Prepare For 72-Hour Emergency

August 19, 2010 by

You never know what type of emergency is going to strike, but the most likely scenario involves a natural disaster like a flood, fire, earthquake, hurricane or tornado. If you solely rely on government responders to help you when these disasters strike, history has shown you may have a wait of up to three or four days.

That’s why it is essential you have a 72-hour emergency kit at your disposal—at the very least.

Such a kit could mean the difference between life and death, according to Larry Barkdull, author of Emergency Essentials’ Tips For Preparedness.

“Federal and local government and religious leaders recommend that you should prepare and personalize a kit for each member of your family by including clothing, personal documents, medications, and other essential emergency provisions, such as food, water, light, warmth and shelter,” Barkdull writes.

“Being prepared will allow you and your family to avoid fear and enjoy a sense of security. Preparedness also prevents much of the inconvenience and loss that might ordinarily accompany a crisis that takes you by surprise. You must not rely solely on outside agencies to rescue in a time of disaster. You must be ready to act in a positive way for you and your family.”

The key is take responsibility for yourself and your family. Don’t depend on government. In times of crisis government is often as dysfunctional as the rest of civilization around you.

Preparing ahead and taking charge of your survival situation are THE keys to survival.

Since cell phones and other communications may be out, it is good to have a pre-determined place for family members to meet in an emergency. If the home address is inaccessible a back up meeting place is a good idea.
