WASHINGTON, (UPI) —  A majority of Americans support immigration reform that would include a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, a Politico poll indicated.

Sixty-two percent of Americans said they favor a proposal that would allow illegal or undocumented immigrants to earn citizenship over a several-year period, results of the Politico-George Washington poll released Monday indicated.

Thirty-five percent said they opposed such a proposal.

Forty-nine percent of Republicans said they support a path to citizenship while 45 percent said they opposed, results indicated. Among Democrats, 74 percent said they favored a path to citizenship and 24 percent said they opposed. Figures for independents were 61 in favor and 35 percent opposed.

Seventy-seven percent said they favor an immigration law that would allow children of illegal or undocumented immigrants to earn the right to stay here permanently if they complete a college degree or serve in the military. Nineteen percent oppose this element.

The White House has signaled it will aggressively push immigration reform during President Obama’s second term once the “fiscal cliff” situation is resolved. A plurality, 48 percent, disapproves of Obama’s handling of the immigration issue, with 45 percent approve.

Results are based on nationwide phone surveys of 1,000 registered likely voters conducted Dec. 2-6. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points.
