Plant Extract Shown To Be More Effective Than Antihistamines In Alleviating Allergy Symptoms

May 4, 2011 by

Plant extract shown to be more effective than antihistamines in alleviating allergy symptomsIndividuals with allergies who struggle to find relief may soon be in luck, since German researchers have recently discovered that an extract derived from the butterbur plant may help alleviate allergy symptoms like hay fever more effectively than antihistamines.

Hay fever occurs when a person breathes in an allergen and subsequently experiences swelling, itching and excess mucus production, according to the National Institutes of Health.

While antihistamines have been the go-to treatment for many doctors, this new finding may provide hope for a natural alternative therapy, since the extract Ze 339, also known as petasol butenoate complex, was shown to be both fast and effective.

Additionally, antihistamines only treat acute symptoms, but Ze 339 could reach even further.

"Our data indicate that the extract also has a preventive effect, which must be investigated further," said co-author Carsten Schmidt-Weber, head of the Center of Allergy and Environment in Munich.

The extract has already been approved as a treatment in Switzerland, but the authors noted that further research must be done before it can be considered a safe drug in the U.S.

OMG – further research for safety in the US. It’s a plant extract and it hasn’t killed anyone like a lot of big PHARMA’s drugs have so why is it not safe here?

I do think however that supplement companies should be regulated by the fda so we can be sure we are getting good stuff. we could be getting anything now.

They don’t have enough money to pay off the FDA. Vioox should never have been allowed on the market, so FDA allowed it, KNOWING that it caused heart attacks, so they used a black box warning. Before it was taken off the market, between 89,000-139,000 Americans died because of it, and between 150,000-200,000 world wide. Google Avandia, Bextra, Celebrex, the list goes on and on. The FDA tried to fire Dr. David Graham because he blew the whistle. The only reason he kept his job is because he requested and received Whistleblower Protection. I’ll trust the EWG for my info. They conduct independent testing of supplements, and are not beholden to the supplement industry. Remember, the drug companies are the ones who pay FDA salaries.
