Poll: U.S. Isolationist Sentiment On The Rise

December 11, 2009 by

Poll: U.S. isolationist sentiment on the riseA recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center suggests that the U.S. has taken a sharp turn toward isolationism.

In the midst of a struggling economy, roughly 49 percent of participants said that the U.S. should "mind its own business internationally" and let other countries fend for themselves as best as they can.

The non-partisan research center has conducted a similar poll for the last 45 years and there has never been a plurality of voters who favored isolationism before.

However, the rate has steadily been rising. For example, in 2005, approximately 42 percent of respondents said that the U.S. should "mind its own business" in regards to international affairs, up from 30 percent in 2002.

Pew Research Center president Andrew Kohut said that the poor economy was most responsible for the America’s isolationist attitude and that the public was "displeased with the two wars [that the U.S. is] waging in Iraq and Afghanistan," quoted by the Associated Press.

Last week, President Obama announced that he will be dispatching 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. The first batch of Marines will likely be deployed by the end of the year.

Could be that we are getting a bit tired of letting our blood, time and money because the results are slow in coming but the world has changed and the foes we face can damage us with more ease than before. We have to be more vigilant, improve our security and maintain a effective fighting force, threats by our enemies are always going to be a part of our future and we will be a refuge and the symbol for decency and freedom to spite their wrath.

  • http://royaltoypoodle.com Maxine Albritton

you know this does not work. How about WW11 and I. We tried to keep outselves out but when the bullets fly overhead we have to retaliate and we did. Hitler was doing his thing exterminating the Jews and other Prisoners of war and we watched and some claim we did not know the truth but we did. When the war came closer to home we had to jump in. How many more Twin towers, Pentagons and White houses did we want to lose before we jumped into the last one with the middle East? Not to mention the lives that were lost. Remember people with short memory circuits that was only the icing on the cake. Before that we had the USS Cole receive a hole in its side and losing about 1500. men. Numerous Embassies were being blown away. I need not say more.

Truth mixed with error is dangerous … The Halocaust was revealed immediately upon WWII victory. My Dad, a WWII vet, had a historical photo book (very large) documenting the horrors. I was 6 years old and remember the celebration when the war ended.

Also, do not believe all the revisionist history being taught in public schools, colleges/universities today … but I would encourage you to continue your search for truth!

What is the saddest part of this isolationist thing is that far too many people deny that we are at war. There are those who honestly think we should pull ourselves into our shells like turtles, and the world will let us be. Not so! There are enemies of the state on every level in this country, and more on foreign shores. We will be invaded before too long, and we will all have to fight! The attack on the Second Amendment is part of this. If we are all disarmed, then the foreigners can waltz in and take over. Our so-called “leaders” are doing their best to destroy us, and the questionable “leadership” in the “White” House is leading the charge!

    • DaveH

      Winona,
You are right. We need to vigorously defend ourselves. But impoverishing our country with worldwide military excursions is not the answer to that defense. We need to arm ourselves to the teeth and let those individual countries that are not doing the right things protect themselves. If they don’t care enough to protect their own countries why should we?
Look at what has happened right here. First, the 9/11 thing might have been much less dramatic, if the passengers on those planes had not been disarmed to the point of no possible defense. Our government has made us into a bunch of helpless sheep when we fly. Even when right-minded people got a small step in the right direction with the law enabling pilots to be armed, the government still did everything it could to drag its feet in the implementation of that law.
And the Ft. Hood event is a dramatic example of the results of disarmament. The bloodshed would have been tremendously reduced if those soldiers had been allowed to carry freely. Nobody, in anything even slightly resembling a free society, can stop an evil-doer from acquiring a weapon. The only feasible solution is to allow people to arm themselves so that any such event can be quickly nipped in the bud by good people.

      • c.lee

        Well said my friend.

  • Joe Vaught

The greatest most powerful, most noble country on earth would never have been in the histroy books if we had folded when the British came to gather our weapons and gun powder. Farmers stood their ground, fought and died for this new country’s freedom. If the current muslim leadership in our great country has it’s way and they are trying very hard, we will not need to be worrying about being an isolationist, because we will not “be”, period.

