Project Paperclip

November 15, 2012 by

The Cold War arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union began as the two World War II “allies” were still mopping up in Germany. Both sides wanted to learn all they could about German rocket and atomic technologies, and both wanted to get their hands on the scientists who were developing them.

Joseph Stalin’s forces captured the atomic research labs at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in May 1945. U.S. forces removed V-2 missiles from the Nordhausen complex that was built under the Harz Mountains just before the Soviets took possession of the facility.

Also in May, Wernher von Braun, his fellow rocket engineer brother Magnus and some of their team surrendered to a U.S. private. The group was interrogated and scheduled to be turned over to the Soviets in June.

The American high command decided the group was too valuable to turn over to the Soviets and that the United States should locate and extricate as many of the German scientists as possible. An operation termed “Project Paperclip” was undertaken “to exploit German scientists for American research and to deny these intellectual resources to the Soviet Union.” The goal was to remove as much of the German research team as possible from Germany without the allies’ — particularly the Soviets’ — knowledge.

On Nov. 18, 1945, 88 German scientists reached the shores of America. There was one problem, however. President Harry Truman had ordered that no one who had been a member of the Nazi party or who had participated in Nazi militarism were to be included. This excluded most of the scientists, including von Braun.

Ostensibly without Truman’s knowledge, the U.S. Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency created false employment histories and expunged Nazi party affiliations from the public records. After their records were “cleansed,” the scientists received security clearances to work in the United States.

The fruits of their labors are found in the U.S. space and rocket programs, cruise missiles, stealth technology and a host of other advance technologies that Nick Cook, aerospace consultant for Jane’s Defence Weekly, speculated “could be so destructive that it would endanger world peace and [so] the U.S. decided to keep it secret for a long time.”

So what is the point here……..the imperial presidency might not be so imperial or that
a little ethnic cleansing is not always a bad thing?

    “Enquiring minds want to know.”

From a Historical Perspective, since I was born in 1950, five years after WW 2 Ended but
near the start of the Korean War. IF the U.S. had Acted faster, Grabbing All the Nazi Scientists and their work. BEFORE the Russians got to it. The Entire World would have been much better off.. Since the Communists, starting with the Russians under Stalin had taken over where Hitler Left Off. Most of the later part of the 20th Century World’s Problems were a Direct Result of that….Over 70 million plus people in different countries between WW 2 and when the “Soviet Union” fell apart, Died due to Political Murders, Wars, Starvation, etc. directly due to Communism. More people died than all the years of the Nazi Regime and WW 2 together. The U.N. is nothing but a Sham. During the Korean War, All our Plans were Leaked to the N.K. and Red China due to the Russian General
who was in charge of the U.N. Military / Security Section. The same thing happened during the Vietnam War… we were Compromised from the beginning even before any armed conflict started and right up till it stopped. The Russian Leaders, no matter what
Political Party Name they call themselves could NEVER Be Trusted. They have meddled in more International Conflicts since the early 1800′s and still currently do so. Only that our Lamestream Media Covers the Truth with Propaganda meant to prop up Leftist, Socialist = Progressive / Communist agenda. The Truth is there in plain view but too many people are Blind and don’t see it.

Well while that is all very interesting………just as there are people here who claim
that all we need is real capitalism ( which is what we have now ) there were people
in the Soviet Union under Stalin who were waiting for him to be gone, so they
could get down to the business “real communism”………………..

“The Master said….If names are not correct, language is not in accordance with the truth of things. If language is not in accordance with the truth of things, affairs cannot be carried on to success……..Therefor a superior man considers it necessary that the names he uses may be spoken appropriately. What the superior man requires, is just that in his words, there may be nothing incorrect.”

We had been compromised on the nuke side for some time prior to the end of the war, as had FDR’s administration (verona papers bear this out). And as evidenced by Stalin’s actions with his civilian population before the war, the risk was great should they achieve superiority in any war related tech. In addition to the German scientists, the US did similar with Japanese scientists who conducted biological warfare experiments in China on the Chinese population and POWs, in that they refused to use the data obtained as evidence in war crimes trials. The Japenese contigent was known as Unit 731

Yes, the US has done things that were less than scrupulous and moral. We hope that the balance was such that if not done, the alternative would be worse. Which is one reason we hope that the people we elect or allow to be placed in charge are of stout moral character, not simply intelectuals. (Intellectuals can rationalize most anything with reason, it is man’s moral center which tempers his choices)

      • GALT

Moral center: another ephemeral concept whose meaning and method of determination
has yet to be agreed upon nor is it readily visible in any general way………

Even more humorous on a claimed libertarian site where the primary message is
to expect the very worst from your fellow man….yet has no problem contradicting this
with the mythology of free markets, the invisible hand and naive realism idiocies,
        like the Pareto Optimum.

As usual Galt by default has no real answer to MIkeUSA so he has to be perfidious by talking about something else that has no relation to what MikeUSA was talking about. It appears that this Galt person is a gen-x or something of that era who has not learned history in the schools he went to. Galt, Galt, Galt, give up trying to be intellectual. It only makes you dumber and a fool.

    • GALT

Thank you that rather foolish, irrelevant and inconsequential comment……but
just to help you… that you can understand where you are…… initial post
was my having fun with Bob post…..which Mike responded to…….

I don’t see any questions…….but I did see a lot of words which are typically suggestive,
      yet essentially meaningless………and I responded accordingly…….with what I considered
relevant……..and I am pretty sure, he is capable or responding to it……if he so chooses…..

As you seem to want to join the rest of the “functional illiterates” here……..I will do
my best to attempt a little remediation…….

Questions are followed by this ????????????? a.k.a. a question mark ( for reasons
      obvious to most……… )

Now I realize that actually asking questions is not a common denominator for the
‘willfully ignorant”……….which seems to be another group you seem intent on
joining……….and I am happy to grant you membership…….since you will no
doubt insist on responding to this post……with more of the same……..

      wait for it………………………
