Poor Weight Control Can Affect A Woman's Memory

July 22, 2010 by

Poor Weight Control Can Affect A Woman's MemoryResults of a recent study imply that obese women may be able to naturally improve their memory by eating healthy and losing excess weight.

A research team from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine recruited nearly 9,000 women to complete Modified Mini-Mental Status Examinations, which test a subject’s mental capacity, cognitive function and memory, Health Day News reports. Lead study author Diana Kerwin and her colleagues also measured each participant’s body mass index (BMI) and body fat distribution.

They not only discovered a link between obesity and poor memory, but also found that for every one-point increase in BMI, women scored one percentage point lower on the memory portion of the exam.

"The message is obesity and a higher BMI are not good for your cognition and your memory," said Kerwin. "While the women’s scores were still in the normal range, the added weight definitely had a detrimental effect."

She also noted that the link between obesity and impaired memory remained after accounting for various risk factors, including blood pressure, insulin resistance and age.

Furthermore, the study found that women who were heavier around the hips were more likely to have a poor memory than those who had excess weight around their waist.