  • C lee

The U.S. cant be the police of the world, we need to pay more attention to whats happening inside our own boarders. We have people at home that are struggleing every day. One of our biggest problems is we are not loyal to our own people we have to be out there saveing the world from itsself, but at what price? We cant save the world but we can save our own people and dont tell me the people of the world are our people because most of them dont want our help and those that do dont want to take any of the responsability for helping themselves they want a hand out not a hand up.Iam not a racisist person( sad to say I feel like I must clarify that each time I speak because there are those out there that would say I am to futher their own agenda )The black people are a loyal people the hispanics are a loyal people the whites which I am are not. Being in as we have been the majority if we cant be loyal to our people and I dont mean to the whites I mean to america we are lost. On the subject of illegal immegration I dont hate for instance the mexicans Instead Iam disgusted by our Govt. for allowing illegal immigration to happen.Iam Scotch-Irish on my fathers side my Grandparents came into Ellis Island. Iam German And American Indian on my mothers side My Grandfather came through Ellis Island my grandmother was full blood cherokee. I dont appose Immigration. I appose Illegal Immigration and the fact that our govt keeps selling us out so our polititions can appease a hispanic population for votes and the hell with the rest of us. Well I say the hell with the sellout polititions vote out all incombits and start over.

      Scott,
That is a pleasant surprise. I am under the impression that most of you want nothing to do with the United States. I would be happy to be wrong in that case.

I have met a lot of canadian born friends in my travels. I have never met one I dont like or wouldnt call friend so welcome Scott(a new friend)

  • Dick Wells (AKA Dad)

I have long held the opinion that we should let other countries settle their own dust. I see 4300 and counting lives lost fighting a ghost & cannot find it in our best interest. Not one Ameerican service man is worth losing for any other country.

We need solid leadership in our “war on terrorism.” However, it needs to be here because this is where the war will finally be fought. To have porous borders, PC laws and allow multi-lingual, multi-national enclaves to foment our down-fall is utterly silly. No, not silly, it is criminal

    • Joe H.

      Dick Wells,
I would have agreed with you before the onset of the nuclear age. You explode a nuclear bomb half way around the world from us and we will feel the effects! When the power plant went up in Russia, radiation levels raised slightly here!!! that never went into the atmosphere!!! We can’t always let others settle their own “dust” as it might settleon us!!!

      • DaveH

But Joe, the Russians were the ones who suffered the most from the Chernobyl accident. The best we can do is lead those horses to water, we can’t make them drink.

        • Joe H.

          DaveH,
And we can’t stand idly by hoping they do the right thing either!!! It could cost us more lives than all the wars in history!!!! Look at Hiroshima, they are still feeling the effects from that in birth defects and such. those bombs were play toys compared to what they have now. to live through the effects of radiation poisoning is WORSE than death. Now the Russians and the US have a neutron bomb that only kills the people and doesn’t destroy the buildings! the Russians figure they can use the buildings after the people are gone!!!

  • http://yahoo KM

Can some one tell me how we can afford to give money and aid to other countries, when we are broke?
I think we need to mind our own business, carry a big stick (nuke’em) if they bother us. I don’t want us to be bullies, just the toughest kid on the block that no messes with.
I think that is exactly how Regan felt.

    • C lee

I too think we need a better handle on our spending. We would be much better off helping the people within our own boarders and I for one dont think we are as broke as the govt would lead us to believe.

  • Kitty K

I agree wholeheartedly with KM. I’m sick of our leadership taking us in directions we ought not go. I’d like to be rid of all political correctness and get back to basics of protecting ourselves economically and when necessary, militarily. We can’t be to lilly-livered to fight when the situation calls for it. That’s right, nuke ‘em, if necessary! Reagan was absolutely right, and he wasn’t a bully!

  • Sovereign Person

Interesting article, though inappropriately titled. You’re talking about non-interventionism, not isolationism. Big difference. Non-interventionism is what our founding fathers intended, and is a very good thing.

    • J C

      Excellent Observation!!!

    • DaveH

      Good point Sovereign.

    • American Citizen

That’s good as long as we’re not attacked as we were at Pearl Harbor and 9/11.. Sometimes you’re forced to confront the bullies.

