Rand Paul Argues Democrats ‘Should Not Escape’ Pain Obamacare Will Cause Everyday Americans

After Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) delivered his marathon talk last Tuesday to galvanize GOP opposition to Obamacare, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) published an opinion piece in The Washington Times, excoriating the hypocrisy of Congressional leaders who continue to support the Affordable Care Act while exempting themselves from its mandates.

What should infuriate you the most is the fact that the same elected officials who implemented this mandate have recently declared themselves exempt from it. That is to say, these officials are forcing you to partake in something that they themselves are refusing. If Obamacare is so great, why then are federal employees and elected officials getting special treatment and opting out?

If President Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Harry Reid and Chief Justice Roberts love Obamacare so much, they should live under it. Their actions speak louder than words, and it is erroneous for these leaders to even attempt to claim that Obamacare is a step forward for Americans.

Not a difficult concept to understand, is it?

One thread that runs through all of the conservative opposition to Obamacare has been the simplicity of the conservatives’ moral message. Despite the sophistication of Cruz’s Ivy League mind or of Paul’s Hippocratic training, conservative lawmakers have had no need to fall back on complexity, obfuscation or patronizing, “it’s-complicated” justification for why they have taken this particular stand on the healthcare law. Rather, their message is manifestly simple and just plain correct: It’s wrong for Congress to stand apart from the laws it has created.

Similarly, Democrats and RINO proponents of Obamacare have feebly argued in favor of the law from a smug high ground of intricate, systemic and complicated explanations. Their attempt at intellectual abstraction to defend the indefensible — such as when President Barack Obama last week urged America to wait patiently for the law to begin reverberating through society, or when Senator John McCain criticized Cruz and Co. for failing to appreciate his fatalistic “compromise” justification for siding with the Democrats — is both stupidly transparent and intellectually dishonest.

People often see through such condescension if they’re paying attention.

Here’s more unfiltered logic from Paul:

I find it absolutely despicable that Mr. Obama, his administration and the elected officials who shoved this mandate down the throat of Americans are now giving themselves waivers. The president is also giving his friends waivers. Mr. Obama’s behavior mirrors that of a captain jumping overboard, abandoning his own sinking ship.

I have a proposal. I have offered an amendment that would outlaw any special exemptions for government employees. This amendment requires all federal workers to purchase health insurance from the new Obamacare exchanges, instead of receiving taxpayer-funded subsidies.

I am also introducing a more broad constitutional amendment, which states that Congress shall make no law that treats citizens differently from the elites in the federal government.

… My legislation and constitutional amendment will remind all elected officials that they are not above the law, and they are certainly not above the American people.

Hopefully, by 2014, a great many elected officials will learn that same lesson at the polls.

Reconciling the concept of individual sovereignty with conscientious participation in the modern American political process is a continuing preoccupation for staff writer Ben Bullard. A former community newspaper writer, Bullard has closely observed the manner in which well-meaning small-town politicians and policy makers often accept, unthinkingly, their increasingly marginal role in shaping the quality of their own lives, as well as those of the people whom they serve. He argues that American public policy is plagued by inscrutable and corrupt motives on a national scale, a fundamental problem which individuals, families and communities must strive to solve. This, he argues, can be achieved only as Americans rediscover the principal role each citizen plays in enriching the welfare of our Republic.

I agree with the headline and will add that REAL people should be on Obama’s death panels; I volunteer for one….Good health requires the democrat traitors suffer for what they are trying to do to us!

  • Dadwasright

Obama. Traitor comes to mind ! Obama care big drug companys wrote the bill, without there big money greasing the palms of our representatives it could never pass that is why they exempt themselves. They know how bad it is ! Untill we MAKE them accountable nothing will get better ! Under pain of certain death they pass it for us they live under it too. Then you will truly see the CHANGE .

  • Vigilant

Nice rhetoric from Paul, but you wanna bet he won’t take advantage of his senatorial perks in healthcare like the rest of his Congressional colleagues?

    • Blank Reg

Sure he will! And I would too! If you KNOW Obamacare is going to suck big time and threaten the health, finances and well being of you and your family, wouldn’t you also do anything you could to avoid that?

      • Vigilant

Neither you nor I are in the position of legislator, and that’s the crux of the difference. Paul is supposed to be representing his constituents, not himself. I don’t expect you to sacrifice for the public good. I expect him to.

    • Don 2

Would you rather he not speak up about this injustice, or be like John McCain and Lindsay Grahamnesty? There is only a few of these guys speaking for the people. Give some credit where credit is due Vigilant.

      • Vigilant

No, I would rather he speak up about doing away with Obamacare completely, not attempting to get presidential traction by spouting off on a bumper sticker issue.

There’s a word for someone who “speak(s) up about this injustice” and then personally opts to take advantage of the injustice. It’s called “hypocrite.”

        • Don 2

Fair enough, but peeling back layers of the onion can make the core more vulnerable.

          • Vigilant

No argument from me on that.

        • Robert Messmer

And has he opted to take advantage yet? We won’t know until tomorrow, I guess. Time enough then to call hypocrite if needed.

    • Michael Shreve

The government does a LOT of stupid things. Not taking ADVANTAGE of government stupidity is would be equally stupid.

      • Vigilant

You mean like welfare and medicare fraud? Or grabbing those food stamps that USDA is actually encouraging people to take? I don’t think so. That’s the socialist and selfish “taker” way of thinking.

We should be working to downsize and improve government, not screwing our fellow taxpayers.

