January 12, 2011 by

President, lawmakers lead nation in mourning for Arizona shooting victimsA remembrance ceremony in The United States House of Representatives on Jan. 12 opened a day of mourning for the victims of the Jan. 8 shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz. that killed six people and wounded scores of others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.)

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) opened the session devoted to a debate over a resolution to honor those affected by saying "we are called here to mourn an unspeakable act of violence."

He also sought to stress the bipartisanship that is pervading the ceremonies, stressing that "we gather here without distinction of party [and the] needs of this institution have always risen above partisanship."

According to media reports, the resolution condemns the rampage, calls for an open society and affirms a belief in democracy where "the threats of violence cannot silence the voices of any American."

Later in the day, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano were set join President Barack Obama and the First Lady on a trip to Arizona to attend a memorial service and visit victims' families at the University of Arizona Medical Center where the congresswoman is recovering.
