Psoriasis medication causes deadly complications

February 20, 2009 by

Raptiva has been linked to a lethal brain infection. The FDA has announced that doctors linked a medication used to cure a skin condition to a lethal brain infection.

A public health advisory has been issued as a result confirming three deadly cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare brain infection, in patients using the drug Raptiva (efalizumab).

The agency is still reviewing the cases, but has outlined three basic steps to ensure patient safety. They require doctors to determine that the risks of taking the drug do not outweigh the benefits, that patients prescribed Raptiva are informed of the symptoms of PML, and that health professionals monitor patients for the disease.

PML causes "an irreversible decline in neurologic function and death," says the advisory, adding that there is no known cure for the disease.

Symptoms include unusual weakness, loss of coordination, changes in vision, difficulty speaking and personality changes.

According to the National Institutes of Health, PML is caused by the reactivation of a common virus in the central nervous system in individuals with a compromised immune system.

Raptiva works by suppressing T-cells in the immune system whose migration to the skin is responsible for the inflammation and scaling associated with psoriasis.

There are alternatives – even in America. I can’t claim that there are cures for everything, but until people stop living with their brains stuck in idle, they will never be able to walk away from the AMA/FDA/drug cartel and their not-so-wonderful world of side-effects.
I used to know a woman in Arizona who had a terrible case of psoriasis. I passed some along some information that gave her access to a non-drug that she said helped (and had no side-effects).
People, until you get results minus the side-effects, you are wasting money and letting yourselves be controlled by non-healers who worship money.

SC, you are a hoot! I don’t think so. These types of drugs are also used for things like psoriatic arthritis, which my husband has. Severely, I might add. I am so tired of people claiming that if you’d *just* take some supplement or other that it would all just vanish away. Oh, and we never heard about it b/c the Big Bad FDA and its doctor minions are suppressing the information. Yeah right. The truth is that when you have a truly severe case of psoriasis or arthritis there are no easy treatments or cures. The best OTC or home remedy can only take the edge off. So stop jumping all over people already coping with severe health ailments and find something else to do with your time.

So tell me Cathy in NOLA, which alternative treatments have you tried and for how long?
