Radiation From Japan Reaches West Coast

March 21, 2011 by

Radiation from Japan reaches West CoastSources have confirmed that very low levels of radiation have been detected on the United States' west coast. It is believed that the particles are from Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, which was severely damaged by the recent tsunami.

According to media reports, public health officials said that the radiation levels are far too low to cause any harm to humans. However, the latest news has prompted some Americans to fear the worst-case scenario and establish their own survival plans.

In a column for The Huffington Post, Dr. Hyla Cass, who worked for the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant from 1990 to 2002, said that people should be prepared for all possibilities when dealing with nuclear radiation. She suggested that families should have an adequate supply of potassium iodide tablets, which are designed to saturate the thyroid and block absorption of harmful radioactive iodine.

Cass said that a lack of remedies after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 led to the diagnosis of thyroid cancer for thousands of Ukrainian children.

The World Health Organization recommends that adults should take 150 milligrams (mg) of potassium iodide within three hours of radiation exposure, while adolescents between 12 and 18 years old should take either 130 mg or 65 mg depending on their weight. Infants up to 3 years old should take a half of a tablet, which equates to about 32 mg. A baby no older than a month should be given one-quarter of a capsule.

Foods and herbs that are high in antioxidants can also help people reduce the consequences of radiation exposure, according to a report from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

This is the world we live in. When we make advances, such as nuclear energy, microwaves, cell phones, computers, etc. it isn’t always going to be perfect. The issue boils down to does the good outweigh the bad?

  • Damon

Would the author be kind enough to tell us what the proper dosage is for children between three and 12 years of age? Also, how frequently should we administer KI? Thank you.

    • libertytrain

Damon – I found some more specific dosage : Follow this FDA Guideline for administering to young children if desired.

Age 18+* ———–130mg daily (One IOSAT tablet)
Age 3 – 18 ———–65mg daily (1/2 IOSAT tablet) – Adolescents approaching adult size should receive the full adult dose (130 mg).
      1 month – 3 yrs. —– 32mg daily (1/4 IOSAT tablet)
      Birth – 1 month —– 16mg daily (1/8 IOSAT tablet)

      • Cliff Siebert

any idea on the dosage for my Dogs? :).

        • Lawrence Edward Calcutt

Cliff, Get real, People are concerned about the health of their children not their damn dogs. I hope you asked that question as a joke.

    We are so screwed………………..!!

  • http://forgive1 beerlahaoro

The only way out of this then is to get them (Bildenberg Group) before they get us. They have a long reach.

  • Marquita

Ok….but where can you get K iodine caps right now? I’read that the supply is gone so, where can I order some? Also, what’ the shelf life of K I? Thanks so much.

  • Macromansir

We are SOoo building up to “the End Times.” I’m excited about Christ’s 2nd coming to save this human evil race from itself!

    • http://windstream Jo Anne

Yes, but please remember that we were told that in the last day’s folks are going to be seeing a lot of false christ’s all over the place.Enough of them to even fool the very elect if we are not careful. Watch and pray.

  • Mike

It’s in your foods… milk, fish, yogurt. kelp.

  • Al Sieber

I wouldn’t get to upset over the situation, it’s just a way to sell more K iodide, we’ve Nuked 2 cities in Japan in 1945 and didn’t need the medicine here in 1945 to protect us. any sea food like kelp and Spirolina is high in iodine and well benefit you, and you can get it in a health food store.

  • Dennis

With the radiation released so far from the Japanese nuke plants, there is probably more danger from taking the iodine than from the radiation. It is unlikely it will ever be high enough in the US to be a greater risk than the iodine.

    • Macawma

Very good points, Al and Dennis. Ann Coulter recently had an article which had much scientific studies showing the FDA and the AMA have been lying to us all along about how much radiation is acceptable and how much is detrimental. When I lived in Boulder, Mt. people would come from all over the world to sit in the radon mine and purposely expose themselves to 400 times the “acceptable” amount of radon for 45 minutes a session. Apparently it has some curative values. She cited several studies about Chernobyl, and that the 31 people who died actually died from the explosion, and that the thyroid cancer prevalent in not just children, but all Russians, is due to their iodine deficient diet. Hmmm…

It should not problem with the squirrels in Kalifornia, 80% are illegals. With the decades of drug use, so what if they glow a bit and have all become sterile, BFD. If the USA didn’t pay landowners to idle mllions of acres, with taxpayers funds for over 3 decades to do nothing. Idoits may have to learn to like the taste of s–t, end the programs like this in the next month or 2. Some type of food could bre produced this year yet. Just some more of the Sky is Falling BS, theories usually don’t prove out as a big of a problem of dreamed of. The green energy has been proven a bunch of crap, and this natural disaster proves again how whimpy mankind is and cann’t control s–t. Gobal warming is pure unadulatured ponzi bs. The idea man was going to control mother nature, don’t think so! Guess the west coast slubs will be refered as winky, blinky and nod.