  • ROB

THE FOUNDERS OF OUR COUNTRY WERE SPECIFIC THAT WE SHOULD BEFRIEND AND ENCOURAGE TRADE WITH OTHER NATIONS, BUT NOT GET ENTANGLED IN THEIR AFFAIRS.HOWEVER COMMON SENSE ALSO DICTATES WE KEEP AN EYE ON ALL OTHER
NATIONS AND KEEP OURSELVES AS INTEREST #1. ED LEWIS IS CORRECT AS FAR AS WHO IS ACTUALLY RUNNING THE U.S. (INTERNATIONAL BANKERS AND GLOBAL
ELITE SUCH AS THE BILDERBERG GROUP). I RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE GOOGLE
ALEX JONES’S MOVIES “ENDGAME” AND “FALL OF THE REPUBLIC”. WE ARE BEING DUPED BY BOTH THE DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS WHO ARE NOTHING MORE THAN PUPPETS FOR THE GLOBAL ELITISTS. THE EDUCATION IS WORTH THE TIME.

  • Lonnie

I’m so tired of reading articles and taking surveys that completely miss the point they should be making. Letting other countries “fend for themselves” is not isolationism. It’s called “non-interventionist foreign policy” and certainly does not preclude free trade with all the countries of the world.

  • Dean Cobb

We can never again become isolationist. World War II might have ended much earlier had we not turned to isolationism after World War I. I do not like war any more than the next person, but we must always be on the alert to threats to our country and like it or not threats to other countries of the world can ultimately affect our security. How many jews might be alive today had we taken action earlier? No, we must saty vigilant. We have never had to fight on our on soil. Let us not take the risk of that happening in the future.

        Rich,

My hat is off to you.You serve and fought for this country. Stalin Lenin,Trotsky and Mao without a doubt are the worst mass murders in history. When The Soviet Union felled A lot of Communist Jews fled to Isreal. When Isreal was asked to hand over these butchers,Isreal refused. It was on Genocidal charges. The biggest bloodiest campaign was in the Ukraine.I want to point it not all Jews are bad or good.Judaism ,Christanity, and Islam are based on ancient wisdoms.Read Lloyd M.Graham:(Deceptions and Myths Of The Bible)It is highly accurate.A lot of Jewish Rabbis including Elmer Berger are now disputing the Palestine Area ever belong to the Jews, according to them, there is no historical evidence. Please respond.

    • AnhydrousBob

Dean, some have said, and I think there is validity to their ideas, that WWII was caused by the way WWI ended. And it ended like it did because we blew into town and gave the allies our support. Which caused an onerous burden on the Germans which gave Hitler more support than he should have had…
Non-Interventionism was a way of life for America for years upon years until the progressives got us into wars.
So many of the founders wished to not entangle with the wars of Europe, and I think maybe we’d be better off had we listened.

    • DaveH

So what did we accomplish in World War II? We routed the Germans for sure but then we allowed the Russians to further enslave those poor countries who were previously conquered by the Germans. Some help!

      • Joe H.

        DaveH,
Patton wanted to solve that problem and they wouldn’t let him!! Said he would take his tanks in make it look like they started it and kick their assets up over their shoulders. Patton could have done it too, no doubt!!!!

      • American Citizen

I was a child during the “big one” and can remember my mother saying at the end of the war that we needed to take care of the Russians. How prophetic.

  • Tammy

I believe that we need to first take care of the US before we send aid and other monies to other countries, I have just recently been able to pull my head above water (so to speak) and I had gone for over 2 months unable to buy groceries, if it were not for my garden I would have just starved to death, but I am sure there was some non-tax paying illegal worker with the job that I needed. I was raised to believe that you worked and paid for what you got and not to ask for a handout, America has got away from the simple way of, if you got the money in your pocket then you can get it, and if you don’t then you just do without it.

How many people do you know that is without a job or working a job for less money than they actually need to survive, and the gov, wants to make us pay a penalty if we can’t afford health insurance, what a joke, hell I can’t afford the penalty either, so am I going to go to jail for that?

Yes we need to take care of the USA first and as far as the war goes I feel that, that was begun for all the right reasons and if we were to get back to the basic reason for the war which was 9/11, then I understand why we are at war, not to make their gov. a democracy but to go after the taliban and all the crazy’s.

