 MILLION Americans didn’t kill anyone where tool=gun.

STOP PUNISHING THE INNOCENT for the acts of a few.

JeffH;Silly little boy.I said gun deaths not murders.Where do you claim to have received you reading comprehension skills. You may be in over your head here, perhaps your mother could help you out with your reading disabilities.

As I pointed out to you above guns CAN’T die. They are not alive.

Where did you claim to receive yours?

“Vicki; What are you babbling about?”

In response to my pointing out that 30,000 shootings where tool = gun is ~0.01% of the

~300 MILLION Americans who didn’t shoot anyone

    STOP punishing the innocent.
    STOP IT

jopa, before you stick your foot any deeper down your throat…either it’s your alzheimers or you need to stop your ignorant babbling and take a legitimate course in reading comprehension and quit relying on The Globe and the Enquirer for your advanced education.

If you could read and comprehend you would have reognized that I directly addressed your erroneous figure of “14,916 murders by gun in 2007″…your words not mine…because there was not “14,916 murders by gun”(your word exactly)and said nothing about 30,000 of anything.

If nothing else, at least try to comprehend this:

According to the FBI the total number of murders in 2007 was 14,916 of which 10,129 involved firearms.

~300 MILLION AMERICANS DID NOT ASSAULT ANYONE USING ANY FIREARM.

~300 MILLION Americans DIDN’T SHOOT anyone AT ALL. Not even by accident.

Join us in telling them to STOP PUNISHING THE INNOCENT

    STOP IT

JeffieH My source for th 14,916 gun deaths by firearms was not the Globe or Enquirer, but PLD that has it in the above article.I guess you will have to ask them where they got there info, and stop acting so childish.STOP IT STOP IT RIGHT NOW YOU SILLY LITTLE BOY.

    jopa says:
“JeffieH My source for th 14,916 gun deaths by firearms was not the Globe or Enquirer, but PLD that has it in the above article.”

I rechecked the article and found NO mention of any gun deaths by firearms or any other method. Guns are INANIMATE objects. They are not alive. We have ALSO disproved the claim that firearms can kill anything at all. See this story right here on PLD.

  • JeffH

jopa, your mental disease is worse than I thought. PLD never said that, you did…but why does that not surprise me?

You really need to learn how to comprehend and doublecheck your lies. Like a little child the more you try to justify your lie the deeper the hole you dig yourself into.

Here is what the PLD article said verbatim: “Even if you combine all types of murder methods (strangling, slashing, shooting, beating, poison, getting pushed off cliffs and all the rest), the number of weapons involved in all U.S. murders over the past is a couple of orders of magnitude beneath Rangel’s “millions” — try a high of 14,916 in 2007 (a figure that’s reliably gone down every year since).”

14,916 is all types of the murder methods combined in 2007…the key phrase in the article is “the number of weapons involved in all U.S. murders”…nowhere did the author insinuate that there were 14,916 gun deaths or gun murders…you did however say that there were “14,916 murders by gun in 2007″…again your words, not the authors or PLD.

~300 MILLION Americans didn’t kill anyone where tool=gun.

STOP PUNISHING THE INNOCENT for the acts of a few.

    STOP IT
    STOP IT NOW.

Considering the number, you are more likely to die suffering a direct hit from a falling passenger jet than you are likely to die from an unprovoked gunshot. Get criminals off the streets and the guns will leave with them. Enforce the laws already on the books.
