Question for Bob

January 24, 2011 by

Dear Bob,

Regarding the Value-Added Tax (VAT), couldn’t those on a low and/or fixed income have a card (like a Sam’s or Walmart Card) that you don’t have to pay tax — or maybe half of the tax. You know; like small business owners that stock up at both if they have their tax number for the business?

Bobby

Dear Bobby,

Certainly the government could set up the system however it likes. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see its efforts directed toward creating another dependent class in order to make them feel their “benevolent” government was giving them some break that someone else might not be getting. However, the VAT is a terrible idea that will kill the economy and steal more of your wealth.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Since a Value Added Tax is a fee applied to each step of the manufacturing process of an item a card in the hands of a consumer would not be able to allow the consumer to buy the final product tax-free.

What a VAT tax really does is focus manufacturing into a few companies that take raw material from the ground and process it all the way to the final product.

This of course is both incredibly inefficient and it also stifles competition at all levels and destroys small business.