        • Michael Shreve

You mean YOU don’t take advantage of the government’s STUPID income tax laws. Fraud, is a crime.

          • Vigilant

It’s NOT about you and me, or what we do to take advantage of laws on the books. It’s about Rand Paul, a legislator for all of us, and you say he would be stupid not to take advantage of a law he says he despises?

He may be a fool in your eyes for not taking advantage of the Congressional exemption from Obamacare, but he would be a hypocrite for doing so. You’re apparently fine with that, I’m not.

Would you call Congressmen stupid for not taking advantage of their insider trading exemption when they had it? Both that and Obamacare were/are elite-focused and unethical regulations. All I ask of any person in a law-making position is to put their money where their mouth is.

As I said to Blank Reg below, ” Paul is supposed to be representing his constituents, not himself. I don’t expect you to sacrifice for the public good. I expect him to.”

          • Debbie Hogan Tate

So why hasn’t Obama been arrested?

    • Debbie Hogan Tate

I don’t know about Rand but Cruz did not accept the government insurance offered!

  • Michael Shreve

First, NO ONE in government is special. EVERY ONE of them is SUPPOSED to be EXACTLY like US and obey EXACTLY the same laws. Ours is not SUPPOSED to be a nation governed by nobility and administrated by the elite. Second, as the Supreme Court declared, the individual mandate is a TAX., Because Obamacare with the “mandate” was ORIGINATED by the Senate, the “mandate is an UNCONSTITUTIONAL tax..

    • Vigilant

Agreed. I’m surprised that no politician has addressed this.
Technically, since the House must originate appropriations bills, Obamacare was never Constitutionally passed, and therefore should be unenforceable.

      • Jana

Ted Cruz and Rand Paul to name two did address this technicality on this particular bill, but they need to live by ALL of the laws that they enact for the supposed common good. Most of them think they are above these laws, that is why there needs to be a greater turn over in Congress.
Being a politician should not be a lifetime career!

  • Debbie Hogan Tate

Everyone or no one, no subsides, no pay raises to cover it! ALL OR NONE!! No double standards!

This country is being led by a man who thinks of himself as a Monarch, he is accountable only to himself..This is what happens when Charlie McCarthy is told he is real.

The audacity of this man and his party who the hell do they think they are. They are turning the people in this country into peasants, of course that’s what the communist party did in Russia. and it took seventy years to break free.

people should remember when communism was overthrown in Russia, the televised event showed where the Bourgeois (government workers, teachers, party members) lived and they had a much better life than the peasantry, this is now taking place in this country,

The party will tell you how to live and they will live as they like.

This country is broke, we have more debt than we are able to pay and these clowns are forcing us into a government run healthcare system that will dictate our well being,

If we like it or not.and as you grow older they will determine what lifesaving care you may or may not have (death panel)
They are depleting Medicare, so eventually we will be forced into a single payer system, Barry likes that, that’s what most socialist type governments have and then you will find out what waiting for medical services is like.
Shut the Government down, remove these liberal clowns and start over again.

H.L. Mencken (born 1880 – died 1956) was a journalist, satirist, critic, and Democrat. He wrote this editorial while working for the Baltimore Evening Sun, which appeared in the July 26, 1920 edition.

“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and complete narcissistic moron.”
—H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920

    • Robert Messmer

The peasants in Russia were already peasants because of the Czars, not because of the the communist party. And it was known even before communism fell that the “classless” society still had those on the bottom and those on the top.

      • Carlos

Messmer, Even we have the poor class. It has nothing to do with politics. You will always have the poor. There was a distinct difference between the Czars and Communism, one was totalitarian the other a Communist police state, the latter is admired by many in the education system and this Administration..Lenin’s dream of a workers paradise living under Marxism didn’t work, when they took charge in 1917 the workers rejoiced and then gradually woke up to the fact they had a job in a factory, yet, they didn’t have enough to eat. The only reason they survived in ww2 was not because of their military might, it was because of the U.S. who supplied them with war material, tanks, planes and fuel..and even with this, if the Allies hadn’t cut off Germany’s fuel supply, most likely things would have turned out a little different. In the end Communism defeated Russia.

And now we have a so called president who admires a Marxist type government, It’s not surprising, he’s not that smart.

        .

        • Robert Messmer

Yes we do and I never said we didn’t nor did I say or imply that politics had any thing to do with it. I was simply pointing out that the Communists didn’t turn the people into peasants. Which is what you stated.

Obamacare can not be Law of the Land. Obama can not exempt all of congress and the White House and 8 million people. This is discrimination, and Obama and the democrats can be sued for it. Americans do not stand back lets go after Obama and the democrats, who pushed it through, voiding the republicans votes. Obama is a racist to the white American people, and he will pay! Plus Obama went to the Supreme Court until he could get this passed. Well again he is at fault, he forgets who is paying his salary!!!

  • moriah

And if you did not know, Obama is making Nov. as Muslim Month. We need to fight this too. And the latest, he is going to change the green card so the muslims can come to Americans freedom. Sorry they are Muslims, they will get government housing, welfare, food stamps and medicaid. All of this is for the Americans living in the USA. This is not for foreigners. I am warning you all, so lets get prepared, to stop Obama. He is fraud, and he is getting paid by the Muslims, to get everyone of the Muslims he can here. And you wonder why we are being attacked by Muslims, Obama brought them in, behind our backs. Seattle Washington and Detroit MI are full of them.

    • Jana

      And be exempt from Obamacare.

  • Carlos

Jana, It looks like we have reached the pinnacle. King Barry