MY GOD, how unbelievable, people here in the US are worried about Micro waves from radiation from Japan?

Really? Everyone has a cell phone or three, a lap top on on mobile band, leat alone a big PHAT FLAT screen Tellie, let alone many folks have three of four in their homes. You all have Micro Wave ovens.
If you have and do any of these you have more radiation daily than whats in the air from Japan.

Wake UP!!!! Stop eating Media HYPE COW PIES.

The folks working at the Plant are not being effected, they are feet on the ground, so what makes anyone here think they are in danger?
    WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Kate8

TIME – You are right. We are exposed to many types of radiation every moment of our lives. This fact does not make it harmless.

All radiation is cumulative, and ANY added burden on our bodies is not insignificant.

Prior to the advent of all such wonders, including electricity in every home, the cancer rate was very low. Now it is one in three, and rising, including among children. Thyroid problems, including cancer, is rampant, along with every form.

There are now many doctors and researchers who admit that cancer is fungal. What is happening is that our bodies are being so bombarded and weakened by such an array of chaotic energy, that we are no longer able to maintain stable energy systems, and are breaking down.

No added stress is harmless, whether it be increased radiation levels or the mere fear of it. Stress is the #1 cause of ill health.

      • Bob D

Prior to those things you stated what was the life expectacy? infant
mortality? As a former worker in the nuclear field, I received
many times the radiation dose that the general public is allowed
and at age 73, I’m still here

      • http://?? Joe H.

i heard on Fox today that the workers at the plant that are fighting to keep them undercontrol are on a suicide mission! They said that was according to the Japanese government themselves. The Emperor spoke directly to the people yesterday for the first time in years!! That in itself tells me there is something very grave to worry about!

    • Macawma

TIME, again you tell it like it is! You have more common sense than the entire state of California!

    • Al Sieber

TIME, you got that right, most is hype, and how medicine can we sell.

  • DaveD

“It is believed” is the statement that means to me that they have not one whit of evidence to support their conclusion. Meaning, there is NO evidence to link any rise in radiation levels, if such exist, to the reactors in Japan. Any information coming from any person who worked for the Huffington Misinformation Center, is probably bogus. If not an outright fabrication, it is at least hyperbole slanted to the extreme Left.

  • azwayne

Many can’t wait to do whatever idiocy nanny gives them the idea. What a fantastic article, did I miss the numbers indicating increased radiation? WHY? Did they miss the instructions that the iodide will do much more harm than radiation received? Those things don’t help sell worthless media, fear, fear, fear, don’t worry about facts. trust your incompetent federal worthless government. Quit wasting all the money in the country get the worthless government employees to do real work produce something worthwhile.

  • barbm

my ex lives on the west coast. don’t anybody tell him anything about how to prevent radiation poisoning. :)

    • Thamera

      lol :D barb

  • Kate8

This is a site with an independent radiation map:

The CA station is in San Francisco, and it’s not showing any elevation. In fact, it’s dropped since yesterday (it’s updated hourly, I think). In fact, the highest levels are consistently in CO, because of elevation and cosmic radiation.

I have no idea where the truth lies here. Is the gov’t underplaying the risk, or overplaying it to keep us fearful and stressed out.

I’m not really sure how to read this map, whether I’m reading it correctly. If anyone has any thoughts, I’d like to read them.

  • BEV

I read alot of the Liberty Digest daily, and I wouldn’t take the iodide, as we have a safe product that we know that work for iodine. It’s the Vickery Sea Plant Minerals… You may find them at it has Organic Laminaria digitata (entire plant) which is fresh kelp (iodine)850mg and has and 70.55mg of Potassium.. It has other ingredients from the L digitata as well….NO SIDE AFFECTS
Hope if anyone needs it for thyroid problems as well…We also have people from Japan that has ordered it previous as well…. No fear of the radiation as we can help…

i find it strange that we need to hear about the rise (even if it is minor as they say now) from european sources not US. Is our government really telling us the truth?? they have not about anything else for a long time.
