Prepare To Bug Out

May 10, 2012 by

While many people romanticize the idea of social unrest or martial law as motivations for “bugging out,” the more likely event is that something like Hurricane Katrina or a forest fire will be your stimulus for actually leaving your home behind and hitting the road with your bug out bag (BOB). If you classify yourself as a “prepper,” then you may already have your BOB packed. However, you may not know that system redundancy is just as important in building your bag as it is in every other aspect of prepping.

When building your BOB, make sure you have particular items in multiple pockets and pouches, as well as retaining multiple versions of the same functionality. For example, instead of having one lighter in your front pocket and that’s it, make sure you also carry some waterproof matches in your medical kit, a ferrocerium rod and steel striker in your waterproof clothing bag, and a road flare in the side pocket of your bag. That way, if anything happens to any piece of equipment you have (i.e., submerged in water, stolen, dropped along the way), you will have diversified your reliance on any single part of your bag.

Obviously, you can’t create redundancy with every item in your BOB, but you certainly will want to make this a priority with the most important tools for your survival. Namely, the top five C’s of survival:

  • Containers: primarily for water (preferably something you can bring to a boil)
  • Cordage: shelter, medical, trapping, fishing and more
  • Cutting implement: too many uses to count
  • Combustion: fire (food, warmth, light and security)
  • Covering: should be waterproof

Creating system redundancy in these five main areas of survival will give you a much better chance of thriving in a true bug out situation.

In the event you ever really have to bug out, don’t forget to duplicate each of these items on your person as well. Developing your bug out outfit to include a survival belt made of paracord, a boot knife, a Zippo lighter, a stainless steel water bottle (not double walled) and a waterproof jacket will ensure that you will never be without these items, even if you completely lose your BOB. You don’t have to wear these items every day (although some are recommended), but try to at least set them aside with your BOB in the event you need to get dressed and go.

is the Executive Director of Category Five, a Preparedness Education Network, and is a prepper at heart. After graduating from Arizona State University with a degree in Global Business Management, Austin spent seven years in pastoral ministry while building ministry and business relationships around the globe. During that time he became keenly aware of the coming financial storm that is upon us today, and has been prepping ever since. For this reason, in early 2009, Austin and his team at Category Five began to change the original purpose of the organization to become what it is today. Prepping is not about being an expert in survival or having experience as a former Special Forces soldier; prepping is about building on the strengths of those you prepare with and educating yourself about things you can control. This is the idea behind the Category Five, and the necessity of a Preparedness Education Network.

nice thought on the road flares,Austin…been at this since my first tornado and would point out that old plastic bottles make excellent kindling if you’re in need…they’re found on every shore and in every ditch.
Everyone take at least a first aid course…NOW.

Wow! You guys really are wacko conspiracy gun nuts! I, too , was a “survivalist”, stockpiling bullets and dehydrated food. I was really ready to dig some pillboxes around my house when a thought came into my head. If I “hole up”, and start shooting intruders, eventually I would run out of BULLETS. There are far more humans than the amount of bullets I have. And once they figure out I’m out, after killing a few dozen of their best friends, what do you think they would do to me? It would probably be a wet dream of Dr. Megelegh!

listen, just vote Democratic, let the Dem’s fix everything like FDR did, and then we can get back to being AMERICANS!

You just need friends, a hand of 5, few to none will survive what is coming if alone, unless they have some serious training in evasion and survival. The drones will pick them out and tag them, then easy pick up, more safety in numbers, but nobody will be safe from the coming crisis.(s)

Very funny, Dems have never “fixed” anything except elections.

  • mike

Kg makes more sense than anyone I have read in all the comments on this site

So what are you doing on here then? Trolling for votes for Obama?

  • JimH

Kg, I’ll let the Dems “fix” things, like FDR.
The Vet “fixed” my cat. It doesn’t work now either.

One thing to remember. You don’t need MRE’s, most canned goods will store for years and as long as they don’t puff up they are still good. nutritional value may decrease after 4 or 5 years but the fat (which you will need) will still be there. Canned soups and pasta is the best but canned veggies and beans should be included as well. Keep your stoke up and rotate it into your daily meal plan to keep your stock fresh as possible.

Neither water or canned foods is fun to lug around the countryside in a backpack. Three to five days of MREs and 15 days worth of water purification tablets is a much better investment.

If you can afford them, more power to you. We have a pallet and a half of them at work that are about 8 years old now. Trust me, they don’t get better with age. :)

I own a motor home and have enough stores for quite along time. I, also, have a bugout bag in my motorhome and my vehicle.

Being prepared is eesential, no matter what your fear or concerns are.

i’m not waiting for the gov’t to fix anything. look at the ‘fix’ we’re in now

  • FreedomFighter

The unprepared will die first. Its just that simple.

High Level Insider: DHS Preparing to Start A Civil War

      http://www.infowars.com/high-level-insider-dhs-preparing-to-start-a-civil-war/

“Doug said high-level, reliable sources told him the Department of Homeland Security is preparing for “massive civil war” in America as a result of a collapse of the dollar and the hyperinflation that will result.”

We are very close now, hope they hold it together untll after the election.

Not likely. They aren’t preparing to quell a “massive civil war”, they’re planning on starting one using union goons and OWS idiots. . .

“The DHS takes their marching orders from the Obama administration, from Obama
himself, but mostly from his un-appointed czars. And Jarrett, especially Valerie
Jarrett. Don’t think for a minute that the administration is doing anything to stabilize
events in the U.S. They are revolutionaries, and revolutionaries thrive on chaos,” he
        added.
        . . .
“Obama is using some high profile people as pawns to foment the revolution. I heard
several times through very credible sources that [Louis] Farrakhan is on the CIA
payroll. Other have been named as well, but I’m not prepared to identify them yet.
Farrakhan is to coordinate the Blacks and the Muslims to prepare for riots this summer,
        using any means necessary.”

    Austin mentions the 5 c’s. I would make a 6th c. Cash.
If the bugout isn’t the apocolypes and maybe a wildfire in your imediate area, wherever you evacuate to, will take cash for goods.

    • http://www.CategoryFive.org Austin Fletcher

You are absolutely correct Jim. At Category Five we actually advocate 10 C’s as a whole in your BOB, but this article is meant to focus on the items that should be duplicated throughout your bag for your personal survival. Cash is a wonderful item for everyone’s BOB, but if you’re in the middle of nowhere, extra cash won’t be as helpful as extra matches. Nonetheless… Extra cash weighs next to nothing, so feel free to add it to your system redundancy plans and you’ll be that much more prepared.

    • T. Jefferson

The only good to carry cash would be as a fire starter. If it all falls down, cash will be worth next to nothing except as a fire starter or toilet paper.

  • KG

I just love it when I hear people talk about our money as being “worth next to nothing.” I will gladly take any 20′s or 50′s you got! What? I thought you said they were worthless? Why wont you give me those “Worthless” pieces of paper????