    • DaveH

      Tammy,
I feel your pain. We have gone far astray from what the founding fathers outlined for this country. We will continue the downhill slide unless people revisit those ideals of individual freedom, individual responsibility, and Limited Government. Please look into the Libertarian Party. We may be small now, but it is the only Party that has stuck to their principles in the last 40 years since their inception. I have no doubt that we could once again have a robust economy and happiness if we embraced the Libertarian ideals:

Our polititions can’t wait to sell us down the river to other countries. Or were you too busy as a REMF???

Maybe if we had not been involved in the manipulation of foreign governments and the setting up of brutal dictatorships friendly to “US interests”….we would not have earned the animosity of the citizens of those countries. We don’t get a good picture of what our government is doing “over there” we get “spin”. And while World Wars 1 and 2 were worthy causes, Afghanistan and Iraq are not wars, they are occupations. And you don’t win an “occupation”. We no longer have good government, we have corporations and bankers running our government that are getting rich killing young Americans. It’s disgusting.

  • DaveH

We are not “isolationists” because we don’t believe in being the World’s policemen. We are not “isolationists” because we believe that propping up failed regimes, either monetarily or militarily, is not in the best interest of those countries.

I’ll try to be brief, WWII is OVER [isn't it?]. We have NO reason to be in GERMANY, SOUTH KOREA OR JAPAN (and a LOT of other places). Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Germany, South Korea and Japan can bite the nearest
bullet (in the name of ‘hope and change’ of course). Unless or until our tax-and-spend retards change their ways, we owe it to ourselves to make REAL corrections in congress the white house. That translates to the new twits no longer out-spending Bush, and spending us into PERPETUAL POVERTY.
Connect the dots, America. Do the math. Wise up. Open your eyes, and light a fire under those who have proven to be raw incompetents – Washington. It’s truly THEM OR US!

    • J C

    RICH,

It seems to be the same pattern throughout European History (for the past Millenium) .

    1) A NORDIC RULER takes control of a PREDOMINANTLY ignorant ALPINE citizenry……

    2) The stupid ALPINES follow the NORDIC leader blindly ……….

    3) The NORDIC SOVEREIGN (I.e. KING, CZAR, FUEHRUR or IL DUCE) ostracizes the JEWS from
competing/patricipating freely in an Alpine society……….

    4) The Jews are only allowed very few occupation choices (such as BANKING).

    5) The NORDIC SOVEREIGN and his imbecile ALPINE citizenry borrow heavily from the JEWISH banker …

    6) THE NORDIC LEADERSHIP then decide TO DEFAULT ON THEIR DEBT ……….

    7) THE innocent JEWS ARE ROUNDED UP (like cattle) and either killed, tortured or banished (ie “THE WANDERING JEW” wondering why everyone is stealing from them) ….

THE JEW is the FALL GUY of WESTERN CIVILIZATION ……… THAT”S the REAL JEW ! RICH !
YOUR WEBSITE IS NOTHING MORE THAN NORDIC PROPAGANDA ! YOU JUST WANT TO INCITE THE NUMBSKULL , STUPID ALPINE CITIZENRY TO FOLLOW THE NORDICS ! In the case of the CZAR you can replace the ALPINE Citizenry with the SLAVS…

RICH, I’m of German descent, You know what I am talking about…. Coal Miner , I apologize for any hurtful remarks……….

