Mass murders like the December 2012 shooting in Connecticut may provide perverse political fodder for gun-control advocates like New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to push for more restrictive Federal gun-ownership laws; but in the eyes of the American public, it appears their gun-grabbing agenda is losing momentum.

Results of a CBS News poll released this week show 47 percent of those questioned now believe Congress should approve stricter laws on gun ownership — a number that’s gone down from 57 percent in a December survey conducted shortly after the Connecticut elementary school shooting.

By political party, 52 percent of those who identified themselves as Republicans said current gun laws should continue without changes, while 66 percent of Democrats believed gun control laws should be made stricter. Overall, 39 percent of those surveyed said current gun-ownership laws are sufficient and shouldn’t be changed.

Women surveyed were more likely to favor making guns harder to obtain, with 55 percent of women saying current laws aren’t strict enough — as opposed to 39 percent of men.

By region, Northerners still are buying into the gun-control talk in higher proportion to Americans throughout the rest of the country. Of those respondents who live in northern States, 58 percent support more regulation, while 44 percent of people in the South and Midwest agreed. In the western part of the United States, 47 percent of respondents favor tougher gun legislation.

Among those who’ve sought the national spotlight in the hope of eroding citizens’ 2nd Amendment powers, Bloomberg especially has demonstrated a readiness to seize upon the public outrage over mass shootings as an opportunity to sell American lawmakers on the idea that they need to strip all citizens of their Constitutionally protected freedoms pertaining to the owning of firearms.

With no supporting outside funding, Bloomberg created the Independence USA super PAC (political action committee) last October, vowing to use money he’s put into the fund to help support gun-grabbing legislative candidates nationwide, as well as to buy advertising that pushes his agenda in so-called “battleground” States. Bloomberg has contributed about $12 million to the PAC so far.

He has also funded anti-gun advertisements through his Mayors Against Illegal Guns organization. The televised ads are currently airing in 13 States viewed as “swing States” in next month’s Senate battle over a Democrat-sponsored bill aiming to expand background checks for gun buyers.

Ben Bullard

Reconciling the concept of individual sovereignty with conscientious participation in the modern American political process is a continuing preoccupation for staff writer Ben Bullard. A former community newspaper writer, Bullard has closely observed the manner in which well-meaning small-town politicians and policy makers often accept, unthinkingly, their increasingly marginal role in shaping the quality of their own lives, as well as those of the people whom they serve. He argues that American public policy is plagued by inscrutable and corrupt motives on a national scale, a fundamental problem which individuals, families and communities must strive to solve. This, he argues, can be achieved only as Americans rediscover the principal role each citizen plays in enriching the welfare of our Republic.

Hey, I thought this was all settled yesterday when we decided the “majority” is always “right” except when they’re “wrong”. These “polls” are getting everyone sooooo confused.

58% of northerners want more gun control? Wow. It’s just more proof that things would be better if the South had won the war.

Just because this legislation is losing momentum now, doesn’t mean they’re done yet. They will be back. Don’t break out the Dom just yet.
Keep a close eye on these folks.

We all cried at the slaughter of innocent victims at Sandy Hook Elementary…And now the anti-gunners are using this school shooting as an excuse to ban AR15′s (Bushmaster’s) claiming these guns are “weapons of war”…Quote from Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado…When statistics show that few crimes are committed with these weapons…
Like .03 % of One Percent…Golly Gee…More people are killed with knives, fists, clubs and hammers than with these weapons…Yet Dianne Feinstein and Charles Schumer are livid over these guns as was used during the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting…These victims (children) now become props for their anti-gun agenda…The hypocracy of the Democrats has no end…More children were killed at the Branch Davidian Compound by government forces than were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary….Namely the ATF and the FBI who fire bombed the underground bunker in which all the children were hiding from the mayhem that was taking place above ground…All the children were burned alive…beyond identification…to a crisp…Yes the ATF and FBI even admitted that they had lied to the American public over the fiasco that took place that horrific day of which 80 American citizens were killed…No investigation took place and the cover up was allowed to become record…Yet not one of the following person’s shed a tear for the children that were massacred that day nor were any condolences offered…Bill Clinton nor his wife Hillary shed one tear that day for these chlldren that were slaughtered by government forces…Nor did Janet Reno shed a tear…It is she who ordered the massacre and slaughter of these chlldren and their families… Nor did Dianne Feinstein shed a tear, nor did Charles “Chucky Cheese” Schumer shed a tear …Today they are the ttear filled advocate’s of the Sandy Hook shooting…Not one Democrat shed a tear for the Branch Davidian children who were slaughtered by the forces of government storm troopers run amok…Killing our own citizens along with their children…Yes that is correct…More children were killed at Mount Carmichael than were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary…Sadly…
The Democrats have no shame and remorse when the government itself becomes the killing machine of its own people!…”When will They ever Learn?”…Peter, Paul and Mary.

The majority is not always right, which is why we don’t live in a democracy, often called mob rule, the few times democracy was tried it always ended in tyranny. We live in a Constitutionally limited republic, protecting our natural rights, one of which is the right to keep and bear arms,.

Up here in Canada relatively few of us have guns and as a result we do not have the mass killings and shootings in the streets. malls, schools, theatres, etc. that you Americans seem to enjoy every couple of days. We remain an enlightened democracy with all of the freedoms you folks have minus all the gun violence. Just saying.
