JACKSON, Miss., (UPI) —  A Mississippi man who compares his pothole-filling efforts to “Robin Hood” said he does not think taking asphalt from the city is a crime.

Ron Chane of Jackson said he and a group of colleagues took asphalt from the city and used it to repair 101 potholes in the city, which they signed with the phrase “citizen fixed,” ABC News reported Thursday.

“It’s sort of like Robin Hood. Once we saw that people were appreciating what we did, we went out again and made a goal of fixing 100 potholes. We’ve actually filled 101 potholes, so our mission has been completed,” Chane said.

Chane said he does not believe his group did anything wrong.

“We’re not trying to be thieves, or steal from the city,” Chane said. “We’re just trying to put the asphalt to use.”

The Jackson Police Department said investigators are looking into how Chane obtained the asphalt, which he said belonged to the city. Officers said no decision has yet been made about whether to press charges.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumbaba released a statement to WAPT-TV, Jackson, saying he does not approve of the group’s actions.

“We do not accept any use of the city’s resources without going through the proper legal channels,” the mayor said in the statement.