  • http://ordy@fedtel./net Eric g

Jews yes a lot of stories , The Rothchilds are wealthy Jewish bankers ,Hitler surely should have put them to death . But he didnt . I have even read there was some jewish blood in Hitlers background .Jews practicing Judaism have always been discriminated against . Judaism is a religion of knowledge seekers , by being knowledge seekers they usually make the easiest money . They are groupe of people that like to stick to gether and help their fellow jews . Threw out history Jews were not good soldiers but better conivers and tricksters . Jerusalem and many of the Arab countries always had a lot of Jews . Yes Jews supported communism and there were lots of jews in Russia . But Hitler changed the Jews forever , after the Halocast Jews wanted their own country , Jews in Israel are a new breed of Jew . Now Jews are excelent soldiers maybe the best in the world . They are now even farmers . I dont care what some Rabbis say Jerusalem and the land around there has always been inhabited by Jews . Jeusalem was last the capital of ancient Israel before they were conqued by the Romans Since that time Jeusalem has never been a captal and Palestine has never been a country since the jews ruled it with their government before the Rommans . Israel in 1948 was the first independant government to controle any part of Palestine from the inside of Palestine for more than 2000 yrs . Yes there is Zionism , it is the belief that Israel should be a lot bigger ,big enough to take in all of the West bank , Jordan , Syria , Lebanon , part of Iraq and part of Suadi Arabia too . Most Jews in Israel are not Zionists . But I expect the muslims know about this biblical description of the land God gave to the Jews , and it may contribute to their hostility . The Arabs have tried to wipe out the Jews three times , and each time they lost more land . Now the Jews are not zoinists and they want to give back the land they conqured to the Arabs , if the Arabs will only recognise Israel right to exist . I dont expect the Arabs will do this , considering the Arabs have almost the whole world sticking up for them . Even the United States now says we are not a christian country ,but rather one of the largest muslim countries in the world . I predict the Jews in the next war will not give the land back and the size of Israel will be the exact biblical description of the land God promised to the Jews . Evreybody will scream and hollar but nobody will do anything about it . The muslim majority will be forced to live under jewish law . This will be great for the muslims but I suppose it will take a while before they will admit it .

      Eric g,

I am clasified as a gentile,on my mother side my great grandmother was Jewish,I never Have been a supporter of Isreal. There is no historical evidence it ever belong to the Jews.It is base on nothing but silly religious myths. There were very few Jews that were residing in the Palestine area,it was after World War two they started to piling in. The so called home land was proclaimed The State of Isreal.Through the help the help of Joesph Stalin and his communist they supplied the Zionist Jews the guns they needed. The Arabs were driven out to starve. This came by the way of Czechoslovakia.A lot of non-Zionist Rabbis will support my statement.Hitler was never a descendant of Jews, his ancestors came from Poland .According to historical records they always have been devout Roman Catholics.

It is high time we made the rest of the world participate in stopping the terrorist thugs from beating up on decent citizens. They are criminals plain and simple. No one has the right to kill others because they do not have the same religious viewpoint. Why America has been designated the police force of the world is beyond me. Our children and economic security have been sacrificed and those old men in Washington continue to let the rest of the world talk them into ruining our country. John Adams himself was reluctant to put American soldiers in the field of battle overseas. He said it would ruin our country. Eisenhower himself warned against allowing the military to take over this country. Those who do not learn from the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat it. We are in the final days of Rome here with the corrupt Senators destroying all that is good in the Republic. It is time to stand tough! Maybe giving women a chance at the reins in a REAL WAY would change our plight. Or… let’s send Congress to war and see how long they survive!

I wonder why we don’t consider bringing all our armed forces home and use them for National Security? Let all those Muslim folk set off their own roadside bombs. I also wonder why we continue sending Monotary aid to the same nations that stand ready to wipe the United States off the map. God, how dumb can this nation get???? And speaking of God, why does the great majority of U.S. citizens stand by with their hands in their pockets while that Yahoos in Washington rush on to steal our very way of life. I find myself being glad to b e 75 years old instead of 37.

I was a soldier in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam… I was there during the ’68 Tet Offensive. I realized then that the politicians in the U.S. were running this “war” and that we would never declare victory. Many politicians made a lot of money from the Vietnam experience. Many politicians are making money on our “War on
terrorism”.. Lets just bring our troops home and start protecting our own borders. The hell with the rest of the world who “hates” us. Let them fend for themselves, then we will see who comes to their aid… I am sick and tired of our politicians. Very few of them have bee in the military subject to combat conditions… If they like war so much, let them go and send their children too!!!

Too much isolationism can lead to problems, but interventions by the U.S. that have been occurring since the founding of the American Republic must be discontinued. America has only been isolationist for 6 years of its history (1934-1940). I mentioned this in my most recent opinion piece on interestingblogger: http://bit.ly/kIUQQq. I believe that a mix of internationalism and isolationism in U.S. policy creates a well-rounded foreign policy.
