Racketeering Judge Sentenced To 28 Years

SCRANTON, Pa., Aug. 12 (UPI) — A former Pennsylvania judge convicted of taking bribes to send juveniles to private detention centers was sentenced to 28 years in prison for racketeering.

Mark Ciavarella received the sentence Thursday. He was convicted in February in federal court in Scranton, Pa., on 12 counts, the Christian Science Monitor reported.

Ciavarella and another judge, Michael Conahan, received $2.8 million in bribes to close down the county’s juvenile detention center and refer juvenile defenders from their courts to privately-run facilities.

In court, Ciavarella apologized to the community, saying “I blame no one but myself for what happened.”

Conahan pleaded guilty to a single count of racketeering last year and is awaiting sentencing.
