TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., (UPI) — The mother of a 12-pound, 3-ounce baby born in Michigan said the gargantuan infant was four-weeks premature when she was born via Caesarian section.
Crista Hebel, 26, of Traverse City, who gave birth Sunday to baby Ayara Hebel at Munson Medical Center, said she decided on a Caesarian section after learning of the child’s unusual size, but she ended up going into labor before she could schedule a procedure close to her May 5 due date, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported Wednesday.
Hebel said baby Ayara was doing “very well” Tuesday at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.
“Everyone in the NICU tells me it’s very hard to remember she’s a preemie because she’s so large,” she said.
Hebel said she previously gave birth to twin boys whose combined weight at birth was a pound less than their sister.
“This isn’t because of any kind of medical condition,” said proud father Bob Hebel, 38. “She’s just a very large child. She’s got the physical characteristics of her mother and she looks very Polynesian, like a princess. She’s dark and she’s plump and her knuckles are like dimples.”
